Omnia, Speaking About His Future, Says Right Now, Trance is Back. – Dance Music Northwest

Posted: June 30, 2017 at 12:25 am

Is trance music dead? Once atopicfor discussion, 2016 saw that question finally laid to rest. Trance artists sawincreased bookings, large dedicatedtrance events like Blissin Seattle sprouted out of nowhere, psy-trance became a fad, and more! This year, the genre continues to soar to new heights.Fresh, youngartists are emerging and legends of old, ones who bounced to other genres, have returned home under new aliases. One trance mainstay whos set to have his biggest year yet? Omnia.

Before taking to the Digital Oasis stage last week at Paradiso, the Ukranian DJ/producer shared with us what fans can expect from him this summer, and beyond. Lets just say: trance family, you are definitely in for a treat!

Dont expect from me simple EDM, commercial big room stuff, DJ screaming in the microphone for the whole night, and things like thatits not me.

Contributing to trances resurgence last year, Omnia struck gold with Alien, released that April, and kept the hits coming. His remix of Armin van Buurens Face of Summer, Believe (featuring famed trance vocalist Audrey Gallagher) and All I See Is You (featuring Christian Burns, a legend in his own right), all released toward the end of the year, received massive support and placed on trance charts across the globe. He hasnt stopped since, teaming up with Johnny Rose for Why Do You Run and DRYM for Enigma to kick off 2017.

His Paradiso set saw a slew of new IDs and remixes, somehaving never been played on stage- a funtaste of whats to come.

The whole summer is going to be crazy with the new music from me and Im so happy about that!

Teasing a few more singles to be released in July and August, Omnia adds there are plans for an album to be released next year; in-progress now.

I think we are coming back to the trance roots right now. For some reasons trance music had too much EDM influences afew years ago, but that was just a trend I guess; people get bored of this too fast.

Right now, trance is back.

Happy days as Boks wake up from a trance – Citizen

Posted: June 29, 2017 at 11:25 am

It was a crystal clear indication that he was mulling things over before talking about the history which had been unrolled before him in the 35-12 Springbok victory over the Tricolores.

Well, he eventually said, that was truly worth watching. And though I have mentioned on several occasions in the past that I would never have the temerity to claim any expertise as a rugby pundit, it does strike me that the difference between this seasons Springboks and the disjointed team which turned out last year is astounding.

The nods from the usual suspects who go to make up the company which habitually assembles to watch sport over the weekends, showed graphically that they were in full agreement with the Silent One.

It is almost as if some enchanted being had suddenly arrived and awoken them from a deep sleep. And while it would be stretching the bounds of credulity to draw the comparison with Sleeping Beauty, for it strikes me that several players are lucky they can play rugby because they certainly are not pretty. It all seems to be working swimmingly for the Boks.

At this juncture it must be said that the oblique reference to the classic tale by the Brothers Grimm went straight past theArithmetically-challenged Golfer, a self-styled expert who tends to take himself far too seriously. But he did pick up on the dearth of film star looks in the Bok side.

Ill give you that Eben Etzebeth is not exactly an oil painting, but what do you want a Springbok forward to look like? Brad Pitt?

You also miss the point that his job is to help fire up the motor in the South African scrum, not pose for pictures. It was a point the Silent One was more than willing to concede, but couldnt resist adding a rider to.

I am sorry if I said anything to upset you over your favourite player. This was not my intention at all. I think though that the Boks seem to have a new purpose and a more concentrated direction. It is almost as if they have collectively shaken their heads and awoken to what it is they are doing out in the middle.

There are very few sides who could lose a captain like Warren Whiteley on the very eve of a Test match and throw Etzebeth in at the deep end as a replacement skipper, reshuffle the scrum to include a debutant, start with a stand-by scrumhalf and still come up with the goods. It truly points to a team who are confident in what they do and play together as a disciplined unit.

That opening of the conscious about what it means to operate as a team and play for one another rather than as a bunch of directionless individuals, strikes me as being the prime factor. In this summation, the Silent One showed that his understanding of the game of rugby football was perhaps far deeper than he owned up to.

Now, he said, if the South African cricket side are able to embrace this aspect, I am sure they would do far better. It is now a matter of record that this passed the Proteas by in their T20 against England in Cardiff, losing by 19 runs for yet another flop in the shortest form of the game.

Not surprisingly perhaps, the Silent One had heeded his own warnings and had not arrived to watch.

Markus Schulz Slayed Unicorns at 45 East in Portland (Review) – Dance Music Northwest

Posted: June 28, 2017 at 6:26 am

The man, the legend, the unicorn slayer came, and slayed. Portland was lucky enough to have Markus Schulz pay them a visit, and it was a beautiful night of trance. Red Cube and Play Saturdays presented Markus Schulz this June, with opener local Jamie Meushaw. We recently had the opportunity to talk to Markus Schulz, and the way he talked about his music got us excited to see the work in action.

As always, 45 East was on their A game when it came to getting everyone in and keeping people safe. It was easy to get drinks, water and get around the venue. A good staff definitely makes nights going out easier.

Jamie Meushaw kicked off the night bringing us into a state of trance as the only opener for Markus Schulz. The vibes were perfect that night. As we walked in there were shuffling circles, and welcoming energy. The encouragement that we saw through out the dance floor started up front with Markus and Jamie.

Markus Schulz has been in the music industry for many years, he and knows his audience. His set took us on a journey. He was like a music conductor on the decks, conducting the crowd. Like any show you go to people become invested in the producer and their music, we had seen that before, but nothing quite like he did. Peoples bodies and minds were invested in his music. One attendee went as far as to say, trance saves lives.

Throughout the night he dropped many tracks, and our favorite being his new track, Running Up That Hill. A number of times he asked how the Portland Trance Family was doing? This only highlighted the bond people share in the trance community. The love and connection with producer, trance and the crowd was crazy to see. If you have not experienced a trance show, we highly suggest it. There was much love through out the venue. With a smaller venue we were spoiled with a more intimate performance, compared to EDC or Paradiso, but the production was just as good.

Shout out to all the shufflers that night, you all killed it! Showing off their skills but also sharing tips to onlookers. We learned that the idea of the trance community is still here, and that music has the power to take over a room, and capture a group of people.

Though trance is not the biggest genre played in Portland, when Markus Schulz comes to Portland, trance fans come out. If you did not have the opportunity to see Markus Schulz this time around, make sure to see him the next time he is on the West Coast, or if you have the chance, travel and see his Dakota show!

Driftmoon talks India with Trancehub! – Trance Hub (satire) (press release) (blog)

Posted: June 25, 2017 at 2:20 pm

If asked to define Driftmoon, one can say Driftmoon is heart and mind combined into perfect harmony. Juraj Klicka, better known as the face of Driftmoon defines modern trance for all. It is pure, melodic, orchestral and puts the listener in a state of tranquil. So far every track by Driftmoon (including Drifter, Exodus, Leviticus, Howl At The Moon, Cama) have rocked planet trance and been supported by Armin Van Buuren on ASOT, earning Future Favourite and Tune Of The Week status on more than one occasion. Not only the king of trance but Aly & Fila, Markus Schulz, W&W, Solarstone, Jorn Van Deynhoven, Max Graham and the best of the rest are now hooked on Driftmoons phenomenal sounds.

The man flies down to India next week for a two city tour. Before he comes here, we sit down with him for a short Q&A about his expectations from here, his upcoming work and many other things!

Hi Juraj its lovely to finally have you perform in India! How does it feel like to finally come here?

Hi! Thank you for having me there and thank you for this interview. India has been in my sight for years even before I started making music. Its a beautiful country with rich cultural and historical heritage so its the place I want to visit of course, absolutely cant wait to breathe some of the history personally next week!

Have you planned to visit any places or looking forward to eating here?

India is a huge place and I would love to travel it all by train, which is what my sister did few years ago when she was traveling and backpacking there, I loved the photos ! It looks gorgeous. Also Indian cusine is one of my most beloved ones so of course, I will eat as much as I can there!

Driftmoon was a two-member project, which started off with you and Mikka. How did it all begin?

Driftmoon was originally a two member project made up of David Sherlock (owner of Freshly Squeezed Samples) and Miikka Leinonen, I joined the projects when they had difficulties finishing any of the tracks, they had great ideas (such as Drifter, Luminance, Howl At The Moon,) but they lacked technical skills to make the ideas into records, thats where I stepped in. David soon left to focus purely on FSS and Miikka left the project last year when he wanted to pursue a different path. I am fully dedicated to the project and Ive invested everything into making it a success.

How did you decide to name your project Driftmoon?

Originally we had huge problems with naming the project, we wrote down all our ideas on single document and then we were checking online which were available, Driftmoon was the last left and we went with it, eventually by the time we released a first track we found out that there is an indie game called Driftmoon as well, funny coincidence!

How did you start producing music? What inspires what you produce? Any specific place, person or an artist?

I started producing music when I was 15 but I didnt really get into it before I was 22, I went to study music and composition in UK and USA. By that time I already knew that I want to make and compose music full time for living.

Central Europe is a hotbed for trance producers at the moment, the change has come about in the last few years. What really led to this?

I think its a matter of geopolitical circumstances, situation in Europe allows young people to explore different aspects of life as well and it can lead many teenagers and adults to pursue career paths they wouldnt be normally allowed to.

Any artist you would like to collaborate with? Or you would like to play a B2B set with?

I take huge pride in my music and there arent many people I would love to collaborate with, I think only few (and classical) composers come to mind, no one from trance scene, sorry!

You happen to be a huge fan of tattoos. Which one is your most favorite one and why? Any meaning behind it?

I am huge fan of tattoos and the pain because even if you believe it or not, it cleans my mind because you have to be there and simply take it. It calms my mind down and I can focus more on important stuff. There are many I like but their meaning will be hidden, sorry!

You recently met Grammy nominated Cellist Tina Guo. Is there a collaboration on the cards? Could you tell us a little more about it?

I worked with her on my album already, she is an amazing person! I cant reveal anything for the future, yet

You have had fairly great relations with United Music Transmission, how did they start?

United Music Events are based in Prague even despite the owners are Dutch, they needed help with their show few years ago and one of the owners contacted me, now I am working full time on the show each year, another happy coincidence!

Any message for the Indian fans who are excited to see you in India?

I absolutely cannot wait to see all of you in India! It will be an amazing party, I promise you that.

Trance encounter – Camden New Journal newspapers website

Posted: June 24, 2017 at 2:25 pm

Dr John Elliotson

TODAYS celebrity doctors have nothing on the theatricality of Victorian professor John Elliotson, who hypnotised patients and brought acclaim and derision in equal measure to University College Hospital.

Elliotson, who taught Charles Dickens to put people in a trance, features in a fascinating new book, The Mesmerist, by Wendy Moore.

The doctor was convinced that many illnesses were all in the mind and could be cured by auto suggestion.

Whats more, he was prepared to offer his alternative treatments free to the desperate and destitute residents of Camden Town, Somers Town and St Pancras. As part of her research for the book, Wendy underwent hypnosis.

Id been suffering from headaches, she said. I was fairly sceptical but I thought Id give it a go. I visited a hypnotherapist who was also a doctor. And do you know what? It really helped me. I felt more relaxed and Ive had fewer headaches since. Ive also learnt to hypnotise myself, which helps when I do get an ache.

Her book is a detailed biography of Elliotson (1791-1868) whose place in medical history had almost been forgotten. Wendy, a former Ham & High journalist, describes early experiments with hypnotism in Victorian times called mesmerism a so-called cure for many illnesses including epilepsy.

Elliotson was criticised by some colleagues for his belief in the therapy, although today he has probably been vindicated.

Hypnotherapy, though not officially sanctioned by the NHS, is now a popular mainstream alternative to conventional medicine and boasts some success in healing a range of conditions.

Elliotson was supported, at least in the early days, by a new campaigning medical magazine called The Lancet. It was edited by Thomas Wakley, who was to become a radical independent MP for Finsbury.

They were to fall out later when Wakley joined the growing band of critics of Elliotson.

Wendy Moore

Mesmerism was named after a German physician, Franz Anton Mesmer, who was also disillusioned with conventional therapies.

He had stumbled across a method of inducing a sleep-like trance through repetitive motions and suggestions.

The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley was mesmerised several times in an effort to quell painful kidney stones and wrote a poem about it.

Elliotson became so obsessed that he even used mesmerism on his pet parrot. After a few strokes on its back the bird obediently fell asleep on its perch, writes Wendy.

But his main subjects were two teenage sisters Elizabeth Okey, 17, and her sibling Jane, 15, who both apparently suffered from epilepsy. Their parents had taken them to UCH in a desperate attempt to find a cure. Elizabeth was suffering a fit every day, followed by a severe headache, and was no longer able to work as a housemaid.

Under hypnosis Elizabeth fell into a trance and began to perform strange antics, watched by hundreds of medical students and others interested in the subject. She talked, opened her eyes and behaved in an uninhibited way. Her personality completely changed. Normally shy and demure, Elizabeth flirted and joked and appeared not to feel electric shocks.

Charles Dickens, who lived in nearby Doughty Street, was a regular visitor to the hospital and was friends with Elliotson, who became the novelists family doctor.

Dickens not only believed that hypnotism worked but would practise with noted success on his wife, sister-in-law and several friends, although he would always resist becoming a subject himself, writes Wendy.

While not everyone agreed with Elliotsons medical theories, nobody could deny his determination to establish a new hospital for the poor. In 1834 he helped found the North London hospital with 130 beds. Three years later it was renamed the UCH.

Soon to be Queen, Princess Victoria was among those who contributed to a fund organised by Elliotson to build the new hospital. Ragged and filthy, ill-shod and barefoot, the inhabitants of north London flocked to the hospitals doors, writes Wendy. Many of them were starving and destitute; all were poor and sick.

Talking about why she chose the subject, Wendy said: I was fascinated by the story of the two teenage girls, the Okey sisters, who became Elliotsons prize patients and performed bizarre antics under mesmerism in the lecture theatre at UCH. I was intrigued as to whether they were fakes or genuine. Were they clever actors who enjoyed being teenage celebrities just like young contestants on the X Factor today or really acting under the influence of hypnotism?

The Mesmerist (The Society Doctor who held Victorian London Spellbound). By Wendy Moore, Orion, 18.99

Aston Manor Going Full Trance With Gabriel & Dresden and Bryan Kearney – Dance Music Northwest

Posted: at 6:27 am

Aston Manor, located in Seattles SoDo district, isnt known as a trance music destination. But that might soon change. After Andrew Rayel took his on-going Moments tour to Roy Astons social club earlier this month, team Aston and Stardust Events one-upped themselves with a double booking that has the Seattle Trance Family jumping with joy. Mark your calendars because on Thursday October 5th, Gabriel & Dresden and Bryan Kearney are taking over the Manor.

Kearney makes his Seattle return following an energizing performance at Bliss: Transcendence last month. The Irish trance powerhouse has been tearing up stages across the world with psy-heavy sets. However, his latest single, All Over Again, sees Kearney going back to his uplifting roots, teaming up with singer-songwriter Plumb to deliver an emotional ballad that will give you all the feels. One of the best in the scene today, Kearney alone is enough to get us excited. Throw in Gabriel & Dresden? What?!

Gabriel & Dresden are considered legends in the trance game, teaming up together back in 2001 for seven years before re-uniting in 2011. While Kearney is more up-tempo, these two are the opposite- opting for chillout, uplifting vibes. In addition to songs of their own, G & D have remixed the likes of trance Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, Above & Beyond and more. At one point, the two joined JES, a renowned trance vocalist, to form the group Motorcycle best known for its hit As The Rush Comes. Together, the two are a force. Separate? Just as amazing. Gabriels Andain side project scored an all-time trance classic with Beautiful Things; Dresden matching that with remixes that ranked high on the Billboard Hot Dance and Club Play charts. Prepare to go back in time when the two take the stage.

Tickets go on sale next Thursday at noon. Will you be joining us for a night of beautiful trance under the Aston Manor chandeliers?
