IndyCar drivers prepare to enter a ‘new world’ of racing when the season resumes June 6 at Texas Motor Speedway – The Dallas Morning News
Posted: June 1, 2020 at 3:43 am
FORT WORTH With an unwelcome assist from the COVID-19 pandemic, IndyCars traditionally lengthy offseason will have reached 258 consecutive days when the green flag drops on the 2020 season-opening Genesys 300 at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday.
Josef Newgardens victory in last summers night race on TMS 1.5-mile oval helped propel the Team Penske ace to his second NTT IndyCar Series championship in three years at the season finale in Monterey, Calif., on Sept. 22.
Start the clock.
The global pandemic that has marked the end of the innocence for American spectator sports began in early March. Widespread public health concerns prompted sanctioning body IndyCar to revise, reshuffle and reduce its original schedule from 17 to 14 races, move the tradition-rich running of the 104th Indianapolis 500 from May into the dog days of August, and devise a rigid set of social distancing protocols.
As a result of the latter, the Genesys 300 billed as Americas Original Nighttime IndyCar Race since its debut in 1997 will become the first series event run without fans watching in the grandstands.
Yeah, its a strange time, right? said Newgarden, a 29-year-old native of Nashville. I think its been tough for everybody right now, regardless of what industry or way of life youre operating in. A lot of things have been taken away, our passions and our jobs a bit altered. Its going to be a new world for us racing here.
Responding to public health concerns, the race has been shortened from 248 laps to 200. IndyCar will operate a condensed schedule with practice, qualifying and the race on the same day. Teams are scheduled to take the green flag at 7:10 p.m., with network broadcast coverage on NBC starting at 7 p.m. NBC Sports Network is scheduled to air a half-hour preview at 6:30 p.m.
We have some tasks at hand; we know what they are, said Newgarden, who will carry the No. 1 on his Team Penske Chevrolet as reigning champion. I know the first couple of weeks of this lockdown in the United States, it felt quite hopeless. Now we feel pretty positive that we have something to work towards.
Indeed, in his role as promoter extraordinaire, TMS President and General Manager Eddie Gossage recently dubbed the Genesys 300 one of the most important races IndyCar has ever held, adding, People are starving for sports programming, so theres an opportunity to have strong TV ratings around the country and around the globe.
Newgarden and popular Canadian driver James Hinchcliffe said they have watched NASCARs three major touring series make successful returns, without fans, at Darlington Raceway and Charlotte Motor Speedway since May 17. Drivers, crewmen and officials have been wearing masks while social distancing on pit road and even during TV interviews.
Its been actually quite fun to watch the NASCAR guys, Newgarden said. Were going to be looking to do much of the same.
Similarly to NASCAR, Newgarden and Hinchcliffe agreed the Genesys 300 is likely to draw curious first-time viewers to the open-wheel series.
Do I think its a hallmark day for the series? Yeah, absolutely, said Hinchcliffe, 33, whose three-race deal in an Andretti Autosport Honda is being sponsored by Genesys. Do I think its a make-or-break day? No, not really. I think IndyCar racing is going to get back to what we do, and thats going to continue for years to come regardless. Certainly we want this to be a successful race. We want it to be a good show. Were on network in prime time. Theres a lot of reasons that we really want this one to go well.
But you know, Eddie needs to make it sound like its the biggest race in history, so that way more people tune in and thats totally fair.
Newgarden noted the TMS night race, typically featuring razor-thin finishes, has evolved into must-see TV.
Its always had a storied place in IndyCar history, Newgarden said. But in these current situations, without a doubt its going to be a very important event for us. Is it the most important event in IndyCar history? I have no idea if it is or not.
It will be, for sure, an event to get right. A lot of pressure. But I think everyone involved will really be able to rise to the occasion and do a great job.

Work begins on Hong Kong rail extension – The Construction Index
Posted: at 3:43 am
Rail operator MTR Corporation (MTRCL) is to be invited to proceed with the detailed planning and design of the Tuen Mun South (TMS) extension.
The project, which will extend the West Rail Line from Tuen Mun Station southwards by about 2.4km, is one of seven recommended railway schemes in Hong Kongs Railway Development Strategy 2014.
A new TMS Station will be built near Tuen Mun Ferry and there will also be an intermediate station in Tuen Mun Area 16, to unlock the area's development potential.
The extension largely runs along the Tuen Mun River. It is designed to improve railway access for the community south of the current Tuen Mun town centre and connectivity to Tuen Mun Ferry Pier.
Approximately 60,000 people within the 500m catchment of the TMS Station, while there are about 49,000 residents living within the 500m catchment area around the proposed A16 Station.
A statement from the Transport & Housing Bureau said: The TMS Extension with the A16 Station will offer an alternative commuting choice to the residents in the vicinity and divert more commuters to rail-based transport, which may help relieve the congestion of the existing roads.
Furthermore, the provision of the proposed A16 Station is essential for unleashing the potential for residential development at the A16 site and helps increase the housing supply.
The government will negotiate with the MTRCL on the funding arrangement of the project, which is expected to start construction in 2023 for completion in 2030.

Hilton TMs Save Life of Guest Suffering Heart Attack – Franchising.com
Posted: at 3:33 pm
By: DoubleTree by Hilton | 0Shares 14Reads
May 21, 2020 // Franchising.com // SHANGHAI - A moving story was recently told far and wide in Suzhou City, Anhui Province. Frank Huang, Deputy Manager of Safety and Security, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Anhui Suzhou, and fellow Team Members used first aid skills, developed through regular training, and deftly operated the hotels first aid equipment to save the life of a guest suffering sudden cardiac arrest.
At around 8:20 a.m. on April 17, a hotel guest was walking around the hotels western carpark and suddenly passed out. When receiving a call for help, Frank Huang and his fellow Team Members, including Front Office Manager Alex Chen, Customer Service Manager Oscar Liu and Deputy Chief Engineer Jack Li, rushed to the scene. When seeing that the guest had collapsed, had difficulty breathing and turned purple, they immediately took action. As the guests symptoms did not respond to their efforts, Huang resolutely performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after evaluating that the guest had likely suffered a suspected sudden cardiac arrest.
Meanwhile, Alex Chen dispatched someone right away to bring the automated external defibrillator (AED) always available at the hotel, and assisted Huang with defibrillation on the guest. In combination with appropriate CPR, Huang skilfully operated the AED. The guest began breathing faintly on his own, when an ambulance arrived, just over ten minutes later since the incident began. Then, with the help of Frank Huang and others, the guest was taken to Wanbei General Hospital. The guest has now fully recovered.
Hilton has consistently prioritized the health and safety of its guests and Team Members, a commitment that informs its Team Member training programs. Routine training in hospitality practices and skills in hygiene, safety and first aid proved to be the key to success in saving this guests life.
The health and safety of our guests and Team Members remains Hiltons top priority. With this in mind, routine training of our Team Members is a serious and critical endeavor, said Qian Jin, Area President, Hilton Greater China and Mongolia. Frank Huangs actions have demonstrated the valuable achievements of these trainings. We are encouraged to put even more emphasis on health and safety in the future as part of helping guests feel the light and warmth of Hilton Hospitality, and providing our guests with assurance and peace of mind when they stay at any Hilton hotel.
The hotels long-term commitment to training Team Members proved essential to the success of saving this guests life. To raise awareness and hone the skills of all Team Members, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Anhui Suzhou invites the Red Cross Society each quarter to offer training on AED use and first aid knowledge, ensuring Team Members in every department master relevant skill. Each Team Member also must participate in Food Safety Annual Audit (FSAA) training and assessments every week or month and are qualified only if they earn 90 points (on a 0-100 scale). Moreover, the hotel provides training on Make IT Right (MIR) service skills every month to help Team Members continually improve, yet another iteration of the hotel taking responsibility for the hygiene and safety of its guests.
Frank Huang is one of many exceptional Team Members at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Anhui Suzhou, and fulfilled his duty to serve and protect guests just as any Team Member would. Prior to joining Hilton, Huang served in the military, where he was awarded six times as he moved up the ranks, and was named an excellent soldier, squad leader and sergeant. During the COVID-19 outbreak in China, Huang remained at his post at the hotel when it proved too difficult to return home. He managed to procure high-quality disinfectant, which was used in every corner of the hotel three times a day. To address social distancing guidelines for Team Members, Huang reached out to suppliers and organized centralized delivery of daily necessaries and vegetables, which were disinfected and delivered to Team Members homes. On behalf of the hotel, he also donated medical supplies to local hospitals.
