Police: DNA links man to sex assault of 89-year-old

Phoenix police investigators arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the 2013 sexual assault of an 89-year-old woman after DNA evidence linked the man to the crime scene, according to a Phoenix police spokesman.

Angel Flores was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of sexual assault, kidnapping and burglary, according to jail records.

Phoenix investigators initially said they had little evidence to go on after the elderly woman was sexually assaulted at about 5:30 a.m. on April 13, 2013, in her home near 59th Avenue and Thomas Road.

After hearing a knock early in the morning, the woman opened her door to a forceful man immediately sexual assaulting her, authorities said.

Flores reportedly convinced the woman to open the door by saying he was a neighbor, officials said.

Flores denied involvement in the crime, knowing the woman or ever being in her home, but investigators said the DNA evidence confirmed he was there.

The woman called the police after Flores left her house, according to a police report. She was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and received a forensic examination so DNA evidence could be collected.

Flores had previously had a DNA sample taken and was identified through a match to the DNA evidence collected from the scene.

Sit Less, Protect Your DNA and Live Longer?

Posted: at 2:43 am

By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter Latest Prevention & Wellness News

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 3, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Spending less time sitting might increase your lifespan by keeping your DNA young, Swedish researchers say.

More time spent on your feet appears to lengthen bits of DNA called telomeres. Telomeres, which protect the end of chromosomes (like the tips that keep shoelaces from fraying), tend to get shorter and shorter until they can't shorten any more, causing cells to die.

"Our data indicate that lengthening of our telomeres may be one mechanism that induces health benefits after lowering sitting time in elderly people," said lead researcher Per Sjogren, an associate professor in the department of public health and caring sciences at Uppsala University.

"One should, of course, be careful with the conclusions, since our study is rather small and needs to be confirmed in larger trials," Sjogren said.

However, this is the first study describing a possible relationship between physical activity and lengthening of telomeres, according to Sjogren.

"Telomeres have attracted a lot of interest in the last few years because they are situated at the end of our chromosomes and have shown to be important for DNA replication and cell survival. The interest of whether telomeres may affect health and longevity has increased," Sjogren said.

Telomeres stop chromosomes from fraying or clumping together and scrambling the genetic codes they contain, the researchers noted.

Why spending less time sitting might lengthen telomeres isn't known. "That is a valid question that remains to be resolved," Sjogren said.

Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center, said, "There has long been evidence that the more hours we spend sitting every day, the fewer days we are likely to have to spend sitting, or doing anything else for that matter. Hours per day on our backsides correlate with reductions in life expectancy."

Cold case thaws as Baltimore man is indicted in 1981 murder

Posted: at 2:43 am

DNA recovered from a blanket taken from a crime scene decades ago has helped prosecutors bring charges against a Baltimore man they say raped and killed a 75-year-old woman in 1981.

Phillip D. Lee, 55, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sex offense in the death of Anna Dorthea Smith. He has been held since mid-August without bail. Police and prosecutors announced his indictment Friday.

The indictment "highlights the power of DNA analysis, which led us to this defendant," Baltimore State's Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein said.

The case had no suspects until advances in DNA testing helped point investigators to Lee. Investigators have been unable to find any of Smith's relatives to inform them of Lee's arrest.

"In essence, the detectives on this case were the victim's last voice," police spokesman Detective Jeremy Silbert said.

Baltimore's Cold Case Unit, made of one lieutenant and five detectives, juggles several old investigations at the same time. Its members can decide to look at any unsolved homicide or other major crime.

Over the years, technology and legislation have enabled the state to expand its collection of DNA from criminals and suspects, increasing the likelihood that detectives can link long-stored evidence to suspects and solve years-old cases.

In July, Baltimore County police and prosecutors identified suspects in the unrelated killings of women in the 1990s. DNA tests allowed the Baltimore County state's attorney's office to close both cases, but there were no charges: The two men had since died.

Authorities in Baltimore said connecting Lee to Smith's killing took several years of work.

Smith was found strangled in her home in the 2500 block of W. Fairmount Ave. on the morning of Dec. 7, 1981.
