Review of Amazon Primes The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season One, Episode Eight Alloyed – Television

Liam van den Hoek October 15th, 2022 - 9:55 AM

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powersfirst season concluded with its eighth episode, Alloyed. The finale included multiple twists and answered questions that had been building for the entire season.

The Stranger, played by Daniel Weyman (Gentle Jack, A Very English Scandal), opens proceedings along with Nori, played by Markella Kavenagh (My First Summer, Picnic at Hanging Rock),and three evil magical beings, including The Dweller, played by Bridie Sisson (Cowboy Bebop). The Stranger thinks that he has stumbled upon Nori when the Dweller has tricked him with the ability to shape-shift.They tell him that he is from Rhn and believe him to be Sauron. Nori eventually comes to help, along with friends, including Sadoc, played by Lenny Henry (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Penelope). Nori convinces The Stranger that he is not evil. He uses The Dwellers staff to save the Harfoots. The evil magical beings call him Istar, which means wizard, and although it is not confirmed, there is a definite suggestion that The Stranger is Gandalf. Sadoc injured in battle dies peacefully. Nori returns to the other Harfoots before she is allowed to leave with The Stranger on his journey to Rhn to discover more about his identity. His English accent and eloquent speech patterns are jarring.

Elendil, played by Lloyd Owen (Apollo 18, Miss Potter),andQueen Regent Mriel, played by Cynthia Addai-Robinson (The Accountant, Star Trek Into Darkness), head back to Nmenor by ship and reaffirm to each other their commitment. Together, they will ensure that their sacrifices including Elendils son and Mriels sight are not for nothing. On Nmenor, Mriels father passes away. Just before he does so, he reveals to Erien, played by Ema Horvath (What Lies Below), believing her to be Mriel, that upstairs he has seen the future. She understands what he means when she uncovers a palantri stone.

Back with Elrond, played by Robert Aramayo (Game of Thrones, Behind Her Eyes), and Celebrimbor, played by Charles Edwards (The Crown, The Duke), who prepare to disappoint their king with the news of their failure to ascertain enough mithril. Galadriel, played by Morfyrdd Clark (Saint Maud, Crawl), and a wounded Halbrand, played by Charlie Vickers (Medici), arrive and interrupt them. Halbrand recovers and suggests that Celebrimbor combine it with other elements to make it more powerful. Galadriel grows suspicious of her previous travel companion and his demonstrations of unfounded wisdom. She waits for historical data on the history of the Southlands. Halbrand is the hero when he suggests to Celebrimbor and Elrond that they should not force it to merge with other elements but rather allow it to do so with ease. Galadriel finds the information she ordered and discovers that Halbrand is not the king of the Southlands. She demands he reveal his true identity and is shocked to find out that he, the being whose life she just saved, is Sauron, the one who shes been hunting this entire time. He strikes her, sending her into a dream-like land memory with her brother, who was seen inthe first episode, A Shadow of the Past. She eventually breaks out of her trance and rejects his offer to join him to rule Middle Earth together. Halbrand does not think there is a distinction between ruling and saving.

Galadriel tries to keep her mistake a secret and informs the others that Halbrand will not be returning. Instead of making one ring with the mithril, they will make three to provide more balance. These rings are intended to be made only for elven use. Halbrand arrives in Mordor. The episode rolls credits to the song that reminds the viewer of the creation of the rings. This episode was the origin of the three elven rings. Halbrand will likely take what he learned from the elves to create the One Ring.

Alloyed was an episode of two real twists. The Strangers transformation into a benevolent wizard was both unexpected and rewarding. The misdirection of his destructive habits combined with their accidental nature cleverly lulled the audience into a sense that he was Sauron, the one Galadriel was hunting. This reveal was mostly well done aside from a couple of cheesy lines and his off-putting instant transformation into a verbose, English-accented, utterly cognizant Istar. The unveiling of Halbrand as Sauron was undoubtedly shocking, if not slightly nonsensical. There were clues of his darker side with street fights, vague answers, and mentions of a dark past, but nothing quite suggested that he was Sauron until this episode. That can be a delightful twist; however, it does automatically inspire quite a few questions. What was he doing for this entire season? Was Sauron, one of if not the most powerful beings on Middle Earth, having a massive tantrum? Did he really want to turn to a life of smithing? If he was looking to change for the entire season, why did he revert to his old self here? The unveiling of Sauron was the most exciting part of the finale and the season, yet it felt a little challenging to grasp. The rest of the episode generally fell flat with rather monotonous dialogue. Alloyed perfectly summed up the highs and lows ofThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powersdebut season with Amazon Prime. There were high-quality moments surrounded by disappointing scenes, stunning images, and unrewarding storylines.

Rating: 6.0/10

Smile is innovatively terrifying, ultimately unmemorable – The Emory Wheel

Posted: October 13, 2022 at 12:55 pm

Content warning: This review contains mentions of self-harm.

Say cheese! Paramount Pictures Smile, released in theaters Sept. 30, is the perfect bone-chilling blockbuster to kick off the spooky season.

Parker Finns directorial debut will have you leaving the theater in a trance which is precisely why you should get your hands on a ticket to see it on the big screen before its gone. I would say you wont regret it, but as you get into bed for the night, you might wish youd watched a different movie as the fear sets in and the goosebumps begin to spread.

Smile opens with a horrifying and disorienting shot as the frame slowly spins around the macabre image of a dead woman lying on a tattered mattress, clearly the victim of an overdose. The camera slowly turns around to reveal a young girl staring in a state of trauma-induced horror.

Before the unnamed girl even has a chance to blink, the next scene begins, and we meet our protagonist Rose (Sosie Bacon), a psychologist at an emergency psychiatric facility. Her patient, Laura Weaver (Caitlin Stasey) talks of an entity that follows her. It wears peoples faces like masks, she says. And it smiles at me. Its the worst thing Ive ever seen. The situation quickly escalates and Rose finds herself watching powerless as an unnaturally smiling Weaver kills herself with a shard of glass. Blood splatters the off-white tiled floor like spilled paint. Everything goes silent. Having just witnessed a gruesome suicide, Rose stands in shock as the screen goes black. Five large, neon-red letters fade into view from the blackness: the word SMILE flashes on the screen, accompanied by a deafening noise that sounds like it came straight out of Dantes seventh layer of hell.

After witnessing the traumatic event in the opening scenes of the film, Rose begins to suspect she is being tormented by the same spirit that haunted Weaver. Things begin to escalate, and Rose is determined to find the truth in the face of a horror that no one else believes in. But will she escape this entity, or will it be too late?

Courtesy of Paramount Pictures.

Smile rises above the crowd in a sea of modern blockbuster horror movies because of its ingenuity. By no means is the film perfect the script leaves the viewer wanting at times and the metaphor for the everlasting scars of trauma is thinly-veiled. Still, the film does exactly what it sets out to do: it scares. Bacons masterful performance of a regular person tormented by a superhuman malevolent force is at the heart of the film. Her tears and blood-curdling screams are realistic, but perhaps most impressive are her more subtle efforts: the strained smiles she practices in the mirror after a night of no sleep, the deep numbness in her eyes as she reaches her limit and the trembling of her fingers as she desperately searches her mind for an escape. However, Bacons performance isnt all that makes this movie worth seeing. The jumpscares are unexpected, the cinematography is surprisingly and consistently beautiful and the gory special effects are inventive and eye-catching.

The film succeeds chiefly in that it never takes itself too seriously. The It Follows of trauma (but not quite as good), Smile knows that watchers will settle into their reclinable theater chairs expecting a laughable horror blockbuster with no real fear factor. But, it stuns in its opening minutes and keeps you in fearful paralysis for its entire two-hour runtime. Smile is here for a good time, not a long time and it knows as much. The film will terrify middle schoolers at sleepovers and entice some genuine screams out of unsuspecting audiences until its gone in the vast expanse of forgotten horror blockbusters. Smile is a refreshing take on the modern jumpscare-filled horror film, but it just doesnt quite have that genre defining edge or biting relevancy to solidify itself as one of the greats. Due to its creativity, the film is a whole lot of fun and better than most of its kind, but nothing more.

Yet Smile deserves its fifteen minutes of fame. Watch it if you dare.

Fortunately, I dont have to in the case of Bonobo. The performing alias of England-born, LA-based producer and musician Simon Green, Bonobo hits that difficult-to-nail squarely on its head. Beginning with his 2000 debut Animal Magic but really hitting stride with 2010s Black Sands and 2013s The North Borders, Bonobo has regularly delivered layered, cinematic and flat-out sexy downtempo music that never panders to expectations. Meet the Artists Shaping the Wave Music Scene – EDM.com

Posted: at 12:55 pm

Since starting out as a simple hashtag on SoundCloud in 2017, Wave has become one of the most dynamic trends in the electronic music scene.

Initially championed by Plastician on his weekly "Rinse FM" show, the Wave genre has grown into its own flourishing DIY ecosystem, branching out and mutating into a bona fide movement.

While trap music was at a dead end and drum & bass hadn't yet exploded in the U.S., the Wave scene was thriving. Borrowing influences from U.K. dubstep, cloud rap, grime, witch house and trance, the sound steadily infiltrated the underground until it reached the ears of RL Grime. Due in part to his support of Skeler's track Arcadia at EDC Las Vegas 2019, Wave catapulted into the spotlight.

Despite the impact of the pandemic on the live music industry, the Wave movement continued to amplify and grow organically. And as the genre's popularity soars, so too does the success of its early adopters.

Read on to get familiar with the artists who are shaping the Wave scene.

It was 2017 when Annie Nightingale introduced Deadcrow on BBC Radio 1, predicting a bright future for the virtuosic producer. Since then, he has quickly become not only a pillar of the Wave movement, but also its ambassador to the bass music scene at large.

Deadcrow'scutting-edge approach to Wave often combines hardstyle and dubstep influences, leading to high-profile releases on Grime's Sable Valley, Steve Aoki's Dim Mak Records and UKF's sister label, Pilot. This year he played Belgiums Rampage Open Air festival and spent the summer showcasing his skills in the U.S.

If we had to choose a generational anthem for theWavemovement, itd be Skelers "Tel Aviv."Its not an overstatement to say that the Australian producer is primarily responsible for putting the "hardwave" sub-genre on the map.And despite his immense popularity, he is still hidden in plan sight.

When his rework of Hardwell's Arcadia caught the attention of Grime, it kickstarted a golden era for the Wave scene. With almost 20 million views on just the official uploads, his signature "Night Drive" mix series has heavily influenced the curation of tastemakers such as Trap Nation and Trap City. His live performances have been limited so far, but his recent signing with Kompass Music Group hints at tour dates on the horizon.

Producer, DJ, vocalist, and visual artist barnacle boi is positioned at the forefront of the Wave scene in the U.S. His dark, hip hop-oriented take on the genre has made him the name to go to if you're looking for emotive yet bass-driven music.

His repertoire includes a full-length album,2020, and dozens of originals and remixes of mainstream hits, like H.E.R's Slide and t.A.T.u.'s "All the Things She Said." When it comes to live appearances, barnacle boi has proven a force to be reckoned with. In late 2022 he'll perform at Colorado's legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Klasey Jones isnt your typical Wave artist. While hes part of the first generation of producers who pioneered the genre, his ethereal and intensely visual approach has made him a critically acclaimed, one-of-a-kind artist.

In the last five years, Jones has documented his growth and evolution as an artist with terrific storytelling. The U.K. producer hasjourneyed through sounds that have delvedinto influences ranging from movie and video games soundtracks to more dancefloor-friendly genres such as grime and drum & bass. The most recent chapter of his story, "Operation Midnight," is a multimedia project that includes both digital releases and printed comics.

Hailing from Philadelphia, Noah B not only participated in all the crucial moments of Wave history, but also left an indelible mark by being the first artist of the movement to be featured on UKF. Since his first release on PlasticiansTerrorhytmlabel back in 2016, Noah B has been constantly pushing the genre in new directions.

2020's Heavy Armor album can be considered the manifesto of his trademark space-themed, cinematic sound, but it hasnt stopped there. He has been instrumental in popularizing the intersection of Wave and drum & bass, like in Sense Of Time and TRNL.22, wherein he also incorporates psytrance influences.

A legend within the Wave universe,Klimeks notonly helped pioneer the genre, but more importantly, he is also the one who formalized the term at the dawn of the movement.

Responsible for hits such as Eternally Yours," Dreamescape 95" and Mystic Nights, Klimeks is the mind behind the seminal wavemob imprint. His renown is bolstered by the fact that just as the Wave movement began its ascent into the electronic music space, he suddenly went on hiatus. Earlier this year, he quietly made his return to the scene with four new masterpieces, which celebrate the classic sound of Wave.

If there's anyone who has explored far and wide the potential of Wave, its Juche. Starting in 2017, the French producer has built an immense catalog that includes releases on Liquid Ritual, vibe.digital, Tribal Trap terrorhtym, IMMINENT and Lowly, just to name a few.

With his visionary album Future Love Story, Juche can be counted among those who have most experimented with 4/4 rhythms, moving the Wave sound away from its bass roots towards more trance and synthwave territories. His most recent project, Story Prologue EP, takes on hardwave and pushes its uplifting potential to new heights.

Unpredictable and enigmatic, the prolific Brothel is one of the most fascinating artists within the Wave scene. Beneath the DIY and punk facade hides an artist whoholding Wave as the foundation of his projecthas made his artistic output a chimera impossible to frame.

Looking through the 12 tracks released by Brothel so far in 2022, we jump from anthemic Wave records like Right Here and the alternative rock flair of his Lil Peep remix to obscure bangers like LEGION, as well as the smoldering chill trap vibes of buffering.

Thanks toSorsari'sdancefloor-friendly nature, hardwave may have stolen the spotlight in the last couple of years, but the classic Wave sound is still alive and well. And Sorsari is undoubtedly one of its champions.

Active in the scene since day one, the Canadian artist may not be in his most productive period, but every release from him can be considered a masterstroke. His Burning EP and his latest single, Together, both encapsulate the very essence of Wave and at the same time raise the bar of what this genre is capable of offering.

How to fix an Apple Watch stuck on the Apple logo – Android Authority

Posted: at 12:54 pm

One of the most annoying problems plaguing the Apple Watch is a screen stuck displaying the companys logo. This issue can seemingly affect all models, but it occurs more often on older devices like the Series 3. If you have an older watch lying around with this problem, we may be able to help. Below youll find several ways to resolve the Apple Watch stuck on the Apple logo issue.

QUICK ANSWER

Hard reboot your Apple Watch by pressing the digital crown and side button for 30 seconds, or until the screen switches off. Your Apple Watch should reboot normally.

JUMP TO KEY SECTIONS

Theres no single fix for this problem, so theres a good chance that youll have to troubleshoot your way through it using multiple methods.

First, be sure that your watch is on its charging cradle and getting some power. Next, follow the steps below.

Hard reboot your Apple Watch

Jimmy Westenberg / Android Authority

Hard rebooting (or force resetting) will force your Apple Watch to initiate its reboot sequence even if you cant access controls and settings on the screen. Its a practical step that works across all Apple Watch models and solves most temporary software-related issues on these devices.

If you have access to a secondary charging cable, nows the time to bring it out. A damaged charging cable may not provide the power the Apple Watch demands.

See also: How to charge your Apple Watch

Use the Find My app

Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority

This is one of the stranger solutions youll find online. If a hard reboot or new charging cable fails to fix the problem, prompting the watchs Find My feature from their iPhone may snap the device out of its trance.

To use the Find My feature:

If the left-field solution above didnt solve your problem, consider this additional fix that requires your iPhone. Unpairing the Apple Watch from your iPhone and initiating a hard reboot may be enough for the watch to reinitiate its pairing system, snapping it out of its logo loop.

To unpair your Apple Watch from your iPhone:

Finally, one solution that requires a little more time involves letting your Apple Watchs battery drain completely. Depending on when the logo issue crops up, this process could take a few hours to several days.

More details: How long does the Apple Watch battery last?

What else can you do?

Jimmy Westenberg / Android Authority

Depending on the age of your Apple Watch, there may not be much else you can do. Weve seen plenty of users online face this issue with older Apple Watch models. Repairs may cost more than the device itself.

Apple Watch Series 8 (Wi-Fi)

Excellent Retina display Premium design Advanced tracking sensors

Apple Watch Ultra

Louder speaker Large battery Extensive features

Apple Watch SE (2022)

More affordable Made from recycled materials Excellent display

If your newer Apple Watch is stuck on the Apple logo, confirm if your warranty is up. In the US, your Apple Watch is covered by a one-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with Apples published guidelines. Depending on the issue, your device may be covered.

FAQs

Its unclear why the Apple Watch occasionally gets stuck displaying the Apple logo. Various factors could be the reason, ranging from a hardware issue to a software bug.

Realistically, theres no reason why you should upgrade your Series 3 if its fully functional. However, if you regularly get the Apple logo issue, wed recommend upgrading to a newer Apple Watch model.

Houston Texans offense in a trance, plus other Week 4 takeaways – Toro Times

Posted: October 8, 2022 at 3:07 pm

The Houston Texans played the Los Angeles Chargersthis past Sunday. The Chargers were the heavy favorite, but the Texans almost pulled together a comeback but once again fell short.

There are a lot of noticeable improvements from Houston, but the offense took too long to get moving as there was poor offensive play calling, and yet again, too many missed tackles on defense. The rookies looked great, but there is much to improve to become competitive.

Here are three takeaways from the Week 4 loss to Los Angeles, moving Houston to 0-3-1 overall after four games in the 2022 season.

Mandatory Credit: Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Texans offense has been in a trance, doing the same thing every game with no adjustments. The Texans will run the ball, which went very well, but quarterback Davis Mills will either make incorrect reads or rely on veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Until the fourth quarter, Mills missed reads, threw uncatchable balls and turned the ball over twice.

When the fourth quarter came, Mills finally opened his vision and made good reads, throwing it to three different receivers. Mills made a great throw to tight end Jordan Akins and followed that up with a short pass to running back Rex Burkhead.

Mills finally targeted second-year wide receiver Nico Collins for a deep 58-yard dart. Mills looked like he did at the end of last season with a few perfect passes and more trust in Collins. Mills looked great that drive, taking the right shots downfield and throwing to multiple pass catchers.

The Texans came close to substituting Kyle Allen in for Mills and having him warm up on the sideline, but then Mills looked good in the last quarter.

If Mills doesnt play as he did in the fourth quarter on Sunday this Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he may be riding the bench very soon.

Many Texans fans are already looking into the 2023 NFL Draft, hoping to select quarterback CJ Stroud from Ohio State or Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. It may be time to move on if Mills cant blow fans away and get their belief and trust in Week 5.

Hypnotherapist sexually assaulted woman he placed under a trance – The Telegraph

Posted: at 3:07 pm

A hypnotherapist has been jailed for carrying out an assault on a woman he had placed under a trance.

Ian Roper, 58, told his victim to imagine she was lying on a hot sunbed before commanding her to undress and cover herself in imaginary sun cream.

When the woman came round and realised what was happening, Roper attempted to hypnotise her again, ordering her to forget the incident.

But instead she went to the police and Roper was charged with causing her to engage in sexual activity without her consent.

Bradford Crown Court heard how the qualified hypnotherapist had assaulted the woman during her second session with him.

David McGonigal, prosecuting, said the defendant had initially put her under by touching her shoulder and had then taken her to her safe place.

Mr McGonigal explained: He said the only thing that mattered was his voice, and she had to listen to his command.

He told her she was lying on a sunbed getting hotter and needed to rub imaginary sun cream on herself.

The prosecutor said Roper had taken the womans bra off and had instructed her to remove her clothing as she continued to rub herself with the imaginary cream.

He said when she had come round she had pushed the defendant away but when she had attempted to get dressed he had tried to put her under again, telling her she would not remember what had happened.

When police analysed Ropers computer, they discovered five indecent images of children and one prohibited image of a child.

Roper initially claimed the allegations against him were false but later admitted the offences when he appeared in court.

Sentencing him to 25 months imprisonment for the sexual offence and an extra four months for the indecent images, Recorder David Gordon said Ropers interests had been motivated by selfish and sexual desires.

He said: You were purporting to administer a therapeutic treatment but it is clear you never intended anything of the sort and your interest was selfish and sexual.

The judge also said that Roper would have to register as a sex offender for the next 10 years and enforced a restraining order against him.

Recorder Gordon further imposed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, which includes a ban on Roper working as a hypnotherapist.

The Up & Coming EDM Genres Likely To Strike It Big In The Coming Years – Critical Hit

Posted: at 3:07 pm

EDM is a popular music genre as a whole, but within the category of EDM are a huge variety of subgenres, with new subgenres constantly being added to the mix through experimentation and development.

While there will always be the staple EDM genres, like progressive house and trance, emerging genres are creating their own unique spin on the music.

In this article, well go through some of the EDM subgenres that are gaining traction in the underground music scene, and are likely to make a major splash on the mainstream music scene in the next few years.

Rave dance parties in the 90s were punctuated by wildly flailing glow-sticks, bodypaint, and the thumping drum loops of acid house or industrial techno.

This early revival is seeing a resurgence in the underground music scene as it appeals to both a nostalgic older crowd and a younger crowd experiencing something new for the first time, says TeenVogue.

Record labels like Kniteforce Labels have been scooping up a lot of big names from the early 90s rave scene and releasing new material on vinyl.

Of course, there were many subgenres in the 90s rave period as well, so a few of the ones seemingly making a major comeback include:

Behringer also released a TD-3 Synthesizer for only $100, which many are saying could pave the way for a major acid techno revival as hobbyists can enjoy a cheap dual setup for live acid performances.

A blending of electronic trance music with good old Mississippi Blues, trance blues has been emerging from the chill vibes niche crowd onto the mainstream, thanks to artists like Otis Taylor, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Guy Davis, and others.

Its a relatively simple concept on paper digging through the history of Mississippi Delta Blues music (see here) to find banger tracks that follow that genres exact blueprint, then giving them a modern twist by adding an atmospheric, floating melodic/synth bassline.

Its not a new concept in music and has been happening for years in more experimental genres, like psychedelic trance. But trance blues is starting to gain a more diverse following, and especially with the abundance of music streaming services today could well be a very popular genre in the next few years.

Producers David Guetta and Morten Breum coined this genre which has taken the EDM world by storm in some ways its difficult to label it up and coming, because its already here, but what weve witnessed with the genre so far only seems to be the tip of the iceberg.

A blending of early Big Room EDM, with its focus on huge house drops and deep basslines, with a bit of modern melody and techno leanings, Future Rave is certainly ripe for experimentation and cloning, and its success will no doubt lead to a number of copycat genres in the next few years.

While David Guetta and Morten may be the best example of this subgenre, other artists are creating signature sounds with it, including names like Olly James, Sander Von Doorn, and Dada Life.

Im sure well be hearing a lot more of Future Rave in the future, pun intended.

Known for its smooth, flowing melodies layered over the deep basslines of Drum and Bass, Liquid DNB is seeing a surging increase in interest, both from EDM fans and EDM newcomers.

Coined in the early 00s by the legendary DJ Fabio, liquid DnB emerged as a reaction to the harsher, more aggressive techno styles of the late 90s, says RollingStone. It focuses on melodic, atmospheric melody and enticing synths, with head-nodding drum loops.

While the genre has long been a mainstay in the UK, its experienced a massive surge in popularity worldwide in recent times, including the US and Indonesia.

The next few years will likely see a number of major producers jump on the bandwagon, creating truly original Liquid DnB tracks which take the subgenre into the new millennium.
