JACKSON, TN (localmemphis.com) - Travarious Dejuan White, 26, of Jackson was convicted of two counts of aggravated robbery, carjacking, and felony evading by motor vehicle in Circuit Court Division III last Wednesday, March 26, 2014.

The conviction stems from a robbery and carjacking on the parking lot of North Side High School about 10:45 p.m. on August 26, 2007. A young man and woman were standing next to a vehicle on the parking lot talking when a man approached them, and asked if they knew if the city bus was still running. He then pulled out a handgun demanding the couples wallet, purse, phones and car keys. The suspect left in their vehicle but was spotted a short time later by a Madison County Sheriffs Department Deputy who pursued the vehicle until it crashed and rolled several times at Royal and Allen streets. The driver ran from the totaled vehicle and got away at the time. He left behind a distinct hat worn by the robber, his gun and his blood from being injured in the wreck. That blood was sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Laboratory where a DNA profile was identified. There was no suspect to compare at the time and it did not match known samples in the DNA databases.

Subsequent to that Travarious White was arrested on a felony that required a DNA sample be taken and submitted to the TBI for entry in the DNA databases. In February, 2012, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reported that Whites DNA matched the DNA from the suspects blood from the 2007 robbery/carjacking. Investigators went to the Madison County Jail where White was serving time for violating probation from a felony theft conviction and obtained a control DNA sample from White. That sample was submitted to the TBI lab. The TBI lab confirmed the match.

Currently, White is serving an unrelated 10 year sentence in the Tennessee Department of Corrections for narcotics distribution. Judge Pride has scheduled sentencing on this conviction for April 24.

A convicted sexual predator has been tied to a sickening attack where he allegedly raped a Queens woman in front of her husband nearly 18 years ago prosecutors announced Monday.

A DNA match has allegedly linked Richard Thomas, 47, to the July 1996 attack against a Far Rockaway woman who woke up to see a masked man armed with a gun standing in her bedroom.

He told her husband not to look at him or he would "blow his head off" then raped the wife on the floor, prosecutors charged.

Thomas is serving his fourth year of a 50-year sentence for unrelated sex assaults on a 12-year-old girl in 2004 and on a woman in 1996 cases that were also solved through the DNA database.

He was connected to the latest allegation by a district attorney's initiative that combs through unsolved sex assaults in Queens. It analyzed a previously untested rug and t-shirt Thomas is accused of using to clean himself, leading to an identification.

The cold case taskforce, which started working nearly two years ago, has led to indictments against 13 unnamed individuals, referred to as John Does until they're apprehended, plus three named defendants, said Queens DA Richard Brown.

DNA Evidence Solves Nearly 7-Year-Old Crime

FAR ROCKAWAY, QUEENS (PIX11) DNA found on a rug from the crime scene collared an alleged rapist suspected of attacking a sleeping woman in her bed 17 years ago, the Queens District Attorneys Office said Monday.

Richard Thomas has been arrested in connection with the July 28, 1996, cold case, the DA said.

The 47-year-old suspect, whose last known address was in the Far Rockaway section of Queens, was ordered held without bail on March 28 and is scheduled to return to court in June, the DA said.

He has been charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy. If convicted, Thomas faces 25 years in prison.

Authorities said the victim was sleeping with her husband inside their Far Rockaway home the night of the attack. She was awakened by a noise and when she opened her eyes, saw a masked man allegedly Thomas standing over her, armed with a handgun.

The attacker threatened the victim, telling her not to look at him or make a sound, the DA said. Thats when the victims husband woke up, authorities said. Thomas allegedly told him not to look at him or he would blow his head off.

Thomas allegedly forced the victim out of the bed and onto the floor, where he raped her, the DA said. Before fleeing, Thomas allegedly wiped his genitals on the floor rug and a t-shirt evidence that was not previously tested.

DNA on the rug helped lead investigators to the suspect.

The discovery was made as part of the Queens District Attorneys cold case initiative, which began two years ago and is supported by federal grant money. The initiative aims to find untested evidence in cold cases dating back to 1996, which is as far back as the statute of limitations allows.
