The secret to South Korea’s COVID success? Combining high technology with the human touch – The Conversation Africa
Posted: at 10:22 pm
According to the recent House of Commons report on the UKs pandemic response, one of the governments key failings was to assume that the success of countries like South Korea in controlling the virus couldnt be replicated in Britain. This decision to ignore approaches that were proving successful elsewhere was one of the UKs biggest oversights early in the pandemic.
However, the report itself falls into a similar trap. It regards South Koreas pandemic response as exceptional due to its advanced use of digital technology, ignoring the fact that the country also relied a lot on old-fashioned social interventions contact tracing, quarantine and isolating cases aided by boots on the ground.
To combat COVID and future pandemics, governments need to heed the lessons of these social interventions and not just the technological ones. South Korea teaches us that high-tech solutions can help protect against disease, but these work together with social interventions interventions that the UK has not used as effectively.
The UK government had the ambition of creating a world-beating test-trace-isolate system. Yet the House of Commons report concludes that Englands system has produced little effect, despite great expense. Other countries too have not been able to contain COVID sufficiently without resorting to draconian lockdowns. However, South Korea has been regularly cited as an exception.
While South Korea has had to introduce some control measures to limit the spread of the virus there have been curfews for businesses and limits on the size of gatherings in 2021 it has avoided full lockdowns and border closures while keeping cumulative confirmed COVID cases relatively low. Its worth remembering that South Korea is one of the worlds most densely populated large countries.
Key to this has been quarantine measures for travellers arriving in the country, which were introduced very swiftly, and the countrys highly effective test-trace-isolate system. This carefully designed process provides local support for those in isolation, while monitoring them and sanctioning non-compliance.
Yes, mobile phone data and other forms of surveillance have been used to trace people who might have the virus. But once a positive case is confirmed, it is human intervention that ensures those people dont spread the virus further.
A case officer from the local council is assigned to work with affected households. They communicate with infected people throughout the self-isolation period. After initially making contact over the phone to inform people of the need to self-isolate and the guidelines to follow, case officers then deliver a stay-at-home kit as discreetly as possible to protect the persons privacy.
This local council-funded kit contains essentials that prevent the person from needing to go out. They receive food, drink, bin liners, a thermometer for monitoring their condition, and face masks and hand sanitiser to help prevent further infection. Kits can also be tailored, for instance, to include certain foods or medications and even pet food.
The case officer is the infected persons primary point of contact, providing advice and support over the 14 days of self-isolation. Again, technology plays a role here. A smartphone app can be used by the case officer to monitor the persons self-reported symptoms and to make sure (via GPS) they arent breaking quarantine. But its influence shouldnt be overstated. The app is mandatory, but those who dont own a smartphone are still able to get support via phone calls and text messages.
People self-isolating can contact their case worker when extra support is needed, for instance, with urgent daily business such as banking or pet care. Because the relationship works both ways, this encourages compliance through the creation of a social bond. The comprehensive and individualised support given to those isolating primarily ensures compliance by removing barriers rather than punishing infractions.
The need to address the loss of income that self-isolating people face was also identified early on, with modest payments of up to $US374 (270) made easily available.
The effectiveness of these interventions is clear: published data suggests non-compliance with self-isolation rules has been extremely low in South Korea throughout the pandemic. Those who do break the rules risk losing the financial support that the government provides.
Not breaking the rules has also been encouraged as a social norm through daily reporting in the media on the number of people not adhering to isolation. Generally, this is no more than four people a day in a country of 55 million.
The South Korean experience reveals just how effective locally delivered and individually tailored self-isolation systems can be. But rather than seeking to replicate South Korean success, politicians, experts and the media in the west have repeatedly suggested that this performance is based on intrusive data-surveillance techniques enabled by a compliant national culture that cannot be replicated in their countries.
The House of Commons report suggests that if the UK were to try to emulate South Korea, the lessons to be learned concern the use of high-tech surveillance systems and comprehensive digital contact tracing. This misses out many of the core elements of South Koreas pandemic response that help make sure people isolate and quarantine as needed.
Focusing on technologies to adopt in the future ignores the more immediately transferable lessons on how to break chains of infection in a fast-moving pandemic. It is about time we acknowledged that comprehensive, shoe-leather public health systems should be the bedrock of containing current and future disease outbreaks. Much of what has worked in South Korea is exceptional only in that other countries such as the UK have made no effort to replicate it.

Louisville, Ky., Oct. 21, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Infection control has always been paramount in the care, safety, protection, and health of our beloved residents at Signature HealthCARE's 101 facilities in 10 states. The years 2020 and 2021 have taught us many things in the medical industry about innovation, forward-thinking, and creating new technologies to defend our residents' lives and sense of living against an on-going pandemic and viral enemy. That is why we are truly honored to be awarded the top distinction of Gold, in McKnights 2021 Excellence in Technology Awards, in the Skilled Nursing Quality category.
We couldnt be happier to receive this honor from such a leader in our industry as McKnights with news, business, and resources relating to the long-term care, home health and skilled nursing industry, said Joe Steier, President and CEO of Signature HealthCARE. To be recognized and awarded this top distinction means a great deal to our leaders, staff, and our Signature family who are dedicated to excellence in care, every day!
This is a well-deserved honor for a provider that clearly has taken extra steps to distinguish itself and the care of its patients, said McKnights Editorial Director John OConnor.
The leadership of Jason Kwart, Signature HealthCAREs VP of Procurement & Product Development, and the development of Signatures Viral Mitigation Solutions platform, garnered McKnights top distinction of Gold in the Skilled Nursing Quality Category. Signatures Viral Mitigation Solutions platform goes above the standard defense strategy of many traditional processes with a multi-layered and comprehensive infection prevention and control platform, critical in mitigating the transmission of infectious disease, by significantly reducing viruses, particulates, and pathogens that cause disease. This platform is not only critical for our current pandemic defense, but for future defense against others, in all our facilities. Viral Mitigation Solutionsconsists of 5 technologies that can be used independently or in a layered fashion for the utmost protection. This is in addition to the plentiful procurement of PPE, led by Jason and his team. The Viral Mitigation Solutions platform includes:
Story continues
Entrance Screening Station: A station, set at the point of entry of a facility, that performs a non-contact temperature inspection and a contact tracing questionnaire. An entrants temperature is scanned, and admittance is only approved if the temperature inspection and questionnaire is passed.
Shoe Sanitation: A step-up platform that contains a UV light sanitizer that disinfects the soles of shoes within 8 seconds and is proven to kill more than 99% of pathogens by taking that single step onto the platform.
The Electrostatic Mist Sprayer: Specialized equipment uses a spray apparatus to disseminate an electrostatically charged mist onto surfaces to sanitize multiple surfaces. The spray is applied throughout a designated area and left on for 10 minutes, then wiped down, killing 99% of pathogens.
UV Sanitation Station: A portable device that can be used in a variety of rooms to disinfect furniture, fixtures, and equipment with 360-degrees of coverage. With this powerful UV light, with the click of a button and about 30 minutes time, a room can be sanitized, destroying 99% of pathogens.
Ionic HVAC System: An installation connected to roof-top and floor HVAC systems, which emits ions into a variety of spaces to kill pathogens, allergens, odors, aerosolized viruses, and other volatile organic compounds that can cause illnesses and irritation, reducing those particulates by up to 75% after 24 hours of usage.
McKnights also honored the installation of our Signature SAFEGUARD program which incorporates the Viral Mitigation Solutions platform within an overall defense strategy that includes Infection Preventionists, Vaccination Programs, Onsite Rapid Testing, Lab Testing, and 24/7 Care Navigation.

Smart Grid Market by Component, Application, Communication Technology and Region – Global Forecast to 2026 – ResearchAndMarkets.com – Business Wire
Posted: at 10:22 pm
DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "Smart Grid Market by Component (Software, Hardware, Services), Application (Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Consumption/End Use), Communication Technology (Wireline, Wireless), and Region - Global Forecast to 2026" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.
The smart grid market is projected to reach USD 103.4 billion by 2026 from an estimated USD 43.1 billion in 2021, at a CAGR of 19.1% during the forecast period.
Governments worldwide are undertaking many initiatives to meet the future electricity demands and focusing on reducing carbon footprint by promoting the use of renewable energy sources to produce energy. The increasing need for efficiency and stability of the electric grid is expected to offer lucrative opportunities for the smart grid market during the forecast period. However, the high installation costs of the smart grid act as a restraint for installing the smart grid systems.
The software segment by component is expected to grow at the highest CAGR from 2021 to 2026.
Based on the component of smart grid systems, the software component is estimated to be the fastest-growing market from 2019 to 2026. The smart grid software helps ensure effective management of smart grid operations, improves process efficiency, and reduces energy production costs; hence, the segment captures the major market share.
Distribution segment by application is expected to emerge as the largest segment for smart grid implementation
The distribution segment, by application, is projected to hold the highest market share during the forecast period. Distribution substations isolate the faults in transmission systems. Distribution feeders transport power from the distribution substations to end users, serving many premises. Efficient distribution application helps in quicker restoration of electricity after power disturbances, reduces operations and management costs for utilities, and ultimately lowers the power costs for consumers.
North America: The largest smart grid market
North America is currently the largest smart grid market, followed by Europe and the APAC. The US accounted for the maximum share of the North American market in 2020. It is also projected to grow at the highest CAGR from 2021 to 2026. One of the key reasons for the large market size is the early adoption of smart grid projects. The strong financial position of the US and Canada enables them to invest heavily in smart infrastructure platforms of the smart grid market.

Nursing college technology links Northeast to rest of the state – Norfolk Daily News
Posted: at 10:22 pm
Its known as an iEXCEL Wall, and it gets medical students excited in addition to helping them to learn.
For rural areas, it helps to level the playing field so that medical campuses like Northeast Community College can keep up with the latest advances in health care technology.
On Wednesday, University of Nebraska Medical Center Chancellor Jeffrey Gold visited Norfolk and the downtown and met community leaders.
His final stop was Northeast Community Colleges McIntosh College of Nursing, which features an iWall that links the University of Nebraska Medical Centers five nursing campuses so the latest technology can be shared during lessons and projects simultaneously.
Sen. Mike Flood of Norfolk, who helped to arrange for Dr. Golds visit, said there are few nursing colleges in Nebraska that have access to this type of technology.
As we know, this is the future of medicine and the future of our area, Flood said.
Dr. Gold, Nicole Carritt, UNMCs director of rural initiatives, and Bob Bartee, UNMCs vice chancellor of external relations, met with Norfolk community leaders and other Northeast Nebraska stakeholders about common priorities, such as health education, health workforce shortages and economic development, that UNMC and Norfolk city, business and community leaders can work together to address.
They also will meet with leaders of Northeast Community College to discuss collaborative efforts between UNMC and Northeast, including a new radiology partnership that will begin in fall 2022.
This is a big day for Norfolk, Flood said. We have been talking about different ways to grow our communities, especially here in Northeast Nebraska.
Gold said he is not aware of any other medical system in the United States or the world where the entire educational system is linked through high bandwidth capability so that students, faculty and staff can work together in real time.
They can view real patient images and work on problems at the same time, study together, learn together and hopefully practice together, he said.
Gold, who also is a surgeon and medical educator, said he is always impressed when he comes to Northeast Nebraska with the cohesiveness of the region. One of the things he always asks is what he can do for the community.
The answer is always the same three things, Gold said. Its workforce, workforce and workforce. And if youre not listening, its more workforce.
Gold said UNMC already has established strong partnerships with Northeast Nebraska and in rural areas through scholarships, Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP) and the Northeast Nursing College.
So what does it take to get someone to live in Norfolk or a community that doesnt have as many offerings as a metro area?
Gold said it takes creating great jobs, working with fabulous people and offering a great place for people to raise their families. Then it depends on things like what people can do for entertainment, such as the arts, music and athletics, he said.
Among the more than 15 people taking part in at least part of the tour were Dr. Marysz Rames, president of Wayne State College, and Connie Rupp, chief nursing officer at Faith Regional Health Services.
Dr. Leah Barrett, president of Northeast Community College!q ,expressed appreciation for all those who attended and discussed the importance of the region and serving it.

Going Forward To The Land: Technology For Permaculture – Hackaday
Posted: at 10:22 pm
Its usual for a Hackaday scribe to read hundreds of web pages over a typical week as we traverse the world in search of the good stuff to bring you. Sometimes theyre obvious Hackaday stories but as youll all no doubt understand we often end up on wild tangents learning about stuff we never expected to be excited about. Thus it was last week that I happened upon a GQ piece charting the dwindling remains of the communes set up in rural California by hippies during the counterculture years.
With only a few ageing residents who truly embraced the back-to-the-land dream remaining, these adventurously-designed home-made houses are gently decaying into the forest. Its a disappearing world, but its also close to home for me as someone who crew up on a self-sufficiency smallholding in the 1970s. My parents may not have been hippies in the way those of everyone else in that scene at the time seemed to be, but I learned all my curiosity and hacking skills in the many opportunities presented to a small child by an unruly combination of small farm and metalworking business. Theres part of me that would build a hippy home in a Californian forest in a heartbeat, and throw myself with gusto into subsistence vegetable growing to get me through each winter.
So fresh from musing on hippy utopias and rose-tinted reminiscing, a Tweet from [Mara] struck a chord. They asked So which hacker con is going to be first to offer workshops in woodworking and horticulture?. Woodworking should be right on-message, buthorticulture?
While at first sight the idea of gardening at a hacker camp seems unlikely, I think Im right in understanding that their point lay not in the best technique for potting out the petunias, but in permaculture skills. In effect, hacking the environment to grow plants whether for food or not, and therein lies a huge range of crossover with a hacker camp, as well as with the self-sufficiency side of my upbringing and those aged hippies in California.
When your summers growing up are spent running wild and barefoot in the Oxfordshire countryside, you take for granted the things that you learn and its only later that you find its not that common to be able to milk a cow, deliver a calf, make hay, or extend the growing season and pick the right varieties to have home-grown fruit and vegetables year round in the soggy British climate. Perhaps they have a point, and should our community be applying more of its skills towards permaculture hacks and less towards technology for its own sake? Perhaps this is best expressed not in terms of going back to the land to live the life of an 18th century subsistence farmer, but going forward to it, and helping create a future where technology is an integral part of successful permaculture.
Paging through a week of Hackaday articles its pleasing to see that you, the community we cover, are as inventive as youve ever been. Hackaday articles cover a varied range of fascinating hacks that captivate us who spend our days under the sign of the Wrencher, and we hope they do for you too. But its true, not many hacker takes on permaculture come our way. Is that because not much of interest is happening in that field? We dont think so, more likely is that the really interesting projects either arent being documented online or appear in communities that dont (yet) intersect with ours. Wed like to see more agricultural robots maybe like the FarmBot in the header image, and smallholding automation. We think you might too. Should our community turn its thoughts forward to the land? As always, the comments are open.
