Chemistry Department's Crime DNA Unit head, Dr Seah Lay Hong, told the High Court that DNA testing on four cigarette butts collected from the Kuan Yin Temple parking lot matched Koong's DNA profile.

During examination-in-chief by deputy public prosecutor T. Deepa Nair yesterday, Dr Seah said saliva samples from the smoker's mouth found on the cigarette was extracted for DNA testing.

Koong, 45, is on trial for murdering Hussain, 75, as well as for attempted murder of his wife, Cheong Mei Kuen, 50, a managing consultant, at the Kuan Yin Temple parking lot at No. 4, Lorong Ceylon, Dang Wangi, here, between 1.30pm and 2pm, on July 29, last year.

The 13th prosecution witness said Koong's DNA male profile was found from among four cigarette butt samples sent by the police to the Chemistry Department on Aug 1 last year.

Acting Deputy Superintendent Zuraimi Zam Zam, attached with the Forensic Laboratory Division (D10) of the Kuala Lumpur Police headquarters, testified that he and seven officers found the cigarette butts at food stalls within the temple compound.

Zuraimi said after they arrived at the temple parking lot about 3.15pm on July 29 last year, they gathered the cigarette butts from stalls about 10m from Hussain's body and 6m from the main temple building.

He said after being wrapped and sealed, the cigarette butts were handed over to Investigating Officer Assistant Superintendent R. Ananthan that same day.

He said they also collected three bullets from under Hussain's body and seven bullet casings scattered near the body. The evidence was given to Ananthan the same day.

He said the deceased's body was initially covered by black plastic before he pulled it off, revealing the corpse sprawled on the ground, drenched in blood.

Borders-based Valerie Graves had significant head and facial injuries when she was discovered in the ground-floor bedroom of a waterside house in Bosham, on the English south coast.

She was killed while she house-sat for friends in the coastal village that was featured in an episode of the ITV crime drama Midsomer Murders.

Ms Graves, 55, had moved from Jedburgh, in the Scottish Borders, to the West Sussex village just two months previously to care for her 87-year-old mother.

Now police have returned to the area of the killing in their latest attempt to find any evidence that might lead them to what happened.

She was house-sitting with her sister Jan, mother Eileen and her sister's partner, Nigel Acres in a home in Smugglers Lane while the owners of the 1.6m property were spending Christmas in Costa Rica.

Ms Graves had been repeatedly hit on the head and face with the hammer. She was discovered by her sister.

Police were yesterday in Smugglers Lane and nearby Bosham Lane to give residents and visitors the chance to pass on any information that might lead to a breakthrough. They were due to be in the area again from 10am today.

They have asked all men who visit, work or live in the area to voluntarily attend DNA screening sessions.

Officers handed out leaflets and put up posters asking "all men aged over 17 who live, work or visit Bosham to help police find Valerie's killer by providing a simple DNA mouth swab and thumbprint" to "enable police to eliminate as many men as possible from the inquiry".

The drop-in sessions will take place at the Millstream Hotel in Bosham between January 21 and 29, February 2 and 7, and February 10 and 15, police said.
