In the marine sector, Leclanch's batteries improve efficiency, reducing the environmental impact of all vessel types, including ferries, tugboats and container ships

At a time when the transport industry is under more pressure than ever to decarbonise, the opportunities for European battery companies are huge. There are two main issues to contend with, however: harmful emissions must be cut, and electricity grids need to reduce their dependence on non-sustainable energy sources.

Leclanch is active in both of these areas, powering the electrification of transport through our batteries and accelerating the integration of renewable energy into the grid through our stationary storage solutions. New emissions regulations are set to be a key driver of growth over the next decade, while our energy storage solutions across fleet transportation and electricity grid management continue to be in high demand.

While it is undeniable that Asia was first out of the blocks in industrialising battery technology, Europe is catching up fast

Catching upTo create a more sustainable battery value chain, we must take a four-pronged approach. First, we need more European-headquartered companies with not only design and process know-how, but assembly lines too. Second, we need to standardise Europes e-vehicle charging infrastructure. Third, comprehensive EU policies governing the transport and electricity markets are vital. Last, but by no means least, we need to build a skilled workforce.

While it is undeniable that Asia was first out of the blocks in industrialising battery technology, Europe is catching up fast. Leclanch is investing in research and development to ensure our lithium cell energy density is on a par with, if not superior to, that of Asian manufacturers. Further, our in-house cells for medium to high-power applications are already competitive in terms of cost. That said, the issue of cost competitiveness with the Asian market shouldnt be ignored. Strategies to ensure Europe is keeping up need to be developed at both company and government levels.

Delivering tailor-made solutions that meet the exact specifications of clients is another major factor determining Europes success in the industry. Clients come to Leclanch because we can manufacture and test at any scale in Europe, deliver solutions that work and provide fast, high-quality after-sales service.

Charging aheadWhile many sectors are embracing green technology as the world moves towards a low-carbon future, the biggest drivers of innovation in battery technology are electric vehicles fleets in particular, as well as stationary storage and robotics. Our electric vehicle focus is on fleets, including marine vessels, trains and commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks, which generate far more pollution than passenger cars.

In the marine sector, our batteries improve efficiency, reducing the environmental impact of all vessel types, including ferries, tugboats and container ships. In rail, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are shaping the future of the industry. Battery-powered trains can replace those powered by diesel, with the advantage that they dont require the installation of overhead cables or electrified tracks like electric trains do. In the UK, only 42 percent of the rail network is electrified, meaning many trains currently have to run on diesel. However, the government has pledged to remove all diesel trains by 2040.

As for commercial vehicles, we tailor our batteries to suit whatever journey fleets are required to make. For example, we can produce smaller capacity on-board battery packs for city buses, smartly coupled with infrastructure that includes fast charging and battery swapping stations. Energy storage solutions play a crucial part in our progress towards a clean-energy future. The electrification of transport reduces societys reliance on dirty fuels such as diesel, but equally important are changes to the management of our electricity networks. This is where Leclanchs stationary storage solutions come in: energy storage adds vital stability to the grid, benefitting operators and users alike. Strategically discharging power during periods of peak demand can alleviate the strain on the grid and reduce energy users exposure to high-demand charges. It also means we are less dependent on non-renewable power sources such as nuclear and coal.

For example, we have just signed an agreement with the state-owned electricity company of Saint Kitts and Nevis to deliver the largest solar-generation and energy storage project in the Caribbean. It will provide the residents of these islands with a reliable and renewable clean energy source, as well as fixed cost savings compared with the current diesel-generated power system.

Leclanchs storage systems are customised to suit any application, whether its marine vessels or buses. Our speciality battery business demonstrates the companys ability to develop storage solutions for highly sophisticated applications. From automated guided vehicles to robots and defence applications, we design and manufacture specialised, custom-made, low-voltage battery systems for a wide range of clients. Our battery housings and charging equipment are designed on a case-by-case basis to ensure the best possible fit for each user.

Leclanch provided the groundbreaking battery system for Ellen, the worlds largest all-electric ferry, which made its first commercial trip on August 15. We are very proud to have designed and certified a unique lithium-ion battery system for the ferry and to be contributing to the fight against pollution and global warming.

Supporting developmentWhen I joined Leclanch in 2014, the company had invested heavily in developing new battery cells but did not yet have finished battery packs. Nobody buys just a cell they buy a battery pack, which requires a management system too. So we set about developing an in-house battery management system that prevents overcharging, deep discharging, short circuits, and operating over and under voltage and temperature. We also developed energy-management system software that controls large grid-connected battery storage. Finally, we made the strategic decision to manufacture in Europe so that we could be closer to our European clients.

In a move to ensure that Europe doesnt become dependent on Asian companies for its battery technology, the European Commission is now offering financial support to cell manufacturers. Under the criteria of the Important Projects of Common European Interest, EU member states will be able to support research and innovation, as well as the first industrial deployment of projects. The aim is to support companies in the high-risk phases of new technology deployment and allow private investors to step in with a clearer long-term view.

Our battery housings and charging equipment are designed on a case-by-case basis to ensure the best possible fit for each user

In 2017, the UK Government launched a much-needed 246m (276m) initiative known as the Faraday Battery Challenge, aimed at establishing the UK as a world leader in battery technology. As well as helping several research and development projects get off the ground, the investment has been used to set up an independent national battery research institute. Surging demand for battery technology in Europe is increasingly seen as an opportunity for the private sector, with institutional investors, venture capital funds, energy providers and car firms investing in the industry.

I would love to see European players dominate the battery market alongside competitors in Asia. To achieve this, we need a coherent industrial strategy, agreed upon by European governments. So far, the focus in Europe has been on electric passenger vehicles. The next step will be to see more investment in battery technology for fleet vehicles, which would have a significant impact on improving air quality.

Of course, the education and training of the right people with the right skills is crucial to the future of our industry. We need more engineers who understand the intersection of electrochemistry and the software that is needed to manage storage devices there are too few with this know-how in Europe today. Leclanch is doing its bit to address this issue through our partnership with the University of Warwick, and we are also working with several Swiss and German universities to push Europes battery sector forward.

Growing Cleveland’s start-up culture could come from new technology and a new place to work – News 5 Cleveland

Posted: at 2:22 pm

CLEVELAND Cleveland business leaders say after hosting a conference centered around Blockchain technology for two years in a row, the third annual conference could be showing off parts of a new co-working space in the heart of downtown Cleveland.

Right now, Charisma Curry's start-up, Parents in Motion , works from a co-working space called StartMart in Tower City with other entrepreneurs often just a few feet away.

See News 5's previous coverage of Parents in Motion here .

"Where one or two or more entrepreneurs are gathered, the ideas and the possibilities are endless," said Curry.

But those possibilities are limited by the size of Cleveland's start-up community right now, which isn't nearly as large as it is in other nearby cities.

In Columbus, local corporations started funds to support start-ups.

In Cincinnati, Cintrifuse is a nonprofit that guides businesses through their early stages.

In Pittsburgh, universities like Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh embraced technology development decades ago, offsetting lost manufacturing jobs.

"Technology-based economic development is never about just supporting today's status quo," said Cleveland State University's Albert A. Levin Chair of Urban Studies and Public Service Dr. Bob Gleeson .

He works at CSU now, but he helped get Pittsburgh's tech revitalization off the ground while at Carnegie Mellon years ago.

"It's about understanding the possibilities for what the economy can look like 10, 15, 20 years out into the future and putting your loyalties into that future."

Dr. Gleeson says it was a risk worth taking.

Cleveland tech company Chairman Bernie Moreno says it's a lesson Northeast Ohio needs to learn.

"I don't want to say that we're risk-seeking, but we have to be risk-tolerant, meaning that we try different things and are OK that failure occurs," said Moreno.

That's why he has pushed to make Cleveland a Blockchain Technology hub through his Blockland Solutions Conferences in 2018 and 2019.

"I think we use that as a catalyst to become a relevant tech city and beyond that, a relevant tech city for innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity," said Moreno.

The next step is to give tech start-ups a work space that Moreno calls City Block.

See the latest rendering of City Block here .

"We really have to fortify our city core, so that's the mission of what City Block is about," said Moreno.

City Block would take Tower City's relatively quiet shopping area and turn it into a place where start up businesses, like Parents in Motion, can work. It would put many entrepreneurs in the same building, creating the kind of communities that exist in other cities.

Outside the business community, it could also change the impression Cleveland gives to visitors who land at the airport and can take a train directly to what could one day be City Block.

"You land in this extremely vibrant center for entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation and that's your impression of Cleveland," said Moreno.

Emotion recognition technology should be banned, says an AI research institute – MIT Technology Review

Posted: at 2:22 pm

Theres little scientific basis to emotion recognition technology, so it should be banned from use in decisions that affect peoples lives, says research institute AI Now in its annual report.

A booming market: Despite the lack of evidence that machines can work out how were feeling, emotion recognition is estimated to be at least a $20 billion market, and its growing rapidly. The technology is currently being used to assess job applicants and people suspected of crimes, and its being tested for further applications, such as in VR headsets to deduce gamers emotional states.

Further problems: Theres also evidence emotion recognition can amplify race and gender disparities. Regulators should step in to heavily restrict its use, and until then, AI companies should stop deploying it, AI Now said. Specifically, it cited a recent study by the Association for Psychological Science, whichspent two years reviewing more than 1,000 papers on emotion detection and concluded its very hard to use facial expressions alone to accurately tell how someone is feeling.

Other concerns: In its report, AI Now called for governments and businesses to stop using facial recognition technology for sensitive applications until the risks have been studied properly, and attacked the AI industry for its systemic racism, misogyny, and lack of diversity. It also called for mandatory disclosure of the AIs industry environmental impact.

Indian IT companies deploy hitech technologies at home and abroad – Economic Times

Posted: at 2:22 pm

Once described as employers of softwares drudge workers despite their impressive business numbers, Indias IT companies, especially the top tier ones and some India offices of MNCs, are breaking the innovation glass ceiling. Cost arbitrage on plain vanilla coding is still there but Indias big tech players now also have products that offer unique solutions involving high-end software and robotics. ET looks at some of these technologies, deployed both at home and abroad.

ONGOING PROJECTSCloud Bank: Marcus, the online-only bank of Goldman Sachs, runs on Finacle, the core banking software of Infosys. The software is hosted on cloud. Traditionally, banks host their applications on servers at their premises. Finacle allows Marcus, which doesnt have a physical branch, to run its operations entirely on the internet. This allows the bank to lend cheaper but also scale its offerings at low costs.

Nice Price: Walmart runs a unit called CIA competitive intelligence and analytics out of its Bengaluru labs to help track and change prices to keep up with competitors globally. The lab has built algorithms that tracks prices of similar products on various retailer sites online and give insights on category sales. This allows Walmart to make price changes in real time.

Trial, Less Error: TCS is working with drug companies such as J&J-unit Janssen to make clinical trials more efficient and accountable. The company has created an Advanced Drug Discovery Platform, which allows drugmakers to efficiently enrol, monitor and track patients in clinical trials. The TCS platform allows pharma firms to have a digital trail on how a drug has performed during trials, crucial since errors can impact approval chances.

Coding Water: Cognizant is working with seed company Monsanto (now owned by Bayer) to create a digital tool that will track water usage and set precise irrigation plans without having to install a costly irrigation management system. The solution uses local weather data and also satellite-linked probes that measures moisture in the soil and updates farmers on their smart devices on adjusting irrigation plans. Over 300 farmers in Europe have begun using the tool, sold through Monsanto-arm Aquatek.

Used Car, Best Tech: Wipro worked with Mahindra FirstChoice Wheels, a certified used car company, to launch a connected car platform to turn a normal car into a smart car. It allows a car owner to interact with the vehicle and stay connected to it via a mobile app. The device, connected to the onboard diagnostics port of the car, allows users to prevent theft, track vehicle maintenance and get driving analytics in one dashboard. The solution brings new features in used cars for those who might not otherwise have been able to afford them.

COMPLETED PROJECTSSafe & Gyro: Larsen & Toubro Technology Services has designed and built a motion-activated screwdriver, which allows a user to operate it with one-hand only, an important safety requirement when drilling in dangerous situations. The gyro-screwdriver senses movements in a users wrist to control the motors direction, helping electricians.

Pump Primed: Cognizant and Grundfos, a global maker of pumps and water management equipment, has built a tool that allows technicians to remotely repair malfunctioning pumps using augmented reality. Data is transmitted from the sensors in the pump through an augmented reality solution using Microsoft HoloLens to superimpose a computer-generated image. The technician can diagnose maintenance issues and suggest solutions through a chatbot, enabling non-experts at remote facilities to handle complex repairs on their own.

Robo Wired: Infosys devised a solution for an overhead conductor manufacturer to apply a specialised coating on live electric wires that would extend their life and remove the need for expensive replacement, also reducing manpower costs. The company designed and developed two robots that would travel along the overhead conductor, cleaning and then coating it.

Dr Net: Wipro has helped a US healthcare provider create a Connected Health platform leveraging the internet-ofthings to facilitate electronic delivery of renal dialysis treatment at a patients home. There is a huge demand for dialysis at home in most countries as patients seek to reduce hospital visits. The platform allows important health parameters such as weight, blood pressure and the dialysis result to be sent to doctors over the internet. The system also allows doctors to prescribe medicines and other alerts to patients.

Piping Tech: Larsen & Toubro Technology Services has created a battery-operated welding robot to help build and maintain offshore oil pipelines, for a leading manufacturer of specialised pipeline and welding machines. LTTS has built capability not just in software, but also hardware.

Mmmm… fresh, delicious tenders: Forget G-Cloud, this 6.5bn Technology Products and Associated Services framework is where it’s at – The Register

Posted: at 2:22 pm

The UK's central government is dangling up to 6.5bn under the noses of resellers to supply commodity hardware, software and services across the British public sector for the next four years.

The pan-government Technology Products and Associated Services framework is due to replace the equally imaginatively titled Technology Products 2 from March, though the framework award was announced this week.

Some 22 suppliers made it onto Lot 1: hardware, software and associated services. It went live after midnight on 11 December following a 10-day standstill period that allows for legal challenges from any disgruntled business that believes it should have made the grade.

Lot 3, which covers Software and associated services, also went live yesterday, and is aimed at software resellers that flog commercial and open-source commodity wares, licences and related services. Twenty-nine resellers made it onto this section of the agreement.

Sources close to the framework said Lot 2 Hardware and associated services is due to go live next week. This largely comprises end user devices, infrastructure kit, consumables and peripherals and associated services. Thirty-eight resellers will be vying for individuals contracts here inclusion on the framework is no guarantee of business.

The final lot is for government techies that want to procure security software and appliances; 11 suppliers were chosen by framework organiser Crown Commercial Services to bid for deals here.

Just to put the latest mega framework into context, 5.19bn in total has been spent by central and local government on technology via the G-Cloud framework since it launched in March 2012.

Many of the usual suspects in the reseller community made it onto the framework, but a couple were noticeable by their absence looking at you Capita-owned Trustmarque, or indeed Capita itself. The big public sector frameworks always made up a huge chunk of Trustmarque's revenues and we have asked its parent company to comment.

Also missing in action was German giant Cancom.

We have asked Capita and Cancom for an explanation.

Technology To Make Healthcare More Effective, Indian Rep Tells UN – Inc42 Media

Posted: at 2:22 pm

Stay cautious of commercialisation of healthcare, Naidu tells UNPrivate and public players have helped in building a strong health servicesAffordability and accessibility are an important part of healthcare, says Naidu

As the Indian government is in the process enusring more inclusivity under its healthcare insurance scheme Ayushman Bharat with the help of Indian startups and innovators, the deputy permanent representative ambassador, K Nagaraj Naidu, in United Nations (UN) General Assembly, laid stress on the need for adopting new digital technologies, along with appropriate use of traditional medicines.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Global Health and Foreign Policy, Naidu also said that commercialisation of health services cannot be the only way out to improve healthcare. He laid stress on developing a strong public health system, which will, in turn, act as a guarantor for the private sector as well.

Naidu also noted that the health system can be strengthened by comprehensive changes in policies, regulations and relationships across the foundation of the health system, which will not only allow more effective use of resources but will also instill a positive change in behaviour of the service providers.

Naidu also highlighted that both private and public players have had their fair share of role to play in building a stronger health system. However, he noted that the world needs to be cautious of commercialisation of healthcare services.

Naidu said that affordability is the key to making healthcare more inclusive of all sections, which will also fuel it to become more holistic and stronger. He emphasised that governments across the world need to provide strategic leadership and synergies across health systems and provide clear incentives for private sector players to ensure their participation.

The Indian representative Naidu added that the governments also should come up with regulatory policies to ensure quality, accessibility and choice.

In addition, he also noted that the governments should make full use of TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) flexibilities to develop, use of generics and local manufacturing to meet public health objectives.

At the same time, governments should ensure transparency in cost and the price of medicines and other technologies, Naidu added. Moreover, he also stressed on innovative partnerships in research and development (R&D) and making use of new and emerging technologies, along with appropriate use of traditional medicines to make the system more concrete.

Naidu also noted:

Naidu also added, We saw the transformative potential of affordability when Indian pharmaceutical companies supplied medicines to HIV/AIDS patients in Africa for less than a dollar a day in early years of this millennium.

In addition, Naidu also highlighted Indian healthcare schemes like National Healthcare Protection, Fit India and Eat Right, where public-private partnership helped achieve the agenda, and recommended the government to opt for a similar model as well.

Scientists at School of Mines and Technology create a tool that drastically lowers medication prices – Kotatv

Posted: at 2:22 pm

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) The price of medication in the United States continues to be a problem for many, costing more than any other developed country in the world. That's why scientists at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology have innovatively created a solution to reduce the price of medications... being the only company in the United States with the tool.

Todd Menkhaus is the Founder and Chief Technology Officer for Nanopareil.

"So we can now with this type of product reduce the cost of making a vaccine from say $20 to $30 a dose to maybe 20 to 25 cents a dose," said Menkhaus.

Coming up with the idea in 2006, The Nanopareil (NANO-PAREL) procedure has taken 13 years for scientists to create.

"It's really something that can make healthcare much more accessible and economical for everybody to have the therapies and vaccines that they need for their lives," added Menkhaus.

"We take the process and it becomes a process that might take 40 or 50 hours, and it's something that we can get done in 15 minutes," said Menkhaus.

The procedure is sufficient with all FDA regulations and the company hopes the cost-reducing procedure will help people throughout the country and around the world get the treatment they need.

"It can be used for vaccines, it can be used for pharmaceutical medicines, a lot of these newest therapies that are being generated right now by scientists are so-called 'gene-therapies' and those are also able to be purified by these devices," said Menkhaus.

Currently, the Nanopareil procedure is being tested by pharmaceutical companies around the world, and Menkhaus said within several months when the testing process is over, he projects the company to nearly quadruple to meet the demand of the tool.

Port Authority To Look Into Technology That Could Save Bridge And Tunnel Carpool Discount – CBS New York

Posted: at 2:22 pm

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) The Port Authority previously said it was going to cancel the carpool discount at the Hudson River crossings, but after several CBS2 stories and push-back from local leaders it is revising that decision.

The discount gets you half off at the Holland and Lincoln tunnels and George Washington Bridge. The Port Authority said the discount has to go when cashless tolling arrives, claiming technology doesnt exist to monitor how many people are in each car.

But that doesnt seem to be the case.

Port Authority carpool lane pickup (Photo: CBS2)

The technology exists and is actually being used right now in California, Massachusetts and Georgia, Rep. Josh Gottheimer said.

Following multiple CBS2 reports and criticism from local leaders, the Port Authority decided to keep the discount temporarily and as of Thursday will in fact look into technology that works.

If it in fact pans out to be real, and something we can rely upon, we will take it seriously, Port Authority Chairman Kevin OToole said.

MORE:Demanding Answers: Gov. Murphy Vows To Speak With Port Authority About Plan To Scrap Carpool Discount

Port Authority officials said the tunnels and bridges saw record numbers in 2019. Others said if the carpool discount was promoted it could relieve some of that traffic.

Also, the Port Authority chairman would not directly answer Baker when asked about whether the agency would finally start promoting awareness of the carpool program. However, he did contradict Executive Director Rick Cotton who previously said few people carpool.

Carpooling is actually fairly well used. I mean, its what, 3% of the folks use it. I think people do notice and actually by moving this, moving the goal posts here, it is going to cost us about $17 million, so there is an impact to this. So, I think it is prominent, OToole said.

Its green. Its great for the environment. Its great for Manhattan to stop all the congestion, added Carol Cooper of Closter.

FLASHBACK: Port Authority: We Care About The Environment, But Still Taking Away The Carpool Discount, Hiking Fares

The Port Authority is hoping to eliminate manned toll booths by 2021, giving the agency a year to find a way to save the carpool discount, if it wants to.

Congressman Gottheimer said eliminating the carpool lane would cost New Jersey residents thousands of extra dollars a year in new tolls, add more cars to the bridges and tunnels and increase air pollution.

Universities at the forefront of technological innovation – Study International News

Posted: at 2:22 pm

Technological innovation can solve some of the worlds greatest challenges, from testing the physical and mental limits of the human body to advancing global efforts to tackle the climate crisis.

NextMindsbrain-sensing wearable device, for example, is believed to be first tool of its kind that allows devices to be controlled by thought alone.

The practical uses for such a device are staggering to say the least it could mean the ability to operate heavy machinery just by giving it orders through thought or even restoring mobility to those with disabilities or injuries.

The device, to be showcased at the coming Consumer Electronics Show in January 2020, is just one of the many awe-inspiring innovations expected to wow the global tech community at the annual trade show.

Also at CES 2020 will be tyre and mobility solution provider Continental, who will introduce its award-winning Transparent Hood innovation which uses an array of four cameras that grants drivers a clear view of the road directly in front of, and below the driver.

This is yet another innovation to watch, especially for its potential to greatly reduce the number of accidents where damage is caused to vehicles during parking, writes futurist, author and tech influencer Bernard Marr in Forbes.

Away from the commercial realm of consumer technology, technological innovations are also touted as capable of helping the world avert the worst consequences of the looming climate crisis.

According to European Investment Bank Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle, new innovations in clean energy and low-carbon technologies are the only way to get ahead of climate change.

In fact, innovation will be absolutely necessary for a successful transition to a green economy that leaves no one behind. Without it, we have less chance of achieving genuine sustainability, he wrote in a recent commentary for Project Syndicate.

But affecting real-world change is more than just pouring investment dollars into new technologies and business models or embedding innovation as the central pillar of national or regional economic models.

As with anything, it must begin with education.

Fayolle highlights this, saying the education and training models of today must keep pace with technological innovation in order to prepare todays learners for the unknowable future.

We should be cultivating the talents and intelligence of our youth, because it is they who will be developing the technologies and creating the jobs needed for the future, he says.

As the worlds talent incubators, it is the civic responsibility of universities to answer this call to action. And many have risen to the fore, offering future-focussed tech-based courses designed to help the leaders or tomorrow learn the ropes of positive disruption through technological innovation.
