Google Encrypts China Search Results To Prevent Surveillance

Posted: at 4:41 am

The Silicon Valley tech giant announced that it is encrypting web searches in China, in order to protect users from unauthorized surveillance and censorship by government entities or hackers. Google announced that any text entered into its search engine will be automatically encrypted, making the information indecipherable. This new development could render the so-called Great Firewall of China, the nations infamous online censorship system, useless in tracking Google users activity.

The new encryptions will prevent external entities from viewing user activity, allowing users to search Chinas sensitive search terms, like Tiananmen Square or Dalai Lama, without detection. But while the encryption adds a layer of protection to users, China can and does control the search results that return.

Google rolled out the added security measures after the U.S. National Security Agency was revealed by whistleblower Edward Snowden to be operating a data-mining scheme known as PRISM. Google, and other tech companies like Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO), have announcedsimilar security measures against future unauthorized access from either hackers or state entities.

The revelations of this past summer underscored our need to strengthen our networks, a Google spokesman announced. Among the many improvements weve made in recent months is to encrypt Google Search by default around the world.

Googles uneasy relationship with Beijing has made encryption a difficult pursuit, while most other users around the world have been able to opt into encrypted searches since 2010. This marks the first time Google has enabled the extra security as a default setting in China.

This builds on our work over the past few years to increase the number of our services that are encrypted by default and encourage the industry to adopt stronger security standards, said the spokesman.

After Googles official departure from mainland China in 2011 (while still operating freely in Hong Kong), Chinas homegrown search-engine Baidu solidified its dominance there. The Beijing-based company, though not state-owned, does abide by government censorship laws, often also using self-censorship.

China shuts down popular WeChat accounts as censorship continues

Posted: at 4:41 am

Government watchdogs have scrubbed from the Web the accounts of several journalists as Beijing wraps up its annual parliament meeting.

The censors are once again targeting China's popular messaging app WeChat.

Chinese government officials on Thursday closed down a host of popular accounts run by journalists and columnists, according to reports out of the country. The move was seen as a response to possible criticism of the government, which held its annual parliament meeting on Thursday. The accounts were shuttered before Premier Li Keqiang started a news conference to announce the end of those meetings, according to reports.

Tencent Holdings, WeChat's owner, didn't seem upset by the government's move. Speaking to Reuters, which reported on the takedowns, a spokesman for Tencent said that it's always reviewing "suspicious causes of spam, violent, pornographic, and illegal content." The company even has a 24-hour hotline for users to report abuse.

WeChat was hit last year with a different kind of censorship, as the government banned users from sending messages containing any mention of Southern Weekly, a newspaper that spoke out against press control across China.

Russia Blocks Internet Sites of Putin Critics

Posted: at 4:41 am

An anonymous reader writes in with news about Russias censorship of internet sites critical of President Vladimir Putin. "Russia blocked access to the internet sites of prominent Kremlin foes Alexei Navalny and Garry Kasparov on Thursday under a new law critics say is designed to silence dissent in President Vladimir Putin's third term. The prosecutor general's office ordered Russian internet providers to block Navalny's blog, chess champion and Putin critic Kasparov's internet newspaper and two other sites, grani.ru and ej.ru, state regulator Roskomnadzor said. The move was the latest evidence of what government opponents see as a crackdown on independent media and particularly the internet, a platform for dissenting views in a nation where state channels dominate the airwaves. Ej.ru editor Alexander Ryklin called it 'monstrous' and a 'direct violation of all the principles of freedom of speech,' More at EFF, and in earlier stories at the The Huffington Post, and Deutsche Welle, which notes, 'This year's report by Reporters Without Borders on World Day against Cyber Censorship condemns Russia as one of the "Enemies of the Internet." "Russia has adopted dangerous legislation governing the flow of news and information and freedom of expression online," it concludes.'"
