NFL betting: The wagers that helped sportsbooks clean up in Week 1 – New York Post
Posted: September 16, 2021 at 6:27 am
The opening weekend of the 2021 NFL season brought several new legalized states into the world of sports betting (increasing the overall total to 26) and whats sure to be an increase in money wagered. It also reminded bettors new and old that the oddsmakers are pretty good at this.
Entering Monday night, underdogs were 11-4 against the spread and Unders were 9-6, usually a bad combination for the betting public. Perhaps the sportsbooks week can be best summarized by Ed Salmons, VP of risk at SuperBook Sports: It was a great week.
Lets run through some of the notable decisions and bigger bets in Week 1.
The San Francisco 49ers were heavy public favorites with nearly every book I spoke with having at least 70 percent of bets and 75 percent of the money wagered on San Francisco to cover the spread. WynnBet had a staggering 96 percent of the money wagered on the 49ers to cover the spread and Caesars Sports wasnt far behind at 83 percent. The 49ers closed as consensus 9.5-point road favorites against the Detroit Lions, the highest line on Sunday, though it was at 7.5 much of the week.
San Francisco was comfortably ahead 41-17, before Detroit scored two touchdowns (aided by an onside kick recovery) and converted two two-point conversions to make the final 41-33. The Lions even had a final chance to score a touchdown before turning the ball over on downs.
Any sportsbook you contacted on Sunday was loaded with money on the Green Bay Packers (-3.5) to beat the New Orleans Saints, but the line actually dipped from -4 to -3.5, indicating some respected money was on New Orleans to cover. The Saints did plenty more than cover, dominating Green Bay and crushing many moneyline parlays and Packers bets. A remarkable 87 percent of bets and 92 percent of the money at DraftKings were on the Packers to cover, and the story was similar at other books.
The Pack game was the most lopsided game in terms of splits (86 percent of handle on Green Bay spread, 90 percent on moneyline,) said BetRivers sportsbook manager Zach Schlouch. And the Green Bay spread generated the most handle of any individual bet on the entire board.
Seattle at Indianapolis had a range of Colts -2.5 to its closing line of Seahawks -2.5 after being as high as Seahawks -3. Seattle covering the spread was the highest liability of the early games at TwinSpires Sportsbook and a massive decision for most sportsbooks. Over 80 percent of the bets and 86 percent of the handle were on Seattle to cover at DraftKings, though PointsBet was one of the few books that needed the Seahawks due to a $15,000 wager on the Colts +3. The Seahawks won 28-16 in a game that wasnt as close as the score, leading to one of the few wins of the day for public bettors.
The two best games for the players were the Seahawks and the Broncos [over the Giants], Stations sportsbook director Chuck Esposito said. But overall it was a really good opening week for the books.
$110,000 on second-half Over 28 in Browns-Chiefs at BetMGM; $100,000 on Panthers moneyline (-200) vs. Jets at FanDuel.
$110,000 on Colts +2.5 at BetMGM; $110,000 on Packers -3.5 at BetMGM; $120,000 on New York Giants ML at Caesars Sports; $100,000 on Packers ML -141 at FanDuel.

Connecticut Sports Betting at Retail Sportsbooks Nears as Online Rollout Continues – The Action Network
Posted: at 6:27 am
Connecticuts first legal retail sportsbooks cleared the final major regulatory hurdle Wednesday, allowing in-person betting to begin in the coming days. On Wednesday state officials also reaffirmed the states online sports betting launch is still several weeks away.
The DraftKings sportsbook at Foxwoods Resort Casino and the FanDuel sportsbook at Mohegan Sun were formally approved by federal regulators Wednesday when a renewed gaming compact between the state and the two partnering tribes was published in the Federal Registrar.
Though state officials, as well as the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes, were notified of their approval last week, the gaming compacts, by law, were not officially approved until Wednesdays publication.
The two massive casino resorts have spent months preparing in-person sportsbooks. Though there are several final steps before wagering can begin, casino officials told the Action Network last month that the sportsbooks would be ready soon after formal federal approval.
As of publication Wednesday, it was unclear if either sportsbook would open ahead of this weeks NFL Week 2 games.
The two tribal-operated retail sportsbooks are regulated separately from their respective online sportsbooks. Connecticut regulators told the Action Network last week the online process will take several more weeks.
Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Michelle Seagull, whose department will oversee the states online sportsbooks, told a Connecticut radio station Wednesday that regulators still needed to conduct background checks and license each operator, among other standard regulatory measures.
Were going to take look at some of the internal controls of the businesses, understand how they plan to operate and what internally theyre going to be doing to make sure were comfortable with how theyll operate, Seagull told Bloomfield, Connecticut-based WDRC.
Each sportsbook must also pass independent laboratory inspection and testing, a common regulatory move that nevertheless prolongs the rollout process. Seagull also said there would be a multi-day soft launch to allow operators to test out their mobile sportsbooks before a full-scale launch in October.
Though Gov. Ned Lamont signed a sweeping online gaming bill that allows online sports betting, casino gaming and lottery sales into law in May, existing state law requires follow-up regulations before any new gaming form can begin. State regulators had to write these regulations and have them approved by lawmakers, a process that concluded late last month.
The online gaming aspects are independent from the two tribes retail sportsbook agreements, which are governed by federal law. The federal government didnt formally sign off on the new compact between Lamont and the two tribes until Wednesday, delaying the retail betting launch as well.
A lot of the steps that need to happen have occurred, Seagull said. Were sort of in the home stretch here.
Along with DraftKings and FanDuel, Rush Steet Interactive will also offer statewide mobile sports betting. Rush Street earned the states third and final license through a partnership with the state lottery. The company will likely brand its sportsbook under its SugarHouse name.
DraftKings and FanDuel, in conjunction with their respective tribal partners, can offer statewide mobile iGaming such as table games and slots, unlike the lottery-partnered Rush Street operation. However, Rush Street can open up to 15 retail sportsbooks across the state, several of which will be at Connecticut off-track betting facilities.
The lottery is also considering a sportsbook at Hartfords XL Center, though no deal has been finalized. If approved, it would be one of the nations first in-stadium retail sportsbooks and the first at a sporting venue that doesnt host a full-time NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL team.
Though Connecticut permits only three statewide mobile sportsbooks, it will still have more than the rest of New England combined. Rhode Island (Caesars) and New Hampshire (DraftKings) are de facto monopolies and Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont have not yet legalized online or retail sports betting.

Our esteemed governor is betting big that hell be able to get this done on sports gambling in Oklahoma, but hes going to have some mountainous hurdles along the way.
Namely, Gov. Kevin Stitt will have to address his, quite frankly, bizarre feud with the major tribes in our state. Considering the tribes popularity with both Republicans and Democrats in the Oklahoma Legislature, all roads to sportsbook go through them. So if this is going to happen, some sensible conversations between all parties need to be the next step.
Do I see that happening any time soon? No, but the dollars at stake with legalized sports gambling could have a way of cooling heads eventually. Perhaps Stitt just needs to toss a pigskin around for a while and loosen up; I hear back in 82 he could throw it a quarter-mile.

NASCAR Best Bets: Motorsports Picks, Odds to Consider on DraftKings Sportsbook for the Bass Pro Shops Night R – DraftKings Nation
Posted: at 6:27 am
Last week was another big week for the NASCAR Best Bets. Martin Truex, Jr. won at Richmond (+550), and both head-to-head plays easily cruised to the ticket counter. Aric Almirola beat Kurt Busch by 23 positions (-125) and Christopher Bell finished third beating William Byron by 16 positions (-115). This is a new week, but the process does not change. I dug into the the lap-by-lap data and analyzed recent Bristol and Dover full races on YouTube to predict this weeks winner.
Place your NASCAR bets on DraftKings Sportsbook and bet online by downloading the DraftKings Sportsbook app.
The sports star has never won at Bristol, but that will change this weekend. Larson has been very close to winning at Bristol in the past, but he could not close. Times have changed, Larson is a more experienced driver and hes in much better equipment. Last fall at Bristol, Kyle Busch drove from the back of the field to the lead with ease by working the top groove that other drivers were hesitant to run. Larson is the master of the top line at Bristol and should be able to take the lead easily. In other high horsepower races with moderate-to-high banking this season, Larson has absolutely put a hurting on the field, leading 88% of the laps at Nashville and 66% of the laps at Dover. Both of these tracks are unique in that they are concrete paved, and Bristol is the only other fully concrete track on the circuit.
Last season, when Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch were battling on the final lap, the No. 20 car was one second back. Erik Jones was driving that car, but Christopher Bell is a better driver, a better driver in this package and a better driver at Bristol. Bells crew chief, Adam Stevens, was Kyle Buschs crew chief in that near win in the fall Bristol race, but they did lead the most laps in that race and they did win the 2020 spring Bristol race. Worth noting, is that the No. 18 JGR car and the No. 20 JGR car both failed inspection last fall, but starting in the back did not prevent these cars from getting to the front. JGR, and in particular Adam Stevens, has hit on something with the no-practice setup at Bristol.

This is a long shot, but this is the rare occasion where a long shot has a legitimate shot at winning. Back in 2016, DiBenedetto showed that Bristol was his best track by finishing sixth in a notoriously underfunded BK Racing car. With better equipment not great equipment he finished second in the No. 95 car for Leavine Family Racing in 2019. He should have won that race but he ran into infamous lapper, Ryan Newman, and Denny Hamlin was able to take the lead late in the race. Last season, DiBenedetto took two tires during the competition caution, but the gamble did not pay off. Despite the gamble not working, that is the type of strategy bettors want to see from longshots. DiBenedetto went two laps down for a loose wheel, but battled back to seventh place late in stage 3 before debris cut down DiBenedettos tire on lap 481 of 500.
Bristol is not Dover, but without practice, bettors have to pick which data points to weigh heavily. The last Bristol race was a year ago, and in that race, Bowman was running inside the top 10 early in stage 3 before he had to pit for a loose wheel. The last race at Dover is much more recent, and while it may not accurately predict a drivers skill at the high-banked half-mile track in Bristol, it should reveal which teams are building the best high horsepower, low downforce race cars. At Dover, Bowman drove to the front and took the lead on pit road. He then cruised to victory in clean air with his Hendrick teammates finishing second, third and fourth.

All eyes will be on Clayton Kershaw in his return to the mound on Monday, but my focus isnt on him in that game. Heres what I like on DraftKings Sportsbook for Mondays MLB action.
If you want to sweat out these picks with me, follow me on Twitter: @Nick_Friar.
Juan Soto is the lone concern here. That can be said for pretty much every pitcher facing the Nationals, but thats absolutely the case for Alcantara. The Washington outfielder has taken the right-hander deep a couple times in his young career, and Miamis Monday night starting pitcher will see him twice through the first five innings.
But outside of Soto, Alcantara doesnt have much else to be worried about. Aside from his Sept. 2 start vs. the Mets, Alcantara has been rolling since his brutal trip to Coors Field. Following that Aug. 6 outing in Colorado, Alcantara has made six starts, holding opponents under two runs through the first five innings in four of them. And three of those four outings in which he shut down his opponents, Alcantara faced lineups with a better OPS and ISO against righties over the past month than Washington.
The Giants have struck out against right-handed pitching quite a bit this season, posting the sixth-worst K rate against righties to this point. While theyve struck out more frequently on the road against righties at Oracle Park in 2021, San Francisco is still tied for 10th in strikeout rate against righties at home. Over the past month, however, the Giants have been striking out more at home against righties than on the road, ranking among the three worst teams in terms of home K rate over the past month.
Darvish has far from lived up to his All-Star nod since the 2021 Midsummer Classic, but that also means hes due. This is a lineup he did well against earlier in the season, and Darvish has hit the over on Mondays strikeout prop in two of the three starts hes made since returning from the 10-day injured list in late August.
And while the Giants had a fun time in Colorado recently and just dismantled the Cubs theyve largely not done much damage against good right-handed starting pitching over the last month. Sure they took it to Walker Buehler a few series ago, but Kyle Hendricks also just held San Francisco hitters to one run over six innings in a series where the Giants went off.
The Dodgers havent put up great numbers against right-handers at home recently, but that has to change at some point. This lineup ranks among the top 10 in OPS, ISO and wOBA against right-handed pitchers this season. Zac Gallen has been solid for Arizona this year, but I cant imagine him stifling the Dodgers like he did at the end of July.
And I have even less faith in Arizonas relievers, who let L.A. finish with six runs when Gallen last took the mound vs. the Dodgers, despite his strong six-inning effort. The Diamondbacks bullpen ranks among the 10 worst in FIP, ERA and WHIP over the past month, which is on par with how theyve performed all season.

Top NJ Regulator To Books: "Regulate Sportsbook Advertising Or We Will" – Legal Sports Report
Posted: at 6:27 am
The NFL is back and so are the sportsbook ads.
Operators are planning to spend $1 billion on advertising NFL betting this season, per Front Office Sports. But operators need to curb themselves or face a backlash, key regulators warned on Monday.
Speaking on a GeoComply webinar Monday, David Rebuck, director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), warned some marketing departments were operating unchecked. Specifically, Rebuck highlighted:
Rebuck offered this warning to operators:
Dont allow your marketing staff to operate unchecked. They can get you in a lot of trouble because they have different objectives to you. They are not thinking about compliance. We understand the business need. They want to attract people and be creative but they cannot be unchecked.
If they are, they will be checked by us and it will happen in a way you wont be happy with.
As an example, Rebuck said in the early days of NJ sports betting, his staff would go through the terms of every sportsbook promotion. They stopped that practice given the number of operators, but that could change if standards do not improve.
Do I have to go back to blocking promotions until they are pre-approved by the state of New Jersey? Rebuck asked. That would be very challenging for the state but if I am forced to do it, I will do it.
Dan Hartman, Rebucks counterpart in Colorado, echoed a similar sentiment. He said he was already hearing from concerned legislators about the hailstorm of advertising.
They are saying this is too much, we did not expect this much, Hartman said. Sportsbooks need to find a balance because the last thing you want is to have advertising legislated.
The webinar highlighted two parallels for a potential backlash: daily fantasy sports in 2015 and the UK gambling industry.
Both regulators called on operators to work together through trade groups like the AGA or IDEA Growth to come up with an advertising best-practice handbook.
You shouldnt be waiting for regulators to drive the bus, Rebuck added. You should be at the head of table driving action with your vendors, contractors and marketers. And strive for best practices.
Dont race to the bottom, race to the top.

Scout Gaming kicks off second half year with multiple deals and sportsbook launch – marketscreener.com
Posted: at 6:27 am
From June until now Scout Gaming has secured five agreements, of which four will be participating in the real money network. In addition, Scout has launched its Sportsbook on the first B2B client and is close to launching a previously disclosed collaborative venture with Razer Inc., the world's leading life-style brand for gamers.
Scout Gaming, the world's leading global provider of B2B Daily Fantasy Sports, Sportsbook, Fantasy betting and other related sport betting products has put pen to paper to several deals following this summer, of which four will be part of the world's largest networked real money fantasy games, the Scout Gaming Network (SGN).
Recently, four new contracts with iGaming operators joining the network have been signed, out of which one operator has already gone live and two planned to launch before the end of the month. Last week a previously signed operator went live, making the total number of operators in SGN reach ten. With the addition of what is under integration, including Swedish market leader ATG, the number of SGN operators is expected to surpass fifteen by the end of year which would also mean that the number of SGN operators would then have doubled in less than 6 months.
Amongst the operators recently signed is Golden Matrix Group, a publicly traded Las Vegas based US turnkey content and white-label provider focusing on emerging markets. Another noteworthy addition is Olympic Entertainment Group, an Estonian licensed and regulated land-based and online casino operator who is currently number 1 online operator in Estonia, and top three in Baltics overall.
In addition to the growth of the real money network, Scout is bringing several new products to market. One of which is via a collaboration project with Razer Inc. the world's leading lifestyle brand for gamers and innovator in the field of e-sports. The parties have collaborated in recent months to develop a mobile app(IOS/Android). Razer operates the world's largest gamer focused ecosystem of hardware, software and related services and its roughly 150 million users will be able to enjoy Scout's products by connecting their RazerID through the app.
A couple a weeks ago, the market leading Norwegian operator, Norsk Tipping went live with Scout Gaming's software. They are currently under a beta-test for real-money-gaming which so far has met their expectations. It is the first time in eight years, a new gaming vertical for real money has been launched on the Norwegian market. Norsk Tipping are collecting customer feedback before going into a full market launch. We have long-term high expectations on Norsk Tipping to deliver substantial liquidity to SGN.
Adding to achievements, Scout has since 2019 been developing a Sportsbook on its proprietary tech stack, which entails setting up and growing an in-house odds trading and risk department. The Sportsbook via Fanteam.com and with the recent addition of live odds markets plus a long list of features planned in upcoming releases during the remainder of the year, the Sportsbook is now in the process of full commercialization.. In a given week the Sportsbook is covering roughly 20,000 betting markets spanning across 50+ international sports & leagues of which a sizable portion is attributable to Player Performance Odds also referred to as `fantasy bets', unique betting markets only available via Scout Gaming. The first `full Sportsbook B2B client went live this month already taking bets via the Scout Sportsbook.
Andreas Ternstrm, Chief Executive Officer at Scout Gaming, said: "It's with great pride when I recognize the rate at which our team is continuing to push boundaries. We continuously sign and launch operators at a rapid pace whilst executing on an ambitious roadmap. The level at which this company is bringing new products to life is one that I have never seen before. This is owed to the investments made in not only our own technology but the people that create it. It's taken us a while to get here but in return we are building an extremely strong foundation for continuous growth over many years to come"

MLB Best Bets: Baseball Picks, Predictions, Odds to Consider on DraftKings Sportsbook for September 12 – DraftKings Nation

Its Sunday, and that means weve got a jam-packed slate with plenty of games to choose from in the afternoon and so many valuable lines out there that its hard to pick just a few. With that said, here are my best MLB bets to consider on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Im treating this game the same as Friday nights, when the Reds faced one of the worst lefties in the game in Jon Lester. While Cincinnati is bad against left-handers, no one is bad enough in that department to warrant a blind fade against J.A. Happ.
The graying Happ has now seen his ERA balloon to 16.50 this year, and hes allowed 11 runs in his last two starts, spanning six innings. One of those was an outing against the Reds which lasted just one inning, seeing Happ allow seven earned runs on eight hits.
That should be all the proof you need that the Reds can hit this guy, and its not as if the outing can be treated as a fluke given how bad hes been this year. With Sonny Gray on the hill, Im confident Cincinnati can get a big win in a game with potentially huge playoff implications.

Speaking of hitting lefties, the Diamondbacks are actually decent at it, and the Mariners are very bad. Seattle ranks all the way down in 25th with a 93 wRC+ against southpaws this year, and can not be trusted against a pitcher as talented as Tyler Gilbert, who has been effective since making waves with a no-hitter in his first career start.
Yusei Kikuchi has also been very bad, with a 6.04 ERA after the All-Star break which has been a result of poor peripherals. The lefty has allowed 10.2% more hard-hit balls this year and has a to face a lineup surprisingly competent against southpaws. I think there is a big skew in the matchup here and the underdog should be given a long look.
Weve seen this movie before. Blake Snell enters with bad ERA indicators and in the midst of a bad season, runs into the Dodgers. At that point, he shuts them down over seven innings because L.A. cant hit lefties.
Snell has actually turned it into overdrive since his last dominant outing against the Dodgers with 21 strikeouts over his last two outings, spanning 14 innings, with just a couple runs allowed.
Max Scherzer will have the benefit of facing a team hitting .239 over the last two weeks with a below-average 97 wRC+ in that time, and he will potentially be pitching for the Cy Young Award here. I love this spot for the under.

MLB Best Bets: Baseball Picks, Predictions, Odds to Consider on DraftKings Sportsbook for September 9 – DraftKings Nation

Its Thursday, and that not only means the weekend is around the corner, it means weve got plenty of baseball on the docket. Ive taken a look at the entire card and I think Ive picked out three winners.
Here are my best MLB bets to consider on DraftKings Sportsbook.
All odds provided by DraftKings Sportsbook and all odds subject to change.
The Phillies are right in the thick of the playoff race, and sit sixth with a 117 wRC+ over the last two weeks. Theyve been crushing the ball, but a poor performance from their bullpen and some inexplicably bad starts from their pitchers that have generally been great this year have set them back a bit. With a lethal combination of offense and shaky pitching, I think this is a good spot for the over.
Ranger Suarez cant realistically be expected to pitch to the numbers hes been pitching to, given he is dealing with a triceps issue, and also considering the Rockies have a good .780 OPS against lefties. Im also very interested in fading Antonio Senzatela on the road, where he has a 4.56 ERA. Both offenses should come out hot here.
The trend of Thursday night overs on this slate will continue with the Yankees and Jays. I dont really need to go into detail on Toronto, which possesses perhaps the best offense in baseball at the moment with a league-leading .848 OPS over the last 14 days and very few strikeouts to be found.
Toronto has also beaten up on lefties this year, and should find a way through Nestor Cortes, Jr., who has regressed in the last few starts after a very fast start to his career as a starting pitcher.
On the other hand, Jose Berrios pitched a lot more like his xERA which rests in the mid-fours in his last outing against Oakland. Berrios career as a Toronto Blue Jays starter hasnt been filled with great outings, posting a 3.53 ERA in April thanks to one really great outing against the Tigers. The rest of the results have been tough to stomach, and I think against a hungry Yankees team, he shouldnt have much fun.
Dont sleep on the Nationals offense in this one, which has ranked 11th in hard-hit rate in the last two weeks and has made contact at around a 76% rate in that span, which is essentially average. They will face a strikeout-reliant righty in Huascar Ynoa on Thursday, whose propensity for allowing exit velocity has caught up to him in recent starts.
Eric Fedde is arguably just as bad with his 4.90 xERA, and he doesnt even have the strikeout upside like Ynoa to redeem himself at just 21.2%. The Braves are a middling offense right now, but they have everything in the world to play for and will run into a very bad pitcher with a talented offense. The Nationals are playing inspired ball. Im going to side with the over here.
