Is This New Technology the Biggest Threat to Crypto? – Motley Fool

Posted: September 29, 2021 at 7:30 am

There's a technological race going on: blockchain vs. quantum computing. Theoretically, major leaps in quantum computing could undermine the whole cryptocurrency industry -- just as that nascent blockchain technology is entering the mainstream. But crypto experts are already working on new coding that's quantum-proof.

Blockchain is the technology behind Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies. It works by breaking data into blocks secured by clever cryptography. That cryptography is what makes it possible to cut the middlemen -- banks and governments -- out of financial transactions. It's also what quantum computing might unravel.

If you thought it was difficult to get your head around blockchain technology, quantum computing is a whole other story. It would be easy to say it could revolutionize everything because, well, it's quantum. But that's not totally true.

Quantum computing will be able to address certain issues really well -- as in millions of times faster than current computers. And the challenge for crypto is that quantum computers will eventually be really good at cracking cryptographic keys.

It isn't there yet. But it's estimated that in the next 10 years, quantum computers will be able to process data fast enough to solve the algorithms that keep cryptocurrency safe. Here are two of the big concerns:

It should be said that it's not only cryptocurrency that could be affected by developments in quantum computing. It could impact all kinds of data protected by digital signatures -- from government encryption to banks and your personal emails.

The good news is that this is a known problem. And it won't happen overnight -- quantum computers won't suddenly make the leap to cracking crypto. According to computing experts, we'll know well before it actually happens.

More importantly, as quantum computing is evolving, so is blockchain technology. Some developers are already looking at forms of post-quantum cryptography. This is enhanced encryption that can't be cracked by quantum computers, and specialists are pretty confident they'll succeed.

That said, one of the big selling points for blockchain is the almost impenetrable security it offers. The possibility of breaking that security is at best unsettling, and crypto investors should pay attention to quantum developments.

Individual cryptocurrencies may need to upgrade to post-quantum cryptographic solutions. It will be worth watching which digital currency projects stay ahead of that curve.

We'll also almost certainly reach a time when cryptocurrency investors will need to transfer their funds to more-secure wallets. And since data firm Chainalysis estimates that 20% of Bitcoin is currently lost or stuck in wallets people can't access, there's a chance these coins (which can't be moved) will be more vulnerable to attack.

If you keep your assets with a cryptocurrency exchange, it will likely help to manage the transition. But if you keep your crypto assets in a decentralized wallet, you may need to be more proactive.

We often talk about regulation as the biggest threat to crypto, but other technologies are a danger, too. Just as Bitcoin didn't exist 12 years ago, so other technologies could evolve that make blockchain obsolete. Or -- like quantum computing -- take the cryptography out of cryptocurrency.

Existing cryptocurrency projects already have plenty of problems to address, from scalability to sustainability. But, given the scale of the threat, the industry also needs to work now to ensure quantum computing won't undermine the very security that is its foundation.

AnitaB.org NAMES ADP, The New York Times Company, and Dev Technology Group as 2021 Top Companies for Women Technologists – PRNewswire

Posted: at 7:30 am

BELMONT, Calif., Sept. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- AnitaB.org, the global non-profit focused on intersectional gender and pay parity in tech, today recognized ADP, The New York Times Company, and Dev Technology Group as the winners of the 2021 Top Companies for Women Technologists, the only benchmarking program of its kind that specifically evaluates the technical workforce and awards companies that are making the most progress toward intersectional gender equity.

Participants of Top Companies for Women Technologists were evaluated based on data collected between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, based on the representation of women in technical roles in the U.S. and the rates of recruitment, retention, and advancement of such women. Companies were also evaluated and scored against their transparency and accountability, equitable hiring, caregiving support, pay equity, leadership and advancement, inclusion, and flexible work policies and offerings. This year's Top Companies for Women Technologists measured data from 56 tech companies and more than 552,000 technologists, making it the most rigorous report dissecting organizations' commitment to supporting a diverse technical workforce.

In addition to unveiling its winners, the data from this year's Top Companies for Women Technologists shows the total representation of technical women decreased by2.1 percentage from 2020 to 2021. Small workforces incurred the greatest losses, with an averagedecrease of 5.1 percentage points.

The report also found that women's representation within new hires increased in January 2021 (31% of tech new hires were women), continuing a favorable trend of the last five years. However, many companies instituted hiring freezes for portions of 2020, causing an overall decrease in tech new hires. Because hiring is the primary driver of increasing diversity, decreased overall hiring resulted in a decrease in the amount of tech women hired (18% fewer tech women were brought into organizations).

While there were fewer women represented in tech and fewer new hires, Top Companies for Women Technologistsfound that organizations made more strides to offer policies and programs that support women from formal career sponsorship programsto caregiver leave.

"While COVID-19 changed the way we live and work in nearly every way and in every part of the world, it will also be remembered for some remarkable strides made to advance gender equality and inclusion,"said Brenda Darden Wilkerson, President and CEO of AnitaB.org. "I am thrilled to honor this year's winners of Top Companies for Women Technologists for their ongoing work to advance intersectional gender equity. The data and insights provided by the winners and all the participating companies allow us to ignite much-needed conversations around diversity, and ultimately, serves as the fuel that allows us to cultivate a community invested in creating a world of inclusive technology."

Launched in 2011, Top Companies for Women Technologists helps organizations discover areas where they can improve and signals a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion that women look for in an employer. At a time when women, particularly women of color, are significantly underrepresented on teams that are building technologies that shape every aspect of modern life, Top Companies for Women Technologists helps point the way to a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive future.

This year's report is the first time to encompass an interactive component, with a dashboard that allows anyone to drill down to more specifics based on technical workforce size. The Greatest Influences of Technology on Gaming – Tech Guide

Posted: at 7:30 am

Can you imagine life without technology? Neither can we. Computers, smartphones, and the internet make the world go around, and the gaming industry is not an exception to its influence. Therefore, we present the greatest influences of technology on gaming.

Before 3D graphics came to the scene, game creators used 2D and text-based technology. However, the appearance of 3D, followed by the development of special effects, made video games much more realistic, putting a gaming experience on a higher level. Now, you can lose yourself in a perfectly designed world of Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, or Lost Judgement, and enjoy sceneries that look just as real.

Artificial intelligence has entered the gaming scene through the big door. It is one of those technological innovations that both game creators and players have welcomed with open arms. Video game studios today use AI, to create characters players can interact with or fight against, and they are fairly complex. These non-playable characters give players everything they need from contemporary games the touch of realism.

The development of virtual and augmented reality is one of the most significant technological innovations of our day. Unlike virtual reality, where we become part of a simulation that includes 3D photorealistic graphics, in augmented reality, we can use computer-generated images and impose them on the real world.

The gaming industry saw these two realities as an amazing opportunity for further development of video games. For instance, today, players can use VR headsets and enter the most fantastic gaming settings, experiencing what they could not or would not want to in the physical world.

The video game companies know that the future is now and that making the most out of technological innovations is essential to stay competitive in the market. Thats why some of the bravest and creative ones have already developed games that include hyperreality. Also known as location-based entertainment, hyperreality is the mixture of physical and virtual reality. Hyperreal games provide lifelike experiences, allowing players to gather in a physical space and join a specific virtual activity, such as a video game, using the required equipment.

It is interesting to know the difference between hyperreality and virtual reality. In virtual reality, for instance, everything is placed inside the goggles. However, in hyperreality, players use headsets and see the space they are playing the game in. Thats the beauty of hyperreality: you can walk around the room, reach some virtual object, and even feel them in their physical form. In fact, many will argue that hyperreality is the blend of virtual and augmented reality.

Many will not agree with this statement, but if we look at the broader picture, the invention of the computer and internet has led to the appearance of social media platforms, making it easier for people to connect. Now, you can play your favorite video games with other gaming enthusiasts all around the globe, and this doesnt only stand for games such as WoW, LoL or Dota, but for many other titles and genres as well.

For instance, the online space has become a piece of heaven for passionate casino players, too. Today, players can enjoy their favorite casino games from the comfort of their homes not only thanks to the Internet, but also thanks to renowned providers and platforms such as skycitycasino.com, which are making the best of it.

The reason why these online games have gained popularity is thanks to the possibilities they offer one of the most appealing is flexibility. It means you can play an online game anytime, anywhere. All you need is a stable internet connection.

Playing online games doesnt require sitting in front of your desktop computer or laptop constantly. In contrast, when we said you could play online games anytime, anywhere, we meant you could also play them on your smartphone.

In fact, online games have probably become even more popular now that we can play them on our mobile devices. Moreover, the number of gaming apps available on the market is beyond imaginable. And the best thing is, you dont have to be passionate about gaming or a pro to play mobile games because theres something for everyone.

The gaming industry is profitable per se, but in order to spin more revenue, merchandising has become an inevitable part of each game companys business strategy. So today, we have our favorite game characters on mugs, t-shirts, and even made as action figures.

Moreover, some leading game companies have created different publications inspired by video games, including comics and books. And thats not all; a few video games, such as Ubisofts Assassins Creed, were adapted for the big screen, and it is almost certain that we will see more video games made into TV series and movies.

Technology is both Beauty and the Beast. So, what it can turn into is yet to be seen. But, whatever happens, the gaming industry will surely follow it.

The pandemic is testing the limits of face recognition – MIT Technology Review

Posted: at 7:30 am

More and more, its being used in whats presented as the interest of public health. Australia recently expanded a program using facial recognition to enforce covid-19 safety precautions. People who are quarantining are subject to random check-ins, in which theyre required to send a selfie to confirm they are following rules. Location data is also collected, according to Reuters.

When it comes to essentials like emergency benefits to pay for housing and food, the first priority should be making sure everyone is able to access help, Greer says. Preventing fraud is a reasonable objective on the surface, she adds, but the most pressing goal must be to get people the benefits they need.

Systems have to be built with human rights and with vulnerable peoples needs in mind from the start. Those cant be afterthoughts, Greer says. They cant be bug fixes after it already goes wrong.

ID.mes Hall says his companys services are preferable to the existing methods of verifying identity and have helped states cut down on massive unemployment fraud since implementing face verification checks. He says unemployment claims have around a 91% true pass rateeither on their own or through a video call with an ID.me representative.

[That] was our goal going in, he says. If we could automate away 91% of this, then the states that are just outgunned in terms of resources can use those resources to provide white-glove concierge service to the 9%.

When users are not able to get through the face recognition process, ID.me emails them to follow up, according to Hall.

Everything about this company is about helping people get access to things theyre eligible for, he says.

The months that JB survived without income were difficult. The financial worry was enough to cause stress, and other troubles like a broken computer compounded the anxiety. Even their former employer couldnt or wouldnt help cut through the red tape.

Its very isolating to be like, No one is helping me in any situation, JB says.

On the government side, experts say it makes sense that the pandemic brought new technology to the forefront, but cases like JBs show that technology in itself is not the whole answer. Anne L. Washington, an assistant professor of data policy at New York University, says its tempting to consider a new government technology a success when it works most of the time during the research phase but fails 5% of the time in the real world. She compares the result to a game of musical chairs, where in a room of 100 people, five will always be left without a seat.

The problem is that governments get some kind of technology and it works 95% of the timethey think its solved, she says. Instead, human intervention becomes more important than ever. Says Washington: They need a system to regularly handle the five people who are standing.

Theres an additional layer of risk when a private company is involved. The biggest issue that arises in the rollout of a new kind of technology is where the data is kept, Washington says. Without a trusted entity that has the legal duty to protect peoples information, sensitive data could end up in the hands of others. How would we feel, for example, if the federal government had entrusted a private company with our Social Security numbers when they were created?

The problem is that governments get some kind of technology and it works 95% of the timethey think its solved

Widespread and unchecked use of face recognition tools also has the potential to affect already marginalized groups more than others. Transgender people, for example, have detailed, frequent problems with tools like Google Photos, which may question whether pre- and post-transition photos show the same person. It means reckoning with the software over and over.

[Theres] inaccuracy in technologys ability to reflect the breadth of actual diversity and edge cases there are in the real world, says Daly Barnett, a technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. We cant rely on them to accurately classify and compute and reflect those beautiful edge cases.

Conversations about face recognition typically debate how the technology could fail or discriminate. But Barnett encourages people to think beyond whether the biometric tools work or not, or whether bias show up in the technology. She pushes back on the idea that we need them at all. Indeed, activists like Greer warn, the tools could be even more dangerous when they work perfectly. Face recognition has already been used to identify, punish, or stifle protesters, though people are fighting back. In Hong Kong, protesters wore masks and goggles to hide their faces from such police surveillance. In the US, federal prosecutors dropped charges against a protester identified using face recognition who had been accused of assaulting police officers.

An Industry First in Rate Transparency: New C.H. Robinson Technology Identifies How Shippers Can Save on the Spot Market and Lets Them Compare Their…

Posted: September 20, 2021 at 8:33 am

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With tight trucking capacity and market volatility pushing more freight into the spot market, global logistics provider C.H. Robinson has launched Market Rate IQ a new tool that shows companies how their spot rates compare to a trusted third-party benchmark and breaks down where they could save money.

Created by C.H. Robinsons technology incubator, C.H. Robinson Labs, Market Rate IQ is the only tool in the industry that shows shippers which factors in their U.S. spot pricing are market-driven and which they can control. Its also the only tool in the industry that incorporates DATs RateView, the most comprehensive and reliable database of U.S. spot freight rates.

Virtually every company is looking for a solution to help them navigate the spot market, so we built one, said Tim Gagnon, head of Robinson Labs and C.H. Robinsons vice president of analytics and data science. Now, for the first time, they can see whats driving their rates and what they can do about it. Then we take that transparency a step further and show them how their rates compare to the average for each of their shipping lanes and locations. Its like going to the grocery store and instantly being able to see how the price of everything on your list compares to the market. Who doesnt want to know if theyre paying more than market?

Companies have had to turn to the spot market more as global disruptions ripple through their supply chains, requiring more last-minute changes and short-term decisions. Since January 2020, load postings are up 176% while postings from trucks looking for loads are down 5%. That imbalance drives rates up and companies often cope with that by spreading their spot freight among many transportation providers even though that added effort doesnt always result in better rates.

During its incubation phase, Market Rate IQ uncovered $75 million in potential customer savings across $1.2 billion in spot freight spend. These were the top five reasons customers paid more than they might have needed to, even when their rates were below market average:

Market Rate IQ is offered within C.H. Robinsons Navisphere platform and powered by C.H. Robinsons unmatched freight dataset the largest in the industry. Some of the largest retailers in the world, as well as other global B2C and B2B companies, have now begun taking advantage of this technology built by and for supply chain experts.

Market Rate IQ gives us this window into our spot rates that just wasnt possible before, said Terry Laluk, Senior Director of Logistics of Valmont, a global provider of infrastructure for transit, utilities, agriculture and other industries. We have confidence and assurance that were getting good rates, especially under market conditions no one has ever experienced. But its also so easy to see where adjusting our shipping strategy could add to our bottom line. We just started using the tool, and the potential for significant cost savings is already clear.

C.H. Robinson teamed up with DAT on Market Rate IQ because DATs spot rate benchmark, based on $110 billion in shipment data across 68,000 shipping lanes, is widely considered the industry standard.

Shippers dont have to be at the mercy of these uncertain times, said Mike Weaver, Vice President of Sales at DAT. The right technology and data can make a powerful difference. Market Rate IQ represents two industry leaders coming together to help all parties negotiate with confidence, transparency and the most trusted rate benchmarks in the industry.

FDA Clears First Technology to Distinguish between Bacterial and Viral Infections Using the Bodys Immune Response The MeMed BV Test and MeMed Key Platform

MeMed BV is a first-of-its kind test that decodes the immune response to accurately distinguish between bacterial or viral infections within minutes

MeMed Key is a pioneering platform that enables rapid and sensitive measurements of multiple proteins at the point-of-need

The MeMed technology suite enables better informed antibiotic treatment decisions, an essential tool in the fight against the global threat of resistant bacteria

HAIFA, Israel, Boston, MA; September 20th, 2021 MeMed, a leader in the emerging field of advanced host-response technologies, today announces that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) clearance for use of the MeMed BV test on the point-of-need platform MeMed Key to help healthcare providers distinguish between bacterial and viral infections. The technology has been cleared for both children and adults.

Bacterial and viral infections are often clinically indistinguishable, leading to the prescription of antibiotics for the treatment of viral infections, for which they are ineffective. Antibiotic misuse drives the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), one of the biggest healthcare challenges of our time. The novelty of MeMeds technology is that it decodes the bodys immune response to infection, the host response, rather than focusing on detecting the presence of a microbe. This allows robust diagnosis when the infection site is inaccessible or unknown, even when the pathogen is undetectable using conventional tests, or when the cause of infection are emerging new pathogens. It enables better informed antibiotic treatment decisions, an essential tool in the fight against resistant bacteria.

For those of us who care for acutely ill children, we have been waiting decades for accurate, rapid diagnostics to confidently guide the care of moderately ill children without a clear focus of infection or recognizable viral illness. This novel test offers promise to help differentiate those children with self-limited viral illness from those with possible bacterial infection, thereby supporting the judicious use of antibiotics, said Rich Bachur, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and Chief, Division of Emergency Medicine, Boston Children's Hospital.

Story continues

It has been a decade long journey to reach this point from concept to impacting patient lives, said Dr. Eran Eden, MeMeds co-founder and CEO. This FDA clearance is a breakthrough moment in the field of advanced host-response and could not have been achieved without the dedication of the MeMed team, our clinical partners in the US and around the globe, and the support of the US Department of Defense and EU Commission.

Sergey Motov, MD, Professor of Emergency Medicine, Maimonides Medical Center, New York, said: Host-response technologies are a new frontier in the management of patients with infectious diseases, with great potential to improve patient outcomes. Every day, I see adults with a complicated medical history presenting to the emergency room with a suspected respiratory tract infection. A technology like MeMed BV can significantly aid in their management.

We are now using MeMed BV in my department routinely to aid in determining whether a child with fever has a bacterial or viral infection. For example, we recently had a complicated case of a young child with fever but without a clear source. MeMed BV helped in early identification of a severe bacterial infection, that would otherwise be masked by viral PCR detection, lead to a change in the course of treatment, and made a big difference in the patients outcome, said Dr Adi Klein, Director of the Pediatric Division, Hillel Yaffe Medical Center and Head of the Israeli Clinical Pediatric Society. Introducing MeMeds technology has had a significant impact on our medical practice, enabling us to be better stewards of antibiotics and improving patient outcomes.

FDA clearance was based on a multi-center blinded clinical validation study enrolling over 1,000 children and adults and addresses goals laid out in the US National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria. The test provides highly accurate results with Area Under the Curve of 90% and 97% (primary and secondary endpoints). MeMed has established its US base in Boston and is ramping up commercial activities to ensure broad availability of its products across the US.

About MeMed Our mission is to translate the immune system's complex signals into simple insights that transform the way diseases are diagnosed and treated, profoundly benefiting patients and society. To learn more about MeMed and our solutions, please visit http://www.me-med.com

About MeMed BVMeMed BV is a first-of-its-kind immune-based protein signature test, developed and validated over the course of decade-long collaborations with leading academic and commercial partners. It provides physicians with an indispensable tool to help distinguish between bacterial and viral infections across multiple pathogens, even if the infection site is inaccessible or unknown. Bluegrass Vascular Announces Decision by Medicare to Assign a New Technology Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) for the Surfacer System Procedure…

Posted: at 8:33 am

The Surfacer System employs a novel Inside-Out approach and is the first FDA cleared medical device to facilitate upper body central venous access in patients with venous obstructions or other conditions that preclude access by conventional methods.

"The CMS decision to assign a New Technology APC for the Surfacer System is a major milestone and will ensure that our innovative technology will be reimbursed for Medicare beneficiaries. This is a significant development, given the prevalence of thoracic central venous obstruction in patients dialyzing via a central venous catheter," stated Gabriele Niederauer, Ph.D., CEO and President of Bluegrass Vascular. "This decision is a testament to the positive clinical evidence and cost data that support the use of the Surfacer System as a critical, lifesaving technology."

Thoracic central venous obstruction occurs in roughly 40% of patients where hemodialysis is performed via a central venous catheter.1 While permanent arteriovenous fistulas are the preferred form of vascular access for hemodialysis patients, central venous catheters continue to serve as an important bridge to securing long-term access for life-saving hemodialysis treatment. The current approach for most patients with central venous obstructions is to use an alternative vein, which reduces the ability to place and mature a functioning fistula, resulting in increased catheter days and costs.

According to CMS, more than 62.4 million Americans are enrolled in the Medicare program.2 Approximately 80% of patients on hemodialysis are covered by Medicare fee-for-service as primary payer or by a Medicare Advantage managed care plan.3 Patients who live with kidney failure represent 1% of the total U.S. Medicare population yet account for 7% of the Medicare costs.4

The use of the Surfacer device also avoids left-side catheter placement, better enabling the maturation of permanent arteriovenous access options in the left arm and minimizing unnecessary access-related procedures and complications. The National Kidney Foundation's current Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) Clinical Practice Guidelinesfor Vascular Access recommend that the ideal access site for hemodialysis catheters is the right internal jugular vein. This preferred right-sided access path is supported by the Surfacer System's novel Don't Go Left approach.

The Surfacer System received FDA De Novo clearancein the US in February and is CE marked in Europe. The device is available in North America, Europe and other territories.

About the Surfacer Inside-Out Access Catheter System

TheSurfacerSystem is designed to reliably, efficiently and repeatedly gain central venous access by inserting theSurfacerSystem through the right femoral vein and navigating it up through the patient's venous system with an exit point in the right internal jugular vein, the optimal location for placing a central venous catheter. This proprietary Inside-Out approach allows for the placement and maturation of permanent arteriovenous access options that are associated with improved patient outcomes and reduced cost of care for both hospitals and hemodialysis providers.
