Censorship claims amid anti-Govt protests in Venezuela

Posted: at 10:46 am

By Juan Parada

Masked protesters set piles of debris on fire in Caracas on Thursday night, as anti-government protests continued for the ninth day in the Venezuelan capital.

"We do not have a future. We are fighting for our future," said one protester.

Protesters around the country have been demonstrating against shortages of basic goods, high inflation and high crime levels.

President Nicolas Maduro and his supporters say the escalating protests against his socialist government are part of an attempted coup sponsored by right-wing and "fascist" opponents in Venezuela and abroad.

At a government event in the capital, he accused protesters of attacking rail workers during protests.

"Pick on me! I am the president, pick on me. There's no problem. Come against me. I do not care. But workers must be respected," Mr Maduro said.

Meanwhile, Henrique Capriles, Opposition leader and former presidential candidate, called on Thursday for the Government to "disarm illegal armed groups", who he claims are being used by the Government to target protesters.

"I ask for you [Mr Maduro] to disarm illegal armed groups, as it is not true that the arms of the Republic are only in the hands of the armed forces," he said in Caracas.

More than a week of protests, beginning with a mass opposition rally on February 12, has resulted in at least six deaths and more than 100 injuries, including beauty queen Genesis Carmona, shot in the head at a protest in the city of Valencia.

NAU interdisciplinary conference tackles censorship

Posted: at 7:42 pm

Northern Arizona Universitys Graduate English Organization is hosting the 14th Annual Peaks Interdisciplinary Conference this weekend.

The topic of the conference is Censorship and Silence: Reading Between the Lines. According to the conference website, the purpose of the 14th Annual Peaks Interdisciplinary Conference is to strike sparks regarding censorship and silence in the interdisciplinary arena.

Whether we consider banned media, silenced groups, or even small acts of passivity, reading between the lines of the spoken and unspoken is becoming increasingly necessitated in todays society, the conference website states.

The keynote speaker will be NAU Spanish professor and Director of Latin American Studies Robert Neustadt.

In his presentation, titled Looking Beyond the Wall: Encountering the Humanitarian Crisis on the Border with Students, Neustadt will describe the field trips he has been taking with students to the Arizona-Mexico border since 2010.

Topics will include the environmental, financial, political and humanitarian costs of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, as well as the us versus them perspective on undocumented immigration and how experiential education can break down barriers.

The presentation will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in Room 120 in the Liberal Arts Building.

The Peaks Conference will run today through Sunday in the Liberal Arts Building, which is Building 18 on the NAU campus. Attendance is free to the public.

More information and a complete schedule of events is available online at peaksconference.weebly.com.

Censored in Beijing: a correspondent watches himself fade to black

Posted: at 7:42 pm

The Monitor's Peter Ford knows censorship happens all the time on his China beat. But when it happened to him in an interview with CNN, he felt punched in the gut.

Its not as if Ive been physically assaulted, I grant you. But I certainly feel violated that nauseous sensation when you realize your home has been burgled.

Ive been censored.

One moment I was on the TV screen, a guest of CNNs On China talk show discussing press freedom in China, and the next I wasnt. The screen went black. The Chinese censors had pulled the plug. Where there was light, they brought darkness. Nobody in mainland China could watch the program.

Well of course, you will say. You are in China. What do you expect? The freedom to talk publicly about the lack of freedom?

And, of course, I know perfectly well that almost all of my Chinese colleagues are censored, or forced to self-censor, every day.

But this was my first time. And the first time is different.

As well as my day job being The Christian Science Monitors correspondent in China, I am also president of the Foreign Correspondents Club of China. That means people come to me when they want to know about foreign correspondents working conditions in China.
