Relive The Best Sets of Luminosity Beach Festival 2016 – EDM Identity (blog)

Posted: June 23, 2017 at 6:27 am

Relive Luminosity Beach Festival 2016 by watching some of the best sets from 5 legendary trance artists.

Luminosity Beach Festival is the dream destination of the worldwide trance family every year. The best of the best in trance descend upon Bloemendaal Beach in The Netherlands spoiling us with their sounds for four amazing days of music. The journeys, classics, producer sets, IDs and more are out in full force!

Until I can travel to Europe myself for this event, I will live vicariously through the stories, videos, and memories of my friends who attend every year. I spend a ton of time listening to and watching all of the sets that are released by Luminosity Events. It makes my heart smile to experience the mutual love of each other and the music at a trance event such as this. Enjoy these sets from last year while attendees of Luminosity Beach Festival 2017 make new memories this weekend.

While its nearly impossible to narrow down the sets that I love from Luminosity Beach Festival 2016, these five were definitely standouts for a variety of reasons.

Steve is incredible at weaving a tapestry out of your emotions and truly taking you on a journey from start to finish. Riddled with classics, memories, and amazing tracks, this set is a staple for the trance family. He is a genius producer and DJ. I have no concept of time when he is on the decks. It is one thing to play a set, but it is something completely different to captivate an entire crowd and take them on a journey of your genres history.

Facebook | SoundCloud

Orkidea is consistently in my top two of all time. The way he tells a story with tunes, beats, and magical sounds is unparalleled. He is the master in progressive trance. The intensity of his work is always felt behind every set. It builds and builds with perfection, with never a dull moment. I am constantly in search of his sets, listening to his releases, and praying that he comes to Los Angeles soon.

Facebook | SoundCloud

A true legend and incredible producer, Andy Moor never fails to disappoint, especially on the beach in The Netherlands. From the early 00s, his sound has been unique and captivating; its been an honor to be a part of the trance scene during his career. He is an instrumental master and a musical genius. This year at Lumi 2017 he is playing a producer set and it is one I highly recommend to not miss.

Facebook | SoundCloud

As a fan of Talla 2XLCs sound from the late 90s through today, naturally he is on my list of stand outs. The emotion, heart, and soul that bleed out through his tracks are second to none. He is a mainstay and living legend in the world of trance and has always been true to himself and a respectful, stand up gentleman. I have nothing but praise for this man and cherish the events where he is spinning.

Facebook | SoundCloud

This Hard Trance Classics special is a wonderful exploration of the subgenre. Indecent Noise is extremely talented at playing a variety of styles, but I have yet to witness one of his hard trance sets in person! There are so many classics tracks in here, and its packed full of emotion. This will get you up moving with its driving beats. It definitely exudes those old warehouse vibes of the early morning hours.

Shayna fell in love with electronic dance music in the early 2000s. Trance became the key to her soul, and the worldwide trancefamily gave her a sense of belonging she had not experienced before. She also enjoys deep house, breakbeat, and old school jungle/DnB. Having played piano and enjoyed singing from a young age, her main passion in life is music. When Shayna isnt dancing the night away, she works as a Tax Analyst for a global HCM corporation. Her other passions include Disney, animals, travelling, video gaming, and her rave family Strangers with Kandi. Events close to her heart are Dreamstate SoCal, Luminosity Beach Festival, and Nocturnal Wonderland. As she travels the world in search of the next event or festival, she loves to meet new people, spread the love through music, and make lifelong memories under the electric sky.

Artists you cannot miss at Luminosity Beach Festival – Trance Hub (satire) (press release) (blog)

LBF or rather lovingly Lumi is all set to celebrate its 10thyear anniversary with the festival starting on 22ndof June. With the biggest names from the world of Trance having performed over the years, heres a list of some of the most anticipated acts set to perform this year.

If you are still looking to buy ticketsTickets: http://www.luminosity-events.nl/tickets Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1819200368309000

Firstly, the headliners! We have ATB, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz and Paul Oakenfold taking over the mainstage spotlight from Thursday till Sunday. These superstars are no strangers here and we can surely expect some solid music blasting through, especially from Ferry Corsten having just released a supermassive album! These Trance mega giants absolutely never ever disappoint.

For the first time ever Pure NRG is all set to perform! Now, both Giuseppe and Rich have performed solo in the past, however this new duo live concept surely is a definite no-miss.

Talking about live acts, We have Roger Shah returning as Sunlounger. Now this isnt exactly Ibiza, but where theres sand, there Shah! The Balearic maestro will provide some excellent melodic contrast to the otherwise hardcore uplifting madness. Absolute relief!

Orkidea returns back this year too. Now when we talk about Trance, we talk about the roots, the future, whats right, whats wrong, and whats pure. The Finnish Trance legend dominates the pure genre and it should be safe to say we can expect a lot of new unreleased material too.

No summer beach festival could be complete without a little bit of Genix. The Anjunabeats star is all set to make this a very fun party. Genix set shouldnt be missed. No! not even going to the bar during this one!

Sied can be a Rielly funny guy, we know it. No were not talking about his Vodka Booth here (maybe its rielly going to happen), but hes also here to play. Now Id recommend getting destroyed first at the bar, and then at the floor. You wake up next day and dont remember a thing. Classic Sied Van Riel.

Talking about destroying dance floors, we have Jordan Suckley! If youre ready to get Damaged (not permanently of course), this Tech Trance legend is surely set to deliver something epic. Hes a Trance DJ that scratches (really), how many even exist?

And finally on the list are German legends, Kyau & Albert. Maybe I am biased here, but probably no other artist makes those stabby euphoric club anthems like Kyau & Albert. Oh! And those vocals. Bliss

While every artist in the lineup is exceptionally talented and that one should absolutely try not to miss any, this list consists of artists you CAN NOT MISS. Youll be banned if you do (and what will you tell your friends?).

Tested at Bliss, Bryan Kearney Premiers Uplifting All Over Again – Dance Music Northwest

Posted: at 5:22 am

Bliss: Transcendence came and went, but reflecting on it revives some fun memories. A few of the biggest names in trance took to the stage at Seattles WaMu Theater last month for a night of music, love, and unity. Among the performers: Irish trance maestro Bryan Kearney.

Known for his high-energy sets, Kearney slowed things down at one point during his Bliss performance, unleashing a score of vocal anthems. One of those?: An untitled collaboration with American singer-songwriter Plumb. Untitled no more, Kearney dropped the curtains on All Over Againlast week on Armin van Buurens A State of Trance radio show. Featuring Plumbs angelic vocals and Kearneys uplifting score, this emotional ballad of love and forgiveness will give you all the feels- just ask anyone who was there when he played it at Bliss. Take a listen!

This isnt the first time the two have worked together. Kearney remixed Plumbs smash hit Need You Now (How Many Times) back in 2014, turning a poppy love song into one of the years best uplifting trance anthems. All Over Again.a stunner of a sequel.

While it currently does not have an official release date, according to Kearneys Soundcloud, this song will be released this forthcoming summer.

What do you think about All Over Again? Let us know in the comments below!

Trance Dads who are absolutely killing it! – Trance Hub (satire) (press release) (blog)

Posted: June 19, 2017 at 7:24 pm

Fathers happen to influence most of our choices, may it be a sport or a game or even our choice of music. Today, since we celebrate Fathers Day, we list down 6 trance dads who are absolutely slaying the trance game.

James Lynas

The famous trance dad who is better known for taking out his lovely kids for rave rides. He is a man who even managed to get a Dreamstate party home for his kids! Talk about dads being positive influences in terms of music choices, and James is a shining example of one. You keep slaying it James!

Armin Van Buuren

The God of Trance not only steals hearts while on stage, but is an doting dad to Fenna and Remy. Who can forget the moment at Tomorrowland when he had tears in his eyes while announcing the birth of his son? He regularly takes time out to play with his kids and has even had Fenna dancing while he performs on stage!

Ferry Corsten

The man who never fails to impress, especially with his new album Blueprint, also happens to be the father of a beautiful girl and a boy. Sharing a personal story which he happened to tell me when I met him at EDC in India, I asked him as to how he manages his hectic schedule. He told us about how he had to be back in Asia in two days again for an event, yet he took a flight home right after his performance here to even spend those two days with his kids. Could it get any more adorable?

BT

BT is the proud father of a lovely girl. He currently resides with her in Maryland. He even produced the track Skylarking as a lullaby for his daughter. Apart from that, he gets her quite often on stage when he performs.

Marlo

Marlo recently stepped into fatherhood. Father to River Hoogstraten, you can always see him uploading pictures of his son on Instagram and snapchat.

Gareth Emery

Gareth emery is an absolute darling when it comes to his daughter Sansa. He even named her after Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones. He has even produced a track for her. Now, he currently is on his way to become a father for the second time. Congratulations Gaz!

These are some of the trance dads whom we absolutely love! To all the trance dads out there, wishing you a very happy Fathers day!

Trance enthusiast. Armada Ambassador. Content writer. Im not afraid of 138! Making people give Trance a chance.

What We Like || Uplifting Trance – EDM Identity (blog)

What We Like is a new series that features genres we like in the electronic music scene. This months edition is focused onUplifting Trance!

What We Likeseries focuses on a sole genre that a contributor to the team is passionate about. Each month, that contributor will dive deep into the genre they care most about to bring you some history, information, and of course some music too. Our intention is to not just to provide some music for you to listen to, but to guide you on your journey in discovering new music or help you develop a deeper connection to genres you already love. This monthsedition of What We Like is focused on Uplifting Trance!

What is Uplifting Trance? This sub-genre of Trance has many aliases, including ones like emotional trance, epic trance, and even branching off into a sub-genre of its own called orchestral uplifting trance. However, what truly defines Uplifting Trance is the feeling that it gives you when youre listening to it. The rush The euphoria The pure bliss that reaches your ears, brings a smile to your face, and spreads warmth into your heart.

Its the type of Trance that can have you bawling from sheer happiness caused by just being in that beautiful momentor crying from deep sadness reminiscing on beautifulmemories from the past. When listening to it in a live setting, its the type of music that makes you want to hug a friend or significant other and just appreciate that you are sharing something so beautiful with someone you care about. Uplifting Trance truly evokes emotion in so many different ways, and thats why it is, and always will be my favorite genre!

Trance is said to have originated in the mid to late 1990s in Germany. These type of sounds had to be defined because it was a different type of sound than what was currently being played in Europes club scene at the time. The difference was that there was typically a breakdown portion of the song where the beat dropped and focused on a melody and then returned with a renewed intensity. It became instantly popular in Europe and spread very quickly.

It wasnt until the late 1990s and early 2000s that the more uplifting side of Trance started to show itself with artists like ATB, Delirium, Paul Van Dyk, and Ferry Corsten. Other artists such as Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, 4 Strings, and Above & Beyond to name a few were also involved in the progression of Uplifting Trance in the 2000s.

In recent years, this sub-genre of Trance has continued to carry on with artists such as Aly & Fila, John O Callaghan, Ferry Tayle, Daniel Kandi, and more. It has also branched off creating its very own Uplifting Trance subgenre mentioned above, orchestral uplifting.

There are many tracks that can be labeled as Uplifting Trance. Therefore, Ive simply picked out some of my favorite tracks, artists, labels, and radio shows that will help you get an example of what this Trance subgenre really is and why its so awesome!

If you are an avid electronic music fan, youve most likely heard of Digitally Imported radio. Did you know they have an entire channel dedicated to Uplifting / Epic Trance? [Listen] Com Truise New Trance Groove is Smooth – Mix 247 EDM

Posted: June 16, 2017 at 3:28 pm

Com Truise just released his fifth album on Friday the 16th. The album, titled Iteration, marks his first album since 2014s 7 song EP Wave 1. It has definitely been worth the wait. In an era where its more about what producer is putting out the biggest anthem, its nice to see an artist embrace trance and give us the smooth, grooving album we deserve.

With Iteration, Com Truise is giving us electronic music we can sit to. But more than that. The warm beats and flowing music dont lack energy and are conducive to productivity. With a title derived from a word that means the repetition of a process of utterance, we can tell its going to be good getting-stuff-done music.

Thats looking at Iteration more practically, though. Theres more to the album than a process. Theres also feeling, emotion. Each song tells a story as the melody moves forward, constantly shifting. The music is intimate and sensual, something you could listen to with a special someone when the mood is right.

This album is a blend of many things, and Com Truise blends them well. Each song compliments the next, with none of them trying to stand above the others. That said, I have a particular fondness for Propogation and Iteration. Those tracks each have a story to tell and they swell from slower and quiet to having more of a driving beat and many layers of music.

Personally, Com Truise might be my new go-to artist when I want something chill to put on or want some music to help me through cleaning the house. With each iteration of Iteration, there always seems to be something new to hear. The way each song is a story, I can see some of his music used in movies. In fact, I would not be surprised to see him approached to compose a movie score sometime soon.

Trance Over The Years at EDC Las Vegas | EDM Identity – EDM Identity (blog)

Posted: June 15, 2017 at 9:20 pm

From circuitGROUNDS to quantumVALLEY, trance has always had a special place at Electric Daisy Carnival

Over the years,Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas has played home to almost every genre of dance music. Of all the sounds that have graced the EDC Las Vegas stages, there is one that has taken us on quite the exhilarating and momentous rollercoaster ride: trance. Though there have been many ups and downs, as the winds of popularity and demand are continuously changing, trance has been rebirthed from the ashes to take its rightful place, staking its claim as one of the most sought after genres at one of the biggest dance events on the planet.

Is trance dead? If we take a look at its history over the years at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, I can firmly tell you that that trance isnt going anywhere. In fact, it is now bigger than it has ever been before!

In 2011, EDC Las Vegas hosted artists such asCosmic Gate, Above & Beyond, Paul Oakenfold, John OCallaghan, Markus Schulz, Simon Patterson, Sean Tyas, Ferry Corsten, and ATB.They took trance fans on a journey of ethereal beats solidifying the genre as one that simply refused to die. Reminding the dance universe that trance was a genre unlike any other, these DJs took listeners on a true musical journey of melodic beats and emotion filled rhythms. It was in these moments that a movement would be sparked in the souls of many as 2011 was the first year EDC was hosted in Las Vegas.

In 2012, history would be made as both A State Of Trance and Group Therapy would take over the circuitGROUNDS stage for a full weekend of pure unadulterated trance insanity. With the trance family representing in full force, the electricity in the air resounded louder at circuitGROUNDS than at any other stage that whole weekend.

A freak sandstorm put a hold in the festivities on night two except for a small art car in the middle of the speedway. Who stuck around to make sure that the music would live on? None other than Coldharbour King, Markus Schulz, whokept the music goingwith an impromptu performance that sparked life back into a disastrous situation.

Although the trance greats like Bryan Kearney, ATB, Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, and Ferry Corsten were on the ticket, what was happening to our beloved trance scene at EDC Las Vegas? The trance family was left confused and disappointed to say the least. How could a genre that touches so deeply be ignored or forgotten? The mainstage sound was quickly changing into big room house and the lineup reflected this greatly.

EDC Las Vegas 2014 Mainstage Photo Credit: Insomniac Events

The following year, 2014, proved to be slightly better but still lacked the type of trance lineup from years before. Trance artists were experimenting with the mainstage sounds, such as Ferry Corsten and Markus Schulz partnering to form New World Punx. With passion in tow and a voice that would not be ignored, the trance family would come together to shout their disappointment with the lack of trance presence.

In true Pasquale Rotella fashion, he answered back letting headliners know that in 2015 trance would have a full day dedicated to some of the most celebrated names in trance. This would be the beginning of a beautiful resurgence of trance at EDC.

Dreamstatewas announced as a 2-day trance extravaganza that would take place at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California on Thanksgiving Day weekend. Since the announcement of the Dreamstate event, the trance presence at EDC Las Vegas would forever be changed as 2016 played host to a brand new circuitGROUNDS design. Dreamstate took over the massive 360 entity for one wild celebration on day three, which marked a beautiful uprising for the trance genre.

With Ben Nicky kicking off the trance extravaganza, Sunday would be the night that the trance family would come together as one. People came together linking their spirits together to celebrate a genre that gloriously beat out all of the odds that once seemed to be on its last heartbeat.

This year Pasquale announced Dreamstate would expand even further for Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas. The biggest and best trance artists from all over the globe will take over the airwaves for three, yes THREE full days, at a brand new dedicated stage called quantumVALLEY hosted by Dreamstate! As history has shown us, we are continually blessed with bigger and better stages and lineups. With quantumVALLEY designed specifically for our beloved trance family, this will be the year that trance will be properly represented at Electric Daisy Carnival.

When were coming up with new ideas and experiences, we draw inspiration from all different places including from within our amazing community. Our newest stage at EDC Las Vegas this year exists because of the energy, passion and love many of you have for the trance sound and culture. After a late night of planning and perfecting, the team and I are finally ready to officially debut our newest addition to the EDCLV family of stages: quantumVALLEY. A few of you spotted some designs last week on my Insta but I wanted to make it official. Dreamstate will be hosting all 3 nights Under the Electric Sky.

Pasquale Rotella

Leven Kali’s Sensual Slow Jam Will Leave You In A Trance – The FADER

Posted: at 9:20 pm

Leven Kali is a Santa Monica singer, songwriter, and producer who recently featured on Playboi Carti's eponymous debut tape and is credited as a contributor on Drake's More Life. On his new song "Yours," he proclaims his admiration and loyalty to a mystery woman. "You say that you love me more/ I think you know what's good/ I'm here, I'm yours," he sings in a deep and raspy timbre. Two minutes into the sultry song, Kali takes on the rapping role: "I ain't got no plans/ Got no shit today/ We can take our time, babe." The synths undulate and introduce a darker and mysterious bass line that complements his nonchalant, sing-songy flow.

"'Yours' is a jam I made last week when the weather was kinda shitty in L.A. June gloom," Leven Kali told The FADER over email. "I just stayed in at the crib and cooked up. The homie ISM came through and sprinkled some sauce on it too."

Listen to "Yours" below.

Trance hits which turn 20 in 2017 – Trance Hub (satire) (press release) (blog)

Posted: June 14, 2017 at 4:24 am

Trance music came into existence in the early 1990s in Germany & Goa. Since then genre has been a musical therapy for millions of listeners. They say Trance heals and some tracks are accurate representation of that thought. Hence it makes perfect sense to take a trip down memory lane and talk about a time which was golden and unadulterated.

Team Trance Hub has listed down a few tracks which turn 20 in 2017, classics which have cemented their legacy in the sands of time.

A track which literally starts with the wordsLets go to the beach cannot be missed. With a peppy bass line the track also has the ability to make you fly. A definite classic which still brings a smile on your face.

Perhaps the prime example of progressive trance, Flaming June sees two absolute legends combine. The track name is no way connected to the famous 1895 painting but according to Brian, he got the name courtesy a cab driver who termed the weather as Flaming June

Produced by Paul Oakenfold & Steve Osborne, the track is of real beauty as it has the melodious vocal of Dominique Atkins. With lyrics that speak about heartbreak, this song had a huge debut on the UK charts. Noteworthy mention to the fast paced Ascension remix as well.

A 21 year old young boy from Netherlands took over the world with a storm by producing a tune that laid the foundation of his legacy. 20 years later Armin has leapfrogged everyone and become number 1, but pretty sure after countless hits Blue Fear will always remain close to his heart as it kick-started his career.

Pacific Melody was the reason for Johan Gielen to change his groups name from Body Heat to Airscape. This 1997 tune with Peter Ramson reached the UK top 50 charts. With a lot of highs and lows the tune is a wonderful listening experience.

If you are sucker for vocal trance, this is definitely one tune you should not miss. This is one of the most iconic tunes from the house of British producers Ricky Simmons & Steve Jones. With a slightly eerie background the vocals of Kate Cameron give the tune a perfect emotive feeling.

This aint our normal trance tune, but something different. Since the start Nick loved experimenting with new sounds, and Sunstroke is a beautiful example. With a laidback vibe & a sample of an angelic voice, this downtempo tune is perfect lullaby for trance listeners.

Spice of life, is one tune which flirts nicely with two high paced genres of dance music. Citadel of Kaoss have always had a lot of techno & breakbeat influence in all their songs. But for this classic, it was slightly different, as this build up from a tech trance sound to a slightly more psychedelic one.

Robotic samples echoing the words Freak Tonight, Alien Factory were so much in love with their creation that they created three different styled mixes for this. But one thing which remains common through all the mixes is the wonderful use of synth.

Curator of Edm4Pune, sports enthusiast assisted by having a taste bud for delicious food. Open to all genres of music yet staying close to his first love, Trance.

The Spinoff’s Worst Jobs Ever: fish oil, shoplifting, trenches, and trance – The Spinoff

Posted: June 12, 2017 at 8:18 pm

To finally get to our dream jobs at The Spinoff, our staff have been through some pretty shitty employment.

From flagrant sexism to gagging on fur balls from beard clippings, we at The Spinoff were exploited and used by our former employers.

But now you dont have to suffer the indignity that we endured, because this June, skate, surf, and snowboard clothing company Volcom is giving 15 people from around the world the chance to make their passion their profession. The prize is a trip to Austin, Texas to work on your dream job and $5000 cash; thats $5000 more than The Spinoffs Don Rowe got paid for his summer job. Enter the competition today so you dont have to spend two months stripping half the Waikatos wallpaper for no pay, or nine hours every day unpacking boxes in a freezing windowless room.

In the summer break of my first year at Auckland Uni, I got my first full-time job, working at an ice cream factory. From 7am to 4pm, my task was to unbox and sort whatever had been delivered to the factory floor. Deliveries were either plastic containers, plastic lids, 10kg bags of hokey pokey and crushed cookies, or 20L sacks of flavoured syrups that served as great weight training. It was a beautiful summer (apparently) but the room I worked in was windowless and had to be kept chilled because the ice cream was being made next door. It was always a fun surprise finding out what the weather had been like that day as I left to go home. Sometimes Id be called into the packing room to put boxes together or to stand at the conveyor belt and make sure that thousands of ice cream tubs didnt clog up the shrink-wrap machine. It was the definition of mindless work but also very stressful because you couldnt stop for a second until the machines stopped. The machines were loud so everyone wore ear muffs but werent allowed to listen to music in case of an alarm. I did a lot of self-reflection and got very pale that summer. But now Im very good at taping and untaping cardboard boxes so it wasnt all bad.

My first job was at a small hairdressing place: washing, sweeping and generally being around hair for $8 an hour, three hours every Saturday morning. The people who worked there were lovely, but the big problem was dealing with all the goddamn hair. Sartre was wrong: hell isnt other people, its other peoples hair. I would frequently, silently dry retch over the basins when washing out perm solution. I pulled endless globs of rancid hair from the drains like a horror film. I inhaled so many beard trimmings I wont be surprised if I have a gerbil-sized hairball wedged in my lungs forever. The sinks were shoddy and would frequently leak down peoples necks, so I once had to blow-dry an elderly womans back for about half an hour, dry-retching all the way. Still, cant put a price on 24 bucks.

I once had an interview for a job with a lady who said to me, I know Im not supposed to ask you this, but when are you planning on getting pregnant? Because I dont want someone whos going to go on maternity leave anytime soon. Clearly there were alarm bells from the start, but I was in London and needed to pay my excruciatingly high rent so I took the job. Cool move. Another highlight was the day she told me that I needed to remove the nail polish from my nails as it had chipped slightly and we were meeting with some of the company bosses. She literally handed me the nail polish remover and stood there and watched me take it off. When we went into the meeting the bosses were wearing jeans, t-shirts and Crocs.

About six months before I started at The Spinoff I spent several weeks drainlaying through a period of intense thunderstorms. One afternoon, shin-deep in clay mud like something out of Flanders Fields, I watched the foreman and his pneumonia get into their truck and drive away, lightning streaking above the retirement village we were building. That was the second worst job Ive had. Far, far more hazardous to both mood and health were the two months I spent painting the most rundown state houses in the governments Waikato portfolio. From Ngaruawahia to Forest Lake, Huntly to Hamilton, we scraped half a century worth of ciggy-stained wallpaper from sagging walls, sanded the space behind the fridge and generally got stuck into the residences of people who just didnt give a shit anymore, and hadnt for the past twenty years. Then, at the end of the contract, we got screwed by the contractor and ended up with a total of $0 for our time, thank you very much, just in time for Christmas. Happy days.

My first proper job was stacking shelves at 277 Woolworths at night. I was 17, living on K Road and making a minimum of $120 a week, $80 of which covered my rent. It was lonely, repetitive and depressing. In the break room there were Polaroid photos of the shoplifters holding what they got caught with. Their names were scrawled at the bottom in vivid. Mostly high school kids with cans of V and pensioners with cat food or cheap cuts of steak. I wondered why they didnt steal nicer meat. A shoplifting friend of mine told me you get the same punishment for shoplifting anything up to $500. Someone should tell these old men, I thought. The photos were beautiful and sad in a way that appealed to me.

I listened to my Walkman the whole time. When they told me I couldnt listen to my Walkman anymore I quit the next day and called in sick for the next two weeks. The boss threatened to withhold my last pay cheque if I never came back, so I worked my last shift, listening to my friends bFM show on my Walkman. He played a song for me: The Dead Kennedys Take This Job And Shove It.

The lonely supermarket aisle where Walkmans are banned and hope is out of stock.

My first job was at the fish bar at Woolworths. I was 15. My hands used to get cut up cleaning the fish machine and the fish oil would get into my hands. I was 15 and I smelled like fish all the time. It was not a good time. I hate fish.

I also worked at the Bunny Bar where I had to dress up as a bunny. But the bar got sued by Playboy and was shut down. Fish Bar was still worse than the Bunny Bar.

My first job was working in a Kiwifruit grading shed during harvest time. It was fine, but I was so useless at it they kept on moving me around different jobs. I was a box packer one day, but was so slow kiwifruit piled up around me like discarded peanut shells on the floor of a bar. I got moved to grading which required watching scores of kiwifruit go past on the conveyor belt and picking out the non-export grade fruit (basically the fruit that looked bung), but I let so many scarred and degenerate fruit through they moved me again. And so on and so on.

And then the kiwifruit market imploded and I never had to work in a kiwifruit orchard ever again.

Jos Barbosa has been linked to the collapse of the kiwifruit market.

I scored my worst job when I moved to Melbourne for the summer holidays and was desperately broke and in need of work quickly. I found myself selling energy plans door to door for one of the large Australian electricity providers. After three days of unpaid training, on the morning of my first day we gathered in the main office in the central city where loud trance music was used to motivate the sellers who charged around the room hi fiving and shouting. It was very cultish. Each team would then jump in a van and head to the citys outer suburbs motivational trance loud on the stereo again. It was then my job to go out into the neighbourhood and manipulate struggling, and often confused, families to switch energy providers by gently implying if they didnt, their power would be cut off. That was my first and last day as an energy salesman.

For five terrifying hours when I was 17 I worked as a potato picker about an hour south of Auckland. I wanted to get money for a PS4. I was put into a combine harvester with four strangers while we went around a field for five hours. I have the softest hands of any person I know, and I did not cope. I ended up calling my mother to come and pick me up that afternoon.
