Local mental health clinic offers innovative depression treatment – The Oxford Eagle – Oxford Eagle
Posted: June 30, 2022 at 9:18 pm
Right Tracks clinical team began researching manufacturers that offered the devices needed toprovide TMS treatment. They ultimately landed onBrainsWay, a global technology company that produces TMS magnets that Dr. Pannel said are more unique and specific to patients.
The treatment sessions with BrainsWay devices are also relatively short, clocking in at 18 minutes versus 40 or more minutes with other devices.
When we were first looking into TMS, I felt that time was very, very important for people, he said. Ifwe could save people time and make it more efficient for them, we definitely wantedto do that.
The ease of receiving TMS, Dr.Pannel said, is one of the treatment options advantages. Thesessions are completely outpatient and do not require anesthesia or having someone come along to drive before or after the appointment.
A common concern of potential patients is the procedure itself. Dr. Pannel acknowledged that the treatmentin which a padded helmet is fitted to the patients headlooks strange for those unfamiliar.
For most people, TMS is a very new and unique process. Its always interesting for people attheir first session, but people adjust to it very quickly, he said.
After deciding that the treatment is appropriate, a Right Track psychiatrist works with the patient to tailor the TMS to them and their needs. This is done during a half-hour brain mapping session, during which the provider uses the TMS machine to examine the patientsbrain like another doctor might use x-rays.
Regular 20-minute TMS appointments, which are overseen by one ofthe clinicspsychiatrists or nurse practitioners, begin the next day and typically last for about three to four months.
Once someone begins receiving TMS, family and friends often notice initial improvements. Then, from session five to 10, patients typically notice improvements in mood, sleep and depressive symptoms.
By the end of treatment, Dr. Pannel said, the frequency, severity and intensity of depressive symptoms decrease overall in most patients.
A majority of people Ive treated go into remission and really improve, he said. The success of TMS has even changed Dr.Pannels outlook as a psychiatrist.

The CDO Stack: How to Make the Most of Treasury Management Systems – Commercial Property Executive
Posted: at 9:18 pm
As a self-described lifelong learner, I consider the constant flow of conversations with clients and colleagues about their operational challenges to be one of the many great parts of my job.
Having done this for more than three decades, Ive dealt with enough challenges to offer an informed view about the right solution or best path forward. Interestingly, thats not the case with a treasury management system (TMS). Not that there hasnt been a need for what TMSs have to offer but my clients have tended to support treasury processes with brute-force effort and spreadsheets.
Whats happening with treasury management? During those three decades, I have almost never had a client ask about how to automate treasury processes. But in the past month, no fewer than than five clients have asked for an overview of the TMS landscape, the major offerings, what they do and how to differentiate them. Thankfully, I work with colleagues who specialize in such things and know the answers to these questions. And given my role, I get to listen and learn. Assuming that there are more companies out there with the same question, allow me to share what Ive learned.
First, as with so many solutions, understanding what you want the system to do, and in what priority, is important before you attempt to understand your options. As a quick primer, the major categories of functionality that TMSs provide are: cash and liquidity management, cash and hedge accounting, trade execution and controls, dealing (which includes foreign exchange (FX), money markets, debt facilities, derivatives and investments), management reporting and risk management.
Importantly, TMSs also typically manage interactions with banks, including statement receipt and recordation, payments, and foreign exchange/investment trades and transactions. These services also include bank relationship management, such as opening and closing accounts, changes in signatories and fee analytics.
There are a limited number of solutions in the market that can be stratified in three broad categoriesentry-level, mid-market and top-tier. For most in the real estate industry, entry-level and mid-market solutions will meet your needs. If youre wondering how to think about the different levels in the strata, heres a good rule of thumb: Top-tier solutions are generally aimed at Fortune 100 companies with complex financial operations, many integrations to manage, a complex enterprise resource planning (ERP) environment and where the benefits justify system and implementation complexity. This description fits relatively few companies in the commercial real estate industry.
Mid-market solutions are geared to companies that have complex financial requirements but dont have complexity in ERP systems. These companies are looking for strong end-to-end automation and reduced manual work. They likely have FX and corresponding heading requirements and need robust data visibility. This is perhaps the most competitive segment of the available TMS market and likely the sweet spot for most mid-size to large real estate companies.
Entry-level solutions are exactly what they sound like and are a viable option for many real estate companies that have only domestic operations and are looking to get treasury out of spreadsheets. These systems are generally SaaS, turn-key, and focused on helping with cash management, payment management and integrations with multiple banks. For many CRE organizations, the step from entry-level to mid-market systems is predicated on requirements to deal with FX and short-term investments.
I hope that primer is useful. If youre struggling with understanding your cash position or liquidity and find that your processes are highly manual, you might find that a TMS is a valuable investment.
John DAngelo is a managing director with Deloitte and is the firms real estate solutions leader, designing solutions to address client challenges and push the industry forward. With over 30 years of experience as a management consultant to the global real estate industry, John has helped some of the biggest names in real estate leverage technology and use data to optimize and transform their operations.

Cinematographer Bianca Cline on Filming ‘Marcel the Shell With Shoes On’ – The Mary Sue
Posted: at 9:18 pm
They say that big things come in little packages, and thats especially true for Dean Fleischer Camp and Jenny Slates stop-motion character Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. The tender little anthropomorphic shell hit the internet in 2010 with a series of short films and quickly became a YouTube sensation. Now, more than a decade later, Marcel stars in his first feature film, directed by Fleischer Camp with Slate returning to voice the shell. The film is currently in theaters across the country.
But bringing Marcels miniature world to life was no easy feat. We talked to the films cinematographer, Bianca Cline, about the challenges of combining stop-motion with live-action filmmaking. As one of the few trans cinematographers working today, Cline considers it important to tell her story to a new generation of queer and trans filmmakers. She believes her trans identity is not incidental to her creativity, but fuels her practice as an artist. Clines credits include Murder Among the Mormons, Belly of the Beast, and Oreo Proud Parent, a short film for Oreos Pride campaign.
The Mary Sue: How did you get involved with Marcel the Shell with Shoes On? Were you a fan of the shorts or was it new to you?
Bianca Cline: It was totally new, Id never heard of Marcel before, and I got the script through my agent and as soon as I read it I was hooked. Although I will say, there actually wasnt a script when it came there was finished audio, all the dialogue, sound effects, music was all finished and then there were storyboards to go along with it, so I watched it that way. It was kind of like a mini movie, it was a very unique experience for coming to a film but a really lovely one.
TMS: what challenges do you face shooting a stop-motion film? The process itself seems so painstaking.
BC: The film is very, its quite unique, so the process was a blend of live-action mixed with stop-motion. We did it kind of like you would do with a film witha CGI character, where we filmed the movie at a house in Hollywood, where Marcel lives, and we filmed it with a stand-in Marcel. We would put him on a stick or wires and move him through the scene, and we would figure out what the lighting was supposed to be, where focus was going to be, and wed get a reference of what he should look like.
Then wed film it again without him, so we had a clean version, and then the stop-motion was done almost a year later, well it got extended because of Covid, and theres a guy named Eric Adkins (stop-motion director of photography) who was doing the stop motion of Marcel himself, with the same lighting that I created on set, hed match the lenses I used, and then insert Marcel back into the live-action film wed shot. So we were constantly trying to figure out how to make it feel real.
TMS: What drew you to cinematography? Was there a movie or TV series that really made you want to explore this craft?
BC: When I was a kid I used to put on plays, and I was always interested in telling stories that way, and as soon as my family had a camera I commandeered it and made it my own, and I filming whenever I could, and my mom said, you know you could do that as a living?, and it never crossed my mind, even though I grew up in LA. I just always thought, you know, doctor, lawyer, engineer, those are real jobs, and I was instantly like, yep, thats what Im going to do. When I was 16 I saw a movie called Immortal Beloved, and the photography was just gorgeous, and more than that it told the story about music and someone who cant hear, and it was, it was the first time I realized what cinematography can do, that it can make me feel. Like with music, you dont have to say it outright, you can just feel it, and I feel that its my job as cinematographer to make people feel things that they arent necessarily aware of. That movie changed my life.
TMS: Since were coming on the end of Pride Month, do you have a Pride Month must-watch movie?
BC: My favorite movie about queer people in general is either Beginners or a TV show called Veneno (HBO Max). Absolutely amazing, I love that show. Its the best thing Ive seen about being trans.
TMS: As one of the few trans cinematographers working today, what advice do you have for trans and non-binary folks who want to work in the industry and find community in this business?
BC: Its really a puzzle Im trying to figure out. Im very surprised by how few trans people there are in the film industry, at least in camera crew, where I know most of my trans people. It seems like, and I think it is a place that is very open to trans and queer people in general, so its surprising to me that theres not more trans people involved. I think that maybe thats just generational, because people my age didnt grow up in a time where it was more acceptable or that producers were looking for people like us. I think that those things are changing and hopefully will change more. I would say keep pushing. I think theres this strange thing of confidence begets confidence, and its difficult to get confidence without getting started, but I think that if you can fake the confidence for a little bit, it starts to snowball, and you go from there. And then it becomes real. Because you know who you are and you have stories to tell. And queer people in general do have stories to tell!
Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is currently in theaters. You can check out more of Bianca Clines work on her website.

6 Brain Health Habits To Include In Your Daily Routine Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That
Posted: at 9:18 pm
We hear a lot about the importance of heart health, gut health and taking care of our overall health, but one area often overlooked is brain health. "Your brain is a unique organ like a muscle, the more you use it the more it develops," Dr. Walid Wazni, a Neurologist and Medical Director of the Stroke Center at Dignity Health St. Mary Hospital in Long Beach tells us. Having good brain health enhances your ability to effectively communicate, problem solve, make good decisions and live a productive life. "The health of one's brain is the most important goal for a happy and functional life. Anyone with a family member with advanced dementia is aware of how dehumanizing it is to be without a well-functioning brain," Dr. Mark Liker MD Neurosurgeon with Dignity Health Northridge Hospital adds. Eat This, Not That! Health spoke with neurologists who explain why it's important to rewire your mind and daily habits to include in your daily routine that are good for the brain. Read onand to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had COVID.
Dr. Liang Wang, MD Neurology, Dignity Health Northridge says, "As a neurologist, I am always searching for the latest in evidence-based medicine so that I can provide the most current recommendations regarding brain health to my patients. We as human beings have a brain that is most extraordinary and capable of astonishing things: our brains have led us to the moon, composed beautiful music (that get stuck in our heads coincidentally), and make the most complicated acrobatic movements look easy. Yet we were all born without these abilities; that's where neuroplasticity comes in-one of the most important concepts in neuroscience and neurology. No, our brains aren't made of plastic (though some days we might feel that way); it simply means our brain is constantly reorganizing and rewiring itself. Think of it like your smartphone's operating system, constantly changing its functions depending on how you use it, without ever needing periodic updates. Pretty neat! Not every change is for the better however. Sadly, many readers likely have experienced a most tragic loss of a loved one due to declining mental function resulting in dementia, robbing someone of a dignified living as a person. This is all in large part due to neurodegeneration that has either hijacked or overcome the potential of neuroplasticity to ill effect, causing permanent brain damage. Which is why maintaining brain health and avoiding detrimental changes to our neuroplasticity will help ensure we remain our optimal selves for as long as possible."6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
Dr. Liker states, "Nowadays the significant changes in the daily circadian and therefore brain rhythms have been disrupted by a variety of influences and we are seeing that in the increased rates of psychological disease affecting both young and old. Rewiring the brain is a loose term that can be better defined as rectifying the functional connectivity that has gone awry due to whatever exogenous influence whether it be separation from friends and loved ones, increased drug and alcohol use, reduced physical activity, excess use of social media, change in eating or sleep habits, illness or financial stresses etc. . The most effective way to reconstitute the normal functional connectivity of the brain is to resume a healthy lifestyle. It requires a return to structured and healthy habits that we perhaps forgot or dismissed due to recent societal changes. Because of the natural diurnal changes in many brain hormones and neurochemicals, a set of regular habits will stand to benefit the brain in the long term. That means returning to the things that we all know make us feel better and improve brain function such as eating and sleeping at regular times, reducing exogenous and endogenous stimulation, getting regular exercise, eating a balanced diet. The pandemic and its effects have uncovered a great deal of psychopathology that has been "submarined" in the pre pandemic period because of loss of some regular coping mechanisms that were interfered with due to the effects of the pandemic. Depression (adult, adolescent and pediatric), anxiety, OCD, addictive behavior, pain syndromes, effects of prior head trauma can all become more burdensome in recent times. One promising technology involves non-invasive and gentle transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), an FDA approved therapy for some of these diseases but which also has shown surprisingly good outcomes in off-labeled applications. The general concept behind TMS is the transmission of energy to the brain surface (cortical layer) in the form of a magnetic current that rectifies the abnormal circuitry and brain oscillations that have emerged because of the above negative factors. Improvements in objective brain wave patterns (electroencephalography) and more subjective clinical behavior can be identified after the series of treatments needed to provide lasting benefit. It is a technology more common in Europe but recent developments such as MRI-guided brain navigation and personalized treatment based on abnormal EEG patterns have made the technology much more effective."
Dr. Wang reminds us, "We live in a stressful and unpredictable time right now, so I will start with this. I tell my patients that even in the face of all the stressors and negativity in life, they should face it with a positive attitude; not only will they feel better, but it also helps their brain as well! Coping with stressors and maintaining mental health have been shown in studies to improve neuroplasticity and significant stress have been shown to decrease it. Talking about mental health is no longer a taboo topic, and in fact has become a hot button issue since the era of Covid. Make time and effort daily to be mindful!"
Dr. Wazni explains, "Both the quantity and qualityis crucial to our brain health. Poor sleeping habits have been linked to numerous neurological diseases such as stroke, cognitive aging, dementia, Parkinson's disease."
According to Dr. Wang, "Restful sleep is essential for neuroplasticity as well as overall bodily health; lack of sleep, even for one night, has been shown to significantly impair brain function. Ask yourself, when was the last time you had consistent restful sleep for one week in a row? When I counsel my patients on this topic, I also include this question and I can tell you a staggering amount I can't remember when. Restful sleep also means that the sleep you are getting is quality sleep, so go see a doctor if you have any suspicion of a condition, such as obstructive sleep apnea that is disrupting sleep. Snooze away (healthily) for better brain health!"
Dr. Wazni says, "Social engagement can provide protection against dementia. Engagement in social activities may reduce the risk of dementia due to mental and intellectual stimulation, this is especially important later in life."
Dr. Wazni shares, "Exercise can help protect our memory as we age by preventing brain atrophy. Exercise also reduces stress and anxiety by releasing neurotransmitters responsible for stress and anxiety replenishing your synapses."
Dr. Wang states, "We all know exercise is important, but specifically for the brain, I recommend daily walking to my patients. From a brain perspective, walking is just fine. Repeated studies have shown increased blood flow to the brain, increased markers of plasticity, and better cognitive function, all just from daily walking! Contrary to popular belief, we really do use 100% of our brain, and walking (even at normal speed) uses a large portion of our brain and cognitive capacity, even if we don't feel that it is mentally challenging (unlike say, doing taxes). So, my advice is to lace up, check out a new playlist or podcast, and get to 30 minutes of walking a day!"
Dr. Wang says, "The adage, use it or lose it, is what I say to my patients. We have this gift of a brain and its extraordinary capacity to learn and absorb new things in life, throughout our life, so don't waste it! Whether it be crossword puzzles, a new recipe, a new sport, and yes even video games, the key is new and novel. The very nature of neuroplasticity means experiencing something new and different, so doing the same routine every single day isn't as beneficial as trying new things. It doesn't have to be a new thing everyday of course, but new enough to keep your brain engaged. There's no recommended frequency of new things, just do what feels natural to you."
According to Dr. Wazni, "A healthy diet reduces your risk of stroke or cerebrovascular disease. Mediterranean diets which are typically rich in omega-3 fatty acids and unsaturated fats that have been linked to lower blood levels of beta-amyloidthe protein linked to Alzheimer's."
"One of the newest intriguing areas in neurology and neuroscience is the concept of the "gut brain connection" and yes, it is exactly what it sounds like," says Dr. Wang. "Research has shown that altered gut microbiota (the variety and number of different microbes in your gut) contributes to development of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease as well as mental health issues. Even more amazingly, fecal transplant of young mice into older mice reversed some hallmarks of aging in the eyes and brain! Because everyone's gut is different, I generally recommend to my patients the MIND diet specifically because it has been shown to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. As for probiotics, I generally find natural ones found in soy and milk products like yogurt and miso."

The impact of TMS on driver success – FleetOwner
Posted: June 3, 2022 at 12:15 pm
President and co-owner of Houston-based Clark Freight Lines Danny R. Schnautz refuses to put junk in front of his drivers. As a former professional truck driver, Schnautz can spot junk when he sees it.
Over the years, that driver-focused mentality has made Clark Freight Lines particularly selective about the transportation management systems (TMS) and software that its professional drivers are asked to use.
The for-hire carrier runs a fleet of flatbeds, vans, specialized trailers, and a continuously expanding collection of intermodal chassis. The company hauls petrochemical products as well as imported lumber, plywood, stone, and other specialty cargo like warehouse materials, large statues, and even Grand Prix cars at one point.

Running that fleet is a mix of company drivers and owner-operators, many of whom have been with Clark Freight Lines for more than 20 years. Co-owners Schnautz and his brotheralso a former truck driverhave found that automating certain aspects of the business, like safety training, dispatch, and payment settlements, have been a major timesaver for drivers. Schnautz is quick to point out, however, that regardless of advancements in technology, the business wont work without that irreplaceable human touch.
Drivers are people who have a name. Trucks are objects; they have numbers, Schnautz told FleetOwner. Thats a big difference for us. Technology aids us; it doesnt replace us. Drivers are not interchangeable, and neither is our office staff. Using technology to complement their strengths and compensate for human weaknesses is the best place for the technology.
To assist dispatchers and drivers, Clark Freight Lines, which has a TMS app of its own under development, uses LoadMaster from McLeod Software to help dispatchers plan loads and provide input for driver miles in real time.
Operational information is entered into the TMS so all departments within the company know where drivers and loads are at any given time.
We have an obligation to the drivers to deliver the best of whats availablewhether its the best run, the best days off, the best equipment, the best maintenance schedule, or the best trailer situation, Schnautz said. Whether a trailer is red-tagged or whether a run has increased in rate, we want to get that information in [the TMS] and share it with the driver.
Clark Freight Lines also uses TMS to capture safety information from roadside inspections as well as anything related to drivers regulatory certifications and expirationsthink hazmat or medical certifications and commercial drivers license renewals.
The carrier, without a ton of effort or bandwidth, has been able to go through those driver records and give drivers plenty of notice when, for example, their hazmat certifications expire, according to Schnautz. Fleet managers also are leveraging these systems to help walk drivers through some of those certification processes as needed.
I dont think anybody ever buys a TMS because its cool, noted Mark Cubine, VP of marketing for McLeod Software. Fleets had a business outcome in mind that caused them to make the investment because its a lot of work to internalize a TMS.
For Cubine, optimizing fleet management software comes down to a few value propositions. The first, he said, is improving a companys operating ratio.

There are all kinds of inefficiencies in every trucking company, Cubine said. Information and automation are the keys to unlocking all those efficiencies.
Whether its fuel costs, network, or profitability in a lane, Cubine urged fleet managers to regularly question whether they are pricing freight correctly or leaving money on the table. Their most urgent responsibility, however, is making sure they are taking care of their drivers.
TMS software might assist fleets struggling with driver capacity, which is defined today by federally mandated hours-of-service regulations. Another value proposition of TMS is the ability to constantly manage that capacity, driver detention time, and conscientiously know how trucks are being utilized compared to how well the company and driver will be paid.
Automation can play a role in simplifying billing and settlements for all parties involveddrivers, back-office staff, fleet management, and shippers.
Fleet managers might also turn to a TMS solution if they find browsing various load boards cumbersome.
Axele TMS, for example, integrates with five load boards on its platform, including DAT and Truckstop.com, with plans to include more in the future, explainedShaman Ahuja, head ofAxele. The company also offers TMS cloud software for truckload carriers and integrates with load boards, ELDs, market rates, maps, and accounting systems.
Instead of having different Excel sheets to manage finances and driver assignments, fleets can do everything within the same application, Ahuja said.
Certain TMS functionalities allow carriers to shop for a load, assign specific loads to a driver, and provide dispatchers who might be managing some 10 to 20 drivers at a time with real-time visibility of driver location and the status of the shipment. These days, that kind of visibility and planning is becoming increasingly important amid volatile fuel prices and an emphasis on further reducing deadhead miles.
Altos Express, a New Jersey-based for-hire carrier that runs refrigerated trailer loads for dedicated lanes in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and New York, has a base of company drivers, half of whom stay out all week with the other half of the companys fleet home every day.
Altos Express dispatches to drivers daily and, before implementing fleet management software, that process was quite vexing. Dispatchers would verbally tell drivers their assignments and then follow up with a written manifest that included the customers location, pickup and delivery appointment numbers, and directions. Then, at the end of the week, drivers would submit paper copies of their proof of deliveries, bills of lading, fuel receipts, and lumper receipts. The carrier then would create invoices and send them out to their customers for remittance.
Altos Express has since streamlined its dispatch operations using Axele TMS. Now, fleet managers can set up existing customers with their addresses, rates, and contacts, so drivers can send them all the information they need to make their deliveries via an app on their phones.
Drivers now upload all their documents directly into the app, which then sends all required electronic paperwork to Altos dispatch team instantaneously.
Having this ability has given us not only the resource to give our drivers the information they need, but in turn, we can then get the paperwork all together and then submit our invoices to the customers daily instead of weekly, explained Chris Medina, a dispatcher for Alto's Express.
Our drivers are getting all their dispatch information directly onto their phones, Medina added. This is a help to them because they have access to all the information that we are entering when we put their load in. Everything they need is right in the palm of their hands. Occasionally, a driver may need directions, and we can send them directly to their phones instead of them needing to pull over and call the office.
The job of a commercial truck driver is historically one of the most difficult professions out there. While other fleet employees can work from offices or even their homes, long-haul drivers endure extensive hours and face the risks of the road, all while being away from their families for long periods of time.
Manoj Parmar, product manager for Axele TMS, pointed out that because of these underlying conditions, there are fewer drivers than needed on the road today, and the industry has yet to grasp exactly how to utilize their time efficiently.
They are wasting their miles, and theyre idle waiting for the next load, Parmar told FleetOwner. If they have the right technology to find the right load for them at the right time and the right location, then it will keep everything running.
On top of that, many drivers arent met with even the basics of human respect and decency at customer facilities. That has been made all-too apparent over the course of the pandemic, and most recently Rep. Jason Silvis (R-Indiana) authorized legislation to require truck drivers access to restrooms when picking up or dropping off shipments.
House Bill 2465 creates the Truck Driver Restroom Access Act, which would require retail establishments, shippers, receivers, and terminal operators to give truck drivers access to indoor or portable toilets during regular business hours. Those who fail to provide access would be issued a written violation for a first offense and a $300 fine for each subsequent offense. The bill is in the House Transportation Committee awaiting review.
Parmar stressed that technology could help drivers not only with all the digitized paperwork they need but also by giving them the power to rate fleet customer facilities through TMS functionality.
The facility will be rated and scored by the driver, Parmar said. We are trying to bring this aspect of how the pickup and drop-off locations treat drivers into our technology. It gives drivers a feeling of community together.
For its own TMS app, Clark Freight Lines conducted a survey to determine what drivers wanted from the app. Schnautz told FleetOwner the app will include functions like settlements for owner-operators and payroll for company drivers. All drivers will have visibility as to when their check is coming out and how it is being billed for the week they are being paid. It would also contain customer location information, so the driver has it on hand as needed.
The Clark Freight Lines app will also include a function so drivers can connect with one another and share information about certain facilities and places to park. Clark Freight Lines drivers also requested functionality for communications with all fleet departments as well as safety training and certification alerts.
There are so many factors that go into the best match for a load and a driver, and when you add equipment and timing to that, you need the data to make the good decision, but for us, people make the best decisions, Schnautz said.
You have to adjust a lot in trucking, he added. When something changesthat could mean the customer cancels six loads, or there is a storm, or a truck breakdown, or a driver is sickthen you have to recover. The computer programs aid those decisions, but for us, its still the people making the decisions. If you dont have all the information, its not going to be a good decision.
The right fleet management technology should set up both the fleet and drivers for success, McLeods Cubine pointed out. Part of that success means keeping an eye on driver compensation over time and paying close attention to when drivers submit home-time requests.
Drivers come with an expectation of where they are going to run, how you are going to handle their time off, and how much money they are going to make, Cubine explained. Yes, you must have the tools to evaluate how that driver is doing the work, are they on time, and are they doing everything I expect? But you have to ask, Am I doing everything for that driver?
McLeod has a function in its TMS called Feasibility, in which planners can look at a load, hit the feasibility button, and calculate whether a driver can safely pick up and drop off the load in time.
Can they get there safely for the next load? Cubine asked. Can they physically do it without any question of forcing them to speed or being unreasonable about detention time?
Kem Wallace, now a senior solutions architect at McLeod, started his career in trucking as a driver. He emphasized the importance of having drivers participate in the TMS coding process.
Weve also coded the system for driver preferences to be included for the fleet manager, Wallace explained. This allows managers to know this driver really loves going Northeast System or this driver doesnt like a specific commodity. The system can recommend to the fleet manager what works, and that drives retention straight up. It doesnt mean you can always do it, but now the driver feels you know them a little better.
