New York, Dec. 28, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Reportlinker.com announces the release of the report "Technology and Sustainability to Drive Recovery in the UK Facility Management Market" - https://www.reportlinker.com/p06000031/?utm_source=GNW The UK FM market is one of the most developed and mature in the world, with a highly competitive international supply base.
With FM services commoditizing and organic growth hard to find, companies need to innovate to keep growing and remain profitable. The industry will continue to move towards service integration and sophisticated advisory services focused on business productivity, and M&A activities will continue.Meanwhile, COVID-19 is having a severe effect on all customer sectors. The UK FM market will see a revenue drop of 5.8% in 2020 as a result of the impact of the pandemic. The market will return to growth in 2021, but will not reach 2019 levels until late 2021. The UK FM market has evolved to become the largest in Europe and one of the most competitive in the world. However, competition is fierce, and both growth and margins are under pressure from commoditisation and customers. There are opportunities for companies that target the highest growth services and sectors, but there are also significant challenges for those that fail to adapt. Meanwhile, collaboration and partnership are increasingly critical as the UK market becomes disrupted by technology and new business models. Boomer’s Blueprint: The technology physical – Accounting Today

Hindsight provides valuable lessons on how firms can become more innovative and confident in their ability to change and grow. When faced with challenges, I recommend looking back and documenting the progress you have made over the past three, five or 10 years.
This reflection on the past should provide you with the courage and commitment to take on both current and future challenges.
With that thought in mind, I decided to look back at older articles I wrote forAccounting Today. I quickly zeroed in on an article I wrote approximately 20 years ago that is extremely relevant in todays environment. It demonstrates how mindsets toward technology have changed especially in the last year. I revised and updated the related Technology Physical checklist (see page 26) to reflect the current capabilities and strategies employed by firms and businesses that have been able to sustain success and remain future-ready. Here are some key findings from looking back.
Technology management and governance
Firms that manage technology as an asset rather than overhead achieve higher levels of return. This thinking has advanced from managing annual technology budgets to a more sophisticated approach of recharacterizing technology budgets into investment portfolios.
Todays rapid pace of change in business and technology makes it difficult, if not impossible, to predict an organizations priorities or properly allocate money and resources a year in advance. In a new mindset, resources are allocated to the highest-value business outcomes. This can be technology but also includes leadership, processes, talent and growth of the business. This does not mean firms dont have a budget or a technology roadmap. It does mean firms are continually evaluating priorities, outcomes and future spending.
This is often referred to as more of a Shark Tank approach. All major projects should be run through a leadership team, and ownership of the project should be with service leaders or firm management, not the CIO and technology department. This will result in a higher success rate, with adequate resources and focus being allocated to priority projects. The current pandemic has demonstrated how rapidly firm priorities can change and how important technology is to success. Agility, urgency and flexibility are required.
Performance evaluations
Much is being discussed about the change in performance evaluations, upskilling and coaching. These positive changes also apply to IT professionals. Twenty years ago, the focus was on a career path and certifications for IT personnel. Today, IT professionals are contributing team members, team leaders and even firm leaders.
Over the past 20 years, the best firm leaders have recognized the need for technology to have a seat at the table. This has resulted in the need for IT professionals to develop beyond the technical and focus on communications, marketing of ideas, business savvy, financial skills and team building. Performance now is measured by team goals and shared outcomes. Previously, IT was built upon areas of competency with delineation such as applications, infrastructure, help desk, networks, project managers and architects.
Today there is a greater need for internal and external collaboration and accountability. Team goals take precedence over individual goals with ongoing feedback from multiple sources. In summary, more upfront visioning, planning, transparency and accountability are required.
Management of technical debt
Firms were not aware of this concept 20 years ago, and many in the accounting profession are still uneducated about technical debt. Technical debt is a term that refers to the intentional or unintentional violation of optimal coding or architecture practices, and it manifests itself in concessions or shortcuts in software and architecture that may need to be paid back later.
Examples in the accounting profession are the deferring of hardware, software, training and process improvements to a later date, thinking this will maximize current earnings. Ultimately you need to address technical debt, and training and processes may be the most impactful. The old saying goes, Its what you dont know you dont know that can be the costliest mistake. Members of our CIO Circles have been discussing technical debt for about seven years, but it has been difficult in many firms to get the partners attention. Firms must address technical debt irrespective of the source while balancing current earnings. This is why portfolio management is so important today.
Despite the best intentions, there will never be enough time for teams to address technical debt new projects always take precedence. Establishing a cadence for making it part of their normal workflow by dedicating a percentage of the teams time to addressing it is the only viable option.
The hybrid world
Twenty years ago, the cloud was not an option. Today it is the best option, yet most accounting firms are forced to operate in a hybrid environment. We often refer to the hybrid world as the fog, which requires more resources for keeping the lights on and less for innovation. Much of this is the responsibility of the core application vendors who were slow to move to the cloud because they had a captive audience. Most are publishing companies with a software division and were slow to react.
The core issue in a hybrid world is dealing with legacy applications on outdated platforms, out-of-support versions of software, and old architectures. Firms should have clear strategies and a roadmap for dealing with this issue.
The physical
The Technology Physical Checklist (below) is a way to assess your firm. Remember, progress trumps perfection. If your firm scored poorly and sincerely wants to improve, resources are available. Most firms will benefit from professional assistance in technology management, especially when it comes to talent, processes and plan development. There is no need to reinvent the wheel or do this on your own. Outside assistance will save time and get the firm to focus on strategic rather than tactical issues. It is normal to experience five distinct stages upon completion of your score:1. Skepticism;2. Defensiveness;3.Inquisitiveness;4.Being scared; and,5. Courage and commitment to improve.
Fortunately, technology is available for virtual or physical assistance from external resources. This approach reduces time and procrastination, identifies dangers, opportunities and strengths, builds consensus, and focuses on priorities. Small changes in mindsets, skill sets and toolsets can produce exponential results.
Think plan grow!

How technology will help to shape the future of work in 2021 and beyond – The Star Online
Posted: at 12:30 am
No one could have predicted what 2020 would bring. Across every industry, we have learned the true meaning of digital transformation. That is, reimagining businesses to better serve customers and understand their needs, and having the agility to respond to changing circumstances. Where many organisations may previously have thought that digital transformation was a nice-to-have, today it is an imperative.
With a new year will come a new set of challenges. While there will always be unknowns, we can expect businesses to increasingly look to technology to help them survive, recover and grow. Flexibility will be key to delivering the digital-first experiences that customers and employees demand. Access to data and artificial intelligence (AI) tools will help companies to revolutionise their customer experience.
Serving the digital-first customer
In 2020 we learned just how quickly consumers can adapt new technologies to stay connected with loved ones, to shop, and access essential services online. As market trends and customer expectations evolve faster than ever, in 2021 businesses must innovate at pace. Were likely witnessing the end of the two- to three-year digital transformation project; value needs to be delivered within months. In the digital economy, speed of implementation, cost and value to the organisation and to customers, as well as competitiveness will measure the success of digital transformation.
As demand for online retail and consumer goods increases, with global digital revenues having grown by 54% year-to-date, so will companies use of AI-powered technologies to engage and serve customers. Beyond restaurants and health service providers, for instance, well see the continued rise of the appointment economy, guaranteeing convenience virtually and in-person. Bots, too, should become an integral part of company strategies to support customers 24/7. From virtual try-ons to smarter delivery and pickup options, every customer experience must be connected, personalised and seamless from whatever device theyre using, and whichever store theyre visiting.
Fuelling the needs of todays customer
Covid-19 presented a moment of truth for businesses. Many were not as streamlined and resilient as they thought. In 2021, saving costs while boosting resilience will be top-of-mind for every chief information officer and business leader. We can expect the simplifying, streamlining and digitalising of processes including channel portfolios. Take, for example, the financial sector where banks may close a significant proportion of brick-and-mortar branches. How companies seek to provide all of the services and experiences that customers expect on their smartphones instead will have far-reaching impact upon their business models.
Companies leveraging cloud computing have shown us what it means to be resilient in times of crisis. These migrations will only accelerate in 2021 enabling scalability, availability and accessibility of information from any location. When, where, and how a company deploys these tools will set leaders ahead of the pack. Increased automation, AI, as well as forecasting models will help them to better predict and prepare for what the future may bring. To make the most of these technologies, data literacy skills must be foundational to every role at every level of an organisation.
The evolution of work-from-anywhere
Its fair to say that how we work has changed forever. Take health and safety, for instance. While many people will continue to work from home throughout 2021, ensuring the wellbeing of those who do return to physical workplaces will require a huge cross-functional effort. We can expect the office experience to be recreated, to become more intentional. The ways that companies communicate will evolve also. Those which have opened unprecedented access to their leadership team, providing regular updates to keep teams informed, engaged and productive, will want to keep these lines of communication open as we emerge from the pandemic.
With regard to where we work, this year has shown that working from home can be a legitimate option. In 2021 and beyond, it's important for employers to continue to explore new, flexible work models. At my organisation, we recently created the position of "VP, Work From Anywhere". This person will be in charge of developing programmes and policies to support new and inclusive ways of working for those people who continue to work from home (or anywhere). We can expect businesses to create new HR packages and technical capabilities to attract and retain the hybrid worker as well as brands to market new products which tailor to their lifestyle needs. Flexible arrangements can offer greater work-life balance and create a more equal workplace by increasing talent pools.
Platform for change
We are in the midst of several crises at once: a health crisis, an economic crisis, and climate crisis. The importance of a businesss role in corporate citizenship has been cemented and the urgency for businesses to give back to communities has never been greater. Solutions like technology, trees and collaboration will all play an important role in reimagining how we do business and create the change that the planet needs. Together, we can take this moment to invest in a more resilient and inclusive economy. In 2021, the role of business as a platform for change will no longer be the exception, but the standard.

Tech platforms vowed to address racial equity: how have they fared? – The Guardian
Posted: at 12:30 am
Following the death of George Floyd and nationwide protests against police brutality and racial inequality, some of the largest technology corporations waded into the anti-racism movement with slickly worded corporate declarations that Black Lives Matter.
Those tech platforms are now facing increased pressure to back those promises with action both on and off their platforms.
The bar is high, and the real focus now is seeing what is going to happen beyond the public statements, said Yumeka Rushing, chief strategy officer at the NAACP. This isnt a moment, its a movement, and its going to take a lot of effort to move the needle on systemic racism.
Heres which companies are doing and not doing to follow through on their commitments to diversity and antiracism in 2020.
What they promised: The company committed to increasing the number of black people in leadership positions by 30% in the next five years and doubling the number of black and Latinx employees overall by 2023.
What theyve done so far: Facebook committed more than $200m to support black businesses and organizations. That comes as part of a total investment from Facebook of $1.1bn in black and diverse suppliers and communities in the US, according to a Facebook spokesman. It committed an additional $10m to racial justice organizations, including non-profits that help people of color in legal and professional spheres. It also launched an internal diversity council consisting of 18 employees that will meet quarterly to consult on content policies, product and other programs.
The company in 2020 rolled out changes to hate speech enforcement on the platform, including prohibiting a wider range of hate speech in ads and banned content depicting blackface from the site. More changes are rumored to be on the horizon but have not yet been formally announced.
While there is always more to do in pursuit of equality and racial justice, we will continue to listen, learn and take action to support the Black community, said Bertie Thomson, a spokesman for Facebook.
Ongoing criticisms: Despite strides in its handling of misinformation, Facebook still faces criticism for allowing hate speech on the platform and for not strictly enforcing bans on calls to violence, whether they are from the president of the United States or private groups organizing militias and off-site violence.
I am wholly unimpressed with its approach overall, and I remain concerned that they refuse to take claims of people calling for violence seriously, said Jessica J Gonzlez, co-founder anti hate speech group Change the Terms.
Change the Terms was one of several groups that organized an advertiser boycott of Facebook that ultimately led to many of the policy changes implemented this year. Gonzlez said Facebooks years-long inactionmakes it difficult for the company to catch up to standards expected by groups like hers.
The reason that we had to push Facebook so hard this year in the first place was because they utterly failed for years, she said. They have been shockingly selfish and devoted to the bottom line above all else.
Facebook has also has been called on by former content moderators, who are disproportionately people of color, to improve their benefits and treatments.
What they promised: In June 2020 Twitter further committed to diverse hires, aiming for women to represent half of its workforce by 2025 and for underrepresented minorities to comprise 25% of its US workforce. As of May 2020 women represented just 42% of its workforce, Latinx at 5.1% and black representation reached 6.3%.
What theyve done so far: The company in 2020 banned a number of well-known racists from the platform, including David Duke, the leader of US hate group the Ku Klux Klan whose presence on the platform had been criticized for more than a decade. It also banned the former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon, who has been criticized for espousing racist and sexist viewsand for threatening violence on the platform.
It also became one of the first platforms to address blatant lies and calls for violence tweeted byDonald Trump when it censored his tweet calling for the shooting of people looting after protests.
In December Twitter announced it would now include race, ethnicity, national origin, and caste as categories protected in its dehumanization policy, after more than a year of pressure from the civil rights group Color of Change.
The company committed $100m in investment plus an additional $1m grant to the Opportunity Finance Networks Finance Justice Fund in an aim to bring capital and investment to Americas most underserved communities.
Ongoing criticisms: Off the platform, Twitter has committed to diverse hiring practices, and the company admittedly made many strides in 2020 towards addressing concerns raised for years by activists. But it faces continued criticism for failing to address a large amount of hate speech on the platform and allowing misinformation to circulate, especially in recent weeks.
Twitter did a decent job this year but it does seem like they just gave up after the election got called by major media, Gonzlez of Change the Terms said.
What they promised: The company announced a $100m creators fund to help amplify black creators and artists.
What theyve done so far: A number of videos have come out of the creators fund. Also this year, YouTube suspended the account of the Proud Boys founder, Gavin McInnes. It also suspended other white nationalist and extremist channels, including those associated with American Renaissance, Richard Spencer, Stefan Molyneux and David Duke.
YouTube said starting in 2021 it will ask creators to share, on a voluntary basis, their gender, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity to allow the company to more closely examine search and discovery on the platform as well as monetization as they relate to race.
As of 3 December, the company is testing a new feature to automatically filter inappropriate and hurtful comments before creators have to read them. It will soon launch a feature that automatically flags comments for offensive language and prompts a user to reconsider before posting.
Ongoing criticisms: The video platform has been a breeding ground for racism in the past, giving rise to an entire ecosystem of far-right influencers. In June, a group of black creators sued YouTube for racial discrimination, alleging the company limits how much they can earn from advertisers. YouTube has been widely criticized for its lack of action on misinformation surrounding the 2020 elections and only made substantial changes relating to the issue in days following the national vote.
What they promised: Google committed to improving leadership representation of underrepresented groups by 30% by 2025. Googles workforce is 51.7% white and 3.7% black, according to its 2020 diversity report. It also promised to do more to address representation challenges by hiring new people in positions dedicated to the progression and retention of Googlers from underrepresented groups.
What theyve done so far: Google made a series of financial commitments to improve racial equity totaling more than $350m, including financing and grants for black business owners, funding for education in the tech world, and cash donations to non-profits.
Ongoing criticisms: Google has been criticized in the past for the lack of racial diversity among its staff, as well as for racial bias in its algorithms. It has also faced criticism from its own employees over partnerships with police forces, including being a donor to the Seattle police department. In December more than 1,000 workers at Google condemned the company for its firing of a black ethics expert after she accused the company of censorship and criticized the way it treated her and other staff of underrepresented backgrounds.
What they promised: Under pressure from activists, the company announced a one-year moratorium on selling its facial recognition technology to police forces. Set a goal to double the representation of black VPs and directors at Amazon in 2020 again in 2021.
What theyve done so far: Amazon has donated $10m to social justice organizations related to civil rights issues and fighting racism and appointed a number of diverse candidates to top leadership positions in recent months including Alicia Boler Davis, Raymond Leon Roker and Ukonwa Ojo.
At Amazon, were constantly learning and innovating and our long-term efforts in diversity and inclusion are no different, a spokeswoman told the Guardian.
Ongoing criticisms: Amid a racially charged movement to defund the police, the company faces continued criticism for its partnerships with police through its smart doorbell Ring, which allows police to request footage and images from citizens doorbells. There are currently more than 1,400 police partnerships with Ring in the US. In the six months since Floyd was killed, Amazon has established more than 280 new partnerships with local police departments.
Saying the right thing, and doing the right thing, are two different things, said Steven Renderos, executive director of MediaJustice. If tech platforms are serious about ending systemic racism, they should also be serious about not arming the police with tools to engage in systemic surveillance.
Amazon has also faced labor complaints from employees of color. In July a worker named Hibaq Mohamed in Minnesota made waves after it was revealed that managers at her facility had targeted her repeatedly with what appeared to be bogus time off task violations, including for Covid-related precautions such as hand-washing that Amazon had previously said wouldnt be held against workers time off quotas. She is still just one warning away from being fired. More than a dozen workers at Amazon-owned Whole Foods have also filed a lawsuit claiming they were fired for wearing Black Lives Matters masks.

This technology could start saving lives tomorrow, but the Nationals won’t let it happen – Sydney Morning Herald
Posted: at 12:30 am
While NSW Police do their best, they can't have eyes everywhere.
Every year thousands of people are breaking the law by speeding. As the Herald reported 10 years ago, they are getting away scott free because NSW is the only state in Australia that refuses to switch on point-to-point speed averaging cameras for motorists.
NSW only uses these fixed cameras for heavy vehicles, over 4.5 tonnes. That's caused a 44 per cent reduction in deaths from crashes, enough to justify extending them for heavy vehicles on the M7 and elsewhere in 2021.

This technology could start saving lives tomorrow especially on country roads where about 45 per cent of fatal crashes occur in NSW.
The NSW Centre for Road Safety found there were 1,268 fatal crashes involving speed, resulting in the deaths of 1,388 people from 2008 to 2016 and about 12,000 serious injuries from 2008 to 2015.
A decade ago, the then minister for roads, the Nationals' Duncan Gay, signed the national road safety plan which endorsed point-to-point speed enforcement.
Loading
It has never been implemented in NSW for vehicles except for trucks. The Herald reported in 2011 that 94, 271 drivers of vehicles had been detected speeding on country roads by these cameras, but never fined.
What happened? Is it because point-to-point is unfair? Nope. UNSW emeritus professor and road safety expert Professor Raphael Grzebieta says it is fairer because it doesn't penalise drivers for momentary lapses but only for speeding for an extended time.
Did it lack supporting research? No. The road safety plan included evaluations showing it reduced deaths and serious injuries. In the UK, reductions in the number of people killed or seriously injured typically exceeded 50 per cent. A review of the ACT system found improvements happened nearly overnight.
The Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge were illuminated in yellow for road safety week in November yet experts say a well proven method of saving lives is not being used in NSW for political reasons.
Did it make trips longer? No, a report by the European Union found it resulted in smoother traffic.
Did it lack support? Apart from NSW's NRMA, every other road safety research and motorist group around Australia has endorsed it. Australian states continue to report on its success.
So what stopped speed averaging being extended to vehicles in NSW? The NSW Nationals, say Professor Grzebieta and Harold Scruby, the head of the Pedestrian Council of Australia. "It is worse than a joke, it is criminal what they have done," says Scruby. "These Nationals have more excuses than a pregnant nun."
Australia's experience with COVID, especially in NSW, has proven that listening to research and science pays off. Isn't it time we extended the same standard to road safety? Beep beep.

Tackling unforeseen situations along with technological advancements – The Tribune India

Tribune News Service
Amritsar, December 28
Bittu Kumar (50), an automobile mechanic at Ram Bagh, had a set routine for the past 35 years, but the lockdown has forced him to tackle unforeseen situations along with technological advancements in automobile sector.
I started training with a scooter mechanic at Ann Amm Cinema Market in 1985. That was the era of mopeds and two-stroke engines, especially scooters. Now the engines are four-stroke, technically advance, equipped with sensors. It is day-to-day challenge for us to keep ourselves updated.
Being a religious person, Bittu visits temple in the morning and then opens his shop at 9 am.
Bittu said, We get more customers in summer. The two-wheeler owners, who also have cars, stop using bikes in winter season. The engine faces snag with summer heat and winter season is not good for us.
He said, The region witness extreme cold in December and January. I open shop in the morning and then burn bonfire outside the shop to keep ourselves warm. Then customers start visiting for repair job. I close my shop at 8 pm.
Bittu witnessed a major blow during the lockdown. Three months of lockdown were scary for me. I had no other source of income. We earn daily and buy grocery in the evening. There were no major savings. The market is recovering slowly. A large number of workers lost their jobs. Educational institutes are still closed. It will take time for the situation to normalise.
I have spent my life learning about the upgradation of automobile technology. Motorcycles are being replaced by four-stroke scooters and e-bikes are also in trend. Thus, its a challenging job, he added.

Rebekah Jones named Forbes Technology Person of The Year – Florida Politics
Posted: at 12:30 am
Forbes has named former Department of Health data specialist Rebekah Jones its Technology Person of the Year.
Jones rose to national prominence in May when the Department of Health fired her for what Gov. Ron DeSantis administration called insubordination. However, Jones contends department officials asked her to manipulate data to make it appear as if the state was ready to begin reopening. She claims she was fired for refusing the request.
She again captured the nations attention earlier this month when Department of Law Enforcement officers searched her home and seized her hardware after connecting her address to a security breech at DOH. Jones denies involvement in the hack and has sued the DeSantis administration, arguing the search was ordered as a punishment.
Regardless, she is the latest technologist who stepped up to fill the vacuum left by governments during COVID-19, wrote Forbes deputy technology editor Helen A.S. Popkin.
As DOHs geographic information systems manager, Jones played a leading role in designing the states COVID-19 dashboard, officials primary vehicle for disseminating coronavirus updates to the general public. The dashboard drew praise from White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator Dr.Deborah Birxin April.
Since being fired, Jones has launched her own COVID-19 dashboard tracking cases in schools and across the country.
With the inaugural Forbes Technology Awards which comes at the end of a year when Americans relied on technology more than ever Jones is the first ever recipient of the magazines Technology Person of the Year distinction.
The afternoon following the morning raid on Dec. 7, Jones tweeted a videoshowing officers serving the warrant.
They pointed a gun in my face. They pointed guns at my kids, she said. They took my phone and the computer I use every day to post the case numbers in Florida, and school cases for the entire country. They took evidence of corruption at the state level. They claimed it was about a security breach. This was DeSantis. He sent the gestapo.
This is what happens to scientists who do their job honestly, she continued. This is what happens to people who speak truth to power. I tell them my husband and my two children are upstairs and THEN one of them draws his gun. On my children. This is Desantis Florida.
The ongoing battle between Jones and the DeSantis administration has inflamed tensions between the media and the Governor, who has consistently opposed mask requirements and government-mandated lockdowns. In May, DeSantis accused national outlets of latching onto the story with claims that coronavirus outbreaks would balloon in Florida.
Following the search at Jones home, the Governor attacked a Tampa reporter for asking about a police raid, calling that term disinformation.
She was not cooperative, DeSantis critiqued. It was not a raid. It was serving valid process in accordance with the laws and the Constitution of the United States and the state of Florida. They did it with integrity. They did it with honor.
In her subsequent lawsuit, Jones alleges state police violated her First, Fourth, and Fourteenth Amendments rights. Shes also alleged violations against state law.
She is seeking damages of more than $30,000, according to the lawsuit. She is represented by attorneys Rick Johnsonof Tallahassee,Lawrence Waltersof Longwood andLisa Lambertof Atlanta.

Vaccines are the latest battleground for doctors on social media – MIT Technology Review
Posted: at 12:30 am
For a long time, anti-vaccine misinformation pushers have used anecdotes to back up false claims: YouTube videos of mothers discussing how they believe a vaccine had harmed their child, for instance, or personal stories of conversion by medical professionals who, having left science-based medicine behind, now make careers by selling information that they claim the medical industry doesnt want you to know.
But the narratives of medical professionals getting vaccinated work because they feel personal. Honesty about the experience, and potential side effects, can help set expectations and open up communication among those who might otherwise be prime targets for anti-vaccine propaganda.
When we talk about vaccine hesitancy, its more of a spectrum, says Kolina Koltai, a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington.
Yes, there are anti-vaccine activists. But there are many others who, for one reason or another, arent so sure they want to take this vaccine, but generally think of themselves as pro-science. Maybe they heard that the process was rushed. Maybe their community has a good reason for not trusting doctors. Maybe they just dont know a lot about how the vaccine was developed. This is the audience that both anti-vaccine activists and those attempting to end the pandemic are trying to reach.
Here you have medical professions putting out Hey, I got this shot. Heres what the side effects are, heres how I think about the side effects versus getting covid, says DiResta.
Those stories can matter, but sharing them is not without risk. Anti-vaccine activists online have a long history of inciting mob harassment against their targets, including medical professionals and others who promote the safety of vaccines.
They span the moment into a false claim that the nurse had died, and suggested the hospital where she worked was covering it up
An even bigger risk, Koltai cautions, is the decontextualization of authentic stories in order to promote a false narrative. One nurse at a Chattanooga hospital fainted on camera in mid-December after getting the vaccinethe result of an existing medical condition that can cause her to feel faint as a response to pain. That didnt matter to anti-vaccine circles online, which took the dramatic image of her fainting and ran with it. The false claim was that the nurse had died and the hospital where she worked was covering it up.
