Mysterious spate of official suicides in China sparks debate, censorship

Posted: at 6:42 am

BEIJING A series of mysterious apparent suicides by Chinese officials in the past three weeks, including of two senior figures, has sparked debate and questions among ordinary people here, as well as a fresh round of online censorship.

Was President Xi Jinpings anti-corruption drive putting so much pressure on his ruling Communist Party that some members were being driven to take their own lives? Was it all just a coincidence? Or does a life of deceit and hypocrisy eventually take its toll?

Chinese media reported Thursday that 58-year-old Xu Yean, a deputy director in the State Bureau for Letters and Calls, was found hanged in his office earlier in the week.

Xus department handles the petitions and complaints of ordinary citizens against local government officials. Although Xu had not been publicly linked with any corruption investigation, a senior colleague was fired and placed under investigation last November for a severe violation of party discipline.

Yu Jianrong, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), was quoted as saying on social media at that time that the department had become one of the most corrupt sectors of the government, often using its power to extract bribes from local officials to silence complaints.

He Gaobo, a local official responsible for building safety in the city of Fenghua in the eastern province of Zhejiang, was found dead in another suspected suicide Wednesday, five days after an apartment building collapsed in the city.

Local media reported the building had been declared unsafe months before, but no action had been taken to repair it. Three people involved in the buildings construction have been arrested in connection with that case, media reported.

Last Friday, senior policeman Zhou Yu was found hanged in a hotel room in the central Chinese city of Chongqing. Zhou had been a major figure in a crackdown on organized crime in the city under the leadership of Bo Xilai, a senior Communist Party leader who was imprisoned for corruption. He was reported to be depressed about health issues related to diabetes and cirrhosis of the liver.

A senior official at state-owned power generation company Datang was also reported to have died in suspicious circumstances March 29, after being physically unwell and depressed, although the company denied it was suicide.

But perhaps the most sensational death of all was that of Li Wufeng, a 56-year-old known as Chinas top Internet cop, who was reportedly involved in maintaining a system of online censorship known as the Great Firewall of China. He was said to have jumped to his death from the sixth floor of his office building March 24 after constantly being in a bad mood, local media reported.

Instances of censorship on the rise: The Hoot

Posted: at 6:42 am

Censorship across the country is on the rise with as many as 52 instances being recorded in the first quarter of 2014. Releasing data on censorship for the first three months of this year, media watch group, The Hoot, said this averaged a little less than one a day.

The agents against free expression were not just the state or fringe groups. The list is fairly long and includes courts, student organisations, State governments, publishing houses, the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the Central Board of Film Certification, a lawyers association, Hindu groups including the Shiv Sena, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Hindu Jan Jagruti Samiti the Information & Broadcasting Ministry, Tamil groups and individual industrialists.

Under attack were books, newspapers, films, Facebook posts, telecasts, staging of plays and the exhibition of films. As per The Hoots Free Speech Hub Tracker, the most newsworthy blackout was by the Lok Sabha Secretariat of the discussion on the contentious Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill.

The Hoot also flags the invocation of the colonial vintage sedition law against 67 Kashmiri students of a Meerut-based university for allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans during an India-Pakistan cricket match. Another highlight of the list is the withdrawal of American Indologist Wendy Donigers books by two publishers Penguin and Aleph after a Delhi-based group, the Shiksha Bachao Andolan (SBA), objected to them on the ground that they included derogatory references about Hinduism.

While Penguin withdrew Ms. Donigers book The Hindus: An Alternate History from India after pursuing the case filed by the SBA for a couple of years, the Aleph Book Company agreed to do the same with her book, On Hinduism, after it was threatened with legal action.

Also, according to The Hoot, the first quarter saw several films contesting bans on screening, three of them at the behest of right wing or pro-Hindutva groups. In one instance, in which RSS workers stopped the screening of the Kashmiri documentary film, Ocean of Tears, in Thrissur, Kerala, the police removed the protesters from the theatre hall. But in the same district, a Dalit musician was barred from performing at the famous Guruvayoor Temple. In Mumbai, Shiv Sainiks stopped a press conference by a Pakistani Sufi music group.

The list also includes an attack on the Caravan magazines offices for publishing an interview with Samjhauta Express blast accused Aseemanand, besides industrialist Shiv Nadar and Union Minister Praful Patel who succeeded in stopping the publication of uncomfortable biographies.

Anti-Censorship Awards Go To White House, Feds

Posted: April 10, 2014 at 3:48 am

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) The White House and the federal government have won the dubious honor of a "Jefferson Muzzle" for snooping on the news media and limiting access.

The censorship-shaming awards announced Wednesday by the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression are intended to draw a harsh light on people and institutions that engage in the most egregious affronts to the First Amendment.

Other recipients included the governing board of Kansas' public universities. A new board policy says faculty members who use social media to disrupt "harmony among co-workers" or make comments deemed "contrary to the best interest of the university" can be fired. The policy was a reaction to a faculty member's statements on his personal Twitter.

The awards are announced each year on or near the April 13 birthday of Jefferson, a free-speech advocate and the nation's third president. Winners get a T-shirt with Jefferson's likeness and a black rectangle over his mouth.

Josh Wheeler, director of the Charlottesville center, said in the Muzzles' 23-year history, he can't remember a time in which free press issues dominated the awards.

"From the White House to the statehouse, from universities to high schools, members of the press have had to defend against a variety of challenges, some never seen before," Wheeler said in a statement.

The White House collected a Muzzle for limiting photographers' access at events deemed private. The presidents of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and The Associated Press have urged their members to stop using White House handout photos and video, saying they amount to propaganda.

The Obama administration has said the handouts allow the public greater access to the inner workings of the administration.

The U.S. Justice Department was singled out for seizing telephone records of AP reporters and editors and for falsely labeling a Fox News reporter a criminal co-conspirator to obtain a search warrant for his phone records and emails.

The Justice Department announced in February it was revising its rules for obtaining records from the media in leak investigations to give news organizations an opportunity to challenge any subpoenas or search warrants in federal court.

Dr M Cites Anti-Nazi Laws as Proof Of Censorship In The West

Posted: at 3:48 am

Details Published on Wednesday, 09 April 2014 17:39

PIC: The Malay MailKUALA LUMPUR: The Western world has no right to lecture other nations on freedom of speech as it too practices censorship of anti-Semitic views, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed today.

Malaysias former prime minister - known for his controversial views about Jews - alleged today that should anybody say anything bad about the Jews, they would be censored and any of their publications would be blocked from being published or sold in even major bookshops.

Dr Mahathir had previously stoked controversy when he suggested in 2010 that the September 11, 2001 attacks against the United States had been staged as an excuse to mount attacks on the Muslim world.

In 2003, he also sparked outrage when he said that Jews ruled the world by proxy by getting others to fight and die for them.

The West has therefore no right to lecture others about freedom of speech, of the media or of publication, Dr Mahathir wrote in a posting on his blog today.

They themselves do not practice what they preach. They are the worst censors in the world.

According to Dr Mahathir, the censorship was a result of the Jews demanding that nothing bad be said about them, which was accommodated by the governments of the Western world.

In making his point, he cited the case of English writer David Irving, who was according to him arrested in Austria, tried, and jailed for being anti-Semitic after claiming that the number of Jews killed by the German Nazis were fewer than six million.

That is the extent of censorship in Europe. Even if you say anything supposedly anti-semitic in another country, you may be jailed by any European country, added Dr Mahathir.

The west censors more, says Dr M

Posted: at 3:48 am

Dr Mahathir chides the Western world for being more rigid with their media censorship.

PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad continued his tirade against the western media saying that the media in western world were the worst censors.

He said, however, the western media was always quick to condemn others, especially eastern media of censorship.

In making a comparison when he was Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir said he was often accused by Western nations, particularly the Western media, of controlling the press.

Since retirement I read a lot about the administration of Western countries. The censorship they practise on their press and publication is more stringent than anything we have seen here. said Dr Mahathir.

Dr Mahathir further took a dig at how the Americans and the Western media have been totally forbidden to utter anything against the Jews and in specific Israel. He also said, They may not also report about the un-American activities of the Jews in their own country.

Dr Mahathir went on to narrate how the banking system in United States (US), that is controlled by Jews, have been manipulating politicians into going into meaningless wars in order to earn profits,

They abuse the financial systems to such an extent that financial crises would plague the countries and even the world every now and again. And when they go bankrupt they force governments to borrow money from them to bail out their companies and banks.

He particularly picked on Rothschild and his family who created the banking system and the setting up of the Federal Reserve System as the central bank of the US saying that: Almost all the other great bankers in the US and European countries were people with clearly Jewish namesbut effectively this fact is not allowed to be mentioned.

Dr Mahathir in drilling his argument deeper said that the media and publishers have practically been barred from publishing anything that may be considered anti-Semitic and if they tried, it will be censored.
