WEST READING, Pa. -

DNA evidence has helped police identify a suspect nearly a decade after a violent home invasion.

Edwardo Santiago, also known as Eduardo, is now facing charges that include robbery, simple assault, theft, conspiracy, receiving stolen property and related charges.

"Someone was standing there and they maced me and all I could see was a big figure," said Frederick Korper, who spoke only to 69 News following the break in the case.

Korper, 78, survived the violent home invasion nearly nine years ago.

"I kept thinking about it every time I heard the word DNA," said Korper, who now lives in Reading.

Santiago, 44, of Reading, is locked up in the Berks County Jail.

According to police, Korper received a knock on his door in the 500 block of Franklin Street in West Reading in November 2005. Korper said when he asked who it was he was told, "It's the police." A woman burst inside and sprayed mace in Korper's eyes. He fought her off and managed to pull her to the ground and pulled out some of her hair.

"She kept macing me, and she said, 'Let go of my hair or I'm going to keep macing you,' and it got so bad I had to let go, but I had a clump of hair," said Korper.

As the struggle ensued, Korper told police he remembered hearing footsteps and then a man said, "Got the money," said police.

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should have undergone a DNA test to prove that the unknown profile of 'Male Y' found on Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan's rectum was not his, the Federal Court heard today.

Lead prosecutor Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said the defence never explained why Anwar's semen samples were found on Mohd Saiful's rectum.

"He should be ready to do his own DNA test if the semen is not his. He can do it quietly in Australia or Europe," he submitted before a five-man bench chaired by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria, which is hearing Anwar's final appeal against a sodomy conviction and five-year jail sentence.

He said Anwar could have tendered the results of his DNA test at the High Court stage as an additional defence evidence.

The Court of Appeal had found Anwar, 67, guilty of having sodomised his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari, 27, at Unit 11-5-1 of the Desa Damansara Condominium in Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara, between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.

Anwar was charged under Section 377B of the Penal Code, which carries a jail sentence of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

The appeal hearing, which was initially set for two days from Oct 28, has been extended as both sides submitted lengthy submissions.

The defence is seeking to free the opposition leader from a sodomy conviction while the prosecution wants the court to dismiss Anwar's appeal to overturn his conviction and jail term.

The other four judges on the Federal Court panel are Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Md Raus Sharif and Federal Court judges Tan Sri Abdull Hamid Embong, Tan Sri Suriyadi Halim Omar and Datuk Ramly Ali. Submitting on Anwar's claim that his sodomy charge was a conspiracy, Muhammad Shafee argued that it was a mere allegation as it was illogical and unbelievable.

On the high rectal swab taken from Mohd Saiful Bukhari's intimate parts which showed the presence of Anwar's DNA, Muhammad Shafee said, "What is the appellant's DNA doing there at 4cm (in the complainant's rectum), and it should be answered by the appellant."

NEW ORLEANS (November 4, 2014)Starting with a simple DNA swab taken from fang marks on people bitten by snakes, an international research team correctly identified the species of the biting snake 100 percent of the time in a first-of-its-kind clinical study, according to data presented today at the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene's (ASTMH) Annual Meeting.

The study, conducted at three medical facilities in Nepal, found that if snake DNA could be isolated from the bite wound, the test identified the species of snake responsible every time.

"These findings represent a significant step toward improving care for patients in areas of the world where snakebites constitute a massive but neglected health risk," said Franois Chappuis, MD, PhD, chief of the division of tropical and humanitarian medicine at Geneva University Hospitals, Switzerland, who directed the study and presented the results. "This DNA test may hasten more effective bedside diagnostics for snakebite victims, giving them a better chance of surviving and making a full recovery."

Bites from venomous snakes are common in many parts of the world and an especially serious unresolved health problem to millions of people living in South and Southeast Asia, as well as Africa and Latin America. Although there are no reliable numbers at the global scale, a study published in 2008 estimated at least 421,000 cases of envenomation and up to 94,000 deaths occur worldwide from snakebite each year. However, experts warn that these figures may underestimate the real problem, which is believed to affect several million people bitten by venomous snakes annually and hundreds of thousands who die or survive disabled, suffering from amputation or deformed limbs as a result of unavailable or delayed treatment.

In some villages of the study area of southeast Nepal reported today, a community-based survey in 2002 revealed an estimated 1,162 snakebites and 162 snakebite deaths per 100,000 people per year, one of the highest rates ever reported. Likewise, a recent survey of more than one million deaths in India, published in the journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases in 2011, found that 46,000 people die every year in India from snakebites. This figure is about 20 times the official death toll recorded in Indian hospitals, most likely because less than one in four fatal snakebite cases had received any hospital treatment, the study revealed.
