TeamLab and TikTok team up for immersive sauna exhibition in Tokyo – The Japan Times

Posted: March 25, 2021 at 3:05 am

Its the hottest new exhibition in town: an immersive digital art experience filled with futuristic light installations that doubles up as a sauna complex.

The sweaty but spectacular art show in Tokyo, which opened Monday, allows visitors to experience art in their finest mental state.

People must wear swimsuits but can put indoor clothing on top to enter the exhibition, which contains seven saunas of various temperatures lit up atmospherically in bold colors from magenta to deep green.

After a few minutes relaxing in the heat followed by a cold shower to pique the senses they can wander through different rooms to marvel at the artworks in a sauna trance.

Exhibits include fluttering butterfly illuminations, solidified light crystals, and a large red sphere that radiates through the darkness.

Some of the viewing spaces also feature streams of cold water or cooling mist to create a physical, as well as esoteric, impression.

The exhibition, called Reconnect: Art with Rinkan Sauna, is the latest offering from the Japanese art collective teamLab, which collaborated with video app TikTok on the project.

Internationally renowned for their innovative digital art, teamLabs work combines projections, sound and carefully designed spaces to create otherworldly experiences.

By taking alternating hot and cold baths, visitors open their minds, experience an ever-expanding physical sensation and become one with the art, the group said.

But an instruction sheet provided at a preview event acknowledged that for some visitors, it could all get too much warning them not to overdo it in the sauna rooms and to make sure to drink water frequently.

Increasing the sweat factor, visitors are also required to wear a mask inside the exhibition, which will run until August 31.

At the new teamLab and TikTok exhibition, visitors can enjoy the steam of a sauna, before enjoying the art in a sauna trance. | AFP-JIJI

We’re Getting Through This: Dopapod Returns To The Stage For First Night At The Ardmore [Photos/Full Video] – Live for Live Music

Posted: at 3:05 am

Dopapod opened a two-night run at the Ardmore Music Hall on Friday night, marking their first show in front of a live audience since March 7th, 2020 at the now-shuttered Rex Theater in Pittsburgh, PA. Presented in partnership with Live For Live Music, the two-night run, live-streamed run was billed as Were Gonna Get Through This. Now, over a year since the pandemic began, its finally starting to feel like we can adopt that phrase in the present tenseor even the past tense. While we may not be quite there yet, these showsalready rescheduled once due to the early winter COVID spikeare perhaps indicative of a larger-scale recovery for the concert industry.

As Keyboardist Eli Winderman explained of the shows when they were initially announced, We didnt know the next time we would see each other again back in March when we had to abruptly leave tour and head home. We thought it was going to be just a few months and wed be back to normal. Obviously, that didnt happen but now here we are announcing our first shows since the start of the pandemic and to say were excited is an extreme understatement. We wanted to call the event Were gonna get through this because we want to help all our fans stay positive and optimistic to get through the rest of this time where we cant play shows like we used to. All things must pass as will this pandemic!

The past year has been a story of widespread suffering sprinkled with silver linings and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. This show fell under the latter category. Tickets for this Ardmore run were not sold in the conventional sense; instead, Dopapod offered fans the chance to win a pair of Golden Tickets through raffles and silent auctions. Accustomed to hosting capacity crowds of 600 during normal times, only twenty (!) fans attended Friday nights show in person, seated in pairs at high-top tables, five each on the main floor and upper balcony. With perfect sight lines, dialed-in PA sound, and plenty of room to dance. When Dopapod took the stage to emphatically punctuate their involuntary 377-day live-performance break, every single one of us felt every ounce of our privilege, making Were Gonna Get Through This the understatement of the year for those who attended in person. For those not physically in the room, the livestream and Zoom dance partyprojected on a screen at front of house for the band to seeoffered a tangible connection from afar. Guitarist Rob Compas mom even made an appearance, to the audible pleasure of both the band and the tiny audience.

Every Dopapod show is a palindromic journey in a microcosmic sense, and that notion rang true last night. Releasing a years worth of pent-up energy and musical rage, Dopapod metaphorically marked their new beginning in signature fashion with a deliberate synth-driven build that would soon find liftoff in the frenzied peak of Bats in the Cave. As Eli Winderman continued to drive the band and dazzle on keyboards, Like a Ball ushered in guitarist Rob Compas first vocals of the evening. The rhythm section of Chuck Jones (bass) and Neal Fro Evans (drums) had the small but effusive crowd bumping along with the beautiful stage-right harmonies of Turn By Turn before segueing into the rave-like feels of Freight Train. Hard rocker Nuggy Jawson closed the hour-long set, Compas face-melting guitar fluidly layering with the liquid trance of Windermans synth.

Indian Grits opened the second set with a decidedly different feel, one that would have felt equally at home in the funk-driven confines of New Orleans Tipitinas as the first set would have in at underground dance party. The groovy bass and drums of Mucho kept the funk alive even as Windermans synth found space in ambient trance before Neal Fro Evans heavy bass drum woke the music up and brought the party back to speed. Bubble Brain built to a furious peak that ultimately exploded with the New Years Eve-like trimmings of lighting director Luke Strattons disco ball confetti. The funky sounds of Windermans Hohner Clavinet portended the funk that was soon to come from Grow before Compa found time and space to let his PRS guitar lead the way in Present Ghosts (Fun fact: Compa noted that the band had not rehearsed the song before pulling it out on Friday night). Trapper Keeper put an exclamation point on night one, defying musical classification and reminding us all that there are no genres, just artists.

Tune in again tonight, Saturday, March 20th, at 8:00 p.m. ET as Dopapods Were Gonna Get Through This run continues live from the Ardmore Music Hall via L4LM, Dopapod, Ardmore Music Hall, and Nugs.net Facebook pages, as well as on YouTube.

New Study Finds Trance Music Listeners to Be Among the Happiest – EDM.com

Posted: March 11, 2021 at 12:35 pm

We've learned that techno was found to be the least relaxing form of music, but a recent study has now uncovered what genres tend to inspire the happiest listeners.

The findings arrive from an independently conducted survey hosted by theOnBuy online marketplace. The in-depth language study analyzed over two million Reddit comments from 27 of the most popular subreddits for each music genre. They looked for mentions of both positive words and swear words to track if the genre evoked a sense of either happiness or aggression.

Trance music earned the highest spot out of the electronic music genres analyzed, coming in the 7th spot with 7,157 positive words out of 14,198 comments, which equates to50 positive mentions per 100 comments. The aforementioned "unrelaxing" techno actually made the list, landing in the 17th spot. It ranked higher than EDM, house, dubstep, and drum & bass. Interestingly enough, the latter landed in the top three in terms of the least positive language used online.

It comes as no surprise that trance music would rank as high as it did on a list analyzing positivity. The genre champions uplifting song lyrics and feel-good melodies that unite fans across all walks of life. To find out how your favorite genre compares, check out the full studyhere.

Trance fans nearly twice as positive as dubstep fans, according to new study – Dancing Astronaut

Posted: at 12:35 pm

by: Josh StewartMar 10, 2021

A new study based on Reddits music communities has discovered which genres have the most positive fans. Chief among the findings, and surprising to very few, is that listeners of trance scored amidst the most positive, or as the study puts it, happiest fans. Alternatively, bass-heads, particularly fans of dubstep and drum n bass, scored among the least positive online communities surveyed.

The study, which was conducted by OnBuy, took aim at 27 subreddits of different musical genres, and gauged their positivity by the amount of upbeat contributions to the discussion. According to the results, jazz, metal, and opera were the highest scoring online communities, ranging between 77 and 56 positive mentions per 100 comments. Trance wasnt far behind, however, living up to the PLUR motif with 50 positive mentions per 100 comments. On the other end of the spectrum, genres like drill, dubstep, and drum n bass scored between 11 and 29 positive comments per 100, leading some to suggest that fans of trance are twice as positive as their bass aficionado counterparts.

It is worth noting that this study only targets the discussion of online communities, and not the scene or the genres as a whole. With that being said, the results fall in alignment with the uplifting themes of trance and the grungier aspect of genres like dubstep. Find additional results below, and the full study here.

On the Market: A Five-Floor Beacon Hill Townhouse with a Roof Deck – Boston magazine

This level of luxe comes with its own elevator, plus an entire main bedroom floor.

4 Otis Place, BostonPrice: $8,500,000Size: 4,500 square feetBedrooms: 4Baths: 4 full, 2 half

Youll spot this ivy-covered townhouse tucked on a private street in the Flat of the Hill section of Beacon Hill, surrounded by other brick beauties. When youre standing on that shrouded fifth-floor rooftop deck and gazing out towards the Charles, though, flat will be about the furthest thing from your mind. Here, its all about luxe living and penthouse dreams that soar so sky-high that this pad comes with its own elevatoralong with that $8.5 million price tag.

Start closer to Earth at the first floor, where the grand staircase leads the eye up to the second level, though youll want to explore the wood tones of the living room with its fireplace and the cozy sitting room nook with a custom window seat, which is awaiting new life as a library. Or, pen those best-sellers yourself in the first-floor office with its handsome wood-paneled walls and fireplace.

Start planning the post-pandemic bashes youll throw on the second floor, which is tailor-made for entertaining thanks to its open floor plan. Sip drinks in the living room while the fire flickers in the fireplace and you and your guests gaze at the streets below. Then, dish in the dining room with its custom wet bar with a tile backsplash for after-dinner cocktails. The traditional details of molding and panels flirt with the more modern style, especially in the sleek kitchen with its stainless steel hood and minimal cabinets.

Here, youll have to think bigger than a main bedroom: The entire third floor is your own personal hotel within the home. Unwind in the bright bedroom with its custom storage that cuts the clutter and separate seating area tucked by the windows. Past the walk-in closet and full laundry room awaits the behemoth of a bathroom, a gleaming masterpiece with double vanities separated by a custom window seat. The hardest decision is whether to settle in for a long soak in the free-standing tub or let the lure of the rain shower lull you into a trance of tranquility.

The fourth floor boasts two bedrooms, including one mini suite with its own bath and dressing room. And the crowning achievement of the fifth floor? The warmer weather cant get here fast enough to lounge in the sun-drenched living room, shake up a cocktail at the wet bar, and head to the roof deck where you can toast the whole night away while you enjoy some people watching in the streets below.
