Facebook is bombarding cancer patients with ads for unproven treatments – MIT Technology Review
Posted: June 30, 2022 at 9:23 pm
One from Verita Life, in Bangkok, Thailand, targeted Australians like Autar, falsely claiming that a hypothermia treatment offered there would destroy cancer cells. When Autar took a screenshot of the ad in his news feed in August of 2020, it had more than a thousand likes and 600 shares.
Autar reported the ads he saw to Facebook using its in-platform systems, but they remained up. At one point, he says, he used a Silicon Valley connection to try to flag the ads directly to Facebook management. He stopped seeing the clinics ads in the Ad Library and on his own feed after that, but they returned a few months later.
Both CHIPSA and Verita Life had several ads running on Facebook and Instagram before MIT Technology Review inquired about them, according to the Ad Library. Verita Life was able to place an ad as recently as June 18, 2022, promoting the testimonial of a patient with prostate cancer. MIT Technology Review flagged that ad, along with two others promoting the same testimonial. All three remain active.
Meta reviews new ads through a largely automated process before they go live. The company noted that ads and posts from CHIPSAs Facebook page and Instagram account are eligible to be flagged and fact-checked by third-party fact checkers. If a company repeatedly violates its policies, Meta says, it will temporarily suspend the companys ability to place ads.
While Meta has rules pertaining to, for instance, misleading claims in ads, all Facebook and Instagram ads must also follow Metas community guidelines. The guidelines ban content promoting or advocating for harmful miracle cures for health issues when those claims both contribute to serious injury or death and have no legitimate health use.
Those rules, even when swiftly enforced, can leave a lot of gray area for sensational claims, Gorski says, because a lot of quackery could have a legitimate health use. For instance, he says, vitamin C obviously has legitimate health uses; it just doesnt cure cancer.
So what about Apatone, the treatment advertised by CHIPSA? Pre-clinical research indicates some anti-cancer effect, but it has not been demonstrated to be more beneficial than standard treatments we are using currently in humans, says Skyler Johnson, a cancer researcher who studies misinformation at the University of Utah.
The danger is not simply that the treatments are unproven or ineffective. Some alternative cancer treatments advertised on the platform can cause physical harm. Coleys toxins, a treatment developed in the late 19th century and offered at CHIPSA, comes with risks including infection, site reactions, anaphylaxis, and in severe cases shock, says Johnson.

Policy outlines inclusive, accessible technologies across UM | The University Record – The University Record
Posted: June 20, 2022 at 2:02 pm
The University of Michigan has adopted a new Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility Standard Practice Guide, which will help to ensure technologies on all three U-M campuses and Michigan Medicine are inclusive and accessible to the entire U-M community.
The initial phase of SPG 601.20 takes effect June 20 and will provide direction for technology and digital content capabilities that may be accessed and used by people with long- and short-term disabilities.
Good accessible design practices have been shown to benefit everyone. These changes will put us in better alignment with our DEI values, Provost Laurie McCauley said.
As the policy takes shape, units will be given time to familiarize themselves with the updated expectations, consider implementation, and determine long-term plans. Also, key U-M community members and stakeholders will have an opportunity to contribute to the development of the digital accessibility program, which will come together over the course of the 2022 calendar year.
Feedback over the past several years from a variety of stakeholders was used to draft the EIT Accessibility SPG. Those stakeholders include the Academic Program Group, Ethics, Integrity and Compliance Committee, Information and Technology Services, Office of the General Counsel, Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs, Strategic Technology Advisory Committee and the Web Accessibility Working Group.
The Office of Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX, in conjunction with the Office of the Provost, and the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer collaborated to develop the implementable policy that aligns with campus grassroots efforts underway at U-M for many years.
Over time, ECRT and ITS will provide formalized guidance through online resources that explain how schools, colleges and units can prioritize accessibility issues based on user impact and other factors.
Units will gain insight into how they can incorporate and leverage processes for users of technologies, services and activities, and resolve accessibility issues quickly. Teams within units will learn the most effective ways to test technology using automated and functional testing.
Ravi Pendse, vice president for information technology and chief information officer, said the EIT Accessibility SPG has three goals:
The EIT Accessibility policy will be a journey, rather than a destination, and units and community members will have time to learn along the way, Pendse said. As such, units can expect a period during which they can familiarize themselves with the policy, consider how best to implement the initial recommendations offered by ECRT and ITS, and determine long-term plans.
Many units, including Business & Finance, Center for Academic Innovation, College of Engineering, LSA, School of Social Work, University Development and University Libraries, have already started working on accessibility in an organized fashion.
The guidelines will make it more clear to units how to develop and procure technology. Faculty and staff also will find straightforward information on how to create online documents and web content. Most of the information can be found on the universitys accessibility website.
ECRT and ITS also have created a variety of processes over time to assist in purchasing, obtaining, developing and maintaining accessible technology, and will continue working with U-M Procurement Services on approaches and plans.
As the new policy is being implemented, it is an opportunity for more units to provide feedback, ask questions and access institutional resources supporting the effort, said Tamiko Strickman, special adviser to the president and executive director of the Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX Office.
It is also an opportunity to gain an expanded understanding of Americans with Disabilities Act regulations and laws that have existed for decades, and that the university is obligated to observe.

Smart Parks, the Dutch technologists tackling poaching with technology – Mongabay.com
Posted: at 2:02 pm
Youve heard of smartphones, smart cars, smart cities, even smart refrigerators, but have you heard of Smart Parks? Smart Parks is a Netherlands-based team of technologists dreaming up inventive ways to realize the founders vision of bringing the power of modern technology to bear in conservation.
Big tech organizations like Google and Microsoft have big conservation programs, but its not their core business, says Tim van Dam, one of the co-founders of Smart Parks and a telecoms expert. We know that if something is not your core business, you cannot get to the high-performance level that is needed for technological devices.
Smart Parks philosophy is to apply an innovative and research-and-development-focused approach, more commonly found in Silicon Valley, to conservation problems. While they explore many different forms of tech, theyre best-known for building so-called LoRa networks in parks and conservation areas, mostly in Africa, through which multiple devices can be connected to create smart parks.
LoRa, or long range, technology is a networking protocol that uses radio waves, much like the 4G and Wi-Fi networks. The key difference is that while 4G and Wi-Fi are designed to send a lot of data a short distance by using a lot of power, LoRa technology is designed to send tiny amounts of data about the size of a text message a very long way, using much less power.
[LoRa] was the perfect match for connecting a lot of things in remote areas to make sure the park management protecting those areas have an opportunity to get way more data from the field, van Dam said.
LoRas lower power requirements allow Smart Parks to design tracking devices that are smaller than traditional satellite collars. This is especially advantageous for tracking smaller animals like wild dogs, which cant take the weight of a large battery, and, perhaps surprisingly, rhinos. While a rhino could easily carry the weight of a heavy battery, collars dont work with their body shape.
Protecting the near-threatened southern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum simum) and the critically endangered black rhino (Diceros bicornis)is one of Smart Parks current main aims. Its rhino tracker is just under three centimetres cubed, small enough to be implanted into a hole cut into the rhinos horn and then sealed by a vet.
The industry has been searching for a very long time now on how to track a rhino with GPS, said Geoff Clinning, technology development manager for African Parks, a conservation NGO that manages protected areas in partnership with governments and local communities, and which has put LoRa technology to use in many of its parks. Its such a massive leap forwards knowing where every rhino is every morning and every evening.
Smart Parks hope is that the data collected through a range of sensors such as animal locations, fence voltages and vehicle movements and reported to a nerve center over a LoRa network will help give anti-poaching operations an advantage, something they call situational awareness.
Everybody thinks anti-poaching is a matter of boots on the ground. Its not, said Jurgen Elbertse, director and co-founder of Timbo Afrika Foundation, who recently contracted Smart Parks to install a LoRa network covering 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) in the Central Tuli Block in southern Botswana. It is making sure you cleverly and intelligently look at the asset you want to protect.
Elbertse drew an analogy with protecting a diamond: rather than trying to secure a whole building, you focus on constructing a secure vault to hold the diamond. In anti-poaching terms, the situational awareness gained through the sensors means you can strategically direct your efforts to key animal locations.
But while technology can certainly help give anti-poaching teams an advantage, its no silver bullet, Clinning said.
LoRa is a very valuable tool in a park managers toolkit, but its one of many, he said. Even if you can track something, you still need to have well-trained rangers who can be on foot who can monitor [the animal].
All sources agreed that LoRa is especially useful in remote areas where there are no mobile networks already in place. Parks need to pay an initial setup cost, which varies depending on the locations infrastructure and whether the staff have the skills to set it up without help. If the park already has a good network of radio towers for communication, it can be as simple as adding a LoRa gateway to each tower at a cost of around $1,000 per tower.
Once the network is established, parks can gather reams of information beyond tracking animals to prevent poaching, such as temperature data or water levels in key water holes. They can even flick a switch to turn on a water pump something that previously would have taken a ranger a round trip of several hours to do in some large parks.
Despite its advantages, LoRa isnt necessarily the best solution everywhere, Clinning said. In conservation areas with good mobile networks, LoRas setup and maintenance costs might still be more expensive than using the cellular network.
In other places, the sheer size that the network would need to cover makes it less suitable. For example, Clinning said satellite collars are still the best tool to track the parks mixed population of forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) and bush elephants (Loxodonta africana) in Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Here, the elephants travel across vast areas, and LoRa towers in certain locations would be vulnerable to vandalism.
For the Smart Parks team, building LoRa networks is just the beginning. Van Dams latest project is the ElephantEdge collar, which, in addition to transmitting its position, tracks animal sounds and motion. The hope is that this new wealth of data, combined with machine learning, could generate new insights into elephant behavior and ecology.
Smart Parks biggest challenge may be securing long-term funding rather than solving a technological puzzle. The organization is split between a nonprofit organization, which focuses on R&D, and a company that markets its products. However, Smart Parks is reluctant to charge enough to make a profit on its collars, preferring to search for grants to cover R&D and keep the costs as low as possible for perennially cash-strapped protected areas.
But it isnt easy, van Dam said. A lot of big NGOs dont understand R&D and they dont understand technology innovation. Supporting the running costs of an organization like Smart Parks is not sexy somehow.
Smart Parks also keeps all its technology open source, meaning the designs and code can be examined and modified by anyone. This is meant to ensure others in the industry dont waste time repeating the same work, as well as making it possible for others to carry it forward, should the organization have to shut down. It also seeks to train local people so that the knowledge is shared, and others can replicate installations, for example, without the costs of flying in its expert team. For Elbertse, this knowledge sharing is a key plus of using a technological approach to conservation.
The benefit is that you invest in a local person that you assist in getting more knowledge and education, he said. That is important. Id rather have an electronics person working for me than people who have to carry guns we think its a better investment.

The computer is one of the most versatile instruments ever invented. Its functionality is limited only by our capacity to program and our ability to imagine possibilities. Despite this, it has proven to be notoriously hard to deliver, reliably, applications (opens in new tab) that adapt well to the broad range of accommodations needed to enable access for people with disabilities. Disabilities come in seemingly infinite variation.
We should not be surprised at this, since the human body is complex. Some disabilities are temporary (e.g. a broken wrist) and some are chronic and persistent (e.g. deafness, blindness, motor and cognitive impairments). No matter the case, people often need various types of tools to make computer-based applications usable and accessible.
I have a progressive neural hearing loss, so I am very dependent on binaural hearing aids to function on a daily basis. My wife has two cochlear implants - a technology that still leaves me astonished that it works. I am reliant on captioning for television, recorded videos and video conference calls (opens in new tab). More generally, my disability has made me conscious of the value of technical responses to assist people with disabilities.
We know a lot about various kinds of interventions to improve accessibility. Magnification of images and text, maximization of contrast and font style, screen readers to describe orally what is on a computer screen, text-to-speech transcription (opens in new tab) for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, head-mounts for pointing when arms and hands are not reliable, the list goes on. Some of these features are built into computer, pad and mobile operating systems and can be activated to provide the needed accommodation. It is not always easy to know how to do this easily. Perhaps, more importantly, the designers of computer-based applications may not have experience or intuition in the use of accommodation tools to make design decisions that achieve the desired usability level.
Unless the programmer (or advisor) is an experienced user of screen readers, he or she may not know how to make a web page maximally accessible with available screen readers. Users may not know about configuration options that would make a device more readily useful. Even when we write detailed specifications for color combinations, contrast, font sizes, accommodation for magnification (e.g. does the web page still render in a useful way when magnified?), it may not be the case that a programmer will have the experience and skill to transform recommendations and standards into accessibly-crafted applications.
It is here that tools for the crafting of accessible web pages with templates and examples of use might make a difference. Just as the creation of web pages was once done by manually writing HTML (opens in new tab)-encoded web pages and is now often done with convenient tools for composition and layout, one wishes that there were composition tools that naturally produce accessible web pages. There exist testing tools, guidelines, and web-page composition editors but they often provide only limited guidance or assistance. Programmers seeking to produce accessible applications need to have a lot of experience using mechanisms, standards and accommodation tools to achieve the desired result.
Without a doubt there are some tools aimed at solving this problem but more are needed. We need more training and worked examples of good solutions that would improve tool makers ability to help programmers produce accessible digital objects and services. Investing in understanding what makes an application accessible is another area for serious research. Computer professionals need to spend time with people who rely on assistive software and hardware to gain deeper intuition about accessible/usable design.
Serious research is needed to develop a deeper understanding of perception and how steps can be taken to design for accessibility. Standards are needed to allow users to express their configuration requirements so that various operating systems can easily support accessible applications. Application programming (opens in new tab) interfaces and libraries are needed to support configuration for accessibility. Training for accessible design should be a requirement for programmers intending to create applications for users with disabilities.
I believe that many of the ingredients we need are already present, including a few people with extraordinary backgrounds and experience in designing for accessibility. We need to distill this knowledge and incorporate it into reality available applications intended to help programmers produce accessibility by design. While by no means trivial, there is considerable experience in the computer science and engineering communities, but the tools needed to achieve reliable accessibility continue to be elusive. None of these ideas are new. They just need to be applied with increased determination and with codified practices.
These are exciting times for some accessibility capabilities. Speech to text (opens in new tab), text to speech, speech recognition and understanding, language translation, speech re-rendering for improved acuity, optical character recognition (e.g. to translate menus), machine learning tools to improve interaction with voice, video and text for people with disabilities are all examples of technology developed in aid of accessibility. We can expect more to follow.
We've listed the best JavaScript online courses (opens in new tab).

As a long-term guest teacher, I had the flexibility in teaching style and content to promote what matters and is relevant to me and the student population I serve. This was a tremendous deviation from the focus in the traditional American education structure of demeaning narratives found in Document Based Questions given by school districts. Teaching offered me an opportunity to learn about the current mindset of our youth. Through student interaction, I noted that a lot of their social development is taking place through TikTok, Netflix, and rap music. If they are not talking to you about something they have studied or seen to be true, they are likely talking in TikTok lingo or making 30-second dance clips during passing periods.
Through mediums such as Netflix and TikTok, there is a wide range of global and cultural outreach available to American students. Consequently, when posed with a question like why are our youth educationally behind? the answer is systemic failure. American youth have access to global education, but they do not know how to fully process it because of lack of resources and exposure in the school system. This is not a universal American education experience, so when I see poorly funded schools, I know that the failure is targeted and intentional. Black and Brown children deserve to understand themselves and their world better through global education. The year is 2022. Excuses from our government are tiring, and we should be outraged by the lack of resources and inability to give our children a global education. After all, as told by the rapper Nas, "the world is yours." A thriving education is filled with funding/resources, support of individualized education, and access to global vision and understanding.
Family dynamics are our first learning ground. My family gave me strong roots and strong wings. Our young people should be taught to know their roots/legacies and be encouraged to soar up and beyond.
There was intentional global education in my childhood home, and I took the global baton and continued the course around the globe. As I have traveled around the world, I have been exposed to various mediums. One of my favorite mediums is Nollywood, Nigerias film industry. I am in awe of the familial aspects and cultural legacy Nollywood leads. Nollywood has a very efficient turn out rate, and the quality of its productions keeps getting better. A family drama, on their family compound, about the family fool, is compelling storytelling from my family-oriented perspective. I recommend these movies and TVshows:Temidayo Makanjuolas Blood Sisters, Kunle Afolayans A Naija Christmas and the series Young, Famous and African (which features a few Nigerian personalities). If you have ever attended a Nigerian party, you have experienced the intense power and belly laughs of the people. That energy is transferred through the popular storytelling platform of Nollywood and resonates globally.

Chinese researchers test technology to transmit solar power from space – Power Technology
Posted: at 2:02 pm
Researchers at Xidian University in China have trialled a technology that could one day wirelessly beam solar power from space to Earth, as reported by Bloomberg.
The power station model is designed to capture sunlight above the ground and convert it into microwave beams.
Microwave beams are then transmitted to a receiver station on the Earth, where they are again converted into electricity.
The research team has successfully conducted the test before a committee of outside experts, who verified its success.
At present, the power station model only has the capacity to send the energy 55m through the air.
The researchers hope that the transmission range can be further expanded in the future to beam the solar energy to Earth from solar panels orbiting the planet.
In 2013, researchers at the California Institute of Technology launched a space solar programme after receiving a $100m grant.
Researchers in India, Russia, the UK and France are also looking at possibilities for such technology, while Japanese researchers are said to be advanced in this area.
Although individual aspects of solar-from-space technology have already been tested, China is the first to test a full-scale model successfully.
This new technology is intended to help capture sunlight continuously from the sun during both the day and night.
This differentiates it from other clean energy technologies, which can only operate during daylight hours.
In March this year, the Chinese government unveiled plans to build 450GW worth of energy power projects in desert regions.
The government plans to build solar and wind power projects in the Gobi Desert and other desert locations.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has committed to increasing the countrys renewable energy capacity to at least 1.2GW by 2030, as well as ensuring its carbon emissions peak by the same year.

Battelle’s Proven Technology Ready to Address PFAS Threats to Drinking Water – Business Wire
Posted: at 2:02 pm
COLUMBUS, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As the country grapples with the persistent problem of PFAS contamination, Battelle stands ready to assist with a proven solution that eliminates the source of contaminated drinking water. The PFAS Annihilator attacks the source by destroying the chemicals preventing them from entering drinking water systems.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently issued health advisories for chemical compounds known as PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
These human-made chemicals, first introduced during World War II as an armor coating, have been adapted for a wide variety of everyday products, including food packaging, cosmetics, non-stick cookware, paint, firefighting foams and many other products that are oil and water repellent, temperature resistant and friction reducing. Their usefulness and durabilitytheyre known as forever chemicals is a double-edged sword. Now they are in the water, air and soil, and theyre very difficult to eliminate.
Today, PFAS are ubiquitous in all 50 states in the U.S. and around the world, and most people have them in their bodies. The health effects of some PFAS are linked to infertility, thyroid problems and several types of cancer.
There are currently no federally enforced, science-based standards for PFAS regulation, but the EPA released a PFAS Strategic Roadmap in October 2021 and identified more than 120,000 U.S. locations where people may be exposed to PFAS.
The EPA mid-June advisories for a few of the 5,000-plus PFAS compounds came with an indication that the federal agency will begin to regulate them later this year.
Battelle is ahead of the curve on this problem, said Amy Dindal, Battelles Environment Division manager. During the past decade, we have invested millions of dollars in PFAS research and developed a solution called the PFAS Annihilator to destroy PFAS chemicals.
The technology has been proven to destroy PFAS by using super critical water oxidation (SCWO), a process that results in breaking the carbon-fluorine bond that makes them so durable. Battelles on-site destruction capabilities are designed to eliminate PFAS at the source of contamination before they get to drinking water supplies. The PFAS Annihilator is a scalable technology that is able to be mobile, portable or fixed in terms of operating scenarios. Battelle anticipates that at least four units will be in operation by June 2023.
Other methods for treating PFAS-contaminated water provide removal of PFAS decontamination, but often generate secondary waste that requires additional treatment or landfilling for final disposition of the waste. The Battelle technology destroys PFAS completely, which mitigates concerns with meeting future regulatory limits. Battelle also provides PFAS laboratory analysis and is approved for EPA Method 533 and EPA Method 537.1, both drinking water methods on the EPAs Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule 5.
Initially, Battelle is focused on addressing sources of PFAS in industrial wastewater, landfill leachate and firefighting foams (AFFF). Later this summer, the PFAS Annihilator will be on site in North Carolina to destroy firefighting foam that have high levels of PFAS because of the suppression capabilities. The foams have been used for years at fire departments, airports, military bases and other sites but are now being phased out. While concerns exist about other treatment and disposal options, the Annihilator is a proven non-combustion technology to destroy PFAS in AFFF.
Earlier this year, the PFAS Annihilator was deployed to a facility in Michigan operated by Heritage-Crystal Clean (HCC). The closed-loop supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) technology was used and completely destroyed PFAS in landfill leachate that was brought to the site. Battelle is currently fabricating a fixed base unit that will be installed to operate at this HCC facility to destroy PFAS in multiple types of aqueous waste.
