Canada is another step closer to legalizing single-event sports betting, with a new bill proposing to overturn a federal ban on this kind of wagering recently securing approval in the House of Commons.

Currently, Canadian law only allows for parlay bets, meaning wagers must be placed on multiple selections, all of which have to come good for the parlay to win. If Bill C-218 becomes law, however, the market will potentially be opened up to sportsbooks offering single-event bets. It will signal the start of a new era, just as the overturning of a similar federal law in the US did in 2018.

Although technically outlawed, single-event gambling has not been impossible in Canada. Speaking in parliament, MP Kevin Waugh pointed out that single-event sports gambling is a $14 billion dollar industry in Canada, with the money going into the pockets of off-shore betting sites and black market bookies.

Summing up the problem with illegal betting, Waugh said, There are no consumer protections in place. There are no problem gambling programs offered and no guidelines that bookmakers are required to follow. This also means that the economic benefits are not being felt by Canadians.

While Canada may be poised to enjoy a big cash injection through the legalisation of single-event sports betting, what about the issues that come with opening up legal gambling? Canada will inevitably want to look at other nations which have long since allowed it, and learn lessons from the challenges and controversies theyve dealt with.

Problem gambling and young fans

One of the issues with opening up sports betting is the potential risk of a rise in problem gambling. According to a study by the University of Guelph, sports bettors are at a higher risk of problem gambling compared to other types of gamblers. However, the problem isnt so much with sports betting itself, as it is with the typical personalities of people who enjoy betting on sports. According to the researchers, sports gamblers tend to have a more optimistic, idealistic attitude towards gambling compared to non-sports gamblers.

Since the US Supreme Court repealed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PAPSA) in 2018, a whole string of states have chosen to allow legal sports betting, yielding useful data on gambling patterns. A large-scale study by the American Gaming Association shows that 69% of sports bettors are male, with 45% in the 23-34 year old age bracket.

The takeaway from such research is that gaming authorities and charities in Canada may need to focus particular attention on younger, male gamblers who can so often fall into risky behaviour patterns. At the same time, lessons should also be learned from countries like the UK, where the widespread availability of betting sites on platforms like smartphones has seen a steep rise in women problem gamblers. Experts have highlighted that social stigma rooted in expectations that women are level-headed caregivers can lead to females flying under the radar when it comes to gambling addiction.

The UK has a long-established sports betting market, with gambling being further opened up with the Gambling Act 2005. An issue that has caused concern is the potential targeting of adolescents by gambling firms. A recent University of Stirling study showed that 96% of 11-24 year olds had seen some sort of gambling marketing in the previous month.

While there have been attempts to mitigate the issue for example, by banning gambling adverts during live sports games broadcast before 9pm controlling the problem on social media has become more of a challenge. Social media accounts for betting companies may feature content thats interesting to young sports fans, especially when it comes to esports. This is another potential minefield that legislators in Canada may have to navigate.

Normalization of sports betting

Canadian lawmakers may also want to consider the significant controversy around how marketing sports betting can inextricably link sports with gambling within the culture. One of the countries with the highest gambling losses per adult is Australia. In 2017-18, this stood at a huge $1,292 AUD per adult for the year, with sports betting losses seeing the largest percentage increase. A 2017 article in the Harm Reduction Journal explored the normalisation of gambling in sports, and concluded that marketing aimed at young men was strongly linked to this mindset.

Many participants in the Australian study talked about how sports commentary links the game with gambling, using specific betting language and focusing on performances and stats. Some sports broadcasts rely on odds given by bookmakers, even crossing over to them during the broadcast to give live odds. In the words of the report, Most participants stated that crossing to bookmakers throughout the match had become such a normal part of the game that they rarely thought to challenge the presence of these forms of promotions.

In the UK, theres been fiery debates around gambling companies advertising on soccer shirts. Eight Premier League teams currently advertise gambling companies on their team kit, while money from the gambling industry is also poured into lower-level leagues. Campaigners in the UK have long been voicing strong opposition to this influence, though they have had pushback from figures within football who cite the lifeline that lucrative sponsorships have brought the sport, particularly during the economic catastrophe of Covid-19. A new era of sports gambling in Canada may well bring such debates to the Great White North.

Creating laws and setting limits

Another challenge is getting gambling legislation right. For example, the UKs Gambling Act 2005 was written at a time when online sports betting was still evolving, before the rise of smartphones made it accessible in an unprecedented way. The UK is set to update its gambling laws in 2021, and its speculated that there may be sweeping changes regarding online stake limits, deposit payment methods, and advertising. There will also be a review of VIP and loyalty schemes, which often target sports bettors, and can carry a higher risk of fraud and problem gaming.

Right now, many companies operating within the industry including sites aimed at Canadian bettors make a point of applying their own regulatory standards. For example, affiliate site BestOnlineCasino.ca vets its listed operators, making sure they meet compliance standards before recommending them to users.

Reputable online casinos and sportsbooks also have their own policies and tools to help people gamble responsibly, from deposit limits to algorithms that can detect risky behaviour.

The upshot is that, if and when Canada brings in single-event sports betting, it will have other countries experiences to draw on, and legislators will no doubt be looking around to see what kind of laws have been introduced and whatll need to be included from day one.

As such, it could be argued that Canada has a significant advantage over other countries which implemented sports betting years or decades ago. While places like the UK have had to tweak and adapt legislation over time (with the UK Gambling Commission recently slapping online casinos with new rules on how slot games operate, for example), Canada will have a much clearer view of the ramifications of sports betting. Its clear that the lawmakers know the potential impact of legalisation, but now its up to them to ensure they build a framework for safe and fair gambling in the country.

LEAN to theWIZARDS (-145) only because Im confident enough in them to lay the points but wouldnt mind a bet on their money line (ML).

Both teams have been playing awful lately. In fact, the only team with a worse net rating than the Wizards over the past nine games has been the Nets.

But Washingtons losses are more excusable since it has less top-tier talent and the Wizards have played a murderers row of opponents recently.

Here are Washingtons past five opponents with their net ratings in parentheses: Miami (tied fourth), Phoenix (tied first), Philly (tied ninth), Milwaukee (tied fourth) and Memphis (third).

Furthermore, I give the Wizards a massive motivation edge. Washington PGSpencer Dinwiddiewas a former Net who was traded to the Wizards so Brooklyn could avoid paying more luxury tax.

Dinwiddie should be excited to kick the Nets while they are down.

Also, Washington needs this game more than Brooklyn. The Wizards are 1.5 games back of the Hawks for the 10th, the final play-in seed in a competitive East.

The bottom line is this Nets thing stinks and the Wizards are playing the only team performing worse than them at home.

BET WIZARDS -2.5 (-115) for 1.25 units unless you take Washingtons ML.

The ATS trends for both teams are ugly but they are far worse for the Nets. During its 9-game losing streak, Brooklyn has the worst ATS margin in the NBA (minus-9.1), according to CleaningTheGlass.com (CTG).

Plus, Nets PG Kyrie Irvingisnt a player that can be the leader of a winning team. When he is on the floor without Harden or KD this season, Brooklyn is outscored by 3.3 points per 100 possessions and has the worst rebounding rate in the Association.

Slight lean to theOVER 217.5 (-115) for a tiny wager, if at all, because I much prefer the Washington side.

However, Brooklyn cant play any defense and has the worst defensive-rebounding rate over the last nine games. Washington SF Kyle Kuzmaand C Montrezl Harrelcrash the glass and can get easy second-chance points in this matchup.

So, the expectations from the event are pretty high and we are looking forward to having a productive show.

Are you bringing any specific innovation or any product that you want to stand out from the rest?

We are coming to GAT first of all with a much more content-rich sportsbook product which, for Digitain, is the product of main focus. Here I want to especially mention that we have recently crossed the line of 90,000 monthly live events which is an outstanding result forour trading department. You will also be present at SAGSE Latam in Buenos Aires, what will be your proposal there?

And of course, this is a good prerequisite for Digitain to show more presence in regulated markets like Colombia where GLI is accepted as an official standard.

Also,it seems that Live Casino will have a hierarchical place in Digitain's actions, with the appointment of Matthew Charlesworth to head the category. What are your goals there?

Live Casino is a relatively new direction for Digitain when it comes to our own product line. And I want to mention here that we spent a considerable amount of time conceptualizing and planning the vision of the product as we really wanted to come up with a high-quality product that will successfully earn its well-deserved place in todays crazy competition among industry peers. In this respect, we are proud to have Matthew on the team as one of the industry-leading specialists in this vertical.

The legalization of gaming in Brazil is still on the agenda for this year, and in the LatAm region different regulations are advancing by leaps and bounds, are you looking to take advantage of the full potential of these markets?

It is already a long time since Brazil has embarked upon legalizing sports betting in the country and I hope it will eventually happen this year. For Digitain, Brazil is a strategic country here in LatAm as we really have a very good football offering and localized interface. With more and more LatAm countries gradually taking real steps to legalize gaming, this opens new doors for gaming companies like Digitain. With this in mind, as per our regional expansion strategy, we are looking forward to having a LatAm-based commercial unit that will be responsible for identifying new business opportunitiesfor Digitain.

Not much has changed from yesterday to today. The Kings traded what seems like half their roster away for Domantas Sabonis and he wont play, so itll be DeAaron Fox and the Little Rascals against a Minnesota team that is on absolute fire.

The Timberwolves have now scored at least 115 points in six straight games and rank 2nd in the league in offensive rating over their last 15. They likely wont shoot 22/44 from beyond the arc like they did last night, but they wont need to.

Sacramento has a bottom-10 offense and the 25th-ranked defensive rating over their last 10. And all those games came with Buddy Hield and Tyrese Haliburton, whom they just traded away.

Minnesota should roll to another easy win. Im tempted to grab the over after yesterdays game put up 248 points, but the line being at only 232.5 feels like a trap. Indiana Jones I am not, but I can dodge a good trap from time to time.

Thus, Im sticking with just the Timberwolves -8 (-110) as they continue to rise in the Western Conference standings.

Colorado's online and retail sportsbook took in $461.4 million in wagers in December, up 62.6% from $284.6 million in December 2020, according to data released Monday by the Colorado Division of Gaming. December's handle which included $454.9 million in online bets, or 98.6% of the total handle extended a hot streak that included $475.4 million in November and a record $491.5 million in October.

Bettors fared better in December after sportsbooks won a record-shattering $36.8 million in gross revenue in November. But Sportsbooks still grossed $24.7 million from December's bets, which was up 44.2% from $17.2 million in December 2020. Net sports betting proceeds fell to $5.3 million from $5.7 million in December 2020, well short of the record $19.3 million in November. The month's win yielded $770,370 in state taxes, breaking a two-month streak of tax revenue greater than $1 million.

The first full year of legal sports betting in Colorado brought explosive growth throughout. In 2021, Colorado sportsbooks generated:

"By nearly every metric Colorado is hitting above its weight class, with the exception of the tax revenue sports betting generates," said Eric Ramsey, analyst for the PlayUSA.com network, which includes PlayColorado.com. "Importantly, tax revenue ramped up at the end of the year, which is a positive development. That could continue as the market expands and sportsbooks begin to taper their promotions."

One reason why sportsbooks were able to finish the year on a high note is the increasing popularity of basketball betting, particularly the NBA. Pro football was the hottest ticket in December with $136.5 million in wagers, down slightly from $140.3 million in November. But pro basketball was just behind with $125.5 million in bets, up from $124.7 million in November.

In the end, it was pro basketball that drew the most bets in 2021 with $958 million in wagers. Meanwhile, pro football took in $689.2 million in 2021.

"Interest in the Nuggets combined with the Broncos' struggles contributed to the leveling of interest in football and basketball in December," said Ian St. Clair, lead analyst for PlayColorado.com. "Football is popular in every legal U.S. market. But a hallmark of the highest volume U.S. markets is that the NBA, with its 82-game regular season and long postseason, tends to be a more consistent bet producer than the NFL. Colorado is clearly fitting into that pattern."
