Betting Odds Reveal Lakers’ Likely Next Head Coach – LA Sports Hub
Posted: June 3, 2024 at 8:59 pm
Usually it might annoy a fanbase to have every single detail of their head coaching search constantly made the center of a national conversation. But for Los Angeles Lakers fans, at least that has had the effect of outcompeting the Bronny James speculation at times.
And seriously, the Lakers head coach decision is a really crucial one for the franchise. It could help them keep LeBron James. It could help set the tone for the team as it looks to transition into a post-LeBron era. It's going to have a massive impact one way or the other.
And that importance has made it the only head coaching search with odds posted on DraftKings Sportsbook. The betting markets send a crystal clear message.

So right away there are a couple of obvious caveats that need to be made. First, some of these names almost feel like jokes. I mean, if Rajon Rondo is the eighth most likely candidate on the list, the list probably doesn't need to be more than seven names long. So yeah, I'm going to avoid giving much attention to the "will Pau Gasol be the Lakers' next head coach?" conversation here.
The other is more technical you'll notice those implied probabilities add up to over 100%. That's because the sportsbooks inflate each line slightly to make sure they're making a profit. But for our purposes, that distinction doesn't matter too much.
Whether J.J. Redick is exactly 67.7% or James Borrego is exactly 20.0% is really not that important (or even possible to truly quantify). But what it does show is that the betting markets thing Redick is about 3 times as likely as Borrego (the second-most likely option) to be named Lakers head coach. And that Borrego himself is about twice as likely as Sam Cassell in the third place.
And that sends an obvious message: this is Redick's job to lose. Or at least that's what the general sports betting community believes.
To me, it's probably too early in the process to consider someone that big of a favorite. Reports are that this search is nowhere near concluded. Redick is such an out-of-left-field candidate that it's going to take more than speculation to make him really feel like a significant favorite.
Of course, his being an unusual candidate might make him more likely. This head coaching job isn't necessarily one that many assistants will be clamoring for. The opportunity to make the leap from assistant to head coach is not easy to come by, and it's risky to do it in a notoriously difficult situation with the Lakers. Guys like Borrego and Cassell may decide to play it safer. Even if those were the Lakers' preferred candidates, that might not matter.
These betting odds will certainly undergo some major changes before all is said and done and anyone has officially been named head coach, and it will be interesting to see just how savvy the market ends up being.

Iowa-based athletes in betting inquiry sue, say rights violated – ESPN

More than two dozen athletes who were based in Iowa filed a federal lawsuit Friday alleging that state criminal investigators violated their constitutional rights by using geolocation software to track activity on their cellphones as part of a widespread sports wagering inquiry that resulted in criminal charges and the loss of NCAA eligibility.
At issue in the 47-page lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa is whether the state's criminal investigators needed a search warrant before using a program from third-party company GeoComply to find athletes -- including many who were under 21, the legal betting age in Iowa -- and conduct searches to examine their online wagering activity.
The plaintiffs are 26 current and former athletes: 16 from the University of Iowa, nine from Iowa State and one from a community college in central Iowa. Thirteen played football, six wrestled and the other seven played baseball or basketball.
"The lives of these young men have been disrupted and altered in way[s] still yet to be fully seen," Matt Boles, Adam Witosky and Van Plumb, the attorneys for the plaintiffs, said in a statement. "It is our hope that through the civil action we can help these young men put their lives back on track and gain a measure of justice for the violation of their rights."
The lawsuit alleges the state; its Department of Public Safety, Division of Criminal Investigation; and its agents violated the athletes' civil rights by using the GeoComply software without a warrant to identify phones using mobile sports betting apps within Iowa and Iowa State athletic facilities.
2 Related
The DCI declined to comment when reached Friday about the lawsuit.
GeoComply provides geolocation software to major sportsbooks to monitor users. The lawsuit notes that when users register with online betting companies, they "consent to share their location data with GeoComply, who in turn provides this data back to the companies." Written policies from DraftKings and FanDuel, the two online sportsbooks the athletes used, tell users the companies may disclose personally identifying information to law enforcement.
DCI agents were given access to the GeoComply platform, and it was licensed through the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, which regulates gambling in the state.
While state investigators subsequently had warrants to obtain and search the athletes' phones, the lawsuit alleges those warrants were "invalid and unconstitutional" because the information used to justify them was acquired without a warrant. The plaintiffs also say DCI supervisors failed to properly train their staff and intervene when they learned of the alleged actions.
Sixteen of the plaintiffs were criminally charged, and 12 of them pleaded guilty to underage gambling. Four athletes were charged with identity theft, a felony. Their cases were dismissed in March after prosecutors in Story County, responding to arguments raised by defense attorneys, filed a motion noting that new evidence showed state investigators "exceeded the scope of its permitted use" of GeoComply's program.
The other 10 plaintiffs were not charged with crimes, but the investigation resulted in a loss of playing time, the threat of NCAA or NFL sanctions and/or damage to their athletic career, the lawsuit states. Some athletes who were not charged lost some or all of their remaining eligibility when schools learned of their wagering activity.
The NCAA prohibits athletes from betting on any sport it sponsors at any level.
The attorneys have asked for actual and punitive damages for each plaintiff.
The lawsuit alleges DCI agents told the athletes they were not the targets of the investigation but rather were assisting in an inquiry of sports betting companies.
Several athletes told ESPN that DCI agents came to their residences on May 2 and asked them to turn over their cellphones, which were returned the same day. The athletes said their family members and others whose names were on betting accounts also had their phones searched.
In March, DCI commissioner Stephan Bayens, who is a defendant in the suit, said in a statement that prosecutors repeatedly told his agency they believed the actions taken in the investigation were legal. "I fully stand behind the investigation and the agents who did the work," he said.

Online sports betting is nearly a reality in Vermont thanks to House Bill 127 being signed into law by Gov. Phil Scott in June 2023.
We could see the launch of online sportsbooks as early as January 2024, making the recent news of Penn Entertainment and ESPN forming a joint partnership relevant to prospective sports bettors in the state.
The newly formed ESPN BET is expected to launch in the 16 states where Penn Entertainment already had (and currently has) licenses to operateformerly operating as Barstool Sportsbook.
However, the expectation is that the number will increase as Penn Entertainment applies for licenses in states that are launching soon such as North Carolina, Kentucky, and Vermont. With that in mind, heres what bettors in the Green Mountain State should know about this potential launch.

Its not a surprise that ESPN is finally getting into the online sports betting scene. The media mogul has created numerous sports betting television programs over the last few years.
On their traditional programming, ESPN often analyzes sports betting markets, daily sports betting odds, and more.
ESPN had an agreement with Caesars Sportsbook to use Caesars' odds on the network, and it was rumored to be in talks with DraftKings about a potential partnership.
What had been a long time coming finally became official with their joint announcement with Penn Entertainment. It puts them squarely in the spotlight of the online sports betting space, and they should become one of the premier operators in the industry as the brand continues to grow. That eventually should include Vermont once operators launch in the state.

There are still two significant hurdles that need to be reached before we begin talking about a potential ESPN BET Vermont promo code. Vermont will need to launch online sports betting (which we know will happen at some point) and Penn Entertainment will need to apply for and receive a license to operate in the Green Mountain State.
Once those things happen, well gain clarity on what a potential welcome bonus offer will look like for bettors who use the appropriate ESPN BET Vermont promo code. Also, bettors can look forward to great features from ESPN BET Vermont, including odds boosts, insurance, same-game parlays, a rewards program, and more.
ESPN BET will likely offer new customers amazing promotions pre-launch and on launch day, as we usually experience with the top sports betting apps. Also, the sportsbooks offer different recurring promotions; we think ESPN BET wont be the exception. These might be some of the best potential ESPN BETVermontpromos new customers might expect to get once ESPN BETVT is available:
ESPN BET might likely feature Bet & Get offers for new customers. These Bet & Get offers might be similar to what BetMGM Sportsbook offers on Bet $5, Get $200 in bonus bets, or like FanDuel Bet $5, Get $200 in bonus bets. These Bet & Get offers are fantastic to start betting because you get bonus funds right away.
ESPN BET will likely offer odds boosts on all the big NFL, College Football, and NBA games when ESPN BET launches in November. Look for your favorite teams like the New England Patriots, Vermont Catamounts, and Boston Celtics to have the best possible odds for all customers to use!
First-bet bonuses are great for new customers. While we are yet to know if the ESPN BET promo code will offer a first bet bonus, we would expect it to be similar to the Caesars promo code offer of a $ 1,000 First Bet Bonus which gives back your first bet amount, if your bet loses.
Up to $1,500 in Bonus Bets if Your First Bet Loses Promo Code: BOOKIES

Online sportsbooks know that the more promotions they offer players, the more likely they are to use them to place bets. And because ESPN and Penn Entertainment are such major players in the space, we expect that they will provide players with some of the top offers for daily use by all players.
This could include anything from an elite rewards program, odds boost on the biggest player and team props of a given sports night, same-game parlays, and more.
Well know more once we get closer to a launch date, but bettors are going to love whats available to them each time they log in to place their bets.

We could see online sports betting in Vermont as early as January 2024. If Penn Entertainment applies for a license, ESPN BET Vermont could be one of the operators that launches right away.
Well gain some clarity as we get closer to the official launch of online sports bettingand ESPN BET could launch in other states this fall.
Penn Entertainment and Barstool Sportsbook were operating in 16 states, and ESPN BET will launch in those same areas: Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. That number will increase in the states that are adding online sports betting in 2023 and 2024, including North Carolina, Kentucky, Vermont, and others.
Barstool Sports found it difficult to compete in a highly regulated online sports betting market, and Penn Entertainment jumped at the opportunity to team up with ESPN, the biggest name in sports. Considering their massive audience, 24/7 television programming, a handful of apps and streaming capabilities, and more, its apparent why Penn Entertainment made the move they did.

Minnesota senator’s arrest could upend sports betting, other bills – iGaming Business
Posted: at 11:25 am
The fate of any business including legalising sports betting getting done in the Minnesota legislature was thrown into jeopardy late last week. Senator Nicole Mitchell was arrested early on Monday (22 April) morning, and has since been removed from her committee and caucus assignments, according to a statement from Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy.
In what could be a blow to the Minnesota sports betting bill, Senator Mitchell was arrested for a burglary that she said is a family situation blown out of proportion. She said in a statement that I am confident that a different picture will emerge when all the facts are know.
Mitchell said she wanted to retrieve her deceased fathers ashes and was checking in on a family member with Alzheimers, according to media reports. The arrest took place in the early morning hours of 22 April.
However the criminal situation plays out, Mitchells arrest has left the Minnesota senate in a quandary. It now has 33 Democrats and 33 Republicans. The Democrats, who hold the majority, will now need Republican votes to pass legislation. That could upend sports betting, historical horse racing and many other issues.
Democratic representative Zack Stephenson has been championing legal sports betting for four years. This time around, he has a bill that is set for a hearing in the house taxes committee on Tuesday (30 April) morning. Stephenson has a second bill working its way through the house that would ban historic horse racing machines. There are also several legal sports betting bills moving through the senate.
Should either bill get out of the house, the Democrats currently dont have a majority in the senate. Stephenson would need Republican senators to sign on.
Stephenson earlier this session brokered a deal between charitable gaming and the states Indian tribes. At the time, it appeared to move a deal for online sports betting forward. The house bill would give the tribes exclusivity and allow for digital gaming with platforms tethered to tribal casinos.
The states two horse tracks would receive $625,000 under the bill, but would not be entitled to offer wagering. The tracks have vigorously fought the bill. Previous senate bills have included the tracks, a non-starter for the tribes.
The pathway to legal sports betting has been muddied by lawsuits. It has also been hindered by a decision to allow HHR by the Minnesota Racing Commission and other issues.
Mitchell is the vice-chair of the senate state and local government and veterans elections committee. The committee currently has two legal sports betting bills assigned to it.
Minnesotas legislative session is set to end on 20 May.

Braves vs. Mariners, 9:40 ET

Braves vs. Mariners, 9:40 ET
This weekend wasn't terrible. It wasn't exactly good either, but we have been on a nice run over the past couple of weeks and I want to extend the run as long as I can before the inevitable struggle. Baseball is probably my favorite sport to bet, but my least favorite sport to watch. It is probably the reason that I'm good at sports betting though. I have seen and interpreted the different stats while also incorporating a bit of the eye test. It seems like there are more stats in baseball than any other sport as well. When I saw something today for the Braves and Mariners, it didn't pass that eye test, but I had to back it up with stats to be sure.
This probably will come as a shock to none of the regular readers, or even a passive fan, but the Braves are once again a great baseball team. They've played so well over the past few years, even a short losing streak would make you a bit surprised. Right now, they've won four of their past five games and have been amazing both on the road and at home. Their 19-7 record is among the best in the MLB and there are no reasons to think they would slow down any time soon. Their offense was incredibly dominant last season, and I thought it might regress a bit this year. So far, it is essentially the same. Their pitching staff has some great arms, including today's starter Max Fried. He hasn't looked great overall this season with 14 earned runs allowed in five starts. However, he is coming off his best start of the season when he threw a complete game shutout. There have only been two quality starts from Fried this season. In his worst starts, he has allowed 10 earned runs over five innings. Maybe it just took a moment for him to get back on track?

Just like the Braves somewhat replicating their season from last year, the Mariners are pretty similar. Seattle is off to around a .500 record and will likely hover around that mark for most of the season. I like the Marines to be honest, but they seem to fluctuate between winning streaks and losing streaks without gaining much ground, or losing too much. The team is capable of getting hot and reeling off wins - that's why they were in the playoff race last season. Currently, the Mariners have won three of their past five games. None of those games have gone over seven runs combined from the two teams. Most of that is due to a very strong pitching staff from the Mariners, and obviously just enough hitting. Tonight, they send out Bryce Miller to the hill to combat Fried. Miller has been very good this year with three quality starts and not allowing more than two earned runs in any of his past four outings. In fact, on the season he has only allowed seven earned runs over 28.1 innings. The biggest issue with Miller is that he does allow home runs and we know the Braves are capable of hitting dingers. He's faced the Braves before and has held them to just three hits in 19 at-bats.
You won't see too many games with the Braves involved that are going to have a total of just 7.5. The Braves offense is capable of putting up seven or eight runs by themselves almost any night. However, with Fried looking good lately and Miller pitching for the Mariners, I think the pitching might be able to get the edge. I also very rarely like a team going from the east to the west with no rest. The Braves body clock will be almost 10 PM when this game starts. They could probably roll out of bed and hit, but this is a good chance for a Mariners win and the under. I'll play just the under, but I do think the Mariners are live dogs here.

Boston Celtics vs Miami Heat Odds, Picks, Props & Injury Reports for Game 4 – Sports Betting Dime

Apr 27, 2024; Miami, Florida, USA; Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro (14) drives to the basket as Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum (0) defends in the first half during game three of the first round for the 2024 NBA playoffs at Kaseya Center. Mandatory Credit: Jim Rassol-USA TODAY Sports
The #1 Boston Celtics (66-19, 28-14 away, 44-37-4 ATS) can take a 3-1 stranglehold on their best-of-seven first-round series with the Miami Heat (48-39, 23-20 home, 44-41-2 ATS) on Monday night when the teams meet in Game 4 at the Kaseya Center in Miami at 7:10 pm ET.
Boston throttled shorthanded Miami, 104-84, on Saturday and are double-digit favorites to pick up a second straight road win on Monday night.
The Celtics vs Heat odds list Boston as 10.5-point chalk and -520 on the moneyline. The Heat are currently +390 home underdogs in Mondays NBA odds, considerably longer than the +340 odds they carried into Game 3. The game total is sitting at 203.5, down half a point from last game. The first three games of the series have averaged 202.7 PPG, with Games 1 and 3 staying under and Game 2 hitting the over.
Odds as of April 29 2024, at DraftKings. See the full list of DraftKings payment methods to fund your account and bet on Celtics/Heat.
Boston is currently getting 71% of ATS handle in the NBA public betting splits for Monday night but only 50% of moneyline handle as a significant portion of the betting public looks for a big payday on the Heat.
The winner of the Celtics/Heat series will advance to face the winner of the #4 Cleveland Cavaliers vs #5 Orlando Magic series in the 2024 NBA playoff bracket. Cavs/Magic is currently tied at two games apiece as the series shifts back to Cleveland for Game 5 on Tuesday.
Unfortunately for Miami, Jimmy Butler (20.8 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 5.0 APG) remains out with a sprained MCL and is unlikely to return at any point in the first round. Butler averaged a team-high 24.7 PPG when the Heat upset the Celtics in seven games in the Eastern Conference finals last season.
Joining Butler on the sideline is midseason acquisition Terry Rozier (19.8 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 5.6 APG), who hasnt played since April 7 due to a neck injury.
The Celtics have no players listed on their injury report ahead of Game 4.
After a stunning 111-101 upset by Miami in Game 2on the road, the Celtics silenced critics with a decisive 104-84 victory on Saturday, a game they led by an absurd score of 63-39 at halftime. Jayson Tatum had 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds along with six assists, while Jaylen Brown also had 22 points and eight rebounds in just 33 minutes of action. The big early lead allowed Joe Mazzulla to use his bench more than usual; three Boston reserves logged at least 20 minutes.
Bostons defense limited Miami to just 41.6% from the field and the Celtics finished +7 on the glass while forcing 12 Miami turnovers (and committing just five of their own).
Bam Adebayo had a team-high 20 points and nine rebounds for the Heat on 8-of-18 from the field.
Tatum has the highest point total on the board again in Game 4 at 26.5. Hes scored 23, 28, and 22 points in the first three games of the series, but averaged 26.9 PPG during the regular season. Herro has the highest point total for the Heat at 20.5 followed closely by Adebayo at 19.5. Adebayo and Tatum are also tied for the highest rebound total in Game 4 at 9.5.
People have been ruling the Heat out at their peril since the 2023 postseason. While this is a very different team without Butler on the floor, Game 2 showed Miami still has the potential to beat any team on any given night. Saturday was a truly embarrassing performance from Erik Spoelstras group, and I expect amuchbetter effort in the first half on Monday evening.
Miami is listed as a +170 underdog to win the first quarter, which amounts to just a 37% implied probability.

The impacts of banning bonuses on the sports betting and online gaming market in Brazil – Games Magazine Brasil – GAMES MAGAZINE BRASIL
Posted: at 11:25 am
Recently, a new regulation came into force in the sports betting and online gaming scenario in Brazil, bringing with it important changes for financial transaction companies, operators and bettors. This is Normative Ordinance SPA/MF No. 615 (Means of Payment Ordinance), published by the Ministry of Finance and the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) last April 16th, which establishes general rules to be observed in cash transactions. payment made by agents authorized to operate the fixed-odds lottery modality in national territory.
The Payment Methods Ordinance emerged as a legislative response to the growing demands in the sector, governing financial transactions in the Betting market. However, one of the most notable provisions is found in article 3, which addresses the prohibition of advances, advances, bonuses, or prior advantages to bettors (Bonus).
The prohibition of Bonuses, as established in paragraph four of the aforementioned article, prevents operating agents from granting, in any form, Bonuses to bettors, even if as a promotion, publicity or advertisement, with the aim of encouraging the placing of Bets within of their platforms.
Bonuses have been a common strategy not only in Brazil, but in other countries. By offering additional financial advantages to bettors, betting companies are able to attract and retain customers on their platforms, thus increasing their bettor base. However, by prohibiting these practices, the question arises about the impacts of this prohibition on the businesses of betting operating companies.
Firstly, it is important to understand that the Bonus is a practice that refers to offering financial incentives or benefits to bettors before they even place their bets, for example, offering extra money to bet or offering free bets.
For the bettor, initially, the bonus can bring an additional financial advantage, as it can give a feeling of increased potential gains or even mitigate losses when betting. However, it is seen that Law No. 14,790, of December 29, 2023 (Betting Law), came with the prospect of implementing responsible gaming in Brazil and, through this, preventing gaming addiction (ludopathy). The ban on bonuses could be a means of realizing the perspective brought by the Betting Law.
Therefore, despite the potential benefits for bettors, such as the promotion of more responsible gambling, the ban on Bonuses brings challenges for betting operating companies. These companies may face difficulties in attracting new bettors and maintaining the loyalty of existing ones, as Bonuses are often an important attraction for bettors.
Furthermore, the ban on Bonuses may bring uncertainty to companies that will be regulated in Brazil, since those that will not be regulated will continue to carry out these actions on the black market, and because of this, it is necessary for the State to monitor, to avoid reducing the revenue of regulated companies due to possible unfair competition in the Betting market.
From the future perspective on the prohibition of these practices for Betting companies, in a market where there is regulation and inspection by the State, these companies will have to find and/or concentrate other strategies, whether marketing or otherwise, to attract and retain customers on their platforms.
In summary, the ban on Bonuses established by the Payment Methods Ordinance represents a significant change in the Betting market in Brazil, and although it may bring challenges for Betting companies, it also offers opportunities to promote a more responsible gaming environment for bettors.

Elon faculty featured in FOX8 report on legalized sports betting in N.C. – Today at Elon

The report by FOX8's Bob Buckley focused on how the expansion of legal sports betting could impact sports fans and the sports themselves.

The expansion of sports betting into North Carolina and other states is filling state coffers with revenues, as well as those of those taking the bets, while giving sports fans an avenue to put some money behind their passion for their teams or best instincts for which team will come out on top.
But is sports betting good for sports overall? David Bockino, associate professor of sport management at Elon, says no.
I think its going to lead to a breakdown of the traditional fandom, Bockino told FOX8s Bob Buckley.
Insights from Bockino and fellow faculty member Bill Squadron, assistant professor of sport management, were featured in Buckleys recent reporting onthe expansion of legal sports betting into North Carolina.
For the leagues, is it going to increase ratings and engagement and all these buzzwords they love to talk about, Bocking said. For sports as a cultural and societal entity, is it good for us as Americans to be gambling on sports?I think the answer is no. I think its more fun to root for a team for the teams sake.
Bockino has detailed how the evolution of betting on sports as well as other factors have impacted sports in a new book, Game On:How Sports Media Grew Up, Sold Out and Got Personal With Billions of Fans.
Squadron equates the history of sports betting with that of Prohibition in the United States. When the internet became a factor, it exploded and was global and was offshore and international Suddenly, there was no way to manage it and the prohibition model kicked in, Squadron said.
However, the granular ways in which fans can now wager on athletic competitions could impact the perception of fairness. Fixing the outcome of a competition could be more challenging than the performance of an individual player or a single statistic during a competition.
It leads to potential for manipulation in ways that simply the outcome of a game is much harder to fix or at least to create that suspicion, Squadron said.
Watch the entire segment of The Buckley Report to learn more.
Before entering academia, Bockino worked at ESPN for seven years in both the Research and Analytics and International Ad Sales departments, collaborating closely with ESPN offices in Mexico, South America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Along with Game On, Bockino is the author of The Guidebook Experiment and the Kindle Single Greetings from Myanmar. He has published research inNewspaper Research Journal, Asian Journal of Communication, andJournalism & Mass Communication Educatorand presented research papers at AEJMC, ICA and others. His teaching, writing and research interests include the media business, sports, history and travel.
Squadron earned his law degree from the University of California at Berkeley and was previously a partner at Morrison & Foerster specializing in cable, broadcast and wireless regulation. He served as the New York City Commissioner of Telecommunications under Mayor David Dinkins, and as President of the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors, representing all municipalities in the discussions over the Cable Act of 1992.
Squadron was previously senior vice president for strategic planning at News Corp. and was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for NYC in the Media category in 2001. He served as head of new media for IMG North America, from 2003 to 2006. He was president of Bloomberg Sports, the leader in sports data and analytics services, which was sold to Vista Equity Partners in 2015.
