Possession and Psychiatry | Gene Veith – Patheos
Posted: May 25, 2022 at 4:19 am
The Los Angeles Times, no less, published an interesting article on demonic possession.
Lynn Hightower, in her article Exorcism is something we cant quite quit, cites reports that the number of exorcisms being requested in the Catholic church has risen considerably since the pandemic. Recounting some scary stories, she says that possession is increasingly being accepted as a reality by the psychiatric profession, with therapists sometimes co-ordinating with priests in an effort to cast out the oppressive spirits.
She says, Possession is now recognizedin the American Psychiatric Assn.s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
This is not fully accurate. She links to a discussion about planned updates to that manual. The 4th edition of that manual did include possession trance as a type of dissociative identity disorder, defined as follows:
Dissociative trance disorder: single or episodic disturbances in the state of consciousness, identity, or memory that are indigenous to particular locations and cultures. Dissociative trance involves narrowing of awareness of immediate surroundings or stereotyped behaviors or movements that are experienced as being beyond ones control.Possession trance involves replacement of the customary sense of personal identity by a new identity, attributed to the influence of a spirit, power, deity, or other person and associated with stereotyped involuntary movements or amnesia, and is perhaps the most common dissociative disorder in Asia. . . .The dissociative or trance disorder is not a normal part of a broadly accepted collective cultural or religious practice.
The 5th edition considered bolstering that description, but the author being quoted posted an addendum at the very end of his discussion: In DSM-5, Possession Trance Disorder no longer exists.
Of course, the psychiatric manual is not ascribing the condition to any supernatural causes. And these rather anemic symptoms that are listed are mild compared to what the church exorcists are seeing, as Hightower reports:
The symptoms of the possessed are always fairly consistent: Inordinate strength. Knowledge of hidden things. Speaking languages with no prior knowledge of them, sometimes backward. Foaming at the mouth. Embodying a malevolent entity that curses, makes threats and cannot tolerate the presence of sacred things, such as a crucifix. Suffering seizures, eyes that glowed yellow, a twisting distortion of limbs that seemed impossible. Testifying that something bad wanted to bloom inside them, to be them.
Baffled and frustrated psychiatrists have turned to exorcists, she says, seeking help for patients whose torment does not follow the path of schizophrenia or delusional disassociation and does not respond to treatment. She cites the best-selling psychiatrist M. Scott Peck, who dealt with some extreme cases and admitted he went from being a complete nonbeliever to a complete believer in the demonic ability to possess.

Perkie’s Observations: Nina and Bobbie Rumble at The Savoy on General Hospital – Daytime Confidential
Posted: at 4:19 am
Cynthia Watros, Jackie Zeman
On today's General Hospital recap:Carly and Bobbie end up at The Savoy, and are not happy to see Nina and Sonny drinking together. Bobbie wants to say something to them, but Carly stops her. Nina says Sonny has suffered for being involved with her and decides she should leave.
Sonny stops her, saying he prefers having her around. Sonny overhears Bobbie ask Carly about the test results and interrupts to ask if she's sick. Carly tells Sonny that her health is no concern of his anymore. Sonny says he still cares about her health even if they're divorced.
Bobbie tells Nina to drop her petition and the two get into an argument about how Nina stole Sonny. Bobbie brings up evil Nelle and Nina digs up all of Bobbie's transgressions, calling her a prostitute. Bobbie throws a drink in Nina's face, and Carly and Sonny have to break things up.
Finn wonders if Violet is on to something, saying Liz may be doing this herself. Gregory doesn't believe Liz would torment herself and her boys. Finn thinks maybe the sleep aid Liz has been taking might be responsible for what's happening. (Anyone else notice Jophielle had the hiccups, and both she and ME were trying hard not to laugh.)
Marshall and TJ take on the robbers, and Curtis arrives as Marshall is injured. Paramedics take Marshall, while TJ explains to Curtis and Molly what happened. TJ feels badly he fought to keep the clarinet, which caused this.
At the hospital, the doctor asks if Marshall has any medical issues or takes any medications, but the Ashford men have no answers. Curtis tells TJ that Stella knew all along about Marshall and his mother kept it quiet. Curtis sits with Marshall waiting for the test results.

Taggert confronts Jordan, accusing her of letting Trina take the fall instead of finding who's really responsible. Jordan says the case is now in the hands of the DA. Portia mentions the Title IX report and how Trina is worried she'll be expelled. Jordan says the judge won't allow the Title IX into evidence.
Jordan mentions how much of a support system Trina has and Portia agrees that Taggert has been very supportive. Jordan has a memory of Portia saying something about Taggert and Trina when they were almost killed. Jordan says she heard Portia's voice tell her about Trina and her father. Portia claims she was deprived of oxygen and was talking nonsense.
Taggert runs into Sonny, and swears Trina wouldn't do what she's accused of and Sonny agrees.
Michael and Willow worry about the hearing tomorrow and what will happen if Nina wins. The two declare they will support each other no matter what. The two have wild passionate, drawn out sex, and my fast forward button gets a good work out.
Liz tears Finn and Violet out of the picture then starts cutting into small pieces.
Cameron comes home and talks to Liz, but she appears to be in a trance. Finn heads to the house where he speaks to Liz and gets the scissors from her. Liz snaps out of it and wonders how she got there. Cameron tells her that he found her in a trance cutting up the picture. Liz says she doesn't remember any of it.
Finn says he thinks Liz is the one who's been messing up her life. Finn thinks Liz was sleep walking and Liz doesn't believe it at first. Liz starts to wonder if she was responsible for all of it and Finn reassures her. Finn promises her they'll find out what's wrong with her.

5 things to do to unwind after a long day
May 25, 2022, 11:36 am 2 min read
Had a long and tiring day? If you are wondering how to unwind after such hectic days, we've got your back. If you think of laying on your back and getting up when you feel good, it's probably not worked for you. Try the following methods to unwind post a long day at work and see them work the magic on you.
Warm water relaxes your muscles and helps in increasing circulation. It's a low-cost alternative to a spa massage, in the comfort of your home! To feel fancier, light some scented candles, put on a relaxing playlist on your phone, add bath salts to your tub, and soak in it for at least 10 minutes. Not only will you feel calm but also smell amazing!
Go to the park for a walk, or tend to your plants at home, but be outside. You can also go running in the park. Working long hours in closed spaces makes us anxious, spending time in nature will probably help reset your energy to be productive. Just sitting outside on the balcony or by the pool will help you unwind.
Physical activity is often the best thing to do to relax. The boost of feel-good hormones gives you a natural calm that helps reduce stress and promote relaxation and calm. Yoga is often associated with stress relief, whereas activities like running and swimming are perfect mood boosters as they help in reducing anxiety. You can also play a certain sport to unwind and chill.
Put on some relaxing music--birds chirping, water trickling down a stream, or waves crashing on a beach--that can calm your mind and slow your breathing. This doesn't have to be a special session, as you can listen to music while doing chores. Reverb songs, trance music, or any other music you enjoy will work if it makes you happy.
Pets are your free therapists! Pets are always happy to see you, so spend enough time with them. Play with them, take them out for walks and runs, and cuddle with them. Giving love also makes one feel great. Spend this time simply being next to one another instead of doing chores like taking them to the vet! Chores will bore you out.

O’Neill: On the rhythms of life (column) – The Mendocino Voice
Posted: at 4:19 am
This is our farm column from farmer Casey ONeill. ONeill is the owner operator of HappyDay Farms north of Laytonville, and a long time advocate for the cannabis community in Mendocino Co; more of his writing can be found here. The opinions expressed in this column are those of the writer. If you would like to submit a letter to the editor feel free to write to [emailprotected].
As I travel through this journey of life, I form relationships with family, friends, community. We share in the joys and tribulations, the great happenings and the tragic sorrows. We hold each other up, supporting and holding the burdens and reveling in the good times. I spent the weekend in a beautiful place, camping with community, sharing in food and drink, music and revelry.
After two years of pandemic, gatherings have an additional special feel, catching up with folks I havent seen in far too long. Changes have happened for all of us, young people have grown, beloved elders have passed on. Life continues with the inevitable passage of time, and I take a moment to reflect and feel the gratitude of human relationships and the beauty of nature.
There is something so precious nestled within and among us, so subtle that it often slips by in the hustle and bustle of busy lives. We see in each other the strengths and weaknesses of mortal, human creatures, and we make each other stronger by recognizing the shared places in which we find ourselves. We experience smiles and joy, the trickling brook, the crashing waves, the sun and sand on our skin, and we are changed for the better.
So often I fail to take the time to get out, but when I do make the effort Im always glad of the results. I draw energy from interactions with others, sharing meals, telling stories, catching up where we left off when last we crossed paths. I see the children growing older, the young people becoming adults, my peers stepping into middle age. I treasure the elders, and seek the wisdom and lessons that they offer.
Life is precious. Within the stress and intensity of the daily journey I lose sight of the depth and magic within, yet it is always there, just below the surface. Taking time out to gather reminds me of what I value, showing me a mirror so that I can assess my choices and practices.
Its been far too long since I played much music, and I found deep joy in bringing out my box drum and brushes around the campfire. I realized this weekend that Ive been playing percussion instruments for more than 25 years, and yet I still feel like I have so much to learn about music.
I had the chance to play drums with other drummers and with players of string instruments and flutes. We shared in the joy of music, the improvisation of it within the structure of rhythm and cadence. We sang old songs and made up new ones, reveling in the shared experience. Music is like life, both routine and unique, mundane and special. We find ourselves in the spaces between, looking for the pocket within the beat.
There is a trance state that comes with deep percussion, especially when combined with cannabis, mushrooms or other mind altering substances. Playing deep into the night, switching up the rhythms, leading and following each other through the beat brings a depth of soul and feeling that I value.
Music ebbs and flows in my life, sometimes a strong force that has me enjoying the group effort of practice and playing shows, and sometimes a background that I listen to but dont participate in. Sometimes I go long stretches without playing, but every time that I return to the music it is there like an old friend, ready to pick up where we left off.
Over the years Ive gotten more comfortable, able to play different types of music with the enjoyment that comes from presence in song. All else drops away, there is little thinking, just the present moment and the sounds of the instruments. That feeling when it all hits right and everyone starts smiling and nodding is one of the biggest joys in my life.
Every time I have a proper session I think to myself I want to be more regular with music, not to set it aside until the next camping trip months later. Sometimes I even stick with it, playing and practicing for a while until it slips away with the busyness of farming. This is one of those times when I feel refreshed and excited, wanting to continue playing more often. To the teachers, the players of instruments, the singers of songs; thank you! May the rhythm find you well, and as always, much love and great success to you on your journey!

Living A Double Life As Bubbles Wasn’t Easy For The Wire’s Andre Royo – /Film
Posted: at 4:19 am
HBO's "The Wire" spearheaded a new kind of drama television upon its 2002 debut, earning heaps of praise for its patient, cumulative writing and talented cast of lesser-known (at the time) actors. When series creator David Simon pitched the show to HBO's miniseries division, he envisioned a television version of The Great American Novel, writ large over a sprawling season depicting the dissolution of an American city in this case, Baltimore, where Simon spent a year deposited with the city's homicide unit for a year leading to his Edgar Award-winning novel, "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets." The show is only vaguely a cop drama; its principals include law enforcement, drug dealers, politicians, stevedores at the docks, and addicts, all illustrating (over five seasons) the colossal failure of the government-initiated war on drugs.
Far more than a simple "cops and robbers" template, "The Wire" expressed an unprecedented level of interest in its players, none of whom are exactly what they seem. One of the series' most compelling examples of this was Reginald "Bubbles" Cousins (so-named for the spit bubbles made when he's in a heroin-fueled trance), played by Andre Royo. A recovering addict, Bubbles begins the show as the sort of onscreen junkie you'd come to expect from a cop drama, but quickly reveals himself to be resourceful and empathetic with far more complexity than the old tv caricatures would previously allow. That didn't make it any easier for Royo to slip into the role, which was as taxing as it was fulfilling. Brett Martin's book "Difficult Men: Behind the Scenes of a Creative Revolution" surveys the trajectory and impact of the series, and Royo gets a few words in about his experience as Bubbles.
Royo's audition for the role of Reginald Cousins was the "Fringe" star's first chance to make an impression. Cast interviews in the Season 5 DVD extras reveal that Royo showed up to his audition only to see that everyone else was chewing gum, presumably for bubble-blowing purposes. He threw his gum out to stand out, and eventually got the part. "Difficult Men" reports that while he and much of the cast were hailed as "local heroes" whenever they went off to Baltimore clubs, the on-set experience was at times a draining one:
Separating one's self from the complex men they portray day in and day out is a difficulty stars have voiced from the late James Gandolfini in "The Sopranos" to Nate Fisher (Peter Krause) of "Six Feet Under." The intimate connections between cast and character is, if nothing else, a testament to the top-down creative compact with the narrative and the people that fuel it, part of the show's lasting power.

All the New HBO and HBO Max Movies and Shows Coming in June – TV Guide
Posted: at 4:19 am
Thandiwe Newton, Westworld
The most high-profile thing happening on HBO and HBO Max in June is the return of Westworld, which last aired in 2020 despite kind of feeling like it's been away for even longer. Season 4 doesn't kick off until June 24, but there are plenty of other new shows and movies to keep things interesting until then.
Early in the month is Irma Vep, which stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned actress with a new gig, a new season of the funny and vibrant animated seriesTuca & Bertie, and one of 2021's most interesting movies, Paul Schrader's The Card Counter. June also sees the premiere of two documentaries: the timely abortion film The Janes and Morgan Neville'sRoadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain.
Below, we pulled together our picks for the month, plus a list of everything else coming to HBO and HBO Max in June, and everything that's leaving HBO Max, too.
Alicia Vikander, Irma Vep
HBO Max streams all HBO shows and movies when they debut on HBO. But not all shows and movies on HBO Max make it to HBO. We'll designate HBO Max exclusives where appropriate.
Try to stay with me as I describe the deal with Irma Vep, which is a limited series adaptation of Olivier Assayas's 1996 movie of the same name, which itself is about remaking Louis Feuillade's 1915 silent film seriesLes Vampires. Once you process that, it's pretty easy to understand. In the series, Alicia Vikander takes the mantle from Maggie Cheung as the disillusioned actress starring in theLes Vampires remake. The line between what separates TV and movies continues to blur every day, but this looks great.[Trailer]
Emma Pildes and Tia Lessin's documentary follows a group of women in the pre-Roe v. Wade era who built an underground network that helped provide access to safe abortions for people with unwanted pregnancies. The organization was formed in direct opposition to state legislation that banned abortions, making this film feel unfortunately timely.[Trailer]
You might remember hearing about Roadrunner a while ago for the ethical questions that sprung from the news that director Morgan Nevilleused an AI model to create audio of the documentary's subject, Anthony Bourdain, who died by suicide in 2018, "speaking" lines that Bourdain had only ever written down. At the very least, you can decide for yourself where you stand on the issue by watching the film, which explores Bourdain's life and legacy.[Trailer]
Paul Schrader loves making movies about troubled men who let out their messed up little thoughts in diaries. (He wrote Taxi Driver and wrote-directed First Reformed.) Oscar Isaac stars in Schrader's latest as a former serviceman whose quiet life of gambling and journaling is complicated when he meets a kid (Tye Sheridan) seeking revenge on a mutual enemy.[Trailer]
This is not the 1991 Steve Martin Father of the Bride, but this 2022 version follows a very similar plot. This time, though, it centers around a Cuban-American family and stars Andy Garcia in the role of the father whose daughter is getting married.[Trailer]
If you missed Tuca & Bertie's second season when it aired on Adult Swim, now you can enjoy the antics of Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish's anthropomorphic bird girls at your leisure. It continues to expertly and sensitively explore issues like sexual assault and complicated female friendships, all while being incredibly funny and vibrantly animated.[Trailer]
If you told me Westworldwas last on TV in 2005, I'd probably believe you. (Just kidding, Westworld premiered in 2016.) If you can believe it, though, the series was last on TV in May 2020, and now it's returning for Season 4. I can't explain the passage of time to you or to myself, but I can remind anyone reading this that when we last caught up with this universe, the Man in Black (Ed Harris) got killed by his robot doppelgnger, and Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) sacrificed her memories to destroy the evil machine controlling humanity. Season 3 ended with a big shrug from a lot of fans, but this show has a way of sucking you back in.[Trailer]

Death Grips hint at return and tease new music – NME
Posted: May 15, 2022 at 9:56 pm
Death Grips have hinted at their return by teasing the arrival of new music.
Earlier today (May 12), the group shared a short, 15-second clip of new music on their social media channels.
The short video, which you can see bellow, feature a flashing light and a moth leaving some hands with an overlay of trance music.
The groups last music release came in 2019 via Gmail And The Restraining Orders Mix as part of an anniversary collection for Warp Records.
Back in February, Death Gripsunveiled a collection of clothing that features the album artwork for 2012s No Love Deep Web. The cover of the bands second studio album was notable for its sexually explicit imagery.
The capsule collection from Vetememes and Rough Simmons featured Death Grips uncensored No Love Deep Web artwork on items like parkas and sweatshirts. Conveniently, they all come with a removable magnetic censor bar.
Elsewhere in the same collection, there were items featuring the American rapper Viper. The clothing is being billed as officially licensed Death Grips merchandise, with all proceeds going to the band. Check out the collection here.
Last May, Zach Hill shared the debut single from his new group, Undo K From Hot, titled 750 Dispel. Writing on Instagram, Hill said: I have a new group called Undo K From Hot and shared the songs artwork and groups new Instagram account. Its the second track on their debut album, G.A.S. Get A Star which arrived on May 7, 2021.
Meanwhile, the previous month, Danny Elfman shared a new version of his track Kick Me remixed by Hill. I was a big fan of Death Grips and Zach Hills work, and so appreciative to have him jump in with his creative energy, Elfman said of the track.
Death Grips last album was 2018sYear of the Snitch.

Is ‘The Northman’ Based On A True Story? What Do The Viking Practices Shown In The Film Signify? | DMT – DMT
Posted: at 9:56 pm
The Northman is loosely based on the Norse mythology about a young Viking prince named Amleth, in Vita Amlethi. The story is about how Amleth manages to avenge the death of his father, King Aurvandil, who was killed by his brother, Fjlnir. Inspired by Nordic literature and lifestyle, the film comes up with an original story that would be fitting for the Viking age. What makes The Northman overtly believable is the research that went into getting the visual details right, be it the way people lived in Iceland during the time or the fact that many Vikings escaped the regulations and traveled from Scandinavian countries to Iceland. The Viking Icelandic settlements were studied for their rightful depiction in the film.
Amleth had witnessed the beheading of his father, King Aurvandill, by his brother, Fjolnir. He had only one purpose in life from then on: he wanted to kill Fjolnir. It was the desire to seek revenge that kept him alive. After running away from the Kingdom of Hrafnsey, Amleth had grown to be a Viking berserker. The berserkers were warriors who ransacked settlements, and they drew their maddening power from the bears and wolves. The night before the attack, they would indulge in a trance ritual wearing skins of the animals. They would mimic the movements and sounds of the bears and wolves, and as the day would break, they would enter the villages camouflaging themselves with the animal skins and ultimately revealing their intentions. One particular scene that perfectly described the barbarians during the act was when Amleth tore the flesh off an armed man to kill him. During the raid, it was about transforming themselves into animals and murdering humans at will. According to Norse mythology, it is said that the berserkers shapeshifted into animals and won battles for themselves.
The seers were an integral part of the Viking era. They enjoyed a high status during that time for their ability to foretell the future. Their eyes were sewn shut; even though they could not see the physical reality, they had the power to look at both the past and the future. At night, when Amleth met with a seeress at the temple of Odin in the village they raided, she recognized him. She knew it was Prince Amleth, even though the world thought he was dead. She reminded him of the revenge he had to take and how he could get closer to his motive. She advised him to cross the ocean and reach the edge of the world to land on an island where he would meet a vixen. He had to follow its tail, and he would reach the place where he could find a sword that was designed to destroy his enemy. This revelation of the plot much before Amleth started his journey reflects the power that the seeress held. The Seeresses were known for practicing an ecstasy technique called the Seid to travel through time to reveal secrets.
After his confrontation with his mother, Gudrun, she revealed how cowardly King Aurvandill was as a husband. Amleth was shocked to learn the truth about her mother, who confessed to loving Fjolnir and wanting the death of Amleth. In that moment of fury, Amleth murdered Fjolnirs elder son, Thorir. The funeral ceremony that followed Thorirs death demonstrates the burial customs of the Viking age. Thorir was given a ship burial where his body was laid on a boat, and he was offered all that he required to make the journey to his after-life smooth, which also included sacrificing enslaved people. We witness a slave girl joining Thorir in the boat, indicating how she was sacrificing her life for her master. She joined him to serve him in his after-life as well.
In the concluding scene, Amleth, before dying, envisioned his wife and his two children. They were happy and safe. It was his sacrifice that protected them from the evil that could destroy their lives. According to his vision and the words of the seeress, his daughter would grow up to be a maiden king. He fought his enemies in the present time to protect his daughter, who had a bright future ahead. In the end, Olga tells him to cross the passage. The journey every warrior hopes to make after losing their lives on the battlefield. It was considered the highest honor to die on the battleground, as that meant that they would have a place in Valhalla. According to Norse mythology, Valhalla is a royal hall that is located in Asgard, which is ruled by Odin. Valhalla translates to the hall of the slain. Amleth was at peace when he was carried on a winged horse by the Valkyries. The Valkyries were female figures who guided the Nordic warriors to the majestic hall of the slain.

Poem: Death of a Santoor – The Wire

Death of a Santoor
To Ustad Zakir Hussain
When I heard the master of santoor isNo more, I played his jugalbandi with youOn the tabla, the strings in vilambit layaFelt like droplets of water on the grass,I could hear the flight of a grasshopper.Nature spoke to nature. We are hereTo listen, the nature of each instrumentMerges with the nature of another,And music is born. You join him midwayLike a ship sets sail to the tempo of wind. What were you telling each other? This isAll there is? Tat Tvam Asi: Thou art that,You are each other. The sound of yourHands in trance, this is all that remains ofHistory, this is what heals the bloodThat flows in the absence of music. YourNames bring your gods together, theyHear you like children before the wordWas born, you play on. Fishes in the bloodNibble on the flesh, old landscapes dieBefore the eyes, time gently goes to sleep.
[The death of the eminent santoor player, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, marked the end of an era in Indian classical music. He had singularly popularised the gentle string instrument, the santoor, worldwide. He played along with some of the finest classical musicians in India and abroad. Sharma, long with the flutist, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, also composed music briefly for some romantic musicals in Indian cinema. Sharma also played memorable jugalbandi (duets) with Ustad Zakir Hussain, the legendary tabla player. The photograph of Hussain standing alone near the pyre at Sharmas funeral, seeing his old friend and fellow musician depart from this world, was a poignant and touching reminder of love and friendship in an atmosphere of hatred and violence. This tribute to the late maestro is dedicated to his friend, Zakir Hussain, and their performances together.]
