Banned Books Weekis drawing to a close, but you still have two more days tocelebratecensorship (or rather, the end thereof).

So for this weeks mix, librarian Tony Ross, of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, curated a list of songs (disclaimer: some are explicit) that have been dubbed inappropriate by the powers that be. Some tracks are obvious. Youcould very easily make a list of 60 songs, said Ross, there was a lot that was banned. Profanityor suggestive lyrics are a surefire path to parental advisory sticker. But what about protest songs during Vietnam? Or singers who supported the labor movement? Rapper Eminem vs.former president George W. Bush? All had problems.

As librarians, were all about providing access, explained Ross, not just to books but all kinds of art and experiences.Any time you talk about limited access that raises our hackles.

1. Love For Sale Cole Porteras sung by Billie Holiday

This Cole Porter song written/sung from the perspective of a prostitute is from the 1930 Broadwaymusical The New Yorkers. The original staging had a white actress singing it in front of apopular restaurant of the day, however in response to negative public reaction, the producersrestaged it with a black actress singing it in front of The Cotton Club. Despite its popularity, thesong was banned from radio at the time, as was this later Billie Holiday version.

2. Take Your Hand Off It Billy Hughes

In 1948, the vice mayor and police chief of Memphis agreed that three songs popular on localjukeboxes were obscene. Police rounded up and destroyed about 400 records including thiscountry swing song with its double entendre lyrics. The other songs were Operation Blues byAmos Milburn and Move Your Hand Baby by Count Waterford.

3. The Hammer Song The Weavers In 1950, The Weavers had a No. 1hit with their version of Goodnight Irene and appearedpoised for long-term success. However, the folk quartets ties to the progressive labor movementled to two of them (one was Pete Seeger) being called before the Sen. Joe McCarthysHouse Committee on Un-American Activities. They refused to testify and were summarilyblacklisted and placed under FBI surveillance. Their record label terminated The Weavers contractand refused to sell their records. They were forbidden from playing on the radio or TV,and concert promoters were strongly encouraged not to book them, and with no means tomake a living the group disbanded in 1952. Following the Red Scare, they reformed in variousincarnations, culminating in a famous 1980 concert at Carnegie Hall.

4. Louie, Louie The Kingsmen

Although the song had been recorded by several artists since 1955, you probably are mostfamiliar with this 1963 version. Recorded in a rush under trying conditions with a singer wearingnew braces and unable to fully enunciate, the slurred lyrics engendered an countrywide urbanlegend that there were filthy lyrics concealed in the song. Indianas Governor personallybanned it from the states airwaves, and FBI bureaus in a number of states were required toinvestigate allegations of interstate commerce of obscene materials related to the sale of thesingle.

How to Get Away With Murder Star Viola Davis Loves Spanx and TV Censorship: Watch Her Reveal Why!

Posted: at 11:41 am

by Kaitlyn Durocher Wed., Sep. 24, 2014 5:31 PM PDT

What do both Spanx and TV censorship have in common? Actress Viola Davis is a fan of both!

In a funny interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week, Davis revealed her feelings for those two very different things.

"I tell people that if I don't have ten minutes to go to the bathroom then I'm just going to have to hold it. Because that's how long it takes to take these Spanx off," Davis joked in the interview.

She went on to say the reason she wears the garments is so she can fit into the sexy clothes of her character on her new series How to Get Away With Murder.

Davis stars in the show as a sexy law professor who, along with her students, find themselves entangled in a murder plot.

This is also why The Help actress is in favor of TV censorship. The star told Kimmel she wears body makeup all over, even on her feet, to make herself look good on screen. Davis also admitted she doesn't like certain parts of her body to be shown, which is why she says TV censorship is another one of her favorites.

We can't wait to see Davis back on the screen!

How to Get Away with Murder will air this Thursday night on ABC.

Sedition blitz will lead to self-censorship in universities, warn academics

Posted: at 11:41 am

(September 25): Putrajaya's sedition blitz, which included charging a law lecturer, has created a climate of fear which will lead to self-censorship among academics and students in institutions of higher learning, a forum on academic freedom was told last night.

If the fear continues, it will be an unhealthy development which will further cripple the roles of universities as a place to cultivate critical thinking, debate and feedback, said academics at the forum at Universiti Malaya.

Political economist Professor Dr Edmund Terence Gomez said academics and students should not succumb to the government's ongoing sedition spree by self-censoring their expressions.

"I am concerned with the stifling of academic freedom which will lead to self-censorship and that is not the way to run a university and debate ideas," he said.

Gomez's colleague, law lecturer Associate Professor Dr Azmi Sharom, was recently charged under the Sedition Act for commenting on what had happened in Perak in the 2009 constitutional crisis a move that sent shockwaves through the academia and legal fraternities.

Azmi joined a slew of individuals, including opposition politicians, activists, a lawyer, a journalist as well as two Muslim ulama who have either been charged with sedition, are facing trial or being investigated.

Gomez said there should be concrete action such as creating awareness by shining the international spotlight on the current sedition blitz.

"If we continue to sit back and let it be, then the university is finished. If we keep quiet, we can expect more of this to continue.

"If we mount a campaign, the government will sit up and take notice. We need to take this out to the international domain. Once it goes international, the government will be concerned because no one wants this kind of publicity," he said.

The academician with Malaysia's oldest university said academics and students must be given a free rein to discuss problems because universities have always been recognised as a safe place to debate and discuss ideas.

Denver Students Protest Censorship Of History In Curriculum

Posted: at 4:41 pm

One poster said Censoring history = No Education.

Another read We deserve to know the truth.

The signs were just a few lining the streets as hundreds of students from at least seven Denver-area schools walked out of their classrooms Tuesday and Wednesday to protest a proposal by a member of the Jefferson County School Board, according to CNN affiliates KDVR and KMGH.

The proposal calls for a new panel to review the schools curricula, but thats not the part that has students and parents outraged.

It is the call for a review of the Advanced Placement curriculum for U.S. history classes to ensure that teaching materials present positive aspects of U.S. history and its heritage. According to the wording of the proposal, teaching materials should promote citizenship, patriotism (and) respect for authority and not encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law.

I understand that they want to take out our very important history of slavery and dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because it portrays the U.S. in a negative light, said Casey McAndrew, a high school senior.

Ben Murky, a high school junior, said, The censorship of U.S. history is wrong, and I think its pretty communist.

The protest followed walkouts by students on Monday and a protest Friday, when at least 50 teachers called in sick, according to KDVR.

I think its time we hear from the kids on how its impacting them, because it is, and its very scary for them whats happening here, parent Andrea Stevens said.

Jefferson County Superintendent Dan McMinimee tried to stem the outrage by stressing that no changes in the curriculum have been finalized.
