In the video, "Cao Ni Ma Style," or "Grass Mud Horse," he is seen dancing while wearing handcuffs. "Cao Ni Ma" is the first of ten mythical creatures created by Chinese people to express their resistance towards online censorship. The names of the animals are also homonyms of profanities. This video was banned in China. With "Gangnam Style" continuing to take the world by storm, many more artists and activists are using it as an opportunity to bring people together and make their voices heard. This playlist compiles other examples of activists leveraging this global sensation to spread awareness of human rights issues. 12 Chinese Writers Win Free Speech Award
A prestigious free speech award has been given to 12 writers, journalists, and activists from China, Human Rights Watch announced Thursday. In total, 41 writers from 19 countries received the 2012 Hellman/Hammett grants for promoting free expression in the midst of government harassment and persecution. The winners from China include ethnic Hans, Tibetans, Mongolians and Uighurs. The names of four Tibetan recipients were not announced due to safety concerns. All 12 have been detained or jailed, and seven are still in prison. They have endured unlawful house arrests, restrictions on their movement, and numerous threats and interrogations by police. Human Rights Watch says the oppression and intimidation of writers like these by the Chinese regime aims to discourage others from freely expressing themselves. This helps reinforce self-censorship, undermines free speech, and prevents the public from accessing the truth. Why would an authoritarian regime show a strident, anti-authoritarian film, that sends a message to overthrow a repressive regime? That #39;s the question many are asking after state-run CCTV, a tightly-managed propaganda mouthpiece, aired "V for Vendetta" last Friday (December 14). No explicit reason was given for the showing of the now seven-year-old film. And that got China #39;s netizens wondering. Many expressed disbelief. Others linked it to the apparent reform efforts of the country #39;s new Communist leaders. But a former propaganda staff isn #39;t so sure. [Zhu Xinxin, Former Editor at Hebei State Radio]: "Just like the media reports on anti-corruption, on arrest of corrupt officials, and so on. It seems that the government is working hard, and the public doesn #39;t have to worry about it. That #39;s actually forming an illusion for the public to keep hope in the regime." Complicating the picture is the huge size of the Communist Party #39;s propaganda apparatus, and the diverse views of those inside the system. Moscow, Dec 22 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Chechen authorities have shut down a local newspaper after its editor-in-chief asked Russian President Vladimir Putin a question, although they maintain it was not censorship.

Belkis Dudayeva, who heads the Put Kadyrova (Kadyrov's Way), got the floor for a couple of minutes during Putin's four-and-a-half-hour press conference in Moscow Thursday.

She managed to squeeze in two questions, one about the cause of unrest in the North Caucasus, which is plagued by Islamic insurgency, and the other about cuts at the state-owned Kavkaz radio.

Although Putin offered plenty of headline-grabbing comments Thursday, his replies to Dudayeva were unremarkable, as he noted the decrease in terrorist attacks and praised local media for their contribution.

The high point was when he snapped at journalists snickering at the seemingly sycophantic name of the newspaper, which he said had been named after Akhmad Kadyrov, the former Chechen rebel who became the republic's president under Putin, pacifying it with an iron fist until he was killed in a bomb attack in 2004.

Putin was, however, soon upstaged by Chechen authorities, who announced within hours that Put Kadyrova has been closed by its publishers, the Itum-Kalinsky district administration. The paper used Kadyrov's name without permission, Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, son of the late Akhmad Kadyrov, was cited as saying by the Chechen government website.

Dudayeva also asked "provocative questions" unrelated to district affairs, her paper's area of focus, the report said, without elaborating.

Officials at the Itum-Kalinsky district - a swath of mountain terrain with a population of 7,000 - could not comment, but a deputy district head admitted he learned about the closure from RIA Novosti. Paper representatives could not be reached for comment.

But a spokesman for Kadyrov Jr. told RIA Novosti that the paper was, indeed, shut down on the order of the district head.

Put Kadyrova was not authorised to use Kadyrov's name, Alvi Karimov confirmed.
