New York Sports Betting Breaks Tax Record, Again – The Action Network

New York sports betting is back to steamrolling records with its first full season of football underway.
Online sports betting generated $73 million in taxes to New York in September, according to the New York Gaming Commission. Thats the most generated by any U.S. state ever, by $15 million.
New York also held the previous record, which came in its first month of online betting back in January.
New Yorkers bet $1.26 billion online during September, a 30% jump from August. Its their sixth-highest month in nine months of action, but with sportsbooks dialing down free play promotions as of late, it may be the most organically bet yet.
January still holds the record for New Yorks, and any other sates, most bet month of all time. But since then companies like Caesars have gone from giving away $3,000 to new customers to $1,250 in site credit back if you lose a bet.
New Yorks led all other states in handle every month since it went online, but its never had a full football season, traditionally themost lucrative time of the year for sportsbooks.
September was the states first month over $1 billion in handle since June.
FanDuel and DraftKings were responsible for nearly 75% of all bets.
FanDuel led all operators in revenue as its done since launch, with $500 million worth of bets, followed by DraftKings with $422 million and Caesars with $163 million.
New York has generated nearly $12 billion in handle and $400 million in taxes in just nine months of online sports betting already nearly double its initial projections for one year.
With a full football season, it could surpass $1 billion in taxes in just its first year of online sports betting.

Report: KGO Will Flip To Sports Betting Format As ‘The Spread.’ – insideradio.com
Posted: at 3:10 pm
Based on song choices and teasers airing on KGO San Francisco (810), Cumulus Media is setting the stage for a flip to a sports gambling format at the once legendary station. KGO, which ruled Bay Area radio for decades, ditched its long-running news/talk format on Thursday. Online publication The Desk says KGOs new moniker will be The Spread 810AM and the new format will carry a mix of locally produced and syndicated sports betting and sports talk shows such as Bet MGM Tonight and Bet QL Daily.
KGO is currently airing a loop of snippets of songs about money and betting. Among them: Lady Gaga, Poker Face; Pet Shop Boys, Opportunities (Lets Make Lots Of Money); Hot Chocolate, Every 1s A Winner: Santana, Winning, Kenny Rogers, The Gambler; AC/DC Money Talks; and Pink Floyd, Money.
The biggest gamble in Bay Area radio history says one promo. Others say, Our new handle is coming, Its a safe bet, Book it, and Some serious action is coming Monday.
If rumors become reality, KGO will become the second sports betting launch for Cumulus in as many months. In Providence, the company flipped talk WPRV to 790 The Score in early August, utilizing programming from the BetQL Network and CBS Sports Radio, along with a local two-hour program with Kevin McNamara, from talk sister station WPRO (630).
Californians will vote on whether to legalize online gambling on Nov. 8. Proposition 27, which is funded by sports betting giants DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM, would open the door to legal online sports betting for the states 40 million residents. The Spread would give the Bay Area its first radio outlet to cater to the markets sports bettors.
End Of An Era
With its 50,000-watt signal and the care and feeding of manager Mickey Luckoff, KGO (810) used to be where the action was on the Bay Area dial. The station was consistently perched atop the ratings for nearly 30 years.
But that historic streak was over by 2010. By then KCBS had added an FM signal, more listeners were leaving the AM dial and audience measurement had changed from diaries that favored legacy stations to the more exacting PPM. That was also the year of the high-profile exit of Luckoff after 35 years as general manager.
KGO was still a five-share station in 2010 but its ratings, stature and billings were slowly disintegrating. It posted a 1.7 share (6+) in Nielsens September survey released Tuesday, up from 1.5 in August and 1.2 in July.
Today we say goodbye to the legendary KGO, a message posted Thursday to the stations website said. Over the last 80 years, KGO has been here for Bay area listeners covering and discussing all the news that has impacted our world and local communities. We thank you for your loyalty and for trusting KGO to be your source for information. We also want to sincerely thank all the talented men and women that worked so hard over the years to produce award-winning programming on KGO. On Monday, 810 am begins a new era. We hope you will tune in.

Win It Big: The Basics of Sports Betting – TalkBasket.net
Posted: at 3:10 pm
Did you know that the Tour de France is the most watched sporting event with 3.5 billion viewers?
Sporting events make up the majority of TV broadcasts because people around the world enjoy cheering for their favorite athletes and teams.
If you want to add even more excitement to watching sports, try betting on sports! Before you get started, youll want to learn the basics of sports betting.
Keep reading to learn everything you need to know.
We cant talk about the basics of sports betting without getting into favorites vs. underdogs. Oddsmakers release betting lines on a game and decide which team is the favorite and which is the underdog.
The favorite team is most likely to win the game. They will have a minus sign next to their odds line and the underdog will have a plus sign.
Using the NFL as an example, heres what the odds could look like:
In this scenario, the Eagles are the favorite to win and the Lions are the underdog. Betting the Eagles moneyline is the safer bet, but youd win more money betting on the Lions if they were to pull out the win.
Moneylines are the easiest way to bet on the favorite or underdog. A moneyline requires the bettor to pick the winner of the game.
American odds are used to calculate the payout amount. They are centered around winning $100. For example, if you are betting on a -200 favorite, youll have to risk $200 to win $100.
Here is another NFL moneyline example:
The Colts are favored so if you bet $37.50, you win $10. Since the Texans are the underdogs, a $10 bet wins $30.
Moneylines are available for all sports and are one of the most common betting options.
You can bet on a favorite or underdog through spreads. The point spread refers to a bet on the margin of victory.
Spreads are common in higher-scoring sports like football and basketball. In soccer, youd bet on goals instead of points. In baseball, the spread refers to runs instead of points.
Lets start with a football example:
The Chiefs are a -4.5 favorite over the Chargers. This means that anyone betting on the Chiefs needs them to win by five or more points.
If you bet on the Chargers, they cant lose by more than five points. If they win the game, you also win the point spread bet.
Now, lets look at a baseball example:
Since baseball is a low-scoring sport, the point spreads are going to be lower. If you are betting on the Yankees, they need to win by two or more runs.
If you bet on the Red Sox, they cant lose by more than two runs, or they need to win the game. In this example, the Yankees are the favorite to win.
Oddsmakers set a total number of points scored in a game by both teams combined. This is generally referred to as over/unders, but might be called the total.
Bettors will wager whether or not the games total points will go over or under the total. This is different from guessing the exact score, but this bet is available in most sportsbooks as well.
Here is an example of how a football over/under bet would look in the TOTAL section of a sportsbook:
Lets say this is the odds line for the New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns. Both teams must score 41 points combined for the over to win. For the under to hit, the teams cant score more than 40 points combined.
You can bet over/unders on more than just point totals. These are some examples of over/unders you might see on sportsbooks:
If you want to bet over/unders on college football, visit this website for odds: https://www.oddstrader.com/ncaa-college-football/.
With some bets, besides moneylines, youll see two numbers. For example, you could see a spread bet of -4.5 and the odds below it. The same goes for over/unders.
The spread refers to the margin of victory that the team needs to win by. For over/unders, the totals are the amounts a team needs to reach combined.
The odds, for example, -110, is the price you need to pay to make that bet. Most NFL spreads are usually -110 on both sides, but this is not always the case.
Using the example from above, well go over what it means when the odds arent the same:
The lower number is the tougher bet to win. If you bet the Chargers spread, youll need to spend $11.40 to win $10. If you bet the Chiefs spread, youll only need to spend $10.60 to win $10.
If the odds are the same, -110 on both spreads, youll spend the same amount to win a certain amount no matter the spread you choose.
Moneylines, spreads, and over/unders are the basics of sports betting, but props are also important to learn about. These special bets are fun to place but harder to win in most cases.
Serious bettors leave prop bets alone because there arent a lot of statistics that go into the winnings.
Prop bets are wagers on specific aspects of a game that dont have an impact on the final outcome. Here are some examples of prop bets you might come across:
A lot of prop bets are yes or no questions. These examples are small selections as there are multiple kinds of prop bets that different betting sites offer.
Futures/outrights are wagers on the winner of a competition, tournament, or league. You can make futures bets right now on the 2023 Super Bowl winner since the start of the NFL regular season just began.
Other examples include:
These are typically long-shot bets because they are made so far in advance.
Parlays involve making more than one selection. Instead of betting on a single wager, you can combine these wagers. Doing so makes the odds higher and can generate a bigger payout if you win.
For example, you can combine moneylines from different NFL games. You can also combine wagers from different sports and different bet types.
Wagers like this are hard to win because you have to get every selection correct. If a single selection is wrong, you lose the entire bet.
Some sportsbooks and websites allow you to round-robin parlays. This means you can still win money if one or more selection loses depending on the wager you make.
Doing this costs more initial money and comes with a lower return than a regular parlay.
Once you find a sportsbook that you like, sign up, put money in your account, and find the bet you want to place. Most sportsbooks make this process simple.
Find your desired game and bet type through the available tabs. Click on the bet you want to make and it will populate in your bet slip. You can click on multiple bets if you want to create a parlay.
From there, enter the bet amount, and submit your bet.
Lines and odds vary depending on the sportsbook or website you use. If you have access to more than one sportsbook, you can shop around for the best line.
Although odds dont usually vary drastically, getting an extra half-point can add up over time.
Sports lovers and investors who just want to make some extra money can enjoy sports betting.
Understanding the basics of sports betting will help you make the right wagers and decisions.
Moneylines, spreads, and over/unders are the most popular types of bets. However, props, futures, and parlays can help you accumulate big money if you make the correct prediction. Find your preferred sportsbook to start winning it big! For more informative articles like this, check out the other posts on our blog.

Craig Carton gets the heebie-jeebies from sports betting ads on WFAN – Awful Announcing
Posted: at 3:10 pm
Craig Carton is a gambling addict hosting a show on a sports radio station that takes full advantage of the countrys sports betting boom.
Carton doesnt hide his addiction while co-hosting his WFAN afternoon show with Evan Roberts, often detailing the dangers of gambling for a person who is unable to bet responsibly. And like nearly every sports media platform in the country, WFAN willingly takes money from companies and services looking to attract the growing percentage of adults who wager on sports in some form.
Last week, a caller phoned into WFANs afternoon show and asked about the tout services being advertised on the station, and to his credit, Carton didnt shy away from criticizing what the ad promises.
Im vehemently and passionately opposed to those commercials being on the radio station, Carton said. I dont like listening to them because I question them from jump street about the promises and pledges they make in them. But again, it is not my decision to make. I host a radio show here. I dont dictate, nor should I, how the company makes their money.
In recent years, WFAN has been a place where you can expect to hear commercials for daily fantasy sports or sportsbooks making claims such as better odds. While Carton preaches the dangers of all forms of gambling for those who cant do it responsibly, this rant referred specifically to services selling their NFL picks. WFANs afternoon show does give their own football picks every Friday afternoon. Carton, however, doesnt take part, and those who do are not selling them, nor are they even promoting themselves as having any virtuosity on the topic over the average listener.
Im a compulsive gambler, Carton continued. When I hear the commercials youre referencing, it makes me have the heebie-jeebies because its everything in my opinion that we try to warn people about.
This is the second time in recent months a prominent WFAN host took issue with a commercial aired by the station. Earlier this year, Gregg Giannotti and Boomer Esiason both criticized WFAN for taking blood money when they advertised the LIV Golf event being held at Trump Bedminster.
Despite having a cast of critics, Carton continues to be open about his addiction and the crimes he committed to earn a year of jail time. Carton hosts a Saturday morning show on WFAN, Hello My Name is Craig, which focuses on compulsive gambling, and last year, he partnered with FanDuel to be a responsible gaming advocate. As of May, an estimated $125 billion has been wagered on sports through legal gambling outlets in the four years since the US Supreme Court opened the door for every state to offer it.
