TONGUE IN CHEEK: Rack and rune: A sangoma-druidess has seen our future it wears pink gloves and goes ‘he he he’ – Daily Maverick
Posted: January 24, 2022 at 10:18 am
Were all so concerned about what the future holds not just the long-term future (climate change: the Earth burns, everybody dies) but the short-term future (ANC implodes, South Africa collapses, you cant get a decent coffee in Rosebank any more). And now were looking at a new year, 2022, that could easily be a repeat, perhaps with small variations, of 2020 and 2021
So I went looking for someone to predict that future. And, after a few misfires, I found a woman who could see at least something of whats looming in 2022.
Shes named Fata Cattiva. Im presuming thats a nom de clairvoyance, because Fata runs a thriving business in seeing the future, predicting whatll happen in the world and in your life, whether youll get your lover back, et cetera; also how to get that cash windfall, how to remove a curse that has been placed upon you, how to put a curse on someone, and so forth.
Shes a fully qualified sangoma, inyanga, reiki healer, Tarot decipherer, Vedic astrologer, reader of the runes and a druidess and she has the fancy furry outfits to prove it. She draws on multiple traditions, she says, in order to mobilise all the necessary cosmic forces to see to your personal desires and needs.
At present, shes doing a lot of shamanic work with The Wheel of Time matrix the hit TV series has revealed certain things to her, and although shes not going with the Dragon Reborn stuff (thats a few thousand years out of date), she has a whole lot of new fateful information to pass on.
Okay.
So off I went to Fatas place of residence and work were all working remotely now, clairvoyants especially. She says she can claim a tax rebate on the area of her home that she uses for her work, though that is in fact all of her home, because her powers extend to the whole property. Actually, she confided to me, shed like to claim a tax rebate on the whole cosmos, because the whole cosmos is her workplace, but SARS doesnt acknowledge the cosmos yet.
Enough of tax matters. We leave that to SARSs mystic department, though some claim thats a rogue unit. Apparently the International Harry Potter Institute is looking into its credentials. In the meantime, we have Fatas look into our immediate future.
I went with specific questions, but Fata said she wasnt doing questions that day. (This was 1 January, and most people were braaiing without a thought for the future.) No, she just went into a prophetic trance and began to speak in the voice of her angel-demon-guide, known as Urizen, to tell me what lay beyond the time urizen I mean horizon.
Oooh, aaahhh, aaahh Thats Fata going into a trance. It took a while. Apparently she needs some strong drink to get into that trance state a double cane and Coke, actually.
So there were a few more ooohhs and aahhhs, some groaning, some writhing about on the floor (a special carpet woven with a representation of the key constellations), some more glugging from the cane and Coke, and we were away.
I see I see come on, Urizen, what do we see?
Her voice changed into a deep, rumbling basso profundo.
It is I, Urizen, and I see
Yes, I said anxiously, what do you see, Urizen?
Quiet, said Fata. Dont interrupt.
Sorry, I said, biting my tongue. That was painful.
I see, I see What do I see?
The basso profundo got even deeper and louder. The needle showing the recording function on my phone was jumping into the red, but I dared not adjust it.
I see four horsemen!
(Ah, I thought: the Book of Revelations was right!)
Er, actually, I should say four horsepeople
Theyre galloping around the wasteland, seeking whom they may devour So to speak. Galloping, gambolling
(I wanted to ask who they were, the four horsepeople riding the four horses of the apocalypse, presumably but it was as though Fata-Urizen could read my mind and she/he went on in that booming voice.)
Okay, the one at the back yes, on the brown horse, hes going slowly Hes an old man Hes going round and round in circles, laughing to himself Chuckling He goes He he he
(Right, I thought, we know who that is.)
And then theres another, near the back Looks like hes riding a donkey, actually it isnt entirely clear Theres a lot of fog here, or maybe its smoke. Dark, black smoke.
(Are we still, I wondered, in the world of The Wheel of Time? Sounds a bit more like the End of Time, as in Loki, the Marvel Universe spinoff series But, again, Urizen-Fata read my mind.)
All time is present in Time Present! cried Urizen, sounding like a bit more of a baritone for a moment. From the End of Time, I see all time But especially the next year or so that you asked about.
Okay, I whispered.
That old guy on the old donkey Hes also going round and round And hes shouting Coal! Coal! Burn! Burn!
(Must be Uncle Gweezy, I thought.)
Hes yelling: Green transition? My gouty foot! We got no green here! Just red! And black! Black smoke, oily black smoke! Let the world burn!
(Oh dear, I thought. But I didnt want to say anything.)
And there are another two horsepeople, said Urizen. And theyre going mad, going wild The one on the black horse is galloping towards us and she, yes, its a she she has the biggest, wildest hair in South African history! And bright pink gloves!
(Gosh, I thought, pink gloves? What could that mean? Is this the female version of The Phantom of the Opera?)
The biggest! The wildest! More hair than a lead character in The Lord of the Rings! And thats without the beard!
(Hang on, are we changing horses or horsepeople in midstream here? Are we switching fantasies? I thought this was a series But, again, Urizen read my mind.)
All fantasy movies and series are present in the mind of Urizen! But especially trilogies and eight-episode series! From the vantage point of the End of Time, I see all!
(Great, I thought. Well be in the DC universe next.)
And shes riding, and riding, and fire cometh from her great sword, which she holdeth in her pink-gloved hands! She crieth, F*ck the C*nstit*tion! F*ck the r*le of l*w! Shes raising funds from dodgy businesspeople and tenderpreneurs! And taxi mafia bosses! Not to mention charismatic preachers and funeral-parlour moguls! Someone has to pay the MK veterans! The presidential bid of the One with Enormous Hair and Pink Gloves will not be cheap!
(I started doing some maths, based on the projected figures of the CR22 campaign, but Urizen was booming along.)
And theres another horse a white horse! Could it be the plague? The white horse is ridden by someone with many names except they are all the same name. Im getting an M and another M Moo Moegoe Mogoeng Mogoeng Mogoeng
(The world seemed filled with echoes going Mogoeng, Mogoeng, Mogoeng I felt a shiver down my spine.)
He rideth the white horse, and he shouteth! He curseth the 666, the Mark of the Beast, that shall infiltrate the very DNA of each person and inscribe them with the devils mark, never mind a hefty bill from your neighbourhood G5 provider!
Urizens voice grew louder:
He cometh like a prophet! [Oh dear, is my job at stake?] But he cometh, and he cometh! He is unstoppable! He sweepeth all opposition aside! He is the new Lord of All! And the people shall pick up their hoes and pangas, and they shall follow him to the ends of the Earth! Or at least to the ends of the landmass Except he may soon invade Zimbabwe! And Botswana! And he shall preach the Gospel of the Anti-666 and he shall rule forever!
Wait, wait, I stammered, terrified. I dont understand. Is all this going to happen in 2022? The pink gloves I get, and the others, but Mogoeng? Hes a retired judge. How can he ?
But Fata had fainted. And Urizen was silent. DM168

Afrojack & Steve Aoki’s 2011 classic No Beef gets Royal Treatment with REMIXES Pt. 2 – EDM Sauce
Posted: at 10:18 am
The 11th anniversary celebration of Afrojack & Steve Aokis No Beef continues, lining up a second round of titanic talent to remix the iconic dance hit. Featuring the eminent talents of R3HAB, Timmy Trumpet, Gabry Ponte, and DLMT, the Remixes Part 2 roll out the red carpet for Afrojack & Steve Aokis 2011 release, infusing the timeless tune with a heaping dose of modern rave energy.
The Remixes Part 2 are led by Dutch house kingpin R3HAB, who ups the ante on the meaty original with sharp synth stabs and a revitalized rave agenda. Between breakthrough remixes from Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga, to his duo of charting LPs, its clear that any tracklist featuring R3HAB is certified as quality. With his third album on deck, his remix of No Beef serves as a satiating taste of whats to come.
Never one to miss a party is Australias Timmy Trumpet, who brings a fresh take to his always impressive sound with his remix of No Beef. A melting pot of acid techno and trance influences, Timmys remix shows a new rift to his ever-evolving sound. After his breakout release, Freaks, which has been spun over 500 million times, and his 2020 LP, Mad World, Timmy Trumpet has asserted himself as one of the frontmen of dance music today, with his latest remix of Afrojack & Steve Aokis No Beef explaining exactly why.
Also entering the fray is Italian superstar Gabry Ponte, who fights fire with fire by giving No Beef his signature in-your-face electro house treatment. The result, like nearly everything that Ponte touches, is a larger-than-life recipe for successready for everything from festivals to the playlists. A modern marauder of innovative beats, Gabry Pontes tracks like Monster, and the more recent Thunder, paint a picture of an artist who simply cannot miss.
Last but not least is DLMT, who leans on thick, bouncing kicks, laserlike synths, and a purring bassline for a club-ready fix. Its a birthday in true EDM style, taking the music as wide and far as possible, providing the legendary No Beef with a new, inspired set of DJ weapons. Enjoy the party, and remember No Beef!
No Beef is an absolute classic track that Afrojack & I collaborated on 11 years ago. When we realized we were coming up on the anniversary of the release, we just had to bring the track back with a set of brand-newremixes including one I made myself. Im so excited for you guys to hear these new takes on one of my old favorites.
Steve Aoki
11 years later and the crowd always goes wild whenever I play No Beef! Steve and I had to celebrate the anniversary by giving it some fresh life with new remixes from some of our favorite artists. Hope you enjoy!

Zepp is Funk Dave Watts Birthday Party Turned Benefit
It started out as a birthday party show. On December 30, it became a benefit performance.
Zepp is Funk, a Funked-Up Tribute to Led Zeppelin, is the name of the Dave Watts birthday party scheduled for February 5 at Cervantes Other Side in Denver, stacked to the rafters with great players (and many more likely to join in). Watts is the drummer of The Motet, a band he founded in 1998. Since then, the band has played to millions of fans.
Watts world, and that of his family and friends and thousands of people in Superior, Colorado, was ravaged by the Marshall Fire December 30. Most people lost everything as the fire ripped through the area with hurricane winds in excess of 100 mph. Since that time, there have been numerous benefit shows around the area and across the country in support of those who lost their homes. Some of those have been specifically for Watts, Danielle Nicole Gregory, MC PK Williams, and their family.
Recently, Watts post this photograph and message about how the drummer community has selflessly pitched in to help him. The Motet just finished a run of shows in Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
And, as you might expect, the birthday celebration will also be a benefit show. And what a show it will be! The musicians listed for the show include: Jason Hann (The String Cheese Incident), Joel Cummins (Umphreys McGee), Shawn Eckels (Andy Frasco & The U.N.), Todd Smallie (JJ Grey & Mofro), Tony Tyler (Tony Tyler Trance), Gabe Mervine, Kim Dawson (Matador! Soul Sounds), Nick Gerlach, and Mark Wilkolak. And you can bet there will be twice as many in the audience.
Want to help? There is a GoFundMe set up for them.
And another benefit coming February 4:

Celtic Connections review: Dallahan and Stundom, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall – The Scotsman
Posted: at 10:18 am
Dallahan and Stundom, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall ****
Dallahan are the sort of well drilled yet intuitive outfit who in another, kinder year could set the Celtic Connections Festival Club alight. However, with all (official) late night merriment cancelled at this years festival, this dynamic quartet had to get the party started in the pristine environment of the no-drinks-allowed new auditorium of the Concert Hall in front of an audience who were keen to go with them, and clapping optimistically from the start.
With a line-up comprising singer-guitarist Jack Badcock, who led on the mellow ache of an original heartbreak number, accordionist Andrew Waite, banjo and mandolin player Ciaran Ryan and fiddle prodigy Benedict Morris (the utterly undaunted new boy), they often sounded like a folk band playing rock tunes which were then spiced up with characterful instrumental passages and juicy opportunities to show off solo chops.
Their self-styled world folk sound was showcased by the gypsy freedom of a fiddle-accordion pas de deux which must have made their cosmological trance set inspired by Carl Sagan their out-of-this-world folk sound and by the time they hit their closing set of propulsive reels, this ensemble were positively zinging.
Thankfully, in all the uncertainty and restrictions, an international element to the festival has been preserved.
Copenhagen trio Stundom returned to Celtic Connections following their 2020 debut, offering a gentler class of jig than the headliners. However, fiddler Emma Elme, pianist Julian Svejgaard Jrgensen and cittern player Villads Hoffmann had some distinct tricks up their sleeve.
Their homage to cycling (downhill) captured a sense of freewheeling release, their affectionate tribute to the rollercoasters in Denmarks vintage amusement parks slightly less so, and they will almost certainly be the only act at this years festival to incorporate the enchanting tinkle of an antique music box in their set.

Every extra decibel matters – The Times of India Blog
Posted: January 19, 2022 at 11:12 am
A recent paper by Jennifer DSouza and colleagues [1] analyzed the effect of long-term urban noise in Western cities, on blood pressure and found that for every 10 dBA increase in noise, there was an increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
Audio version of the blog
Noise pollution is ubiquitous and affects all of us to some degree or the other, in one way or the other.
A few years ago, I went to a discotheque/dance pub in Bandra with a visiting niece and her husband. They played trance music in an enclosed room and a couple of hours later when we left, my ears were ringing.and continued to ring till the next evening. Clearly, I had killed some of my auditory sensory cells that day.
This was an example of extreme exposure to loud noise, but even the noise that pounds us on a daily basis can cause harm. The older I grow, the less I can stand people honking or playing loud music or for that matter using loud ring tones on mobile phones. I now wear a pair of AirPods Pro whenever I am in the car and restrict my outdoor walks and runs to the morning, when the din is far less. A secret? I carry and often wear my earphones at weddings and other events, especially in halls where loud music is being played or performed. Hell, I even carried them to the horrible U2 concert two years ago in Mumbaihorrible because the sound was so terrible, it made U2 sound worse than a college band getting together for the first time. The AirPods helped dampen the screechy sound and actually made it easier to listen to them.
Sixty five dB is the upper daytime limit in commercial areas, 55 in residential and 75 in industrial zones. Inside our homes and living areas, 30 dB is the maximum level of sound that the WHO and other bodies recommend [2].
Consistent exposure to noise above these levels is harmful.
The harm can be broadly divided into two verticals. The first is direct, where the noise affects our hearing. Hearing loss is a profoundly disabling condition and creates problems, not just for you, but also for those around you, who then have to adapt to your inability to hear. Modern hearing aids make a huge difference as do cochlear implants, even in the elderly, and I will write about this in detail in the future. But suffice to say, if we can take steps to prevent hearing loss in the first place, by limiting or reducing our exposure to loud noise, that would go a long way in our atmasvasth quest to live long, healthy. The temporary ringing that I experienced after my exposure to loud trance music, is medically called tinnitus and if this becomes permanent or continues for a long period of time, it also affects our health adversely.
The other health problems with loud noise are the more insidious changes of noise sickness. The first is raised blood pressure, where the causal data is becoming more and more robust as in the recent article that I started this piece with.
Loud noise also affects sleep and poor sleep, in turn, is associated with a reduction in healthspan and lifespan. Noise sickness includes increasing annoyance levels and irritability, poor mental well-being and increasing risk of cardiovascular disease, apart from high blood pressure.
Unfortunately, the quality of evidence for these outcomes is not robust and though it seems quite obvious that loud noise is harmful, a lot more research needs to be done to show cause and effect and then to determine whether measures taken to reduce noise levels improve these outcomes.
As Danah Boyd says, Uncertainty is central to the scientific process. But in a public policy context, uncertainty can be politicized to undermine scientific consensus, [3] as has happened with cigarette smoking, ultra-processed foods, Covid-19 vaccines, etc.
Surprisingly and thankfully, most governments and policy makers are not waiting for the results of high quality research, but based on common sense, laboratory tests and guidance from the WHO, have already instituted measures and laws to reduce noise levels to the lowest possible.
Legislation though is just a start, because what is more important is enforcement. While we are often able to reduce decibel levels related to firecrackers or festival music through a combination of enforcement and social and peer pressure, reducing noise due to honking, especially in Indian cities, seems to be an impossible task at this point in time. All our major cities have outdoor noise levels beyond prescribed norms and Mumbai and Delhi are also among the noisiest cities worldwide.
So how does this affect you and I and what can we do. At a community level, we should try and put pressure whenever and wherever possible, on noise polluters around us to reduce noise levels. Often, those who create noise (pandals, commercial ventures) may not even be aware of the problems they are causing and just talking to them sometimes produces positive results, without having to take recourse to the law. Loud noise affects all of us and often the perpetrators themselves are willing to reduce noise levels for their own well-being.
At an individual level, you can start by not honking and by training your drivers and chauffeurs not to honk. You can also request taxi drivers to not honk and perhaps even give them an incentive (an additional Rs 50 or Rs 100), if they can manage the ride without honking. Apart from not honking, you can also make sure that you are not the one adding to the noise pollution at home or at work.
And lastly, you can reduce your own exposure to noise by wearing headphones and earphones, preferably noise cancelling, whenever and wherever you believe there will be undue loud noise. I started with a pair of Bose noise cancelling headphones many years ago on flights. Nowadays, I make sure my AirPods are always near me and use them liberally. Most noise cancelling headphones reduce decibel levels by 20-30 dB, which can mean the difference between staying sane and being annoyed and distracted and irritable.
In our atmasvasth quest to live long, healthy, it is a good idea to reduce our exposure to noise. And even if the medical evidence related to specific harmful effects and adverse outcomes is not as robust as with other factors such as physical activity, food, smoking, etc, the lower the noise levels, the more peaceful our lives will be.

Armin van Buuren’s ASOT 1000 show rescheduled due to Covid-19 – We Rave You
Posted: at 11:12 am
The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic continues to unleash devastating blows to the live events industry, with lockdowns throughout the world making festivals and shows impossible. Armin Van Buuren sees himself as the next artist to be affected by these restrictions as his highly anticipated ASOT 1000 in Utrecht, a celebration for Armins 1000thASOTepisode, faces a further postponement.
Already receiving multiple postponements in the past, the show was originally supposed to take place on 3rd and 4th September 2021 before being rescheduled to the 18th and 19th February 2022. Now due to the extension of restrictions in The Netherlands brought in by the Omicron variant of Covid-19 Armin Van Buuren himself took to social media via a video announcement in great sadness to inform eager festivalgoers that the iconic shows new date would be 3rd and 4th March 2023. Armin Van Buuren states in the video:
Weve been following the news closely and with the current situation, we feel its not responsible to organise episode 1000 the celebration weekend in February 2022 with the health and safety of our fans, staff and the artists on the line. Therefore its with deep sadness weve decided to postpone the show once again.
there was a further statement on The State Of Trances official website which informs that the international element, as well as the sheer magnitude of the event, was another reason that the show has seen a postponement. It also states that ticket holders will receive more information on the next steps regarding their tickets via email over the next few days. You can check out the statement in its full here and you can also view the video from Armin Van Buuren below. We hope that the ASOT 1000 Utrecht can take place on its new date of3rd and 4th March 2023.
Last night, the Dutch Government has extended the covid measures. Therefore, it is with deep sadness that we have decided to postpone the ASOT Celebration Weekend to 3 & 4 March 2023, in Jaarbeurs Utrecht.

Both stages have been carefully curated alongside Focus Wales and BBC Horizons, providing an unrivalled platform that will truly establish them as Wales next generation of music stars.
Bethan Elfyn, Project Manager for BBC Horizons said: Were excited at Horizons to see a new festival on the Welsh map we look forward to supporting the festival, curating some of the Welsh talent and working with the team to make the weekend one to remember. Its so important after the last couple of years of restrictions on music events to see new events provide new opportunities and experiences for Welsh artists.
As well as welcoming some of the best talent Wales has to offer, the festival will also host a range of local food vendors providing the very best in local cuisine, as well as working with local suppliers from across the country to create a truly Welsh experience, while the festivals website will also be available in both English and Welsh.
Escape Records Director Adam Gore added: Our company was born out of the Cardiff nightclub scene, starting out hosting parties in the smallest venues in the city, to filling 3000 capacity venues on Greyfriars Road. Weve since gone on to launch festivals all over Wales, but this will undoubtedly be our biggest project to date. We are incredibly proud of our Welsh roots and felt it only right that we make our biggest ever festival a true celebration of Wales and Welsh culture.

Ask any creative individual where they draw their inspiration from and theres a good chance that travel sits high on their list. Acquainting one with various forms of art, culture and ethos, travelling allows people to accumulate all sorts of experiences.
And fashion has often found creative input and inspiration in travel. Travel-induced design sensibilities tap into the intricate and intuitive qualities such as delight, beauty and cultural resonance. Lets find out how their journeys have impacted the aesthetics of these designers.

I get influenced and inspired by the people, flowers and architecture of places I visit. My last collection was inspired by my trip to Santorini, Greece. I soaked in everything from the architecture and colours of the ocean to the sky and how it changes the mood of the city with its shades. These elements have found their place in my collection. Similarly, my upcoming show at Paris Couture Week is inspired by my love for mountains. Flowers from Uttarakhand such as anemones, geraniums, marsh marigolds, primulas, asters, blue poppy, cobra lily, and brahma kamal will find a place in the digital show.
Designer Shruti Sancheti
Travel has been an integral part of my life. Since childhood I have always been interested in exploring different cultures; their art and architecture. Over the years, my travel experiences have found their way to manifest themselves into my various collections. From the trance-inducing Dervish dance, the Faberg, or beautiful places of Czech Republic to intricate antique weaving traditions of Benares to rustic mining traditions of Jharkhand, many elements come together for a collection. When I travelled to Czech Republic, I found myself spending more of my time and resources in a souk, flea market or weavers center as opposed to fancy malls and high streets.
Designer Ritu Beri
I love visiting local souks and markets in order to discover their uniqueness. Flea markets all over the world have always been my first choice to visit and they are a treasure trove of ideas. Fashion and design are always influenced by global culture. The traditionalism of a place is a great influence and creates global trends. When I discovered Uzbekistan, I was obsessed with its ikats and in all my collections I used Ikat. In Central Asia, ikat is beautiful as it is striking in its sophistication and minimalism.

From visiting art galleries to local boutiques, exploring a new place gives an insight into its culture and society at large. The local art, textiles and even the people you meet all of it can inspire one. For me, Mexico was that. It inspired me with its colours and vibrancy. New Yorks (USA) effortless street style, and Israels silver antique work have left a mark on my creations. My recent trip to Rajasthan was also wonderful as it gave me an opportunity to explore the beautiful block prints.

Recently, I visited Mardin in Turkey and an indelible mark has been left on my mind. I distinctly and fondly remember it being located above a rocky hill over the Mesopotamian plains near the Tigris River. The beautiful monuments, mansions, museums, mosques and the wonderful Deyr-az-Zaferan Monastery, the fifth century saffron monastery, speaks volumes about the old civilisation. The bazaar is an enchanted place where you find the famous bittim oil soap, which is made from wild pistachio, along with angora, cotton, fine jewellery, the regions special wines and dibek coffee, which is made with salep, roasted coffee, mastic gum, chocolate, cardamom, cream, milled in the dibek stone.
For me travel has always been a source of inspiration, whether it is from getting onto a flight or even people watching in a transit zone at the airport. Whether it is for travelling to Kanchipuram for their sarees or visiting Kalamkari artisans or interacting with the weavers of Paithan, these travels inspire my colour and design sensibilities. An interesting source of inspiration was one of my trips to L.A where I had the opportunity to visit a studio that deals with prosthetics. I was deeply inspired by their attention to precision and I believe Its very important not only to be inspired by colours, textures and weaves but also by the technique of making a garment..

I feel travelling really helps in shaping fashion content aesthetically. When travelling to a new place, its very important to understand the culture before you plan anything else. It helps in fitting in to the place. It helps in expainding your social circle and meeting new people hence it is important to do a little research before hand to avoid unintentional signs of disrespect. I buy stuff that is of cultural importance to the place youre travelling like authentic souvenirs. I personally make sure to get magnets of the countrys traditional items.
Lifestyle influencer Ishita Mangal
When I travel, I look for local markets and locally crafted goods in the area Im going to. I like to research about the authentic and locally made crafts of that place and go to their stores. That item then ends up being not just a unique piece in my wardrobe or home but also a souvenir. I want to collect unique items from all over the world to make my own one of a kind collection.I like to observe the habits, behaviour, food, architecture and especially, fashion of every area. Inspiration is literally everywhere irrespective of where you go to. Its all about what strikes you. Whatever catches my eye, I take a picture or make a note of it. And keep coming back to these pictures or notes to use in my content or work. I am especially extremely drawn to understanding the art, culture and fashion of every place. From culture you can understand the derivations in their art and fashion both. Its very interesting to understand how beliefs of humans influences the way they live, their dressing and their likings.
