In November, the South Carolina gubernatorial election is on the ballot. So too might be legalizing South Carolina sports betting by proxy.

Current Republican Governor Henry McMaster took the seat in January of 2017 after the resignation of Nikki Haley, and began a full term of his own at the start of 2018. In his re-election campaign, McMaster will be running against former South Carolina congressman and Democratic nominee Joe Cunningham.

Stalled in committee during South Carolinas 2022 legislative session was a mobile sports betting bill that was primarily sponsored by Republican State Representative Bill Herbkersman.

However, South Carolinas two-year legislative session closed June 15. Many government officials throughout the state of South Carolina saw their fears that the mobile sports betting bill had lost momentum realized.

Despite the passage of sports betting legislation in other conservative states, the majority of political figures throughout South Carolina felt the bill would never be signed into law by Governor McMaster.

Many fear Joe Cunningham is the last hope for a future of legalized sports betting throughout the Palmetto state. Cunningham has made it his mission to run a campaign that fully supports legal sports betting statewide.

In various interviews, Cunningham maintained that it is time to give South Carolinians the same freedom people in the majority of other states now enjoy by finally legalizing sports betting.

This is about freedom, this is about liberty. Cunningham said back in February. This is about not allowing politicians to tell people you cant put $20 down on the Super Bowl when people are already doing it. We might as well generate a little bit of tax revenue to fix the problems that have been piling up.

The Democratic gubernatorial nominee stressed the importance of generating new revenue for the state, further asserting that legalizing sports betting will enable the state to fix economic issues by creating good-paying jobs, and could potentially generate $40 million annually through new tax revenue.

If Cunningham is indeed elected to South Carolinas highest political office, his plan would be to enable citizens to have the ability to place bets on games from their mobile devices, in addition to at various retail locations.

Illegal sports betting is rampant throughout the state, where it is currently unregulated and generating zero tax revenue. Many think that If McMaster is re-elected as Governor, it will likely be at least another four years until residents of South Carolina are able to potentially place legal wagers on sports.

Despite the positive impact that Cunningham may have on the future of legalized sports betting throughout the state, a constitutional amendment still may be necessary for the approval of sports betting to occur throughout the state.

James Harden has to prove it to me next year, or Im not giving him an extension either, said Barkley. Because I dont know if hes injured or hes cooked. Its either A or B. Im not going to give you $200million for an older dude who cant play.

June 30 marks one year since college athletes have been able to cash in on their names, images, and likenesses (NIL).

Barkley hates NIL because he believes its going to breed resentment and jealousy among teammates who are comparing who makes the most money.

The NCAA has nobody to blame but themselves because theyve been boneheads forever, he said. These little schools, they aint got no chance going forward. Theyre not going to be able to pay what these big schools are going to pay.

I want these kids to be taken care of. I dont think this wild, wild west format that theyve got going on now is good and healthy for the sport.

Its led every state in dollars bet since launching online sports betting, but even New Yorkis beginning to fall victim to the annual summer slowdown.

The$248.2 million bet from June 6 to June 12 marksits third new weekly low in a row, according to data released Friday by the New York State Gaming Commission. New York, which launched online betting Jan. 8, hasnt surpassed $400 million in a week since March though most states have yet to hit that in a month.

The drop-off is in line with what states like New Jersey, Nevada and Pennsylvania have grown accustomed to this time of year, when the sports calendar is barren. They each reported their lowest bet totals (handle) last year from June to August.

With the NBA now over and the NHL over in a couple of weeks, you can bet on New Yorks first drop-off to continue, though having two of the best teams in baseball should help a little.

Dollars should start pouring in again when football season starts in September.

The good news for New York? It is still raking in the tax dollars.

Despite the drop-off in betting, operators made good revenue this past week, thanks to New Yorkers losing most of bets they did make.

That translates to roughly $11 million in tax revenue for the state, which is about $3 million more than New York made during its second-highest week of bets back in February, when operators were still offering $3,000 first-deposit matches.

Theyve backed off on those amid New Yorks 51% tax rate, which some say has become untenable. Still, the battle for market share in the most populous legal betting state continues.

FanDuel led all operators in bets for the week, as it has since day one.

From June 6 to June 12, New Yorkers bet $109 million on the FanDuel Sportsbook app. Thats about 44% of all dollars wagered in the state, and a significant increase from the already large38% share of the market FanDuels held since January.

Its now the only New York operator to surpass $3 billion in bets.

DraftKings followed with 26% of the weeks handle, which is in line with its market share historically in the state.

Caesars and BetMGM were the only other New York sportsbooks to even sniff those numbers.

An early point from an expert mentioned a key difference between live sports betting and pre-game betting that recreational bettors often miss.

The major misconception with in-game betting is that its the same as your pre-game bet, just bet at a later time, and thats not really the case, said Capt. Jack Andrews, a co-founder of Unabated.

Andrews shared the example of a football team opening a game as a 7-point favorite. Lets say the opposing team receives the opening kickoff and drives for a field goal. If the line dips to -4, still favoring the team that opened -7, recreational bettors may rejoice at the discounted price for what they deem the superior team.

I can immediately think of a few friends who follow that (incorrect) line of reasoning during the NFL season. Ive even been guilty of thinking that way myself.

Those are two totally different bets based on the information we know about the game state and the score, Andrews said.

A better understanding of how time elapsed impacts a spread is a good starting point as you venture toward becoming an improved in-game bettor. Thinking ahead, and not being a prisoner of the moment, is also an important skill when live betting.

When Im live betting, theres only one thing Im worried about, and thats where the market is going to move after this bet, Teddy Sevransky said in a WagerTalkTV discussion. What Im trying to do is get the best of the number, for whatever team Im on, by trying to assess what the next live line is going to be for that game.

And its the same thing with people that are favorite players. Dont always play the favorites. You got to read between the lines. I think reading the market is so important. Andrews advised focusing on one game at a time when live betting, as its tough to track multiple events closely. While watching one NFL broadcast, Andrews recalled, he noticed an injury to Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger before the status of Big Ben was addressed on the TV broadcast. Andrews quickly bet on Pittsburghs opponent.

I saw Ben Roethlisberger throw a pass and then grab at his elbow as they went to commercial break. They came back from commercial break and they showed Ben on the sidelines going into the blue tent, and everywhere the line started to drop, Andrews said.

Considering several factors when placing bets is much easier pre-game, with hours or even days to review data and expert analysis. When it comes to live betting, the lines change often, leaving minimal time to react.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey talked about future SEC football scheduling after spring meetings wrapped up in Florida.

INDIANAPOLIS The SEC has seen the rise in more gambling across different sports over the last five years.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankeywhen asked about the new reality gambling brings to college athletics,said Olympic sports like volleyball, soccer,softball and even gymnastics are not immune from having bets placed.

"It was football and men's basketball and women's basketball in the postseason and baseball in the postseason if you go back five years," Sankey said during a Q&A session at the Associated Press Sports Editors summer conference on the campus of IUPUI."Now it's all those sports all season long, incredible volume and it's volleyball, and its soccer and its softball. I haven't heard the gymnastics report for us yet but those are very different realities and dynamics that are emerging around us."

Within the SEC 11 state footprint, four states (Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Tennessee) allow sports betting along with more than half of the states in the country.

Sankey said the SEC uses a monitoring service, US Integrity, to keep track the data and any issues that could arise from sports gambling.

"We need to learn what's happening," Sankey said. "We actually have a relationship with a monitoring service so every week we find out what's happening in our conference and what's happening nationally, we have an understanding of what's happening from volume and if there's anyaudits. If there's information that pops in gambling circles we learn pretty quickly."

Sankey said the SEC and the rest of college athletics did not see or plan for the new culture surrounding sports betting while discussing the impact on coaches and athletes.

"In a time when our young people are continually seeking more mental health support as a society if we are not open and attentive to the reality being creating from sports gambling then we are abdicatingour responsibility," Sankey said. "This is a significant factor in their lives that has been introduced. ... It affects our coaches as well, plenty of pressure there at our level, they accept that but this is a changing dynamic that we have not at all been attentive, too."

Grosvenor Casinos will invest more than 3.5 million (USD 4.2 M) to expand its Merchant City Glasgow gambling venue in Scotland. Rank Group's casino brand plans to addnew table games, a new bar and restaurant, seating 70 covers, and viewing areas to watch live sport. The revamp is due to launch with a series of official events from June 30, with the official launch event taking place on July 2.

Construction is underway to revamp the gaming offer at the casino with upgraded tables and electronic roulette terminals. As for the new premium viewing area to watch live sport, it will feature wall screens where customers can watch and bet live under one roof.

Grosvenor, the largest UK casino operator with 52 branches nationwide, said it selected Merchant City as its flagship proof-of-concept venue, as the firm looks to modernise its appeal and create an entertainment-for-all-offer, which breaks down perceptions of the traditional casino experience. The operator also said this venue is one of the groups best-performing venues outside London.

In addition, this upgrade is expected to create 13 jobs includinga gaming host, three trainee dealers, a head chef, and three commis chefs.The Glasgow casino'sgeneral manager Debbie Johnston stated: Were excited to be creating a world-class entertainment venue which will offer guests an experience like no other, with a real focus on gaming, dining and sports viewing, all in a vibrant atmosphere. Glasgows hospitality sector was hard hit during the pandemic, but Grosvenor Casinos major investment in Merchant City shows there is real confidence in the citys recovery.

The casino last year revealed that it was running a four-week gaming academy, including training on blackjack, poker and roulette, with the offer of full-time employment if participants qualified, as reported by The Scotsman. It also said the academy would focus on educating team members about the importance of ensuring all guests always play responsibly.

Grosvenors other casinos in Scotland include Aberdeen, Dundee, and Maybury in Edinburgh as well as a Glasgow Riverboat site. London-listed The Rank Group also owns Mecca, the largest bingo operator by venues in the UK, as well as several online gambling brands.

In April, Rank lowered its trading expectations by roughly 15%, estimating earnings of around 47 million ($60.5 million) to 55 million ($70.8 million) for the year. The decision to slash estimates comes after it posted lower-than-expected financial results for the first quarter of 2022. Against that pre-pandemic comparative period, Grosvenor venues posted net gaming revenue down by 14% to 69.1 million ($88.9 million) and Mecca venues delivered NGR down by 25% to 34.1 million ($43.9 million). Both UK venue businesses were affected by a softness in visits at the end of the quarter, consistent with a rise in new Covid-19 cases across the UK.

The performance of our venues softened in March, John OReilly, CEO of Rank, said in April, admitting the trend has continued into the first few weeks of the current quarter, impacting the companys current expectations for its full-year performance.
