Company Announcement, Inside information, Helsinki, 15 December 2021 at 3 PM (EET)

Nexstim Announces Results of the Pilot Study in Chronic Pain Treatment at Helsinki University Hospital

Nexstim Plc (NXTMH:HEX, NXTMS:STO) ("Nexstim" or "Company") reports that treatment of the five patients of the pilot study on the use of accelerated iTBS protocol in treatment of chronic neuropathic pain with the Nexstim NBT System at Helsinki University Hospital has been completed. No serious adverse events or clinically meaningful pain relief was observed in any of the patients.

In the pilot study, the potential effectiveness of an accelerated iTBS protocol was tested in 5 patients, all of whom were suffering from therapy resistant, chronic neuropathic pain. The patients had at least a 2-year history with their condition and had had several treatment attempts. This included conventional 10Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeting the motor cortex or other areas of the brain which had not resulted in clinically meaningful pain relief.

In the accelerated iTBS treatment protocol the number of stimulation sessions normally provided over more than 2 weeks was given in 3 days.

Mikko Karvinen, CEO of Nexstim, comments: We thank the Helsinki University Hospital team in conducting this pilot study under the difficult COVID-19 environment. Despite this small patient population of therapy resistant patients not showing excess pain relief to the conventional rTMS treatments, we are happy that Helsinki University Hospital has successfully used Nexstim NBT system in pain therapy for a long time already, with about half of the patients obtaining clinically meaningful pain relief. We will continue to try to find new ways of helping this group of patients also in the future.

With the highest number of reviews from enterprise customers, FourKites was recognized as a leader in market presence, customer satisfaction and company vision

CHICAGO, Dec. 15, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FourKites, the worlds leading real-time supply chain visibility platform, today announced that it has been named the #1 supply chain visibility software provider based on overall market presence by peer-to-peer software review company G2 in its Winter 2022 Grid Supply Chain Visibility Software report. The report rates products and sellers based on reviews from the user community, as well as data aggregated from online sources and social networks. After being named a Leader in the 2021 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Real-Time Transportation Visibility Platforms1 earlier this year, G2s Winter Report, representing the voice of the customer, affirms FourKites as the market-leading real-time supply chain visibility platform.

"At its heart, our leading market presence reflects our status as a global leader in the growing supply chain visibility market, said FourKites founder and CEO Mathew Elenjickal. The G2 Winter Report is an affirmation of our vision and ability to serve all industries across every mode, globally especially at a time when supply chain visibility has never been more critical."

Based on more than 180 FourKites customer reviews, highlights from the report include:

96% of respondents rate FourKites 4 or 5 stars

Nearly 100 reviews from FourKites customers were provided by enterprise customers more than any company in the report, and over 10% more than the closest competitor

Customers strongly support the companys vision, with 96% reporting that they believe FourKites is heading in the right direction

Of the leaders, FourKites has the most diverse mix of industries represented

The customer feedback in the G2 report aligns with FourKites recognition from Gartner earlier this year; out of 14 vendors, FourKites was the only supply chain visibility platform positioned in the Leaders quadrant with the highest Completeness of Vision.

What customers are saying on G2:

"FourKites is a pleasure to work with 10x better than their competition! [I like the] quick and easy set up process. They also help with everything every step of the way. They really make everything painless."

FourKites is invaluable. I love the fact that we are not only able to view load status in real-time, but also have the ability to receive these status updates into our TMS. This saves countless hours on the administrative/manual track and trace.

FourKites is a simple tool to use with lots of information that's carefully formatted so as not to be overwhelming to the users. It's also ever changing to meet business needs.

FourKites is a great tool that simplifies and speeds up operations. [The fact that Dynamic YardSM gives us] the ability to track and quickly look up the status of equipment has been beneficial. "Lost trailers" in the yard are being caught right away instead of left growing roots for weeks. The ability to designate trailer status and condition gives you the ability to view real-time yard reports anytime you want. This helps to reduce the need to bring in additional raw materials because of paperwork errors and allows the warehouse to shift their work focus quickly. Yard drivers have found the system very easy to pick up, and like that, it tells them where to find each trailer. For new drivers, it dramatically reduces the time from training to productivity.

The FourKites platform is straightforward, easy to use. It gives real-time information on the truck/vessel location based on GPS coordinates. The reports are helpful as they contain detailed information about CO2 emissions, tracking consistency, and much more. If you want to have end-to-end visibility and know at all times where your products are, I recommend FourKites.

Market leader delivers industry-first solutions for every modeFourKites pioneered real-time transportation visibility in 2014, and is now leading the industry into a new era where global supply chains are powered and optimized by real-time visibility data and machine learning. Amid another year of constant disruptions, FourKites doubled-down on its customer-driven innovation model, with more than 65 new features resulting from customer feedback. These industry-first capabilities help FourKites users track shipments end to end across all modes and geographies, from sourcing to manufacturing to final destination.

These innovations included the patented Smart Forecasted Arrival (SFA) that provides frequent and highly accurate ETAs even for untrackable freight in transit; Dynamic ETA for Ocean; Dynamic ETA for Air; a major upgrade to Dynamic YardSM; its new Order Intelligence Hub (OIH), which provides a single-pane-of-glass view of the entire lifecycle of every order; and powerful new collaboration features including Instant Messaging, an updated CarrierLink mobile app for drivers, and enhancements to Partner Hub, its self-service, secure GPS onboarding solution for brokers and carriers.

BrainsWay Announces Publication of Deep TMS Trial Results for Reduction of Heavy Drinking in Alcohol-Dependent Subjects – Yahoo Finance

Posted: December 13, 2021 at 2:06 am

Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind Pilot Study Evaluated Deep TMS Treatment in Reducing Alcohol Consumption and Craving for Adults with Alcohol Use Disorder

Study Findings to be Featured Today at Brain Stimulation Conference Symposium

BURLINGTON, Mass. and JERUSALEM, Dec. 09, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- BrainsWay Ltd. (NASDAQ & TASE: BWAY) (BrainsWay or the Company), a global leader in the advanced noninvasive treatment of brain disorders, announced the publication in the scientific journal Biological Psychiatry of a new randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial assessing the safety and efficacy of the Companys proprietary Deep TMS System for adults with alcohol use disorder (AUD). A presentation of the results of the study will be given today at the 4th International Brain Stimulation Conference in Charleston, South Carolina.

The pilot study analyzed data from 46 subjects and revealed encouraging efficacy data relative to placebo in adults with AUD. The primary endpoint of the trial was the reduction in percentage of heavy drinking days (pHDD) over the twelve-week period after the Deep TMS treatment. A heavy drinking day was defined as a day during which four or more drinks were consumed for women, or five or more drinks for men. Subjects in the active Deep TMS group had an average of 2.9 pHDD during the three-month follow-up period compared to 10.6 pHDD in the placebo, a clinically meaningful and statistically significant difference. The H7 Coil is designed to target the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), structures both associated with AUD.

We are excited about the results of this feasibility study of Deep TMS for patients suffering from alcohol use disorder, said Christopher Boyer, Vice President of Global Marketing for BrainsWay. Like many other mental health disorders, there have been a number of reports showing that the global pandemic has exacerbated the prevalence of the alcohol use disorder. With limited treatment options for this life-altering disorder, it is promising to see that Deep TMS therapy may have a meaningful role in addressing this serious worldwide health issue.

Story continues

Previous studies suggest that lowering alcohol consumption for several weeks among patients suffering from AUD can initiate recovery of executive and general cognitive functioning, as well as structural and functional modifications throughout the brain. As such, the reduction in consumption induced by active treatment suggests that Deep TMS may be a powerful tool in benefitting those suffering from AUD.

While we are gaining accumulating knowledge of brain circuits implicated in addictions, it is exciting to present these promising results achieved with Deep TMS in AUD patients said Prof. Abraham Zangen, Head of the Brain Stimulation and Behavior Lab and the Chair of the PsychoBiology Brain Program at Ben-Gurion University and a scientific consultant for and member of the board of directors of BrainsWay. This feasibility study, which also included brain imaging measures, is a first step in more fully understanding the potential benefits of Deep TMS for patients suffering from AUD.

Prof. Zangen will present the findings of the study, along with data on Deep TMS in other addictions including smoking addiction, as part of a featured symposium being held today on novel brain stimulation treatments at the Brain Stimulation Conference, a gathering of prominent researchers and global market leaders in the neuroscience space.

About the StudyThe randomized, controlled, double-blind study was conducted at Ben-Gurion University and the Soroka Medical Center, Beer Sheva, Israel. Data from 46 subjects who completed the acute phase of the treatment course out of 51 eligible subjects who were enrolled into the study and initiated treatment was analyzed. Participants were divided into two groups receiving either 20 sessions of Deep TMS with the H7 Coil or placebo stimulation over the course of three months, with five sessions per week during the first three weeks (acute treatment) and five maintenance sessions during the three months of follow-up. Results revealed that the reduction in the percent of heavy drinking days in the active Deep TMS group were significantly greater than that of the placebo group (p = 0.037). Likewise, the reduction in craving levels, a secondary outcome, was significantly greater in active participants versus sham (p = 0.01).

In addition, functional MRI performed before and after the acute treatment revealed that active stimulation modified the connectivity between the ACC and the mPFC as well as the caudate, which may indicate an increased ability to overcome alcohol cravings.

For both the active and placebo groups, treatments were administered following symptom provocation which was tailored to the subjects specific alcoholic beverage preferences. The primary endpoint was the difference between the groups in the pHDD reduction, as measured during the three-month follow-up period.

Additional evaluations included modifications to structural and functional brain imaging measures. Participants were active alcohol consumers who consumed alcohol in the past month but not in the five days prior to the first MRI scan and/or the first treatment Deep TMS treatment session. During the acute treatment phase, in which relapse to alcohol drinking was prohibited for safety reasons, urine samples were collected daily for alcohol biomarkers. During the follow-up phase, urine samples were collected only during the Deep TMS maintenance treatment visits. Consumption and craving were assessed using standard questionnaires.

The BrainsWay Deep TMS H7 Coil was used in the study and included a placebo element situated within the helmet to facilitate patient and provider blinding. The placebo element produces an acoustic artifact and scalp sensations similar to those achieved with active stimulation from the Deep TMS H7 Coil, albeit with a negligible induced electric field that is insufficient to lead to a therapeutic effect.

No serious adverse events or side effects were reported in the study.

About Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)The most prevalent substance use disorder globally, alcohol use disorder (AUD) encompasses the collection of clinical conditions associated with an inability to cease or control alcohol consumption including alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, alcohol addiction, and alcoholism. As of 2018, there were more than 280 million people worldwide with AUD, and in 2019, 14.1 million adults were living with AUD in the United States. Factors contributing to developing AUD include alcohol misuse (e.g., binge drinking and heavy drinking), drinking at an early age, genetics and family history, and mental health conditions such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The economic burden of AUD in the US in 2010 was calculated at $249 billion per year.

NMSU students help make Las Cruces hotel one of the top-ranked in nation – Las Cruces Sun-News

Posted: at 2:06 am

Carlos Andres Lpez| New Mexico State University

LAS CRUCES - One of the top-rated Marriott hotels in the nation sits on the New Mexico State University campus and serves as a career-launching ground for many NMSU graduates and students.

Three years after opening, the Courtyard by Marriott Las Cruces at NMSU has become the No. 1 Courtyard property in New Mexico and now ranks among the top 1 percent of all Courtyard locations in the United States, according to guest service scores tabulated by Marriott.

Amy Miller, general manager of the Courtyard at NMSU, attributes the hotels success to her dedicated staff of 60, a group of workers that includes 10 or so current or former NMSU students at any given time.

I didnt realize we were almost among the top 15 hotels in the nation until late October, Miller said. So, we are working really hard to get into the top 10 by the end of the year.Miller said the hotels rankings, based entirely on feedback from guests, are impressive given that the property opened a few months before the coronavirus pandemic hit and continued to operate amid a challenging economic climate.

Photos from NMSU: Mortarboards with a message: NMSU Class of 2020 finally gets commencement ceremony

Even with the uncertainty of last year, Miller added, the hotel managed to strengthen its ties to NMSUs School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management, housed in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences.

Were proud that even during this year-and-a-half of COVID-19, we were able to employ and pay internships to NMSU HRTM students, Miller said.

Miller said the NMSU students employed by the hotel, either as interns or full-time employees, carry out a wide range of duties every day.

Im impressed with their background knowledge and understanding of the hotel and restaurant industry, she said of her employees who went through the HRTM program, and their understanding of customer service, brand standards, finances and budgets, costs, expenses, profits and so forth.

HRTM Director Jean Hertzman said the hotels guest service ratings confirm the success of its partnership with the HRTM program.

We nurture our students spirit of hospitality and the interpersonal and business skills needed throughout our curriculum and program activities, Hertzman said. We are proud that this carries into their work at the hotel and provides such wonderful service to its guests, many of whom also have ties to the NMSU community.

Like Miller, current HRTM student Yulisa Bueno believes the hotels success is directly tied to staffers like herself and others who work in unison.

It tells me that we have a strong team, said Bueno, who has worked at the Courtyard for two years and currently serves as the hotels bistro manager.

Bueno added that working alongside her HRTM classmates makes for better overall teamwork and helps increase customer satisfaction.

Our guest service scores are pretty encouraging and make us feel good overall that we are doing what we can to keep this hotel going as efficiently as possible, she said.

Kat Voelz, who graduated from the HRTM program in May, said the program helped prepare for her current job as the hotels sales coordinator.

Learning sales is something that Im excited to do because it is a little bit different, said Voelz, who has worked at the hotel for nearly a year.

Voelz said she is confident the hotel will continue to receive high customer service scores.

I think were going to continue to improve until we are the absolute best that we can be, she said, and then continue to improve past that.

Fabian Esquivel, who graduated from the HRTM program in 2019, said working at the hotel during the pandemic was challenging but filled with valuable lessons. He said he saw the hotel go from full in its early days to nearly empty at the height of the pandemic and then bounce back.

My biggest takeaway is not being afraid to take on those lessons and not being afraid to communicate, said Esquivel, who now serves as the hotels assistant general manager. My other big takeaway, and probably my favorite, is to keep looking forward.

The Courtyard by Marriott Las Cruces at NMSU is part of a growing network of hotels in New Mexico managed by Total Management Systems, an Albuquerque company that entered into a partnership with NMSU to develop the hotel and help teach the next generation of hospitality leaders.

Miller said HRTM graduates who work for the company can participate in the TMS Leadership Program, which aims to help employees grow their careers with TMS.

Total Management Systems welcomes HRTM graduates who want to advance their careers in other properties, said Miller, who was recently promoted as an onboarding and Marriott peer adviser for the company.

The evolution of a bitter taste receptor gene in primates – DocWire News

Posted: December 7, 2021 at 5:58 am

This article was originally published here

Chem Senses. 2021 Jan 1;46:bjab049. doi: 10.1093/chemse/bjab049.

ABSTRACT

Bitter taste perception is critical to prevent animals from ingesting potentially harmful substances. The aim of this study was to characterize the evolution of T2R4 and test the hypothesis that different regions of the T2R gene are subject to disparate selective pressures, with extracellular regions (ECs) being erratic while transmembrane (TMs) and intracellular regions (ICs) being constrained. Thus, we examined the selective pressures acting on T2R4 and its different regions in 37 primates, and discovered that T2R4 and ECs were subject to neutral evolution and purifying selection, respectively, whereas both TMs and ICs showed purifying selection, as suggested by the hypothesis. We attribute this result to the relatively conservative property of T2R4 gene and the limited number of bitter tastants that T2R4 can respond to. Furthermore, we found that positive selection had acted on the first loop of extracellular regions (EL1). In contrast, the second loop (EL2) and transmembrane region-3, -6, -7 (TM367) were subject to purifying selection, and the third loop (EL3) was subject to neutral evolution. This discovery is probably because EL2, EL3, and TMs play a crucial role in the ligand-binding process, and EL1 is involved in the tastant recognition process. We further tested whether the of T2R4 differs among species with different diets and found that a specialized diet affected the evolution of T2R4. Feeding habits, fewer T2Rs, and a dietary shift may account for the results. This study can help to uncover the evolution of T2Rs during the primate evolutionary course.

Stanford depression treatment nearly 80% effective – The Stanford Daily

Posted: December 3, 2021 at 5:13 am

Stanford neuromodulation therapy (SNT), an experimental, accelerated version of magnetic pulse brain stimulation developed at Stanford, may provide a revolutionary treatment for severe depression, according to researchers at Stanfords School of Medicine.

The researchers optimism comes on the heels of an Oct. 29 study in which the treatment was found to have induced remission in nearly 80% of participants. The study tested the efficacy of SNT on patients with long-term, moderate to severe depression who were also treatment resistant, meaning that they had unsuccessfully tried several other conventional forms of treatment. For many of these patients, SNT was the first treatment that successfully alleviated their depression in a significant, lasting way, researchers said.

My brain has been rebooted, said one patient treated with SNT who asked to remain anonymous due to concerns regarding the stigmatization of mental health treatment. Its like this cloud of depression has been lifted from me.

SNT is an adaptation of an already existing, noninvasive form of brain stimulation called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS delivers magnetic pulses to specific locations within the brain, activating neural circuits that show decreased activity during depressive episodes. According to researchers, while TMS has been approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2008, its efficacy is limited, and it can take weeks for patients to show improvement.

SNT differs from TMS in several key ways. First, SNT relies on functional neuroimaging to map out the brain, allowing researchers to pinpoint where to deliver magnetic pulses. Second, SNT deploys an especially efficient stimulation pattern that relies on fewer pulses to change neural circuits. Third and most crucially SNT dramatically increases the rate at which patients receive brain stimulation. While TMS involves one brain stimulation session per day for 36 weekdays, SNT requires only 10 stimulation sessions per day over a five-day period.

There have been a lot of innovations in the TMS technology space, said Nolan Williams, the lead investigator in the Oct. 29 study. The question we tried to answer was, how do we take what we now understand and reengineer TMS? And thats what we did.

Williams, who is the Director of the Stanford Brain Stimulation Lab and an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, said that the research team plans to submit the data to the FDA, which has already deemed SNT a breakthrough therapy. Williams said that the timeline for the treatments deployment will depend on whether or not it receives FDA approval, although he is optimistic about its potential to treat a broad range of neurological disorders.

One application [of SNT] is for people who are in psychiatric emergencies, Williams said. Weve been doing this in obsessive compulsive disorder and borderline personality disorder. We think that this is a brain tool.

SNTs versatility makes it a much more compelling alternative to other treatments, said Kristin Raj, the co-chief of Stanford Mood Disorders and chief of the Stanford Bipolar Clinic. As one of the researchers in the study, Raj said that the studys results demonstrate that SNT is far more effective than medication, which often produces diminishing returns after the first few doses. Moreover, SNT has none of the side effects that come with other popular treatments for depression like electroconvulsive shock therapy or ketamine therapy, which are still viewed as controversial.

Ive had many patients tell me how much hope it gives them to hear about SNT, Raj said.

Still, despite overwhelmingly positive results, SNT is not a miracle cure.

Researchers have said that not all patients respond in the same way to the treatment while some patients are still in remission years after being treated, others have reported relapse after only a few weeks.

Most individuals fall somewhere in the middle, said psychiatry and behavioral sciences professor Brandon Bentzley, who offered one hypothesis as to why responses to SNT might vary.

What were doing in SNT is trying to move the brain from the default mode network, which is dominant during depression, to the central executive network, Bentzley said, another researcher in the study. My speculation is that different people have a different propensity to shift back to the default mode network.

The question of how to extend the positive effects of SNT to all patients, Bentzley said, remains an active research focus.

David Carreon, another researcher for the study and a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, said that he has already adapted SNT to his private practice, albeit without the functional neuroimaging techniques used in the Oct. 29 study. While the treatment is not as effective as the full version of SNT, it is still showing success in patients he said.

While SNT might offer hope for depression treatment, the stigma that hangs over mental health issues remains dangerous, according to the same patient who requested anonymity. The patient, who is a physician, said that this stigma is especially prevalent within the healthcare industry, which takes an almost militaristic approach to denying the existence of mental health issues in its workforce.

You would think that the healthcare system, since its so good at treating others, would be better at providing treatment for physicians, the patient said. But its more like, Everyone else has problems, but we dont.

Carreon said that many of his patients, including those who have gone into remission, have refused interviews with media outlets looking to report on SNT due to this stigma.

People dont want to be on national TV as the guy who was depressed, Carreon said. Even if it was in the past.

The stigma surrounding mental health has real-world dangers; according to Enas Dakwar, a clinical psychologist at the Vaden Health Center, social stigma prevents many individuals from seeking support for mental health. This is exacerbated by the fact that many individuals with depression are high-functioning, Dakwar said, which can lead them to try to fix their depressive state on their own. Without proper support, these individuals often fail, taking them deeper into the rabbit hole of depression, Dakwar said.
