DNA Test Can Trace Your Ancestral Origins Back 1,000 Years

Posted: May 3, 2014 at 6:44 am

Most of us can broadly trace our ancestral roots to a country or general region on the planet. But a new DNA test can locate where your relatives lived over 1,000 years ago, and in some cases, even pinpoint the specific village or island your ancestors came from.

The new DNA test was over 80 percent successful in tracing people from around the world back to their ancestral origins. Such knowledge could help improve personalized medicine, forensic science and research pertaining to ancestral origins of different human populations.

Eran Elhaik of the University of Sheffield andTatiana Tatarinova from the University of Southern California invented the Geographic Population Structure (GPS) test, which works by scanning a persons DNA for parts that were formed as a result of two ancestors from disparate populations having children: for example, a Viking and Briton falling in love after Vikings invaded Britain in the 11th century.

Once a mixed DNA signature is detected, it is compared with reference data from people around the world that havent moved for hundreds of years. Finally, a computer program calculates how close to these populations a persons ancestors lived and pinpoints a location.

Elhaik applied the GPS test to roughly 600 individuals from around the worldincluding regions as far-flung as Kuwait, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Peru. The GPS correctly assigned 83 percent of the individuals to their ancestral country, and 50 percent of them within 62 miles of their point of origin. Elhaik and his team published findings regarding the tests efficacy this week in Nature Communications.

If you are interested in tracing your DNA back to its origin, youll need to provide a saliva sample, pay about $100 to have your DNA read, and pay an additional $35 to have your ancestral home identified. You can begin your quest by visiting Prosapia Genetics online.

DNA test results pin down Baguio massacre suspect

Posted: at 4:44 am

BAGUIO CITY Police said they have enough evidence to pin down the primary suspect in the April 6 slaughter of five people, including three children, here, following the release of the results of DNA testing on blood samples taken from the crime scene. Dr. Jaime Rodrigo Leal, medico legal officer of the Crime Laboratory in the Cordillera, confirmed that the blood samples lifted from the place of the killings an apartment on 3rd Kayang Street, here matched with the swab specimen obtained from suspect Philip Tolentino Avino.

According to Leal, the confirmation was based on the DNA test results released to Senior Inspector Angie Amangan, DNA analyst of the Cordillera Crime Laboratory and team leader in the investigation of the massacre.

Leal said the DNA profile matched with the blood lifted from the plastic cabinet, bag, toilet, and the suspects short pants that was left behind in the crime scene.

The blood obtained from the belt of the suspect also matched with the DNA profile of victim Jacqueline Nociete who sustained 18 stab wounds in the body.

The blood from the crime scene and the buccal (mouth) swabbing of the suspect were the specimen subjected to DNA, Leal added.

The presence of the suspect DNA profi le in the crime scene is very vital in the prosecution of the suspect. The DNA test brings the suspect to the scene of the crime, Leal explained.

It can be recalled that Avino, alias Michael Geronimo, was subjected to physical checkup after he was turned over to the Baguio City Police Office by Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno on April 9.

During the checkup, Leal found out that the suspect had physical injuries.

He has wounds on the hands four on the right hand and three on the left. These injuries are significant because there are also blood spots that were seen on the scene of the crime, Leal said.

Avino was also identified by two witnesses who saw him knocking on the door of the apartment where the five victims, three of them children, were killed, around 3:30 p.m. on April 6, 2014.

DNA project ending for Colorado inmates

Posted: at 4:44 am

(Eds: Incorporates story slugged DNA Test Denied.)

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) Colorado's Justice Review Project, which reviewed hundreds of old cases statewide over recent years to ensure justice was done, is coming to an end after just one recommendation for new DNA testing.

The program run by the Colorado Attorney General's Office contributed to Robert Dewey's exoneration and freedom following his conviction in Mesa County.

The program is being suspended after $2.6 million in funding from the National Institute of Justice ran out.

Colorado Attorney General spokeswoman Carolyn Tyler said there are no more recommendations for DNA testing.

To qualify, inmates had to be convicted at trial or by guilty plea in a violent felony, including murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, or aggravated robbery. The identity of the perpetrator had to be an issue in the case and physical evidence lending itself to DNA testing had to be available.

"Most of the applications did not qualify for DNA testing as they were not identity cases in which DNA testing would reveal the identity of the true culprit," Tyler said.

First Assistant Attorney General Julie Selsberg said last year that more than 2,000 Colorado inmates had expressed interest. At that time, 7,914 people were serving sentences in the Colorado Department of Corrections for violent crimes that were eligible for the review. A final report on the project is due out later this year, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported Thursday (http://tinyurl.com/kk3mbmw ).

It was Selsberg and her team who recommended DNA tests after a review of Dewey's 1996 trial conviction in the murder of Jacie Taylor of Palisade. The results backed Dewey and indicated someone else committed the crime. Dewey was exonerated in 2012.

Dewey was awarded $1.2 million as the first Colorado resident compensated for wrongful imprisonment 17 years and 12 days in Dewey's case under a law inspired by Dewey and signed into law by Gov. John Hickenlooper.
