DNA Links Executed Convict to 1984 Triple Murder
Posted: January 10, 2014 at 3:43 pm
An Iowa man who was executed in Missouri for the 1987 murder of a 12-year-old girl has now been linked to an unsolved triple homicide three years earlier, investigators announced Friday.
New DNA evidence implicates Andrew Six in the 1984 bludgeoning deaths of 20-year-old Justin Hook Jr.; Hook's fiancee, 19-year-old Tina Lade; and Hook's mother, 41-year-old Sara Link, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Analysts did testing on evidence recovered from the inside of Lade's jeans to develop a profile, which matched Six's DNA.
Missouri authorities executed Six by lethal injection in 1997 for the kidnapping and murder of 12-year-old Kathy Allen. Six and his uncle kidnapped the girl from her family's trailer in Ottumwa, a city in southeast Iowa, then slit her throat and dumped her body in northern Missouri.
Retired DCI supervisor Sam Swaim said that Six had long been a suspect in the 1984 triple homicide, but that investigators could not come up with enough evidence. He said that he was happy that scientific evidence has finally linked Six to the crime, but wishes Six had been caught earlier.
"I regret that we didn't get that case solved. That would have saved Kathy Allen's life," he said in a phone interview.
Hook's body was found outside his burned-out trailer in rural Drakesville, a sleepy town of 200 people near the Missouri border, in April 1984. When authorities tried to notify Hook's mother at her home in Farmington, they learned that she was missing.
Days later, a farmer found her body on a hilly, wooded section of his home near Eldon, about 15 miles northeast of Drakesville. Two days later, police dogs found the body of Lade in a ravine a half-mile from where Link's body was recovered. Investigators said all three had been killed by blows to the head, and that the deaths were related and probably happened around the same time.
The discovery of the bodies day after day shook a rural area that typically sees little violent crime. Friends said Hook had given Lade, of Ottumwa, an engagement ring days before their deaths on the birthday they shared, when she turned 19 and he turned 20.
"I'm glad they did the work that they've done," said Cynthia Moyes of Coralville, the sister of Hook and daughter of Link. "It provided some closure."

DNA helps put serial burglar behind bars
Posted: at 1:44 am
CHARLOTTE- A serial burglar is back behind bars thanks to his DNA. Charlotte Mecklenburg Police just arrested a man, months after they say he broke into a business in West Charlotte. DNA links him to the crime.
Jimmy Clinton Johnson is just one of the latest suspects identified through DNA. CMPD said he allegedly broke into a trophy shop in West Charlotte back in August. Crime scene investigators collected and analyzed blood from the inside of the front door. CMPD cant comment specifically about this case, because it is pending but did speak about how DNA is used to solve a case.
"DNA is considered the gold standard as far as forensic science goes, said the Director of the CMPD Crime Lab, Matt Mathis. It's a great tool, very reliable, and based on very solid science."
Mathis says CMPDs crime lab is the second largest in the state and they test about 800 cases per year for DNA. Johnson's was in the system from an earlier conviction, and came back a match.
"Sometimes the only thing missing is the who, said Mecklenburg County Prosecutor, Spencer Merriweather. DNA can be that tool that helps us fill in the who. It can help answer that question for us."
Merriweather said DNA can be crucial to getting a conviction in many cases. And the more samples that are collected and compared, the more cases that could get closure, no matter how old they are.
"A person can't outlive the evidence, added Merriweather. The evidence is going to be there, it may not be tomorrow, two weeks from now, two years from now."
Merriweather said DNA can also be used to prove someone's innocence.
North Carolina now collects DNA when certain violent offenders are arrested. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office says it collected more than 1,400 samples last year. They were sent to the SBI to be analyzed and placed in the database.

Story by J. Israel Balderas / CBS 12 News West Palm Beach, Fla. -- Continuing coverage now on a CBS 12 news investigation.
We go back to the scene of the crime, where evidence was collected. But surprisingly, so was the victim's DNA.
The unanswered question for weeks: why?
It starts with two different women.
It's terrifying, I'm terrified, said Riviera Beach resident Gladys Cameron. I cant even sleep at night.
We were shocked, said Brenda Bonar, who lives in North Palm Beach. I mean, I will tell you, it took us a long time to figure out if we want to do this or not.
Both of them had similar experiences with two different police departments.
Gladys, with Riviera Beach police, who was perplexed when she needed help.
What? DNA? Really? Swap my mouth, my son's mouth, recalls Cameron. He was like, yeah!
And Brenda, who didnt know what to say to a North Palm Beach Police Department officer.

Grim Sleeper: Judge allows DNA evidence gathered at restaurant
Posted: January 8, 2014 at 1:44 am
A judge on Tuesday ruled that DNA evidence that led to alleged Grim Sleeper serial killer Lonnie Franklin Jr. was lawfully obtained via plates and utensilsseized by a police officer who posed as a restaurant busboy.
Appearing on the stand for the first time, Franklin testified that he was attending a birthday party that day in July 2010at John's Incredible Pizza in Buena Parkwith one of his employees and her three daughters when the DNA evidence was gathered.
Days later on July 7, he was arrested by Los Angeles police.

Franklin's attorneys, Seymour Amster and Louisa Pensanti, had argued that the busboy cleared their client's plates before he had finished first a pizza and then a chocolate cake and therefore were taken illegally. The attorneys also argued that Franklin had a reasonable expectation that his plates would be thrown into a pile with others, and so his DNA would never be able available for testing.
"I felt it would be mixed with the rest of the trash," Franklin said on the stand, drawing sighs of frustration from victims' families in the courtroom.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy rejected the defense's argument, calling it "specious and ridiculous." She said she couldn't believe a reasonable person, not knowing he was under surveillance, would ever think about what happens to his leftovers and used plateware.

"If he were really concerned about such things, he would not eat or he would take his trash with him," Kennedy said.
Frustrated by their inability to find the Grim Sleeper, whose DNA was not in a law enforcement database, Los Angeles police asked the state to look for a DNA profile similar enough to be a possible relative of the killer.

DNA confirms remains of another alleged Nui victim
Posted: at 1:44 am
The 4-year-old went missing during a festival on February 5, 2013. Nui's arrest last month for allegedly raping and killing a 6-year-old girl in Bangkok's Soi La Salle on December 6 led to a confession that he had committed many other crimes, including two in Loei.
The missing girl's family yesterday afternoon held a funeral for the girl at a temple in Muang Loei, after they had collected the bones from the Police General Hospital. The test confirmed the bones' DNA matched the girl's mother.
At the funeral several people donated money to help the girl's family, who were so poor they had to borrow the coffin from a shop. Flowers to decorate the funeral were not bought but gathered by relatives.
Four monks performed a rite at the crime scene to help the girl's spirit return home and the cremation rite is set for this Friday.
Relatives said they were told police could not bring Nui to re-enact the crime in Loei for fear he would be assaulted or killed by an angry crowd and police had to search for his other victims.

Police: DNA led to arrest in attack of 15-year-old girl
Posted: at 8:48 pm
A Northwest Side man with a long history of arrests has been charged with the brutal rape of a teenage girl who remains in critical condition nearly a month after the attack, authorities said.
Detectives were led to Luis Alberto Pantoja, 25, through DNA collected from a condom wrapper found near the Belmont Cragin backyard where the girl was assaulted just before dawn Dec. 17, according to a law enforcement source.
Pantoja was arrested at his home on Friday without incident, police said in a statement, saying additional physical evidence was recovered then.
Pantoja, of the 5500 block of West Wrightwood Avenue, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated battery and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. He was ordered held without bail during a hearing today.
Authorities asked for a sign language interpreter during the hearing. Pantoja is hearing-impaired, according to a police report.
Pantoja was found with a .32-caliber revolver but it was unclear if he had it during the attack, authorities said.
The attack happened in 2400 block of North Long Avenue about 5:25 a.m., police said. The girl was found by a neighbor about two hours later, half-clothed and bleeding from the head.
At a Sunday afternoon news conference, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy congratulated Area North detectives and officers from the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force on the arrest.
He said the investigation found the girl was attacked an hour earlier than detectives originally thought. The was on her way to catch a bus so she could meet her father, who was to give her a ride to school, McCarthy said.
He said the girl would usually leave a little later in the morning, which is why police thought the attack occurred not long after 6 a.m.
