How does the brain create our perception of reality? – EurekAlert

Posted: November 9, 2021 at 1:42 pm

WASHINGTON, D.C. New findings from studies in both people and animals are revealing clues about how sensory information and cognitive processes interact in the brain to produce our perception of the world. The findings were presented at Neuroscience 2021, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience and the worlds largest source of emerging news about brain science and health.

Sensory inputs, such as sights, sounds, and touches, yield rich information about the external world. But our perception and interpretation of sensations are heavily shaped by cognitive processes such as attention, expectation, and memory. A better understanding of the neural basis of perceptual phenomena will help clarify both ordinary experiences such as the ability to pick a single voice out of a noisy background and disorders in which perception is altered such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism, schizophrenia, and Alzheimers disease.

Todays new findings show:

The neuroscience findings presented today demonstrate the importance of comparative brain studies in long-standing issues in human perception and cognition, said Sabine Kastner, a professor at Princeton University who studies visual perception and attention. These advances show how research in different model systems can come together to inform our understanding of the human brain, from the neurobiological mechanisms of perception to our subjective perceptual experiences.

This research was supported by national funding agencies including the National Institutes of Health and private funding organizations. Find out more about sensory perception and the brain on BrainFacts.org.

TMS Publisher: Bronson Recall is misguided when Assembly races loom – The Midnight Sun

Posted: at 9:40 pm

By Jim Lottsfeldt. Lottsfeldt is the publisher of The Midnight Sun.

A recall effort aimed at Mayor Dave Bronson is a terrible, no-good, stupid idea.

Nonetheless, someone will try to champion it.

It will fail.It will waste resources better spent on other efforts. And it will jeopardize the progressive majority on the Anchorage Assembly.

Mayor Bronsons approval numbers are taking a beating. He has plenty of self-inflected bruises from championing covid-19 misinformation, attacking health care workers, defending antisemitism at the Assembly hearings and taking down protective plexiglass partitions while two members of his senior staff are spreading covid-19 around an Assembly meeting. The list of self-inflicted wounds is actually much longer, but you get the point.

But that doesnt translate to success. After all, you could argue that Bronsons doing exactly what the voters wanted when they put him in office. Post-election Bronson isnt far off from pre-election Bronson.

Unfortunately, the courts have made the standard for recalls almost non-existent.So, why not use that lax standard and recall him?

The Assembly regular election is in April. Its only a few months away. Forrest Dunbar, Meg Zaletel and Kameron Perez-Verdia do not need the energy, money and attention of progressives misdirected towards a long-shot recall. Anchorage isnt New York City.Conservatives can win elections here; Dave Bronson just proved it.

Leave the recall alone unless and until Mayor Bronson does something that proves hes completely unfit to hold office. We arent there yet.We hopefully will never be there. The Anchorage Assembly should keep working with him on excellent compromises like the recently ratified homelessness plan. And when hes wrong, fight against his proposals as the Anchorage Assembly has done with success. That is the purpose of split governance.

Alaska has no scarcity of bad political ideas. So, I expect someone will run out and ask a mob to form to recall Bronson. Please dont take the bait.

TMS, Ep 35: Credit card spend, JioPhone Next, markets and ethical hacking – Business Standard

Posted: at 9:40 pm

Indias credit card spending is back with a bang. It has risen consecutively for four months now. And, helped by the festive season, it crossed the Rs 80,000-crore mark in September. What is driving the overall surge? Is that indicative of a quick recovery for the larger economy? What are the lessons we can draw from this trend? Reliance Jios smartphone JioPhone Next was expected to be a disruptor that would help the company wrest control of a majority of the remaining 300 million 2G users in India. However, the phones price is a little higher than was expected, leaving analysts a tad sceptical about the smartphones potential.

Can JioPhone Next live up to its hype? A spectacular Samvat 2077 saw the Sensex playing down all the anxieties surrounding the pandemic and surging past the 62,000 mark for the first time. The Nifty also surpassed the 18,000 mark. As the year draws to a close, we take a look at how the markets fared this Samvat, which sectors sparkled on bourses, and what may be the road ahead for markets? Ethical hacking is quite a popular term now. Ethical hackers abound in real life and in fiction. But, what exactly is ethical hacking? How is it different from the other hacking we are hear about generally? Listen to these and more in todays Business Standard Morning Show podcast.

Pear Therapeutics Announces Milestone Decision by the American Medical Association CPT Editorial Panel to Clarify the Coding of Remote Therapeutic…

Posted: at 9:40 pm

(CPT is a registered trademark of the American Medical Association (AMA))

Changes include: 1) the addition of a Category I CPT code 989X6 to report Remote Therapeutic Monitoring device supply to monitor CBT; 2) revisions to the RTM-TMS guidelines to clarify reporting of CBT; and 3) the deletion of Category III CPT codes 0X47T (permanent code 0702T to report therapeutic monitoring of a standardized online digital CBT program) and 0X81T (permanent code 0703T to report the associated management services).

These revisions, which will go into effect as of January 1, 2023, will allow for the reporting of CBT monitoring services as part of RTM/RTM-TMS on a monthly basis. Meanwhile, Category I RTM/RTM-TMS CPT codes that describe services related to remote monitoring of therapy adherence and therapy response, will be available starting on January 1, 2022.

In some instances, providers may elect to use remote monitoring to help manage patients receiving remote therapy through digital medical tools like Pears FDA-authorized PDTs including reSET, reSET-O, and Somryst that deliver treatment of substance use disorder, opioid use disorder, and chronic insomnia, respectively, including the healthcare providers ability to remotely monitor therapeutic progress.

BOSTON, November 04, 2021--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pear Therapeutics, Inc. is pleased to share that the American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Editorial Panel has announced revisions to existing CPT codes clarifying the coding of remote therapeutic monitoring for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) services. These changes include: 1) the addition of CPT code 989X6 to report Remote Therapeutic Monitoring device supply to monitor CBT; 2) revisions to the Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) and Remote Therapeutic Monitoring Treatment Management Services (RTM-TMS) guidelines to clarify reporting of CBT; and 3) the deletion of Category III CPT codes 0X47T (permanent code 0702T to report therapeutic monitoring of a standardized online digital cognitive behavioral therapy program) and 0X81T (permanent code 0703T to report the associated management services).

Story continues

These changes have an effective date of January 2023 CPTs Summary of Panel Actions for September-October 2021 may be found here: https://www.ama-assn.org/system/files/september-october-2021-summary-of-panel-actions.pdf.

Meanwhile, Category 1 RTM and RTM-TMS CPT codes, which were first announced in 2020, will be available starting on January 1, 2022, to describe physician and other qualified healthcare professional work including monitoring therapy adherence and response. These codes may be applicable to the work of HCPs monitoring therapy adherence and therapy response with respect to Pears commercially available PDTs, reSET, reSET-O and Somryst for the treatment of substance use disorder, opioid use disorder, and chronic insomnia, respectively, including the healthcare providers ability to remotely monitor progress.

Appropriate billing and coding for healthcare services are the providers responsibility and should always be based on the patients clinical condition, services provided, and payer guidelines. A comprehensive review of all recent changes related to remote therapeutic monitoring is recommended.

"AMAs clarifications and addition to codes describing services related to clinician monitoring of FDA-authorized medical devices delivering Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are another significant milestone in providing coding for healthcare providers across the United States," said Corey McCann, M.D., Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Pear Therapeutics. "Ultimately, RTM Category 1 codes will provide additional CPT coding options for healthcare providers when using digital health technologies."

On October 29, 2021, AMA released the CPT Editorial Summary of Panel Actions (https://www.ama-assn.org/system/files/september-october-2021-summary-of-panel-actions.pdf), which reflects the discussion at the most recent CPT Editorial Panel meeting in September 2021. CPT coding serves as a uniform nomenclature used for medical services to improve harmonization of reporting, increase the accuracy of medical services and procedures, and to improve efficiency across healthcare. CPT terminology is the most widely accepted medical language for public and private health insurance programs. The CPT Editorial Panel is tasked with maintaining an open process that convenes meetings to solicit input from stakeholders across healthcare.

AMA announced their CPT Editorial Panel accepted the addition of code 989X6 to report remote therapeutic monitoring device supply to monitor cognitive behavioral therapy; the revision of the Remote Therapeutic Monitoring Services guidelines and the Remote Therapeutic Monitoring Treatment Management Services guidelines (CPT code family 98975, 98976, 98977, 98980, and 98981) to clarify reporting of cognitive behavioral therapy; and the deletion of codes 0X47T, 0X81T (now permanent codes 0702T and 0703T).

PDTs are a new therapeutic class that use software to treat serious disease. Like traditional medicines, PDTs are developed in a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) compliant environment, tested in randomized controlled trials to demonstrate safety and effectiveness, evaluated for authorization by regulators like FDA, and used under the supervision of a prescribing clinician. Pears PDTs are designed to collect real world data for use by prescribing clinicians and for population health management by payers and health systems.

30 days, life-changing results: The new treatment available to veterans in the Ohio Valley – WTRF

Posted: at 9:40 pm

HARRISON COUNTY, Ohio (WTRF) When veterans return home from combat, sometimes theyre left with more than memories. That can be a physical injury or a mental scar that we cant see, but wont go away.

But, what happens when a veteran feels like theres no help left?

22 veterans a day commit suicide.

Inside a small room in Harrison County, theyre taking the first steps to reduce that number.

Were trained in the military to suck it up and drive on and its a good concept in battle.

However, its not always when it comes to readjusting from combat to the comforts of home.

30 days. Thats a very short amount of time to get the rest of your life back.

The dull humming of the TMS machines inside a small room at the Harrison County Sheriffs Office is a welcome noise to area veterans.

What theyre doing is kinda pressing control alt delete in the brain and were re-booting it. Were slowing the neurons down or speeding them so that both sides of the brain are working at their optimum level.

Its called transcranial magnetic stimulation and its helping veterans with PTSD, brain injuries, and much more.

TMS works with a magnet. Those wishing to receive the treatment get an initial EEG to test how their brain waves are functioning. Then, that number is sent to a treatment center in California. The time and intensity of the treatments is adjusted based on each persons unique brain rhythm with guidance from the treatment center.

About 35 veterans have completed the program in Harrison County. It takes 30 minutes a day, five days a week for six weeks for a total of 30 treatments.

I felt a tingle go down my hands and Ive never been able to close my hands for years and years and right then I closed a complete fist without any problem.

Terry Fabry of Smithfield is a Vietnam veteran. When 7News spoke to him, he only had one more session left to finish his TMS treatment. Before it helped improve his life, Fabry had trouble sleeping and was in pain most of the time.

When I was over there I fell down a mountain and I was carrying a radio and I had my M-79, which carries 68 rounds and it was a lot of weight. When I fell down the mountain I fell probably 20, 30 feet and I rolled into a cave and screwed up my neck, my lower back and my ankle. Everything from that time hasnt been good.

Fabry said he saw results after the first session.

I am proud of what I did. I did what I thought I should do at the time and Ive just had to live with the aftermath.

Roy Stewart is a Vietnam veteran who lives in St. Clairsville.

He said hes struggled mentally for years, especially with sleep after his wife died. His stepson, also a veteran, sustained a head injury during service.

I am sleeping better. I havent quite got all the way yet, because Im starting my third treatment now, but its worth it because I feel better and my stepsons doing better.

Spend time with the group that frequently gathers at the Harrison County Sheriffs Office and theyll tell you how much TMS changed their lives.

Its not just for veterans. The treatment is FDA approved for headaches and anxiety.

There are around 50 of these TMS machines in the world, and two of them reside in Harrison County. People from 11-years-old all the way to 93-years-old have gotten the treatments.

I feel like this has made me more at ease. Its made me more comfortable.

Dirk Harkins sets up these machines five days a week.He works so hard to help others because he knows how TMS can change a life.

I found myself in a high-speed chase with local law enforcement agencies and I pulled over and tried suicide by cop at that time.

In this Digital Exclusive, hear veteran Dirk Harkins describe the difficult journey after an injury and PTSD diagnosis that lead him to TMS treatments and how they changed his life.

Harkins served in the Army in the 82nd Airborne and was injured in 2007 when a Humvee he was riding in was hit with an IED. He suffered back, neck and hip injuries, was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and PTSD. Harkins returned home and was never the same.

He was stuck in a days-long depression, after years of struggles with opioids and alcohol and Harkins recalls he was at the end of his rope.

After seeking help at the V.A. and told to come back in a few days, he found himself in that encounter with police and eventually in jail. There Harkins called his friend, Ohio State Senator Frank Hoagland, who got him into TMS treatments in Texas for six months.

For 12 years I was having a headache every single day at one level or another I would wake up with a headache. Throughout the week I would probably have two to three maybe four migraines where they would put me down and Id have to rely on medication and sleep to try and get rid of these migraine headaches, but after the fourth treatment I woke up for the first time in 12 years and didnt have a headache. If that was all that happened to me I would of come back to Ohio excited, you know what I mean, but it started doing other things. Its started giving me clarity. It gave me mental focus and energy and started giving me my life back.

He now channels that energy into getting more TMS treatments to veterans in the Buckeye State.Working with Senator Hoagland and local sheriffs departments, they want to make sure its available to anyone, anywhere who needs it.

Harkins said hes already began that initial EEG on several veterans and first responders in Noble County to set up the next treatment site.

Its gonna start right here in the Ohio Valley and its going to spread out across the state.

If youre a veteran or first responder and would like to learn more about TMS and what it does, you can call Dirk Harkins at 740-491-7125.

Yakko, Wakko, and Dot Return: ‘Animaniacs’ Season 2 Mayhem Arrives! – Animation World Network

Posted: at 9:40 pm

Its zanier, brainier, and insanier. Warner siblings Yakko, Wakko, and Dot have returned for the brand-new Season 2 of Steven Spielbergs rebooted cartoon comedy series, Animaniacs, now airing on Hulu. The wild and wacky animated variety show originally ran for five seasons before wrapping in 1998. Over two decades later, Warner Bros. has brought back the Emmy Award-winning series, with Family Guys Wellesley Wild serving as showrunner and executive producer along with Spielberg and Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness Gabe Swarr.

Other executive producers include President of Warner Bros. Animation Sam Register as well as Amblin Television Co-Presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. The new seasons antics range from historical quips and bits, to riffs on Netflix and outer space excursions. Season 2s 13 episodes also feature previously rejected Animaniacs characters and, according to Swarr, are filled with even more earworm songs that viewers just won't be able to get out of their heads.

The best part about working on this show is being able to go anywhere and do anything, says the EP. We're so thankful and grateful for this opportunity. And Steven has been our guiding light.

But when first approached about rebooting the series, Swarr initially declined.

I actually said no a couple times to doing the show because I was really worried about the fans and if we would do a good job or not, he explains. Animaniacs has had such a loyal following, so I was very apprehensive.

Even though Swarr says he was part of the Ren & Stimpy camp during the shows original run, he was very familiar with the popularity of the series and didnt want to do wrong by the fans. He finally got on board after realizing that rebooting Animaniacs gave him a long-awaited opportunity that he likely wouldnt get again.

I love variety shows, says Swarr. I always wanted to do a variety show like Monty Python or The Muppet Show. But its so hard to do that in animation and I figured this was going to be my only opportunity to ever do it. I tried to pitch a variety show a bunch of times and it was always a really hard sell because there's never a built-in audience. And this is the one time where you could do it with a built-in audience. Plus, I'm kind of smart-assy too, which is the perfect attitude for Animaniacs.

Rebooting a series in 2020 thats known for its unapologetic stabs at pop-culture certainly was a hefty task, and Swarr says it took a lot of research for the team to initially get their footing. We went back and watched nearly every episode from the original series, he shares. There are definitely certain things that aren't as woke anymore, and we didn't want to lean into that at all. But we also wanted to make commentary on everything we could.

From streaming subscriptions to Gladiator film quotes, Animaniacs touches not just on current topics, but older references for older viewers as well. Afterall, just like the original series, the bits arent just for the kids.It is walking that fine line, confirms Swarr. The original show was set up to be for family viewing. It wasnt just for kids, and it wasn't just for adults. In the beginning of the production on the reboot, we were brought in and told, Okay, here's the show, and your target audience is 10 to 25. Thats a wide range and its amazing getting to put jokes in a show that go over kids heads, but then also keep all the slapstick for the younger audience.

He adds, Were always straddling between those two features. But finding that balance not only makes the show better, but its also where the show needs to be.

Though most of the jokes are new - or jokes about doing worse versions of old jokes from the original series - the animation should feel extremely familiar. Swarr says that he and the team took great care in producing animation as close to the original as possible.

We wanted to style the new series off the best of the original, and as the original show went on, the animators got better and better at drawing the characters, Swarr reveals. Certain studios Warner Bros. had worked with in the past really stood out to us. My favorite one was the Japanese studio called TMS, Tokyo Movie Shinsha. I had a chance to interview one of the directors from that studio who worked on the original Animaniacs and got to ask every question I could. After talking with them, it was very obvious the studio had been doing their own thing and their own take on these characters - simplifying their anatomy, changing the proportions a little bit, making them more streamlined. So thats what we did, looking at how TMS interpreted the Warner Bros. models, and went from there.

Leaning into the classic hand-drawn, 2D style, Swarr says their team set up the visuals to be as exactly like the original as we could, avoiding modern tricks like After Effects blurs.

He continues, We're really trying to show off that original look and do it in the most traditional way possible.

But, like any good variety show, tradition hasnt stopped Swarr and the production team from adding in a few visual surprises in the second season.

We go to a lot more places visually in this season than in Season 1, he says, careful not to give too much away for the sake of surprise. This show is almost like a playground where I can just play visually with different mediums of animation and animation styles. We definitely took advantage of that in this season.

Animaniacs was also renewed for a third season shortly after the first season released, and Swarr says its been a blessing as far as way the show is staffed and produced. Season 3 is our first chance to really react to what the audience thought about the first season, because the first and second seasons were all done at the same time he says. Which is why we didn't want to lose our first season writers and artists. That's always what you're always up against with TV. And the DNA of the show really changes if you can't keep the same crew. You'll lose the tone. That's the hardest part. So, aside from wanting the show to continue, that was a big reason we were really excited to be picked up for more seasons so early.

Now, Swarr and the rest of the crew have their fingers crossed that the Animaniacs hijinks continue with a Season 4 pick-up. Wed really love to keep everyone on board and keep going, says Swarr. All the writers are amazing, and everyone just comes up with so many great ideas. And then hopefully, with the fourth season, we will have some ideas from audiences' reactions to Season 2.
