GITGE – The New West African Technology Hub – Capacity Media
Posted: March 5, 2020 at 5:46 pm
8h | Sponsored Statement
Capacity heard from Gestor de Infraestructuras de Guinea Ecuatorial (GITGE) about the company's work in Equatorial Guinea
Q. How is Equatorial Guinea transforming into the next West Africa tech hub?
A tech hub is composed of an ecosystem. Connectivity is one art of the ecosystem, but education, and a culture of innovation is also key. We have been working hard on connectivity and today Equatorial Guinea is a key location as crossroad between Africa, Europe and theAmericas. Now we are working in bringing innovation through the creation of an innovation hub that will foster projects in education in science, technology and engineering orientated to African market and needs.
Q. How are the ACE, Ceiba-1, and Ceiba-2 subsea cables, along with the RNFO national fibre-optic backbone project, helping to boost this mission?
Having cost-effective broadband connectivity to the internet but also to our neighboring countries is key for the ecosystem development. Thanks to our systems of cables, we have direct connectivity to Europe, South Africa, the largest African markets as Nigeria as well as South America and the US. Under this positioning, Equatorial Guinea can be considered as a gateway for the African market.
Q. What new infrastructure will GITGE be responsiblefor over the coming 12 months that will further boost international connectivity in West Africa?
Looking at infrastructure, GITGE will continue deploying fibre networks, which are orientated to bring fibre broadband speeds to the citizens through the implementation of fibre-optic in the access, fibre to the home and providing large fibre connectivity for the operators deploying 4G and 5G networks in Equatorial Guinea. On West African connectivity, we will be building a direct branch to the SAIL cable, providing direct interconnection to the Americas and we are following closely the major submarine initiatives coming in West Africa in the next two years.
Q. What are GITGEs key strategic points of focus in 2020 with this mission statement?
GITGEs focus in 2020 and beyond is in triggering, from a connectivity point of view, the digital transformation in Equatorial Guinea. Digital transformation is about leveraging digitisation and digitalisation to transform our life, our business, and to innovate our way to approach to challenges and to our daily needs. In the current business environment, technology improves the businesses agility but also introduce means to innovate products and services, improving customer experience.
Q. How is GITGE working with international carriers and partners to leverage Equatorial Guinea as a tech hub?
GITGE is working actively with international carriers. GITGE has been and is present in the major telecommunications events and has started to be a player in the international market during 2019 and 2020. GITGE is working on a platform to make the use of international capacity from Equatorial Guinea to Africa from international carriers.
Dr. Oscar Ondo, is an entrepreneur and a revered thought leader in the African tech space. He currently serves as the Director-General of GITGE, Equatorial Guinea Fiber Optic Infrastructure Manager. He is extremely passionate about the promotion of the ICT industry in Sub Saharan Africa and works with the public and private sector to promote entrepreneurship, education and economic diversification throughout the ICT sector as well as improve access to internet and communications in rural and low-income urban areas.

SARATOGA COUNTY Middle school and high school students begin competing this month in the 2020 National Science Bowl, sponsored by the Department of Energy and managed by DOEs Office of Science, leading up to the National Championship in April 2020.
Buzzers, not bells, will ring in the New Year for thousands of middle- and high-school students all across the U.S. That's because they'll soon be pitting their math and science knowledge and their reflexes against one another in regional competitions of the Department of Energy's (DOE's) 30th National Science Bowl (NSB).
Students from Saratoga Springs High School and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School will be participating, among several other schools in the Albany area.
The competitions start this month, with four students from each team facing off in a fast-paced, question-and-answer format. (More information about the date and location of specific regionals can be found through the NSB Homepage). The winning team from each of the 50 middle- and 65 high-school regions will compete in the National Finals, held in Washington, D.C. from April 30 to May 4, 2020. At the Finals, winning teams can score exciting adventure trips to Alaska and national parks across the country to learn first-hand about science in the field, as well as trophies, medals, and supplies for their schools' science departments. But to many, the ultimate prize simply would be the prestige of winning the National Championship.
Each year, the NSB draws more than 14,700 middle- and high-school competitors. More than 305,000 students have faced off in the NSB Finals since the first competition in 1991. The knowledge that former NSB competitors have acquired and more importantly, the habits of study that they've learned along the way have led them to success in a variety of fields. Many have become researchers; others are science and math professors at some of our nation's most prestigious universities.
While those career paths might seem intuitive, the math and science knowledge students need to be successful in the NSB also can lead to successful careers in other fields. The 2020 NSB competitors will follow in the footsteps of previous National Science Bowl contestants, and will blaze a trail for students in science, math and engineering for the next quarter-century.
The National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students' knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Middle and high school student teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. These teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, physics, energy, and math. The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science manages the National Science Bowl and sponsors the NSB finals competition.
DOE's Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, please visit http://www.energy.gov/science.

‘Ban this technology’: students protest US universities’ use of facial recognition – The Guardian
Posted: at 5:46 pm
Students at universities across the United States participated in protests to demand their schools refrain from using facial recognition on campus.
The protests on Monday came after pushback led by students and digital rights group Fight for The Future against a proposed facial recognition program at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) led the school to reverse course and drop the technology. Students at around a dozen schools staged protests on campus in person this week while 36 schools saw online actions including petitions.
Colleges are becoming a flashpoint in the fight against facial recognition and we are really seeing a huge surge in students, professors, faculty and researchers organizing around this, said Evan Greer, the deputy director of Fight for the Future.
In 2019, UCLA administrators proposed using facial recognition software for security surveillance on campus. In a campaign against the program, Fight for the Future ran facial recognition technology on more than 400 photos of UCLA faculty members and athletes and found the software incorrectly matched 58 of those with photos in a mugshot database. The majority of those misidentified by the database were people of color.
Following the changes from UCLA, students at a number of universities across the US sought to push back against proposed or actual programs at their own schools. On Monday, students from nearly a dozen schools including Kent State University, DePaul University, Yale Law School and University of Oregon sent letters and emails to administrators expressing opposition to facial recognition program.
Dominique Coronel, a student at DePaul University who participated in the action said he was compelled as a first generation Mexican-American college student disturbed by deportations carried out by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) to speak out against the technology.
Now that we know (Ice) is likely using facial recognition, Im even more compelled to participate in campaigns to ban the technology from campuses, he said. Education should be a safe place, but this technology hurts the most vulnerable people in society.
Around 10 schools in the US are confirmed to be using facial recognition on campus, according to data from Fight for the Future, and even more have refused to say whether they are using it. About 50 schools, including Harvard, Columbia, University of Michigan, and most recently UCLA, have now committed to not using the technology after being pushed by Fight for the Future to take a stand publicly. Following Mondays day of action, Oberlin College in Ohio also committed to not using facial recognition technology.
At the heart of the campaign on Monday is an attempt to get more clarity around which schools use the technology, and which have pledged not to use it, Greer said, and ultimately action from legislators.
In the end, it shouldnt be up to some campus safety officer or even a college president or administrator to make decisions like this without having all the facts or knowing all the potential risks of implementing such a system, she said. This underscores the broad need for lawmakers to get off their asses, and do their jobs, and pass legislation to ban the use of this technology.

GM Came Out Swinging Against Tesla With Its Electric-Vehicle Technology – Barron’s

General Motors has big electric-vehicle ambitions, and Wall Street appears to be impressed.
GM comes out swinging against Tesla, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives wrote in a Wednesday evening research report, following the companys electric-vehicle technology presentation near Detroit earlier in the day.
Ives covers Tesla (ticker: TSLA) stock but not General Motors (GM). He was interested in what the state of EV technology is at a traditional auto maker that predominantly builds gasoline-powered vehicles. We believe the event was a clear shot across the bow against [Elon] Musk and Tesla, which continues to lead the EV landscape by a clear margin.
Even though Ives thinks Tesla is in the lead, he said Musks company has to take GM seriously in this EV arms race.
GM CEO Mary Barra said Wednesday that from 2020 to 2025, we will allocate more than $20 billion of capital and engineering resources to our EV and [autonomous vehicle] programs. Our investments are delivering real results and as you will see here today, they will dramatically change the future of this company and of our industry.
GM wants to sell 1 million electric vehicles annually by the middle of the 2030s. It should be noted that Tesla plans to sell 500,000 electric vehicles in 2020. Thats part of the lead Ives mentioned.
GMs EV day should help show investors that GM is serious about decarbonization and has a strong plan, RBC analyst Joe Spak wrote in a Thursday research report. He noted that GM is planning to offer 20 battery-powered models by 2023. Spak is a GM bull, rating shares the equivalent of Buy. His price target is $49 for GM stock. Spak is also a Telsa skeptic. He ratse Tesla stock the equivalent of Sell and has a $530 price target for shares.
J.P. Morgan analyst Ryan Brinkman has the same rating structure on the stocksbuy GM, sell Tesla. GM showcased its work on a next generation of batteries it calls Ultium which possess performance characteristics when mated to its new drive units that we estimate are at least on par with or even exceed that of the most advanced competition, he wrote in a Thursday research report.
Brinkman noted that GM says its batteries can travel up to 400 miles on a charge without compromising performance, such as rapid acceleration. Telsas base Model 3 will go about 320 miles on one charge. That is one data point in favor of GM, but apples to apple comparisons are difficult. Factors such as how many battery cells are included in a cars battery pack isnt known. EVs, in theory, can increase range by adding battery cells. That, of course, adds cost and weight.
GM made a compelling presentation that it will be among the leaders globally in electric vehiclesand made a compelling case that along with its partner LG Chem, its battery science was at the leading edge, Benchmark analyst Mike Ward said in an interview. If Tesla made this presentation there is no telling where the stock would trade.
Thats a funny line. Ward has a point, though. Tesla stock is up 171% over the past year, crushing comparable returns of the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average. Shares trade for about 89 times estimated 2020 earnings. GM shares, on the other hand, trade for about 5 times estimate earnings and are down about 21% over the past year.
GM partners with LG Chem (051910.Korea) on battery technology. Teslas battery partner is Panasonic (6752.Japan).
