simbu: Simbu sings a trance number for Yuvan Shankar Raja | Tamil … – Times of India

Posted: March 29, 2017 at 11:32 am

Only a few days ago, Simbu, who is turning composer with Santhanam's Sakka Podu Podu Raja, had recorded a song with his good friend Yuvan Shankar Raja. Now, Yuvan has returned the favour by roping in STR to sing a trance number in Dharani Dharan's Raja Ranguski, which stars Metro Shirish and Chandini in the lead. "I've always admired the Yuvan-Simbu combo, which has given us many hit number in the past. So, when we were thinking of whom to bring in a singer for a solo trance song, we decided to go with Simbu because the lines by lyricist Mohanraj seemed to reflect the actor's character. In fact, after recording the song, Naan Yaarunu Theriyuma, STR himself remarked on this, and that is when we let him know that it was the reason we asked him to sing this number," reveals Shirish, who adds that the recording session, which happened on Monday night, was a fanboy moment to remember for him. The song, he tells us, will appear as a montage in the film and will be picturised on him. "We have finished 75-80% of the film, and we will be wrapping up the shoot soon," he informs.

Sander van Doorn’s new alias, Purple Haze, explores the darker side of trance – Dancing Astronaut

Posted: March 23, 2017 at 2:07 pm

Sander vanDoorn has been a trance force to-be-reckoned since the mid-2000s. Before transitioning into a moreprogressive house style, the Dutch producer actually nestled hisearly recording career in the tech-trance pillar of dance music. Over the weekend,Sanders socials went completely dark in a move that ultimately signified a return to this style.Emerging from the ashes was the launch of his alter ego: Purple Haze.

Themove towards a new moniker surfaced when van Doorn previewed the track Neilojon A State of Trance(Episode 804) earlier this month. The mastered version of Neiloj is set for May 15 release on his Doorn Records imprint.

The full live experience will be revealed during the official Purple Haze launch at Ultra Music Festival in Miami, although he beganpreviewing new material in Australia last week. What better timing for the official debut of such a creative pursuit, which marks a return to van Doorns darker, moodierbeginnings; if nothing else, the project demonstrates his versatility as an artist as well as howattuned he is toindustry trends.

Given the sheerquality and sharp, sinister feelof Purple Haze Bliksem, wereincredibly eagerto see whats in store for the trance luminary duringMiami Music Week.

Underworld’s Karl Hyde on Moving Beyond Trance and "Getting Off" at Ultra – Miami New Times

Posted: March 21, 2017 at 12:01 pm

Karl Hyde (left) and Rick Smith

There's a 2007 episode of the BBC Two program The Culture Show that closes with Underworld performing its seminal 1996 hit, "Born Slippy .NUXX" in an anonymous English field. While his longtime creative partner Rick Smith and Underworld touring member Darren Price fiddle away at the monolithic mixing board in front of them, band frontman and lyricist Karl Hyde writhes in tight-fitting jeans and a tee better suited for a lanky, angst-ridden teenager than a 50-year-old Englishman. With the song and show winding to their inevitable conclusion, Hyde begins prancing about, hopping over a dalmatian and rattling off a series of non sequiturs: "We live in a field! We come from Essex! I wasn't always like this, you know!"

As even the most casual Underworld fan could tell you, seemingly incoherent musings that add up to a greater poetic whole are nothing new from Hyde; this is, after all, the man who completed the Herculean task of transforming "Mmm... Skyscraper I Love You" from a nonsensical phrase scribbled in his notebook into a head-nodding, club-booming generational touchstone. No, what's weird about this performance is the notion that Hyde didn't emerge from the womb fully formed with a trickster's smile and a keenly developed sense of the weird and exciting.

According to Hyde, it's this same sense an essential part of his creative process, which sees him roaming streets around the world to render people and places into perfervid impressionistic lyrics that has left him unable to recall a single memorable Miami anecdote despite having swung through the city several times over the course of his travels.

"Because of the way I write, I'm more documenting little details wandering the streets, kind of bump[ing] into characters out on the streets at night or in the early morning," Hyde explains. "So I'm documenting all these little details, and they never make really good stories. They make fantastic lyrics, but in terms of anecdotes... [laughs]."

When Underworld returns to Ultra's Live Stage March 26, it will mark the fourth time the techno pioneers have graced the orgiastic Miami music festival with their presence, having previously performed in 2003, 2008, and 2011. As a veteran of the electronic music scene, Hyde is all too aware of the ever-evolving nature of both Ultra audiences and Underworld's own live shows.

"One of the great things about the explosion of EDM in the U.S. is that it introduced a vast audience to a genre of music we've been a part of for almost 30 years," Hyde says, "and so there are hundreds of thousands of people who want to know where this stuff came from, want to know about the history of it."

When speaking about that history, Hyde is as articulate as his lyrics are fragmented; unlike the disco-and-R&B-indebted dance music that pervaded American nightclubs and discotheques in the '80s and '90s, Underworld found much of its early inspiration in'70s avant-pop music. "Rick [Smith] and I grew up reading the philosophies of people like [King Crimson leader and guitarist] Robert Fripp and Brian Eno, and we were very heavily influenced by that generation people like Kraftwerk and David Bowie as well. They were all very important to us."

Besides conveniently preparing Hyde for his eventual collaborations with Eno, Hyde and Smith's studious appreciation of their forebears enabled their work as Underworld to stand apart, leaving a legacy far beyond from the DJ mixes and illegal warehouse raves in which their music initially gained traction. Even records as recent as the band's latest, 2016's Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future, have seen Hyde and Smith continually influenced by their creative predecessors rather than their contemporaries.

"When CD culture was around, CDs became the equivalent of double albums that you saw around the vinyl era. And it kind of got boring they were too long," Hyde says of the sometimes unwieldy length of earlier Underworld records. "It's great to explore again what it was that was so exciting about vinyl, and the idea that there were two sides and you flip them over and then you got to the end of side two. If you really enjoyed it, you wanted to go back to side one again. If the collection was too big, then your ears just get tired and you kind of get fed up. We wanted to... make the collection of tracks shorter than previous albums so that there was a sense of loss, if you like, at the end of that record that you wanted to hear it again."

It's a decision that seems to have paid off. As Hyde himself notes, Barbara Barbara brought a number of younger listeners into the Underworld fold, many of whom will see the band for the first time at Ultra. Per Hyde, the group's headlining status at Ultra precludes the possibility of the sort of freewheeling show for which the band was once known.

"The dimension of audiences changes over the years. In the '90s, all of our shows were totally improvised, and that was indicative of the scene that was going on at the time," Hyde observes. "It was about trance; it was about exploring sounds and deconstructing the songs so that they became about generating grooves and vocal performances that enhanced that feeling of 'we've all come together to dance and to celebrate.' Over the years, audiences change, and things like trance became something of the past, and we all moved on. With a festival audience, it's different from an audience [there only for an Underworld performance].

"Most of the people who come to our own gigs know the material, so you can explore a looser way of working. But with a festival, you're largely playing to lots of people who don't know most of what you're playing, so you need to put a show together which is going to be your most exciting and your most appealing... that's going to draw people in. So in that case, you have to think about crafting something. We need to stay fresh and [for the music] to remain a challenge to us so that what people experience is us," Hyde chuckles, "really getting off on the music we're playing."

As the foremost wordsmith of electronic music, Hyde has forged a successful career out of conjuring both emotional resonance and dance-floor ecstasy from deliberately obtuse observations and lyrics. Given his three decades of fruitful creative collaboration with Smith, Hyde doesn't see any reason to tinker with a proven formula, and the two plan to polish new Underworld material that was recorded while on the road last year.

"Barbara, Barbara underlined the fact that we experience something together that we don't experience with anybody else. There's this surprise and challenge... Because we've known each other for so long, we can look at each other and push each other over the edge, and that's where we like to be; we like to be over the edge. And that happens in those moments where Rick and I get together in the room and look at each other and go... 'OK, what've you got?'"

Tattooed devotees transform in Thai temple trance (PHOTOS … – Coconuts

Deep in trances, devotees of a Thai temple charged through gathered crowds on Saturday mimicking the beasts on their tattoos.

Some had their hands curled into tiger claws, some became crocodiles, some were transformed into Hanuman, the monkey god.

The annual tattoo festival at Wat Bang Phra, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Bangkok, draws thousands of devotees every year who come to recharge the power of sacred Sak Yant tattoos.

The tattoos are inked by Buddhist monks using sharpened bamboo sticks or long metal needles. Originally etched for warriors needing protection in battle, they are also believed to bring luck and give strength.

But every year, their magic power needs to be restored at the festival, where thousands of devotees pay their respects to the temples master tattooist.

Not everyone goes into a trance. Those who do take on the characteristics of their tattoos. They try to charge toward the temple, but are held back by a wall of temple guards and soldiers.

Amid all the house, bass, techno, and beyond at Miami Music Week, it can be easy to forget about trance unless, of course, you're a devoted member of the #TranceFamily. Trance has been an integral part of Miami dance music; residencies such as George Acosta at Shadow Lounge and Edgar V and Markus Schulz at Space are the stuff of legend. And trance still shows its face around town, even if not with the frequency it did 15 years ago.

So let this serve as an agenda so that #TranceFamily brothers and sisters can soak in psy, tech, progressive, hard, classic, and uplifting. Let this be a compass for those who religiously listen to A State of Trance every Thursday at 2 p.m. Let this be a megaphone for those who unanimously agree Ferry Corsten is a genius. Wednesday through Sunday, this is the trance game plan.

Aly & Fila Six-Hour Set. 11 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Heart Nightclub, 50 NE 11th St., Miami; 305-912-3099; heartnightclub.com. Tickets $20 to $30 via tickets.heartnightclub.com. Egyptians Aly El Sayed Amr Fathalah and Fadi Wassef Naguib are most comfortable smashing it out around 138 bpm. Their glorious buildups followed by hard bass lines mark the uplifting trance experience for which they are known. In 2015, Aly & Fila used the Great Pyramid of Giza as their breathtaking backdrop during an unforgettable show. Wednesday's six-hour marathon will happen in Heart's dark basement room and for a night of trance, it's just as fitting.

United We Groove. With Kristina Sky, Nifra, and Judah. 1 to 11 p.m. Friday, March 24, on the C-Level Rooftop Terrace at the Clevelander, 1020 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach; 305-532-4006; clevelander.com. Free with RSVP at kristinasky.com/miami2017. California-based trance matriarch Kristina Sky will be joined by Coldharbour's Nifra and Anjunabeats' Judah. "I'm trying to take things back to basics, because it felt like for trance and progressive there was a demand for something like this, and I am happy to try to provide it," Sky says. If going "back to basics" means when dance music wasn't publicly traded on Wall Street and bottle service was nonexistent, count us in. Sky considered playing an extended set, but United We Groove is about sharing the stage and supporting other artists.

Cosmic Gate & Friends Sunset Cruise. 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25, on the Biscayne Lady yacht, 401 Biscayne Blvd., Miami; magneticgrooves.com. Tickets cost $125 to $165 via wantickets.com. Imagine listening to Claus Terhoeven and Stefan Bossems' hypnotic beats while sailing the blue waters of Biscayne Bay. Well, for a hefty price tag, you can live the real thing. And admission includes a premium open bar, so you should come out ahead if you can earn your sea legs before the cruise is over. And, honestly, can you put a price on soaking up the sun while "Exploration of Space" bangs in the background?

Markus Schulz Open-to-Close. 11 p.m. Sunday, March 26, in the Main Room at Heart Nightclub, 50 NE 11th St., Miami; 305-912-3099; heartnightclub.com. Tickets cost $20 to $30 via tickets.heartnightclub.com. If you're unfortunate enough to miss A State of Trance and Armin van Buuren's annual Sunday takeover at Ultra, there's still a reason to close out the weekend dancing. Markus Schulz has taken it upon himself to open and close Heart. Dubbed the "unicorn slayer" by fans for his refusal to rely on "unicorn melodies" light and upbeat melodies many DJs use to build up their sets Schulz takes the crowd on a transonic ride to the dark side and releases them into the rabbit hole.

Trance band Above & Beyond say they were always fascinated with India’s culture – Hindustan Times

Posted: at 7:28 am

Paavo Siljamki and Tony McGuinness of Above & Beyond talk about their love for all things Indian, trance music and rerecording a local version of their track.

The three-member English progressive trance group, Above & Beyond performed in Mumbai at a Holi event. Comprising Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamki, the band has been ranked in the top 100 by DJ Magazine. With songs such as No one on earth and Were all we need, the outfit has established themselves on the international music scene. Talking to HT Caf, Siljamki and McGuinness give us their take on Indian culture, food and their inspiration, among other things.

How does it feel to come back to India? What is different about performing in India?

Siljamki: Weve been fascinated by Indias culture, people, food, music and parties ever since we started our label Anjunabeats in 1999. The Indian electronic music scene, especially in the last five years, has been growing rapidly. Theres always so much enthusiasm and energy in the parties that happen in the country. We cant get enough of them.

Above & Beyond has collaborated with Bangalore-based band Lagori. (HTPhoto)

What has been your biggest inspiration when it comes to making music?

McGuinness: It can be almost anything a book that weve read, a film weve seen or something that sparks a train of thought and needs a musical or lyrical solution. And, noodling on an instrument be it a guitar or a piano or a synth is a fruitful route as well.

Do you follow Bollywood? Can your Indian fans expect collaboration with Indian artiste in the future?

McGuinness: We have collaborated with the Bangalore-based band Lagori. They have recorded the Indian versions of our songs Sun & moon and Were all we need. They rewrote the verses in both the cases but used the choruses from the English versions.

Watch the official video of Sun & moon here:

How has trance music changed over the years?

McGuinness: Trance has permeated into various genres of EDM. In 1998, you could see a gaping gap between trance, house, electro, and techno with tumbleweeds rolling through them. You cant make similar distinctions today. Arguably, what Swedish House Mafia became famous for playing is more in tune with old fashion trance music from 1998 than with house music from the same year.
