The Royal Guardsmen - Snoopy #39;s Christmas (Rare Australian Radio Edit)
In the 60s, restrictions on the type of language that could be used on Australian radio were MUCH more stringent than they are today. This led to some songs being banned from radio airplay altogether. The Federation Of Australian Radio Broadcasters had a special committee to vet new releases, and adjudicate on those they considered to be of questionable lyric content. There were, from memory, 3 categories of ban...an A restriction, which was banned outright, a B restriction, which meant that the song had to be brought to management attention...and, I think a C category , which related to hours when children were more likely to be listening. One one of the victims of this censorship was the Snoopy series of hits by The Royal Guardsmen...these songs were not banned, but, the record company, Festival, was forced to service radio stations with a special edited version of each hit, with the word #39;bloody #39; beeped out. These #39;beeped #39; 45s were only ever supplied to radio, and were never available to the public. This upload features the #39;beeped #39; version of "Snoopy #39;s Christmas"...the censors had an easier time with this one, because, from memory, the word #39;bloody #39; only appeared once...near the start. #39;Qatar media censorship law ill advised #39;
http://www.youtube.com/SupperWorldNews Human Rights Watch has censured Qatar for a controversial draft media law that restricts the freedom of media and includes harsh penalties for those who criticize Qatar or its allies. The rights organization called on Qatari ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani not to pass the draft legislation, arguing that the proposed law is in contradiction with Qatar #39;s claims to be a center for free expression in the region. The draft law was approved by the Shura Council (Qatar #39;s legislative assembly) in June 2012 and still needs to be ratified by Sheikh Hamad. The draft, however, is the first change to the state #39;s media laws since Al Thani established the Doha Center for Media Freedom in 2008. Press TV has conducted an interview with Alfred Lambremont Webre, human rights war crimes lawyer, to further discuss the issue. This project engages theories of settler colonialism, biopower, and the state of exception to analyze the operations of rights-based narratives of citizenship in relation to political dissent in Canada. I argue that a normalized state of exception founds the white supremacist, settler colonial state, bringing Canadian citizenship into being as a (white) racialized, (cis)gendered, and (hetero)sexualized construct. By examining "resistance narratives" about the Toronto G20 that emerged in the post-G20 climate, my work argues that, in treating the policing practices employed during the G20 as exceptional and in (re)producing the exaltation of white heterosexual cis-masculine citizens, these narratives normalize and reinforce the daily operations of the exception, which targets Indigenous, racialized, and other "Others" in Canada. Finally, my work critically engages with the space of the Eastern Detention Centre (EDC) as a temporary camp set up to detain G20 arrestees, and with the narrative of "Torontonamo" that emerged to describe and explain the EDC. Reading the EDC in the context of other spatial organizations of the exception in Canada, I argue that the "Torontonamo" narrative reasserts race thinking in relation to the normalized operations of the exception. In so doing, it (re)produces white citizensubjects as the proper recipients of national and international human rights, while abandoning racialized populations to the space of the camp.
