Bill Hicks Revelations – Video

Bill Hicks Revelations
Bill Hicks faced ongoing problems with censorship. In 1984, Hicks was invited to appear on Late Night with David Letterman for the first time. He used to joke abut how he caused a serious accident that left a classmate in a wheelchair. NBC had a policy that no handicapped jokes could be aired on the show, making his stand-up routine impossible to perform without mentioning words like "wheelchair". On October 1, 1993, Hicks was scheduled to make his 12th appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, when his entire performance was removed from the broadcast; marking the only occasion where a comedian #39;s entire set was cut after taping. Hicks #39;s set was allegedly removed because Letterman and his producer were nervous about a religious joke ("If Jesus came back he might not want to see so many crosses"). Hicks said he believed it was due to a pro-life commercial aired during a break. Hicks never appeared on the show again. Hicks #39; mother appeared on the the show in 2009 and Letterman played the censored set in its entirety. He took full responsibility for the original censorship and apologized to Mrs. Hicks, declaring that he did not know what he was thinking when he pulled the routine: "It says more about me as a guy than it says about Bill because there was absolutely nothing wrong with that."From:MrBillOfRightsTVViews:0 0ratingsTime:56:23More inComedy

Were it left to us to decide whether we should have a government with a censored internet, or an uncensored internet without a government, we would not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. When the internet is free of censorship, and all mankind is able to access it, we shall witness a renaissance of world peace and collaboration never before imagined. There is not a truth existing which we fear. Nor is there a truth existing for which we would wish to be unknown to the whole world. Whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own governance. We shall continue to educate and inform the whole mass of the people. They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty. Sometimes it is said that the people cannot be trusted to govern themselves. Can we then, be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the form of kings to govern us? Let history answer this question. Experience has shown us, that even under the best forms of government; those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. U.S. punishes Iran for Internet censorship practices

Posted: at 11:41 am

Summary: The U.S. government has imposed sanctions on Iran due to its alleged harsh treatment of bloggers and online journalists.

The U.S. Department of State has placed sanctions on four Iranian individuals and five Iranian entities for the country's harsh treatment of bloggers, journalists and online activists.

The department announced the sanctions against Iranian individuals and entities -- otherwise known as governmental bodies or private companies -- for "having engaged in censorship or other activities that prohibit, limit, or penalize freedom of expression or assembly by citizens of Iran, or that limit access to print or broadcast media, including by jamming international satellite broadcasts into Iran, and related activities."

In addition, the department says "countless" activists, journalist, lawyers, students and artists have been detained, tortured and denied their human rights.

The sanctioned agencies include Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, the Iranian Press Supervisory Board, and the Center to Investigate Organized Crime which helps "identify Internet users who published material insulting government officials," according to the AFP.

Iranian Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Reza Taghipour, is charged as the person responsible for ordering satellite television broadcast signal jamming and restricting access to the Internet.

Access to Gmail was temporarily removed in Iran this year as an "involuntary" consequence of trying to reinforce the censorship of Google's video-sharing website YouTube.

"Unfortunately, we do not yet have enough technical knowhow to differentiate between these two services. We wanted to block YouTube and Gmail was also blocked, which was involuntary," Mohammad Reza Miri, a member of the telecommunications ministry committee said. "We absolutely do not want YouTube to be accessible."

The department says that the move will prevent American businesses from trading or working with the sanctioned individuals and entities. In addition, each individual and member of the government agencies or private firms are banned from visiting the United States.

Government officials say that the sanctions are aimed at drawing worldwide attention to Iran's practices of censoring their citizens. In addition, the department wishes to prevent the Iranian government from creating an "electronic curtain" which cuts the Iranian general public off from the rest of the world.

Iranian minister faces US sanctions for Internet censorship

Posted: at 11:41 am

The U.S. on Thursday said it ordered sanctions against Iran's Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Reza Taghipour, and other entities and persons responsible for engaging in censorship in their country.

Taghipour is blamed by the U.S. for ordering the jamming of satellite television broadcasts and restricting Internet connectivity, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of State.

Iran has for some time considered separating its own internal networks from the global Internet describing it as unsafe. Earlier this year, the Iranian Students' News Agency quoted Taghipour as saying that the Internet is an "unsafe network," and that Iran would use local software to create a national grid.

The Iranian government has also put restrictions on Internet users, according to civil rights groups.

Others sanctioned by the U.S. are Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and its Press Supervisory Board, which are said by the U.S. to have limited freedom of expression through their censorship and closure of newspapers and the detention of journalists. The Department of State said it is also designating key individuals and entities "responsible for assisting the regime in its crackdown on and censorship of the Iranian people."

The actions were taken under Section 403 of the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act of 2012, signed by U.S. President Barack Obama in August, and executive order 13628, which Obama signed into effect on Oct. 9.

As a result of the action, "U.S. persons are prohibited from engaging in transactions involving the designated individuals or entities, and all designated individuals and members of designated entities are subject to a ban on travel to the United States," the Department of State said. The action also blocks, or freezes, the property and interests in property of the designated individuals or entities.

The U.S. has already imposed a number of sanctions on Iran in connection with its nuclear program, which Iran insists is for peaceful purposes, but the U.S. holds may lead to Iran building a nuclear bomb.

The sanctions on Thursday which target "individuals and entities who have engaged in censorship or other activities with respect to Iran on or after June 12, 2009" was included in one of three orders sanctioning a total of 17 individuals and entities, including those charged with terrorism and with proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
