Cloud: The Driving Force for TMS and Other Industry Trends – Logistics Viewpoints (blog)

Posted: June 1, 2017 at 10:43 pm

ARC Advisory Group conducts an annual analysis of the global transportation management systems (TMS) market. The research process includes the analysis of large amounts of information and interviews with executives from numerous TMS software companies. The process concludes with the publication of ARCs TMS Global Market Research Study, which analyzes the market shares across numerous categories of the leading TMS suppliers. Aside from the market share analysis, the study looks at the trends that are driving and/or inhibiting growth in the TMS market. This years study will be publishing in the next week so I wanted to give a sneak peek at some of the high-level trends around the TMS market.

One of the biggest trends in the TMS market is the rise of cloud and SaaS solutions. While SaaS revenues grew significantly this year, software revenues declined. With more supplier turning to cloud-based solutions, this is a trend that will continue. When companies make the commitment to SaaS, there is a learning curve. Generally, companies see that for every percentage in growth in SaaS revenue, their software revenues to shrink by 3 to 5 percent. Cloud solution providers generally discourage customization, at least within the base code, resulting in faster implementations, which causes a decline in implementation revenues. The lack of customization means maintenance revenues will also decline.

SaaS solutions are becoming increasingly popular in the TMS market, with more small suppliers selling SaaS solutions to Tier 3 customers. For those companies selling software licenses, especially smaller companies, the out-look is not good. Unless a strategy is in place to transition to a cloud solution, these smaller companies likely will not be around for many more years.

Aside from the SaaS megatrend, below are a few regional, industry, and complementary market trends:

Regional Markets

Industry Segments

Complementary Market Trends

If you are interested in the complete report, which analyzes the growth of the TMS market in multiple segments, please contact Conrad Hanf (chanf@arcweb.com). The report includes market share data and a five-year growth forecast of the overall market and specific segments and industries.

Report: TMS market will grow to $30 billion by 2025 – Supply Chain Dive

Posted: May 26, 2017 at 4:15 am

Dive Brief:

The thread connecting the trends driving current TMS expansion is a need for individualization, or a specific model to aid the business in question. Because TMS software typically aims toreduce costs through a vareity of services like better route planning and load optimization, improved transparency, or greater flexibility for delivery changes a single method is unlikely to dominate the market.

For example, a small supplier expecting growth may seek to manage that by optimizing routes and loads, but may not require Big Data capabilities or desire greater transparency. A larger supplier, too, may benefit from such technology but would likely apt to adopt more encompassing systems to meet its greater needs.

Either case highlights the salesman's challenge in the industry: buyers often desire a specific solution for their problems, and vendors must adapt their systems to such needs, at least rhetorically. That's why many TMS providers also offer a consulting or implementation service, to better match needs with software solutions. Or, why application program interfaces integrating various systems are becoming increasingly common.

That's also why terms like visibility, Big Data and sustainability can catch on in the diverse industry vendors must idealize solutions to make them applicable, yet customizable, to all. These supply chain trends will ensure continued growth and adoption in the technology space.

ezVision product improves control tower visibility over transportation management tasks, firm says.

By DC Velocity Staff

Logistics technology provider MercuryGate International Inc. today said it has launched a new user interface for its transportation management system (TMS) product that could make the software easier, faster, and more dynamic to use the.

This "ezVision" product provides customers with quick access to the most critical and frequent functions done on a day-to-day basis, creating a workflow that maximizes user efficiency, according to MercuryGate.

The new interface provides a greater level of control tower visibility, supporting fast responses to unplanned requests and reducing the number of clicks or actions required to complete any TMS task, MercuryGate CEO and co-founder Monica Wooden said in a release. The ezVision interface also includes a single, consolidated search screen that searches across execution loads, customer loads, and invoices all at once.

The release is the third update to MercuryGate's platform this year. Earlier in 2017, the company launched a "dynamic information exchange" platform called MercuryMart, which provides TMS users with access to a broad range of sources of available capacity, and unveiled a "logistics integrator program" that connects its TMS users with pre-approved logistics service providers (LSPs) that can advise shippers on tricky supply chain applications.
