Online sports betting in NY an immediate success, says DraftKings head from Poughkeepsie – Poughkeepsie Journal

DraftKings CEO identifies future of sports gambling
SportsPulse: DraftKings founder and CEO Jason Robins stopped by the USA TODAY Sports studios to talk about the future of gambling.
USA TODAY
Five decades ago, Johnny Avello's dream of a career in the gambling industry prompted him to leave the Hudson Valley and relocate to Las Vegas.
At that time,he couldnt have imagined a day when his home state would be so open to betting let alone allowingit to be accessible on a handheld device.
Never, said the Poughkeepsie native, who was inducted last year into the Sports Betting Hall of Fame. New Yorkers have always been savvy about sports betting, but there had always been a stigma around it. I always thought Las Vegas would have the grip on sports wagering.
But that figurative palm no longer is clasped. In recent years, it's been opened and extending its reach.
New York on Jan. 8 became the 18th state to legalize online sports betting. The New York State Gaming Commission approvedfour mobile app-based sports books to take wagers from what figures to be a major national market.
People who watch television regularly have already been inundated with Caesars Sportsbook commercials.
Its hugely popular; I can tell by the numbers we did over the first weekend, said Avello, a longtime Vegas oddsmaker who now is the head of sportsbook operations for DraftKings, one of the apps approved for use in New York. We opened up with the two NFL games that Saturday and New York was one of the top states for handle.

The following day, a game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Las VegasRaiders, a regular-season finale in which the last playoff berth was determined, was one of the top five betting games overall this year, Avello said in advance of this past weekend's playoff games.
He attributed much of the spike to an influx of wagers coming from New Yorkers who long had wanted to make bets from the comfort of their home, and others who mightve simply been drawn to the novelty.
This years NFL playoff (gambling) numbers are probably going to break records, Avello said. And I think every year to follow, well surpass that, because it continues to grow.
DraftKings, along with Caesars, FanDuel and Rush Street Interactive, were the first online sports betting services allowed to operate in New York, but Avello is certain there soon will be more.
To that, he said, Competition is a good thing.
Four casinos were constructed in 2013 in upstate New York, and a 2018 Supreme Court ruling permitted sports betting at those locations, lifting a longstanding federal statute that relegated sports betting primarily to Nevada.
Since New Jersey opened to online wagering in 2018, there had been suggestions if not a clamoring for its neighboring state to follow suit. The state gaming commission approved regulations for sports betting last June, which got the ball rolling.
Had New Jersey not pushed hard to get it then, Avello said, New York might still not have it.
The state gaming commission announced nineconditionally licensed Mobile Sports Wagering Operators in November. The remaining five are working toward satisfying the statutory and regulatory requirements necessary to launch. Theyll be approved on a rolling basis when requirements are met, the commission said earlier this month.
There are some restrictions here, one of which is bettors being barred from placing wagers on in-state college teams. It might be tempting for a New York resident to make some bets involving the Syracuse University mens basketball team during the NCAA tournament, for example, but that wont be permitted.Similar rules apply to New Jersey.
There is a financial benefit for the state in giving this go-ahead, of course. The sports books will have 51% of their gross revenue taxed in New York, which will be the highest rate in the U.S. Some projections figure that within a few years, New York could generate more than a billion dollars annually in gambling revenue.
I think some of the states may have wanted to do this for a long time, but theres been a perception that gambling is shady, or it taints sports, Avello said.
Sports and gambling have quietly been intertwined for more than a century, and its no longer taboo. Several professional teams have inked sponsorship deals with online betting companies in recent years, including the NFL's New York Giants partnering with DraftKings.
Its great entertainment for people, Avello said, and I think within the next five years, almost all of the states will be on board.
Avello, 69, always had an interest in gambling, influenced early by watching his parents make bets on horse races at Saratoga Springs. The Poughkeepsie High School graduate moved to Las Vegas in 1976 to become a craps dealer, first taking a job that paid $12 a day.
He eventually transitioned into odds-making and was renowned, becoming a longtime sportsbook manager at Ballys and later the director of race and sportsbook at the Wynn, one of the premier luxury hotels and casinos in Las Vegas. He worked there until October 2018 and had been planning to retire before Matt Kalish, one of the founders of DraftKings, recruited him to join their company, which soon would take off.
Now, after 46 years out west, he is among the people helping to bring a sampling of the Vegas experience to New Yorkers. Well, to their smartphones, more specifically.
Im very happy about this and its exciting, Avello said. With a digital application, there wasnt an opportunity for a ribbon cutting or a celebration when the first bet was placed, but there was definitely a celebration in our minds.

The whole experience proved rather Pavlovian.
In the nearly four years since the Supreme Court overturned PASPA and paved the way for legalized sports betting, we atSportTechieand others in the media have repeated talking points from leagues and sportsbooks about its benefits: increased fan engagement, additional viewership and so on.
When Major League Baseball announced its first partnership with MGM Resorts a while back, one high-ranking league official told me, We dont care if fans are betting a quarter. Even low stakes wagers, the research showed, had positive engagement results.
New York finally introduced mobile sports betting earlier this month soto personally gauge its impactI spent last week living the life of a casual bettor. My wagers were modest and, just like everyone said would happen, I watched a lot more sports than I had been, a conditioned response as innate as dogs salivating at the sound of the dinner bell. Woof.
I placed 17 bets during this trial, winning only six of them, but taking advantage of new user promotions at FanDuel and Caesars helped soften the blow, so my overall losses were minimal (Hey boss, I can expense it, right?Obviously,I would have shared any potential winnings. . . ).
One might think that sportswriters, whose livelihoods are contingent on sporting analysis, might be good bettors. But thats often not the case given the vagaries of one-game sample sizes and all kinds of psychological bias that we allow to creep into our thought process. A little knowledge is indeed a dangerous thing.
Also, in the interest of full transparency, I lost to my 10-year-old nephew in our family NFL picks poolthis fall. I finished behind his 7-year-old brother, too.
One friend, much more seasoned in betting than I am, gave me a few tips about strategy. But this same guy also added,
My childhood team, the Celtics, made me a little dough, but Nick Saban's Crimson Tide not so much.
All of this is to say Im not exactly surrounded by betting sharps.
The user experience of these mobile sports betting apps is straightforwardbut not for the faint of heart. There was no obvious tutorial or explainer. My only related participatory experience has been season-long fantasy leagues and office pools for March Madness and Super Bowl squares. But Ive been around sports long enough to know the basic parlance and methodology. (I still googled a few terms just to be sure.)
With a little background knowledge, though, navigating the sites ispretty easy. Making winning picks is not. But we all knew that already.Everyones still trying, of course. The four active sportsbooks in New Yorkreceived $150 million inwagersduring the first weekend, with 650,000 unique accounts. Notably, only 9.3% of NY bettors had previously wagered in New Jersey, according to PlayNY.com, suggesting there wasnt much cannibalization and maybe there werent that many people takingNJ Transit to Secaucusordriving through the Lincoln Tunnelor biking tothe middle of the George Washington Bridgejust to bet.
To keep it interesting and geta broadenedexperience, I placed wagers spanning a cross-section of sports and bet types. And the results were predictable: I lost a bit,and I tuned in to watch more live sports, just as Ive done previously when my 5 vs 12 bracket upset pick reached the second half in March and my fantasy starting pitcher took the mound in the summer.
About the only part I didnt foresee wassome minor difficultyat withdrawingall ofmy available balance, as I didnt read all the fine print about how the new user bonuses worked. So,Ill still be betting a bit more here and there. The sportsbooks will welcome my continued business.

*Parlay: Alabama +2.5 spread & Over 52.5 points (+280) :$10 to win $28 - LOSS
*Georgia first quarter money line (-130): $5 to win $8.85 - LOSS
*Indiana Pacers (+9) to cover spread at Boston Celtics (-114): $10 to win $8.77 - WIN
The college football national championship seemed like an obvious place to start, although the results show that I had no idea what would happen.
The Pacers-Celtics game may seem like an odd addition to the bet slip, but this will help explain it: I grew up in Massachusetts and have grown discouraged by the Celtics play this season. There was no way theyd win by nine, even at home. But I did sweat a bit when theCstook an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter, at which point I fired up NBA League Pass and watched them squander it way before eventually prevailing by three in overtime.
I felt Alabama's pain in the national title game, only in a different way.

BETS
*Boston Bruins (-1.5 goals) vs Montreal Canadians (-122): $10 to win $8.20 - WIN
*Virginia basketball (+1) vs Virginia Tech (-115): $20 to win $17.39 - WIN
Late in the first period, the Bruins Brad Marchand netted two goals within 15 seconds, prompting triumphant texts to my brother and father. He finished with a hat trick as the Bruins won easily. This was probably the first hockey I had watched in months, now that I had skin in the game, which of course is music to sports executives ears.
Even though my alma mater, Virginia, had been inconsistent of late, I couldnt believe the Hoos were home underdogs to theirarchrivals. The 9 pm tipoff did this father of young children no favors, but there I was, up after 11, holding my breath as U.Va. clung to a two-point lead as Techs Hunter Cattoor and Storm Murphy each had a good three-pointlooksin the closing seconds. Both missed. I exhaled, then checked my FanDuel account balance and smiled.

*Boston Bruins (-1.5) vs Philadelphia Flyers (-102): $10 to win $9.80 - LOSS
*Parlay: Milwaukee Bucks to beat the Golden State Warriors and Giannis Antetokounmpo double-double (+144): $10 to win $14.40 - WIN
I went back to the well once too often with the Bruinswho only won by one and thus didnt coverbut rallied when the Bucks destroyed the Warriors. My only fear was that they led by so much that Antetokounmpo would rest and not complete hisdouble-double. Instead, he played enough for atriple-double. This was also the night I caught myself sneaking glances at my phone in between my sons bedtime stories.
A double-double from Giannis would have been enough, but his triple-double, plus a Bucks win, helped make one of my better nights.

*Manchester City vs Chelsea to draw (+290): $10 to win $29 - LOSS
*New England Patriotsmoneylinebet to beat Buffalo Bills (+172 on FanDuel): $20 to win $34.40 - LOSS
*New England Patriotsmoneylinebet to beat Buffalo Bills (+190 on Caesars): $30 to win $57 - LOSS
*Patriots and Raiders to both win (+800): $10 to win $80 - LOSS
The morning Premier League match was ginger-on-ginger crime. Though Man City was playing at home, it had dealt with a recent COVID-19 outbreak, so I figured Chelsea had enough firepower for the tie. The match was scoreless until the 70th minute when Kevin De Bruyne scored, dashing my hopes. Alexi Lalas wouldnt have done that to our people, Kevin.
The Saturday night NFL game was a classic example of betting with ones heart over ones head. Sure, the Pats had won in Buffalo during the season, but that was an exceptional circumstance. It was so windy that Mac Jones only threw three passes. The trend lines over the final few weeks of the seasonincluding a Bills win in New Englandsuggested Ishouldnt putany scratch down on the Pats. But I did. At least it was such an emphatic blowout that I didnt waste much time watching.
Sunday, Jan. 16.
BETS
*Parlay: Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Ben Roethlisberger each to throw over 1.5 passing TDs (+425): $10 to win $42.50 - WIN
This was by far my longest shot bet to hit, but it didnt feel like much of a stretch. Brady and Mahomes both averaged more than two passing TDs per game, and the presumption was that Roethlisberger would be chucking the ball early and often while playing from behind. This win didnt quite offset my Saturday bloodbath, but I sure felt better.
I was high on the Arizona Cardinals, too high, especially after Kyler Murray's gift pick six from the end zone.
Monday, Jan. 17
BETS
*Arizona Cardinalsmoneyline(+144 on FanDuel): $10 to win $14.40 - LOSS
*Arizona Cardinalsmoneyline(+170 on Caesars): $20 to win $34 - LOSS
*Sony Michel under 58.5 yards (-110): $10 to win $9.09 - WIN
*Kyler Murray over 299.5 passing yards and over 49.5 rushing yards (+750): $10 to win $75 - LOSS
I had already placed my wagers on the Cardinals even before my, ahem, friend so confidently predicted theyd win. I thought Murray was in for a big night. At least shorting Michel worked, albeit barely, as he ran for 58 yards, meaning a more generous ball spot at some point during the night would have tipped him over the threshold.Betting apparently is a game of inches.

Posted: at 11:33 am
Indiana sports betting capped off a year of significant growthwith a big December.
Hoosiers wagered $463.0 million during December, according to an Indiana Gaming Commission report released last week. That is just shy of the record $463.7 million wagered in November 2021.
The December bets bring the total Indiana sports betting handle in 2021 to $3.8 billion, which is a 116.4% increase from $1.8 billion in 2020. The December 2021 handle total was a 47.9% uptick from $313.1 million inDecember 2020.
Indiana sportsbooks generated just more than $26 million in revenue, a 5.6% hold. The total was down 45.5% from Novembers record $47.7 million in revenue, a 10.3% hold. It is nearly on par with the $27.7 million sportsbooks generated off $461.1 million in October 2021, a 6% hold.
The state collected $2.5 million off Indiana sports betting revenue in December.
In total for 2021, sportsbooks generated $307.6 million in revenue, up 125.5% compared to the $136.4 million in the year prior. The state collected $29.0 million in taxes during 2021, up from $13.2 million in 2020.
Indiana sports bettors bet $422.8 million online, or 91.3% of the total handle in December.
Of the $40.2 million wagered at retail sportsbooks, Hollywood Lawrenceburgpulled in $13.9 million in bets to remain one of the top retail sportsbooks in US sports betting.
DraftKings Sportsbook controlled 35% of the online market in Indiana, drawing $148.2 million in bets. FanDuel Sportsbooktook in 28.5% of the market with $120.5 million in bets and led the revenue column generating $7.5 million.
BetMGM and Caesars remained neck-and-neck for third place. BetMGM took $49.9 million in bets, while Caesars handled $48.9 million.
Hoosiers let their basketball love show through in December, betting $148.5 million on the sport. That is nearly 32.1% of the overall handle.
Even with the Indianapolis Colts in the hunt for a playoff spot, NFL betting could not keep football handle in the top spot. Football accounted for $141.8 million in bets during the month or 30.6% of the total handle.
Parlays made up 25.3% of the December handle, or $117.3 million.

Which Louisiana Parishes Will Not Allow Sports Betting? – The Action Network

Sports betting in Louisiana was officially legalized in June 2021.
But before Gov. John Bel Edwards signed Senate Bill 247, Pelican State voters in 64 parishes were tasked with voting to approve it in their parish.
After the votes were tallied on Nov. 3, 2020, 56 out of 64 parishes (counties) voted to allow sports wagering.
With the passing of SB 247, Louisiana was the first state to leave sports betting approval up to each parish, allowing people to have more of a say about what would be allowed in their respective communities.
The parishes that did not approve legal sports betting were:
Bettors will only be allowed to wager from approved parishes, which includes those around Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Shreveport and most other population centers. Bettors in the parishes that did not legalize sports betting will be able to create accounts, deposit, withdraw and browse the market, but they will have to travel to a parish that approved sports betting to place bets.
An exact date for the launch of legal online sports betting in Louisiana has not been announced, but there is an expectation among officials in the state that bettors will be able to start placing online wagers before Super Bowl LVI in February.

Overtime Rules in Sports Betting: Which Bet Types Does OT Count For? – The Action Network
Posted: at 11:33 am
A common phrase littered throughout the rules at most sportsbooks:
All bets include overtime unless otherwise stated.
Popular bets like full game point spreads, totals, moneylines and player props all include overtime. It can be a blessing or a curse, depending on what you bet.
There are plenty of bets that do not include overtime, but they should be labeled clearly, like excludes OT or 60 minutes only.
Anything else you can assume includes all scoring in overtime.
Lets dive into a few specific scenarios.
A three-way line means that there are three options Team A wins, Team B wins, or it ends in a tie.
Three-way lines are popular in sports like soccer and hockey that are low scoring and often end in ties.
In these markets, overtime does not count toward your bet because the bets will be settled after regulation. If you bet the Bruins at +110 in the game below and it goes to OT, you lose because going to OT was an option to bet in this market.
In soccer tournaments, where overtime actually needs to be played, youll lose a bet on the three-way line if it gets there because the first 90 minutes ended in a draw.
That doesnt mean overtime wont count in all hockey or soccer bets. Its only the three-way line, or anything else labeled as 60 minutes only or 90 minutes only.
A hockey player prop will count overtime shots on goal, for example.
Second half bets at most sportsbooks will count overtime.
Say you bet the Raptors -2 in the second half, and they lose that half by one point but the game goes to overtime. Then Toronto wins by five points in OT youd win the bet because
PointsBet says in its house rules that overtime does not count for second half bets in football, but it does in basketball. So check your sportsbooks rules.
If you bet a team to cover the fourth quarter, that bet will not count overtime. It ends at the conclusion of the fourth quarter.

All 5 New York Sports Betting Promos for the NFL Wild Card Weekend – The Action Network
Posted: at 11:33 am
What a time in New York! Not only are the NFL Playoffs here with the home state Buffalo Bills looking like a contender, but legal online sports betting is also finally available. It launched last Saturday, so today makes it the week anniversary, and bettors can celebrate with an awesome Wild Card Weekend.
After watching neighboring New Jersey legally bet on the NFL Playoffs for years, its time for New Yorkers to get in on the party. There will be nine sportsbooks this year, four of which Caesars, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetRivers have officially launched and are offering welcome promos. BetMGMis set to launch on Monday, and PointsBet, WynnBET, Bally Bet, and Resorts World should come soon as well.
To make things as easy as possible, weve compiled every promo code, welcome offer, and bonus you can take advantage of this weekend. Well also keep this post updated as more pop up. Just click the links below and take advantage of the free money today.
Caesars is a giant in the gambling world, and if youve ever been to Las Vegas out west then youve likely run into their huge casino right on the strip. Following the overturn of PASPA in 2018, they decided to take things country-wide and launch in other markets. Theyre now live with online betting and iGaming in 10-plus states, including New York as of last week.
If youre wondering which offer is the best in the New York market, well its not really a competition: Its this new user promo from Caesars. Theyre giving $300 simply for signing up; in fact, you dont even have to make a deposit to get those funds right away. You can get more value if you want, too: If you do decide to deposit, theyll match your first one up to $3,000. Thats just an absurd amount of money to use on the NFL Playoffs.
While the other three books are more well-known nationally, dont forget about BetRivers, a very solid option in the New York market. Theyre also live in 10-plus states in the country at this point, and theyre a great option to add if you want to shop odds and always find the best line for a game.
They dont offer promotions like this one very often, so make sure to sign up today. Heres how it works: Sign up, deposit, and place a bet on the Buffalo Bills today. Theyre currently favorites, but at BetRivers you can get them at dogs, and big ones at that! You can double your money if they win. Also note that you can get this offer in combination with their sign-up offer, which is a deposit match up to $250 on your first deposit.
FanDuel Sportsbook is the biggest sportsbook in the country right now, and its for very good reason: They are consistently ahead of the competition with their app and product and offer a ton of cool, different ways to bet. They were the first to launch same-game parlays, which have become a major hit in the betting world thanks to the fun, lottery-style payouts.
If youre looking to sign up today, theyre giving out a nice promo on this weekends NFL Playoffs slate: Just sign up, deposit, and bet $5 on any game this weekend. If the team you bet on wins, youll get $150 deposited in your account. Thats 30/1 odds, which is pretty good considering you can even take a huge favorite like the Kansas City Chiefs.
DraftKings is a huge name in the gambling space, and theyve been at it for a long time at this point. They originally launched as a daily fantasy sports (DFS) company a decade ago, and when online betting launched in 2018, they quickly decided to get into the sports betting and online casino game. Theyre now live in 10-plus states, including New York as of last Saturday.
They have a few offers to take advantage of this weekend for the NFL Playoffs. We encourage you to do both, but make sure you do them in the right order: Take that first Wild Card special offer first, which is available for only new users. Youll get 56/1 odds on any team this weekend, which is a crazy value. After that, you can still get the Bills over special, in which the over/under goes down the more people bet on it. It should be an automatic win soon enough.
As mentioned above, more sportsbooks are coming in New York. Given the importance of odds and line shopping, plus the generous promotions being given out by these books, its wise to add as many as you can.
BetMGM will be next in the game, launching early next week. PointsBet is also looking at a very near launch, with the other three coming sometime in 2022.
