First year of mobile sports betting in Maryland generates revenue … – Baltimore Sun
Posted: November 30, 2023 at 8:36 pm
Once sequestered to the desert of Las Vegas, whispered about over pay phones, and deemed to be a threat to the integrity of football by the NFLs commissioner, the practice of betting on sports has escaped ostracism and emerged as a ballyhooed favorite of sports leagues and fanatics.
For decades, only racetracks and Las Vegas allowed sports gambling in the U.S. Pro leagues were so wary that they refused to even place a team in Sin City, lest athletes get caught up in the unseemly habit. In a 2012 court filing, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell formally opposed the spread of sports betting.
But a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision opened the door to widespread sports wagering. And as a new revenue stream for casinos, leagues and states and a new source of entertainment for fans, sports betting quickly proved a coveted debutant. What was taboo became ubiquitous: 38 states have legalized it in some form. In Maryland, there are 13 retail sportsbooks and 12 mobile operators. The Ravens and Orioles both have partnerships with sportsbooks.
The sports world ... went from, Gambling is bad, we dont like this, we dont want this, to every other commercial is promoting some sportsbook, said Sean Jones, a Howard County resident who occasionally bets on sports.
It was first legalized in Maryland in 2021, with online wagering starting in November 2022. In the year since, it has entertained bettors across the state to the tune of a predicted $4 billion in bets. With 15% of sportsbooks profits going to the state, its expected to raise at least $40 million for public education in its first year.
But increased access to a popular new national pastime raises questions about addressing the potential for more people developing an addiction to betting. The growing mobile sports industry doesnt contribute to the Maryland Problem Gambling Fund. And a new player on the horizon internet gambling could broaden the pool of people whose habit becomes self-destructive by making casino games available online.

The New York Giants recently played the Washington Commanders in the worst, in terms of win-loss records, matchup of the NFLs Week 11.
But Jones likes football enough that the unappetizing matchup didnt bother him. Whatever game is aired, hes content to watch. And this year, hes been even more engaged. Hes not much of a gambler and has never walked into a sportsbook, but with the advent of mobile sports betting, he likes to place tiny bets on his phone maybe $2 each to add some drama.
A couple of bucks, just for some fun, just for a little extra bit of excitement, he said.
Sports gamblers used to have to illegally use a bookie, which is what Billy Small, of Baltimore, was used to. After a long launch process in Maryland, he was happy to begin betting legally on his smartphone.
The ease of betting on an app is an enticing new option. Last month, 96% of the sports betting handle (the total of money wagered) came from online bets, as opposed to just 4% from physical sportsbooks.
Sure, you can bet on the Orioles to win the 2024 World Series or the Ravens to win Dec. 10. But you can also put the price of a cup of coffee on an otherwise unremarkable football game that, suddenly, you have a stake in.
Kevin Green, a Virginia resident and Ravens fan, said he doesnt like betting on the Ravens (I dont want to be mad about two things if they lose), but he wagers on other NFL games.
If you do it responsibly, it gives you another layer of fun to the viewing experience, he said.
That excitement has attracted many. More than 73 million Americans were expected to bet on the NFL this season, according to a survey from the American Gaming Association.
But bettors dont have to stop there. They can also wager on whether a middling NBA player will have at least 3.5 rebounds. Or who will win an upcoming game of snooker. Or, as of earlier this year, pickleball.
Gamblers can also place parlays a bet requiring a combination of outcomes that is less likely to occur, but which yields a larger prize. Those wagers offer tempting rewards, but rarely pan out. Theyre generally moneymakers for the sportsbooks.
Those types of bets give pause to people concerned about the future of sports betting and its effects. In October a month that featured five Sundays of NFL games Maryland had its most successful sports betting month, generating $5.8 million in revenue for the state. The other side of the coin is that Marylanders lost $39 million in betting on sports during the month.
It does make it easy, Jones said of betting on ones phone. And it makes it more dangerous, I think.
Eight states have legalized 'iGaming,' which allows adults to play casino games on their phone. Maryland could be next. (Canva)
One of the greatest advantages of legalized sports wagering aside from regulating what had previously been a black market is that it raises state revenue. Before mobile wagering was legalized, the research firm Eilers & Krejcik Gaming predicted that Maryland would bring in $26 million in sports betting in 2023 and then increase from there.
Next fiscal year, Maryland will likely generate around $45 million for education, Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency Director John Martin said. In the grand scheme of the states $63 billion budget, that contribution is a drop in the bucket (less than 0.1%), but every million helps.
In addition to money for the state, sportsbooks have made hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.
However, no mobile sports wagering revenue goes to the states Problem Gambling Fund, which finances education on responsible betting and support for those facing addiction. People who seek support for gambling problems receive free treatment in Maryland via the fund.
During a General Assembly committee hearing last month, legislators discussed a potential slippery slope facing the state: Online sports betting is becoming more popular, but is not legally required to contribute to the fund. Instead, slots and table games at casinos finance support for problem gamblers. So, while more people have access to gambling and do it on their phones, the fund hasnt received extra money.
Online and mobile gambling is creating, I think, I dont know if I want to call it a burden, but its certainly stretching the resources we have currently, Mary Drexler, director of the Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling, told the Joint Audit and Evaluation Committee. Its a public health issue. Relying solely on the casino table game taxes and [slot] taxes isnt going to carry us into the future, isnt going to allow me to expand our public awareness, to expand some of the staffing needed.
In the months since mobile betting began, Maryland has seen an increase in gamblers seeking professional help, especially among young men of color, but Drexler said in an interview that its too early to know whether the additional calls are a result of online sports wagering.
Legislative analysts suggested at the hearing that the Problem Gambling Fund diversify its revenue. That would likely mean requiring contributions from mobile sports gambling, perhaps as a result of action taken in the General Assemblys 2024 session.
We want to do so much more with public awareness campaigns and keep them going through the year, Drexler said, but we dont have the funding that the sports world has that can spend millions and millions of dollars to get the message out on betting.

The success of online sports betting has prompted some states, like Maryland, to consider internet gambling, or iGaming, as its sometimes called. Eight states have legalized it.
I think the success of sports betting is sort of pushing legislators to say, Hey, look, were making some decent money with sports betting. We could be making more with iGaming, said Robert Linnehan, a sports betting regulation reporter at XLMedia and Sports Betting Dime.
State senators in Maryland proposed a 2023 bill to legalize iGaming, although it did not pass. Also, the state gambling agency retained a consultant, The Innovation Group, to study the topic for a report published this month.
While opponents of iGaming point to its dangerous accessibility someone could, while sitting on their couch, quickly lose thousands of dollars on cellphone roulette proponents note it could be another strong public revenue stream.
The consultant predicted in its report that, if legalized in the coming years, iGaming could amount to $900 million in gross revenue by 2029. Depending on how much of that casino win the state would tax, it could generate as little as a few million dollars annually or as much as $300 million, the consultant found. The profit margins for iGaming for states and casinos are better than for sports betting, so the addition of iGaming could be lucrative.
However, legislators on the legislatures Joint Audit and Evaluation Committee expressed caution at last months hearing.
I think we really need to slow down and take a good look at this, said Del. Steve Johnson, a Harford County Democrat.
Feedback provided by Marylands problem gambling center in the report to the state gambling agency detailed that most studies have found online gambling to result in more issues than in-casino wagering. The report stated the convenience factor of online gambling cannot be overlooked as a reliable predictor of problem gambling.
Sen. Clarence Lam cited that factor as a potential hazard. He co-chairs the committee, represents parts of Howard and Anne Arundel counties, and is a doctor.
If you were to open up more internet gaming, the equivalent of slot machines on your phone, at home, he said, it will probably lead to more Marylanders experiencing problem gambling, as well as a reduction in revenue at our casinos.
Legalization of iGaming could be a topic for the General Assembly in the session that begins Jan. 10. If legislators consider it, theyll have to weigh potential dangers against potential revenues, as online sports wagering marches into its second year.
Ive lost more than Ive won, for sure, said Green, the Ravens fan. But I still find it to be fun.

Betano Becomes Official Sports Betting Sponsor of UEFA EURO 2024 – Covers
Posted: at 8:36 pm
The Kaizen Gaming brand was FIFAs very first betting sponsor back in 2022, partnering for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Last Updated: Nov 30, 2023 1:29 PM ET Read Time: 4 min
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced Betano as their EURO 2024 sponsor. UEFA EURO 2024 will take place in 10 German host cities from June 14 to July 14.
Kaizen Gaming, a leading global game technology company and parent company of the Betano brand, will serve as the exclusive betting partner of the European Championship.
Guy-Laurent Epstein, UEFA Marketing Director said, We are delighted to welcome Kaizen Gaming and its brand Betano as an official partner of the UEFA EURO 2024. Betano is a leading digital sports betting operator with a focus on cutting-edge technology and responsible gaming. We believe that their industry expertise and affinity to football make them a great fit for the tournament.
-Guy-Laurent Epstein, UEFA Marketing Director
Betano was FIFAs very first betting sponsor back in 2022, partnering for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Betano has also been affiliated with the Czech Republics FC Viktoria Plze, Brazils Fluminense, and Portugals FC Porto.
Kaizen Gaming continues to strengthen its ties with football, even as regulators look to restrict gambling-based advertising in the sport. For instance, starting after the 2025-26 season, the English Premier League (EPL) will no longer allow gambling sponsorships on the front of match day jerseys. The move was made to pacify UK regulators from potentially imposing stronger restrictions. Spain and Italys top club leagues already prohibit gambling ads on kits.
In the United States, where legalized sports betting is still relatively new, regulators and industry associations have focused most of their attention on restricting advertising deals between gambling companies and college sports programs.
The prevailing regulatory winds, however, havent deterred Kaizen Gaming. The Greek-based company appears committed to strengthening its ties to the sport and its fans.

Sports betting, high drama, and the eighth deadly sin – latrobebulletinnews.com
Posted: at 8:36 pm
Did you know that, before they were the Seven Deadly Sins, they were actually eight dangerous threats to monastic life? The original set of eight dangers was composed as an ancient listicle by a guy named Evagrius of Pontus, who wanted to articulate the spiritual challenges that monks face in a monastery. It wasnt just a guide for behaviors, but for a clerics thought life as well. Devotion to God sought the total elimination of these eight vices.
We know the first seven so what was the eighth vice, the one that got cut? It was called acedia, a word that the ancient Greeks used to describe indifference or uncaring. By the time of early monasticism, the word had changed its meaning to something akin to ennui, listlessness, or numbness. Evagrius characterizes acedia as the most troublesome of all vices to combat. Medieval Christians dubbed this mindset the noonday demon. Its that feeling you get after lunch where your work seems boring and meaningless, your life seems dull and unsolvable, and all you want to do is give up and take a nap.
Still with me after this detour? Lets talk about sports betting.
This column may be one of the last institutions in America that isnt sponsored by Fanduel or Draftkings. Not only has sports betting become so commonplace since its legal establishment in 2018, but its become a massive money maker, raking in hundreds of millions of dollars for the state and billions for this new generation of digital bookies. Im not as concerned about the objective morality of sports betting my biblical ancestors cast lots to figure out Gods will after all but I am interested in what the rise in sports betting says about our times.
A friend of mine made the observation that sports betting is marketed as a way of becoming more invested in the games. The appeal of sports betting is that it ratchets up the drama of sports, which are already dramatic in their own right. Wins and losses mean more when money is on the line. Even for the casual fan, the drama of knowing that many gamblers lost their shirts or made their fortunes because of the latest upset or breakout performance adds to the fun. Not only do we predict who wins games each week, but now, we pick our winners against the spread (the point differential between the winner and loser), and tease those whose bets didnt pay out on Monday mornings.
Doesnt it seem odd that we take the most dramatic and engaging social tradition of our time and declare that it isnt exciting enough? Have we become so bored with the upsets, underdogs, and fandom unity that sports gives us that we need some sort of psychological hot sauce to spice it up even more?
From this angle, the popularity and profit of sports betting seems to be a symptom of a societywide case of acedia. Humans will do anything to avoid that sense of purposelessness or boredom, which is why Evagrius declared the state of ennui to be so dangerous. So many of us are fighting off the noon-day demon with our own distractions, our own enhanced dramas, and our own quiet angers. We might also view our endless online scrolling, the acceleration of life, and political rage as a response to our societal acedia, to say nothing of streaming, binging, or virtual reality. Commenting on the matter, the English cleric Charles Caleb Colton articulated that the noonday demon has made more gamblers than avarice, more drunkards than thirst, and perhaps as many suicides as despair. Colton himself had firsthand experience, winning and losing a lifetime fortune in gambling.
Somewhere, behind the artificial distractions of gambling, addiction, scrolling, trolling, raging, and binging, is a deep dissatisfaction. Anyone who wants to live a good, free, and fulfilling life will need to push the distractions aside and dive headfirst into that void. Im confident that what we find there will be the first step to a longer journey of healing and wholeness.
How confident? Im more confident of this than the Steelers and Cardinals hitting the over this Sunday, a 1p.m. game that will help stave off my noonday demons.

Iowa’s casino and sports betting drops – The Gazette
Posted: at 8:36 pm
Bettors wager on sporting events Aug. 15, 2019, inside the sportsbook at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Council Bluffs. Gamblers no longer are required to go in-person to an Iowa casino to place sports bets, and can instead set up online accounts with approved sportsbooks. (Joe Shearer, Council Bluffs Nonpareil)
DES MOINES Gamblers bet more than $4 billion at Iowa-licensed casinos and sportsbooks in fiscal 2023, and even that average of nearly $11 million a day in wagers represented a decline for both in-person casino and online sports betting.
Iowas sports betting revenue dropped in the fiscal year that ended in June for the first time since the Iowa Legislature legalized it in 2019.
And it was a significant drop: There was $2.247 billion in sports bets made in the 2023 state budget year, down from $2.455 billion in the same period the previous year an 8.5 percent decline, according to state figures.
And for just the second time in the past decade but excluding the worst pandemic year casino gambling revenue in Iowa also dropped from the previous year.
According to figures from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Association, which oversees the gambling industry in the state, gambling revenue at the 19 state-licensed casinos was more than $1.754 billion in fiscal 2023. Thats down slightly 0.7 percent from the $1.766 billion recorded in the previous budget year.
The Council Bluffs market, which includes three casinos, combined accounted for a year-over-year decline roughly equivalent to the statewide difference.
We saw temporary facilities open in Nebraska, and the facility in Lincoln likely has had an impact on the Council Bluffs market, said Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission Administrator Brian Ohorilko.
Admissions to Iowas casinos already had been declining. There were 17.1 million admissions to the licensed casinos in 2022, down from 17.8 million in 2021, according to a state report. That continued a trend of declining attendance that started before the pandemic struck in 2020.
Beginning in 2013, casino gambling revenues in Iowa have increased annually with only two other exceptions: in 2019, when it dropped slightly just 0.5 percent from $1.463 billion to $1.457 billion, and in 2020, when the industry took a huge hit from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wes Ehrecke, president and chief executive officer of the Iowa Gaming Association, which represents the 19 licensed casinos, said the mild dip in fiscal 2023 revenue may be due in part to a right-sizing of the industry after two consecutive years of spikes after the worst of the pandemic.
Coming out of the worst of the pandemic, the $1.457 billion recorded in fiscal 2019 surged to $1.575 billion in fiscal 2021 and $1.766 billion in fiscal 2022.
When we came out of COVID, we had kind of a bump at that time. There was a lot of pent-up demand, people getting back and stuff, Ehrecke said. I think that (revenue drop in the most recent year) was really more about coming off COVID, having the bump, the pent-up demand, and then it came back maybe to more of a normal (year).
Nationally, casino gambling revenues increased in calendar years 2021 and 2022, and are on pace to increase again in 2023, according to data collected by the American Gaming Association.
Before the pandemic-related revenue swings, gambling revenue in Iowa was on a pretty steady track. From the 2014 to 2019 budget years, revenue increased 2 percent, 1.5 percent, 1.1 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively, before dipping 0.5 percent.
Year in, year out over the last several years, we dont change a lot, Ehrecke said. It doesnt fluctuate a lot. Weve got a very stable industry here.
Ehrecke said other economic pressures on Iowans may also have factored into the dip in revenue.
The discretionary dollars earmarked for entertainment maybe were not as much because of higher gas prices, and theres just things that are kind of going on during that time, he said.
Ehrecke said Iowas casinos face other potential headwinds in the coming years, including increased competition on Iowas borders including both from Nebraska and Illinois.
A group has been attempting for years to get a license for a $250 million casino in Cedar Rapids. With those casino backers on the cusp of trying for the third time to get a license, Iowa lawmakers in the final days of their 2022 session blocked the attempt by passing a two-year moratorium on any new casino licenses.
The moratorium expires in June, and the backers have said theyll try again.

California sports betting initiatives facing uncertain future as … – EGR Global
Posted: at 8:34 pm
The latest ballot initiatives aiming to legalize sports betting in California are set to advance to the signature-gathering stage following the end of a mandatory commenting period.
The Tribal Gaming Protection Act and the Sports Wagering Regulation and Tribal Gaming Protection Act were both submitted to the California Attorney Generals office as prospective ballot initiatives on October 27, and have since passed a month-long commenting period.
Both measures can now commencesignature gathering, which provisionally is due to end within four months, however the state does allow for up to six months for signature collection.
To qualify to appear on theNovember 5, 2024 general election ballot, the initiatives proponents will be required to collect 874,461 valid signatures from Californians over thefour to six monthperiod.
However, the passage of the measures to the next stage of the process comes amid scathing opposition from tribal gaming operators, the group which both measures would directly benefit through exclusivity in sports betting.
Chief amongthe groupis the California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA),which represents some of the largest and most influential tribes in the state.
Earlier this month, CNIGA representatives voted unanimously to oppose the initiatives by 18votes to zero, with the tribal gaming body angrily rebuking the petitionsauthors former poker player Kasey Thompson and cryptocurrency entrepreneur Reeve Collins.
The entire effort surrounding these initiatives was handled abhorrently by the initiative sponsors, said CNIGAchairman James Siva in a statement on November 20.
It is hard not to be offended when listening to these individuals speak. This is another example of outside influences trying to divide and conquer Indian tribes. We will not let history repeat itself, he added.
Sivas remarks refer to a similar 2022 ballot initiative by out-of-state gambling operators DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM,and Fanatics among others seeking the legalization of sports betting viaastate-wide referendum.
Proposition 27,as it was eventually known, aimed to legalize betting inCalifornia, with all proceeds going tosupporthomelessnessand social causes, and would have allowed both tribal and out-of-state operators to offer sports betting.
A rival ballot initiative,Proposition 26,backed by a coalition of some of Californias largest tribal casino operators, included sports betting-related measures allowing for in-person wagering at both tribal casinos and the states four licensed race tracks.
The two ballot initiatives battled it out for signatures in California, in whatbecamea multi-million-dollaracrimoniouslobbying campaignbetween the two competing interest groups.
However, both ballot campaigns failed to gain enough votes to pass, having been put to a statewide ballot on November 7, 2022.
Elsewhere, the California Attorney GeneralsOffice will soon deliver a potentially damaging legal opinionon whether daily fantasy sports(DFS)contests can continue in the Sunshine State.
Requested by Senator Scott Wilk in October, the Attorney Generals inquiry focuses on the issue of whether Californianlaw prevents in-state DFS players from using DFS platforms, which may be located in or outside the state.
Central to this, isthe assertion that DFS contests are games of chance and not games of skill, which would effectively make themanillegalform ofgambling in the state, rather than exempting them under theUnlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act 2006 (UEIGA), as would be afforded to fantasy contests.
The inquiry comes at a difficult time for the DFS sector, which iscurrentlyfacing increased scrutiny from regulators around the US over concerns about so-called pickem gamesthatmany regulators have suggested mimic proposition-style sports betting.
However, it is understood that the California inquiry is not confined to pickem games and focusesmore broadlyon the whole of the DFS product spectrum.

The encouraging 3Q reiterated Rivalry's optimistic projection of attaining profitability in the first half of 2024.
Last Updated: Nov 29, 2023 1:06 PM ET Read Time: 4 min
A Toronto-based esports betting, legal sports betting, and iGaming site is ready to challenge the Ontario market even more coming out of the third quarter.
On Wednesday, Rivalry Corp. reported a 50% year-over-year handle increase to $105.7 million in Q3. Combining that growth with a previously-announced $14 million capital infusion and cost-cutting measures, Rivalry has lofty goals.
We are proud to have delivered a record third quarter while exercising discipline on costs amidst a challenging capital markets environment for growth companies. Now, with our recently announced capital infusion, we will be able to go back on the offensive, while still maintaining our path to profitability.
- Steven Salz, Rivalry CEO and Co-Founder
Rivalry is geared toward Millennial and Gen Z fans of esports, a trending wagering sector of the gaming industry. The company has also grown its online casino operations, which made up half of the handle, or $50.4 million, during an unseasonably viewership in select Q3 esports events, the company stated among its highlights.
Rivalrys overall revenue jumped 22% to $8.7 million in Q3, with gross profits of $4 million, up 90% from the same quarter last year.
The company, which announced a net loss decrease of 6%, also reached all-time highs in average handle per customer, average revenue per user, and record low cost of customer acquisition in an Ontario sports betting and iGaming landscape that drew a handle of over $14 million in Q3.
The third quarter reaffirmed Rivalrys positive guidance of achieving profitability in H1 2024.
The company pointed to a new same-game parlay for esports, supporting an improved sportsbook product mix and contributing to an enhanced margin profile spurring Q3 success.
The betting handle for the nine-month period ending September 30, 2023, was $338.1 million, marking a 127% increase from the same period in 2022. Year-to-date revenue was also up 70% while gross profit rose 175%.
It is this proven operating leverage, supported by an improving sportsbook margin profile resulting in more revenue per dollar wagered, now fueled by growth capital, that is creating a significant opportunity set for Rivalry, Salz said. It is that combination which gives us confidence to reaffirm our first half 2024 profitability guidance.
