When the Texas power crisis hit in February, my family and I were among the millions of people stuck in a deadly blackout in freezing temperatures because of a massive electricity generation failure. Certain areas of the grid, like hospitals, remained illuminated to support critical infrastructure, but this also meant that nearby empty skyscrapers kept power that otherwise could have been redirected to residents in their homes and others who needed it.
These problems arent limited to Texas. As I write this, devastating wildfires along the West Coast are threatening the power supply of millions more and forcing the energy system to adapt fast. Were seeing more frequent severe weather events due to the impacts of climate change.
When crises strike, one of the most important elements for recovery is reliable power. However, our outdated energy grid lacks the ability to direct energy where it is needed most during these crises. Instead, current solutions to mitigate the outdated grid include turning off energy lines and implementing rolling blackouts to avoid further devastation. But those solutions are unsustainable, archaic and of little comfort if youre reduced to boiling water over an open fire.
The current energy grid structure is vulnerable and difficult for providers to navigate. It was built to support a one-way flow of mostly carbon-based power from centralized sources. It doesnt have the ability to quickly pivot in times of need or to support the 100% renewable energy critical to meet global climate goals like President Bidens proposal to create acarbon pollution-free power sector by 2035.
We must move to renewable energy sources and build a smarter grid. For this, Intel has created a technology solution to drastically simplify the grid, making it more dependable, adaptable and efficient.
Increased Usage of Renewable Energy Sources
To mitigate climate-change impacts, we need a grid that can better support renewable energy. Not only will these sources create a clean energy future, but they are distributed at the edge of the grid and across multiple areas. The result is a more resilient grid that is no longer dependent on power sources in a central location that can create potentially devastating bottlenecks in times of emergency.
We also need a smarter grid. It must support omni-directional flow both from and to the source of generation, which renewable energy sources require, and balance for intermittent energy (like solar and wind) in real time. This gives the energy provider the flexibility to distribute energy where and when it is needed most, while giving customers the information needed to make environmentally conscious and cost-effective energy choices.
The transformation to a smart grid may seem daunting, but our solution drastically simplifies it. Ambitious climate action has already turned the electric delivery model upside down and the industry is currently going through a rapid and massive evolution.
Intel Technology as the Key Enabler for Smart Grid Solutions
My team at Intel has been working on a first-of-its-kind compute solution that can be easily deployed into the existing infrastructure to create a smarter grid and readily adapt to changing energy consumption needs. Our solution implements artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into the existing system, thereby flattening the grid and allowing the market to determine the highest and best energy source, regardless of its physical location on the grid. A flat grid enables 100% adoption of clean, renewable and intermittent energy to be integrated into real-time energy markets.
Currently, utility operations have layers of applications that have been added over time and do not always work cohesively. Our software-defined technology consolidates these applications into a single platform while also supporting new energy workloads, like enabling clean sources distributed at the edge of the grid. This platform includes AI-enabled decision-making to sense and learn optimal load balancing across a distributed set of intermittent, clean energy resources. A containerized approach ensures the applications remain isolated and secure. This platform reduces capital costs by avoiding waste and distributing energy in the most efficient way possible. It also reduces operating costs by offering insight into each substation and supporting predictive maintenance.
Collaborating to Optimize the Energy Grid
Intel has been working with governments, businesses and utilities around the globe to implement these smart grid solutions. In Europe, were working with eight major electric utilities to develop a flexible, manageable smart grid called theEdge for Smart Secondary Substation (E4S) Alliance. In the United States, were working with Southern California Edison to transform electrical substation relays into virtualized applications decreasing deployment and maintenance costs while providing cybersecurity services for a more flexible, safe and modern grid. And in Malaysia, we are collaborating with Tenaga Nasional Berhad on the digitalization of its electric grid, with a focus on virtualized computing infrastructure and applications for the substation and grid system.
Increasing renewable energy consumption and enabling clean energy options is a key part of the sustainability pillar in IntelsRISE strategy, but reinventing the grid is a challenge that is too big to tackle alone. Travelers can keep boarding passes in their bags. TSA's new CAT machines can identify travelers and if they're flying with just a driver's license.
TAMPA, Fla. There have been many changes to air travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, like wearing masks and increased social distancing on planes. However, there are also new changes coming to the technology used at Transportation Security Administration's checkpoints.
"We have the credential authentication technology, called the CAT machine, which is a step up from our boarding pass scanner," TSA Federal Security Director for the Greater Tampa Bay area, Kirk Skinner said. "When CAT looks at the identification, it brings up the picture and it validates for the officer who they're talking to."
In other words, you won't need to scan your boarding pass at the initial checkpoint.
"Now you can use your identification to real-time verify that you are who you say you are, and it also verifies that you have a flight today," Skinner explained.
You will still have to show your boarding pass at the gate or the terminal entrance, but not to the TSA agent at the checkpoint. If you have children without IDs to scan, they are still covered.
"Minors with their parents aren't required to have an ID, but they're with their family, so we use the boarding pass scanner to make sure their boarding pass is valid," Skinner said.
Around 30,000 travelers pass through the Tampa International Airport every day.
"Of course, we're still recovering from 2020 COVID, and our numbers actually fell by about 50% from 2019. Right now we're about 95% of where we were in 2019," Skinner described. "We expect the holidays could be big numbers for us, but with the resurgence of COVID, the delta variant, it's difficult for us to project."
The average wait time at TPA's security checkpoints is 10 minutes. TSA says they have not had a wait at TPA longer than 30 minutes in the past three years. The new technology removes human error almost entirely, cutting down on wait times and eliminating some steps.
"When you take the human being out of the process, there is less of a chance that a mistake is made, you're going to miss somebody with a different name, or the picture isn't going to match. The name looks the same but the picture is different," Skinner explained. "Catching a fraudulent identification is actually pretty difficult. Our folks are trained in that but it's always a challenge."
Thorough security at airports, especially TPA, is a must. In 2019, TSA intercepted 87 firearms at TPA. That year, the airport was No. 10 in the nation for the most firearms found at security checkpoints. Numbers show the airport could be on track to make the list again this year.
"To date this year, we've had 78. We've still got six weeks to go, so we may have as many firearms this year as we've had in the past, which is typical for us," Skinner said.
Having a firearm at the airport will mean getting law enforcement involved. Depending on the state of the firearm, if it's loaded, could mean going to jail.
"Law enforcement takes over the weapon and they take over the process of discussing it with the passenger," Skinner explained. "If they have a concealed carry, they are given the opportunity to put it in their vehicle or give it to a companion that isn't traveling. If they don't have a concealed carry, they usually leave here accompanied by law enforcement and end up with an arrest."
Even if you don't get arrested after bringing a firearm to the checkpoint, TSA says they investigate every case with a civil action for regulatory compliance.Fines can be upward of $13,000.
TSA says these incidents are usually accidents. People often forget to take them out of their bags before traveling. However, it shows the need for continuously updated security, starting at the initial checkpoint.
The CAT machines are being phased in, so you may still have to scan your boarding pass. You can expect to see them at all checkpoints at TPA by December.
"We're doing this for you, for your protection, and that process requires a partnership between my officers and the passengers, so bring your patience and leave your temper at home," Skinner said.

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MIAT College of Technology and Mnemonic Agency recently received a Gold Telly 2021 Award in the Local TV General-Schools/Colleges/Universities category for their collaborative development of MIATs Climb Above the Cubicle marketing video. Automation can be ambiguous: there is value in the weak ties that we build when we buy a cup of coffee in person instead of through an app. Not all processes must be automated in order to work best.
But processes in the workplace are different. And the ones we dont realize are processes end up taking longer, exposing more risk, and, at the end of the day, making our lives a little bit worse.
Every signed document, for example, is part of a larger story: approvals are almost always involved, and before approvals discussion, and before collaboration someones request. Often, these processes dont feel like larger stories because we just see ourselves touch one part of them, usually through our email inbox.
The same is true for spreadsheets: what may seem like a single location where information is stored is more often a place where the information drifts up ad hoc requests, shared ownership, and non-required fields make spreadsheets a huge source of error. The way to improve on a spreadsheet is to remember that, like a contract, it is the end of the process, not the process itself.
One of the most important steps a company takes when it embraces digital transformation and enterprise automation is to begin seeing processes for what they are, and to begin seeing tasks and outputs as part of larger processes.
Legacy products and homegrown solutions, which understand that a process is a process, require heavy IT involvement and support, limiting how many processes can be streamlined in a given period. They also tend to involve higher maintenance and updating costs.
Digital transformation as a watchword asks us to think beyond outdated solutions and pieces that arent already conceived of as processes. It demands that we zoom out and look at the bigger picture: how the various pieces that touch us and our work touch each other. HIMSS21: Technology needs to be at the center of health equity efforts, Google, Kaiser Permanente execs say – FierceHealthcare

LAS VEGASThe COVID-19 pandemic put a spotlight on existing healthcare disparities, but, in communities throughout the U.S., public health leaders have been trying to tackle systemic inequitiesfor years with limited success.
We have operated in siloes for far too long. What COVID taught us is we have to work collaboratively, together, all of us playing nicely in the sandbox with one mission:making sure lives are protected, said Denise Fair, chief public health officer at the Detroit Health Department.
"Enough is enough. We are tired of having the same conversation about barriers, Fair said during a "view from the top" panel discussion Tuesdayat the 2021 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Global Conference.
COVID-19 "exposed the wounds of racial and economic injustice," said Michael Petersen, M.D.,chief clinical innovation officer at NTT DATA Services and the moderator of the panel."While there were some isolated innovation gains, what remains are persistent, systemic access to healthcare challenges, which continue to negatively impact our underserved communities."
There have been some "bright spots" in addressing health inequities but, by and large, efforts have not had staying power, said Ronald Copeland, M.D., senior vice president and chief equity, inclusion and diversity officerat the Kaiser Permanente health system.
"Weve been working in a fragmented system with amisalignment of incentives for policymakers, health systems, health insurance companies, practitioners andsafety net organizations. We are scattered on this playing field and are not all rowing in the same direction," he said.
"And we need more rowers," Petersen quipped.

Copeland agreed that collaboration between providers, payers, communities and technology companies will be critical to get at the root problems that lead to health inequities.
"Technology has not been part of the conversation and has to be part of the conversation," Fair said. "And technology hasto be designed with the end-user in mind and created equitably for everyone. Weneed to haveconversations with technology atthe center."
Technology companies can help health systems and communities take data-driven approaches to reduce inequities and can also help to make evidence-based healthcare information accessible to a wide population.
Ivor Horn, M.D., director of health equity and product inclusion at Google, pointed to the tech giant'sHealth Equity Trackerand itswork on YouTube Health, which provides evidence-based medical data to users seeking information.
Research shows roughly 7 in 10 people turn to the internet first when theyre looking for health information. Google has the opportunity tobuild products that guide usersto the right resources and find the information they need, Horn said.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Google also created virtual agents so anyone can book appointments and get critical vaccine information in whatever way theyre most comfortable with,whether thats over the phone, through text, or on the web.
But partnering with community-based organizations is key to going that last mile, Horn said.
"Those working onhealth equity have too often found themselves siloed, with limited ability to scale their projects. It's asmall project here and a small project there," she said. "We're now making the shift to look at how do we scale and we can think about what role technology can play."
"None of us can solve itall alone," she added.
But technology has its limitations. In Detroit, 40% of the city's 700,000 residents don't have access to high-speed internet, and 25% don't have access to the internet at all, Fair said.
For the city's vaccination strategy, the public health department teamed up with community partners, such as a large mortgage firm, to create a massivecall center where any resident could access educational resources, COVID-19 testing and vaccination appointments. The city also partnered with churches to set up vaccination sites.
"In the middle of a crisis, we couldnt just wait around for the bells and whistles of this new technology project," Fair said.
Tackling health inequities requires a culture shift at organizations, health leaders said.
The focus on health disparities as a result of the COVID-19 impact opens up opportunities for the healthcare industry and its partners to"take agiant step," Copeland said.
"It will require transformation and require us to go on a learning journey and collaborating together," he said. "Technology is a powerful tool, but if you put it on top of the chaos we have right now, well be disappointed."

Health systems and payers are ramping up efforts to address social determinants of health, or the social factors that impact a person's health status. Efforts to help patients and health plan members with issues like food insecurity, transportation or housing can play a role in reducing health inequities.
Healthcare organizations are increasingly turning to technology companies to take a more data-driven approach to social determinants initiatives.
Legacy health IT player Cerner recently expandeditsplatformto help customers identify SDOH factors. Cerner teamed up with artificial intelligence company Jvion to integrate thecompany's social determinants of health insights into its products.
The Cerner Determinants of Health dashboard and supporting set of tools,integrated into the Cerner EHR, aim to help clinicians pinpoint disparities and suggest goals and resources within the patients care plan to help target intervention opportunities. Cerner said the technology providesclients with a more concise way to identify and address social and behavioral health factors patient risk while offering context and clinical guidance to adopt for improved health outcomes.

A new crop of startups also have entered the market including Unite Us,NowPow, Healthify andAunt Berthaas well asanalytics companies Arcadia, Signify Health and Health Catalyst.
Many of these software platforms work as a referral service to help connect people to social services.
But Ryan Bosch, M.D., president and founder of Socially Determined, said efforts to address social determinants of health issues need to move beyond justreferring someone to social services on a one-time basis.
Socially Determineddeveloped a cloud-based platform that offers social risk analytics and data visualization solutions for the healthcare industry. The company's SocialScape platform pulls in TransUnions Aggregated Credit Data, consumer data, SDOH data andgeospatial data to provide a holistic view of the risks facking individuals, according to the company.
"Social determinants of healthis a five to 10-year investment. Its not 'lets refer a vulnerable population to a food clinic, and were done.' The 'screen and connect' strategy is necessary but it's so much broader than that,"Bosch told Fierce Healthcare during the HIMSS21 conference.
"I hope we can elevatethe conversation to so much more than just 'screen and connect'. When we talk about solutions at scale that means lifting up the whole population by providinginterventions like stable housing or green grocery stores and health literacy around vaccines," he said.

Following the IPCCs report, we need more technology to respond to more disasters – TechCrunch

This week, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its major sixth assessment report on the physical science of climate change. The details are grim, if getting more precise, as better and more comprehensive data becomes available. As my colleague Mike Butcher summarized yesterday, its stern and blunt in its conclusions.
While many of the themes of the report will be familiar to any person not living under (an ever increasingly hot) rock, one part jumped out at me as I was perusing the documents. The working group assessed that regardless of mitigation and adaptation strategies, many of the negative changes happening to Earth will continue unabated in all future scenarios. From the summary report:
Many changes due to past and future greenhouse gas emissions are irreversible for centuries to millennia, especially changes in the ocean, ice sheets and global sea level. [] Mountain and polar glaciers are committed to continue melting for decades or centuries (very high confidence). Loss of permafrost carbon following permafrost thaw is irreversible at centennial timescales (high confidence)
In short, there is already momentum toward a warmer and more chaotic world, and we have limited tools to stop many of these trends.
There has been a rush of initiatives, investments and startups bubbling around the theme of climate tech, with projects focused on everything from improving the yields and decreasing the emissions of agriculture and food production, to improving the power grid, and to reducing the emissions from air conditioning in buildings. Those initiatives are fine and important, but they dont get at one of the toughest challenges facing us this century: that disasters are here, they are coming and they are going to continue to get more intense as the century rolls on.
Just this past week, we have seen the second-largest fire in Californias state history with the Dixie Fire, currently blazing across hundreds of thousands of acres in the northern reaches of the state. Meanwhile in Greece, hundreds of wildfires are causing an unprecedented crisis in that country. Droughts, floods, hurricanes, typhoons and more are intensifying and ravaging ever more billions of people across every continent.
One response to solving this problem is improving resilience building up cities and structures as well as food and water systems that are fortified against these natural calamities. Many of those projects though are costly and also time-consuming, measured over the course of decades rather than months.
Instead, we need a more immediate push to develop better disaster response technology today. Ive covered a wide segment of these companies over the past few months. Theres RapidSOS, which is adding more data into emergency calls to make responses faster and more efficient. Theres Qwake, which raised $5.5 million to build hardware and cloud services to allow firefighters to visualize their environments in smoky conditions. Meanwhile, YC-backed Gridware has also raised more than $5 million to create sensors to identify failures in the power grid faster.
In short, there are a growing crop of disaster tech startups but more are going to be needed to fight the panoply of disasters that will strike in the years ahead.
Theres so much to do: better mental health resources for victims and first responders, easier access to recovery funds to heal lives, higher-quality sensors and data analyses to identify disasters earlier, faster logistics to evacuate people out of harms way. In fact, there are quite literally dozens of fields that need more investment and founder attention.
Its not an easy market, as I pointed out in an analysis of sales cycles. Budgets are tight, disasters are random, and technology is often an afterthought. In some ways though, that friction is a font of creativity how to build these next-generation of services and how to sell them is the risk that leads to the potential high return.
As the IPCCs report made clear this week, the chaotic weather and intense disasters weve seen the past few decades arent going to abate any time soon. But with ingenuity, we can respond better to the disasters that are already on their way, and save lives and treasure in the process.
