‘Rick And Morty’ Finale Finally Gives Answers On Rick’s Backstory – The Federalist
Posted: September 20, 2021 at 8:47 am
The two-episode season finale of Rick and Mortys fifth season gave the viewers much of what they had been asking for all year. While the famously picky fanbase can never fully be satisfied, episodes nine and ten closed out the season with a bang, giving us plenty of adventure, excitement, and laughs while winding up several long-running plotlines and hinting at more of the characters mysterious backstories.
Episode Nine (Forgetting Sarick Mortshall) opens with Morty hopping dimensions, cleaning up messes he and Rick made during their travels. It is a solid indication both of Mortys growing maturity and of the increased tension between him and his grandfather. Morty is sick of Ricks shenanigans and has begun to see himself as the responsible half of the party.
He does a good job as far as it goes. On returning to the workshop garage, he attempts to top off the portal fluid the way a normal teenager might top off his old mans whiskey bottles after taking a swig. It goes about as well as it usually does in real life, but the consequences are much worse: Morty accidentally opens a portal in his own hand.
That portal somehow connects to a man named Nick, who has a similar aperture in his thigh. Nick claims to be another victim of Ricks emotional abuse, and they commiserate through the portal. Meanwhile, Rick discovers Mortys use of the portal and says their association is at an end, replacing him as a sidekick with two ordinary crows. He says their relationship is obviously deeply flawed and that this is all for the best. Morty agrees and goes off to find Nick.
Nick and Mortys adventure goes bad quickly. Nicks story about having been Ricks former friend turns out to be a lie: he attempted to rob Rick, getting blasted with the portal gun in the process and locked up in a mental institution.
They fight and Morty ends it by severing his own hand and tossing it down the other end of the portal in Nicks thigh, creating a singularity that blinks his companion out of existence. It is a pretty impressive leap of logic and courage, more evidence of a more mature Morty who knows what hes about.
Ricks adventure with the crows also went bad, and he admits to Morty that choosing them as a replacement was just a bit, not a serious judgment. Nonetheless, after regrowing Mortys hand, Rick clears out of the family home and goes off with the crows.
The final episode, Rickmurai Jack, aired immediately afterward and picks up the story of Ricks continuing adventures with two crows, an anime-flavored space cowboy scene in which Rick wages endless war on behalf of crow-people and against owl-people. Morty shows up, middle-aged, pleading with Rick to come home and end his years-long exile. Rick declines, but after realizing his crows are out at night doing side-quests with his arch-nemesis (a scarecrow, naturally), he returns to the Smith family home.
But plot twist! Morty isnt really 40 and Rick hasnt really been gone for decades. He aged himself up to make his plea more effective and now needs Ricks help to return to being 14. To fix the problem, they have to go to the Citadel of Ricks, the interdimensional hub for Ricks from infinite timelines. It works.
Here the episode gets into the long-running questions about Ricks and Mortys from other universes. The Citadel has been the scene of some previous episodes, but exactly what goes on there and who is in charge is the subject of speculation among the fans. Here, we get some answers.
Since their last visit, the Mortys have taken over, led by the one Morty popularly described among fans as Evil Morty. Evil Morty invites the two to dinner and scans Ricks brain, giving him the final information needed to collapse the Central Finite Curve that holds the multiverse together.
The bit of jargon has been floating around since season one, but only now is it explained: when Rick created the Citadel, he separated the universes where he is the smartest man alive from those in which he wasnt. Any interdimensional travel in the show is between only those universes. Evil Mortys grand plan is to escape through that barrier into some universe where Rick isnt a spacefaring genius, a place where a Morty can just be a Morty and not deal with Rick stuff.
As this is unfolding, regular Morty gets access to Ricks brain scan, showing him the backstory that had only been hinted at. We knew already (or thought we knew) that our Rick (often called C-137 Rick, after his dimensional designation) witnessed the murder of his wife and child by a Rick from another dimension. We see now that he spent years scouring the universes for that killer, becoming a killer himself in the process.
The journey changes him into the Rick we know, creating the distance and logical remove, the callousness toward others lives, and all of the unpleasant qualities of the emotionally scarred protagonist. It also shows us the source of this seasons theme: Ricks unwillingness to risk losing his family. Indeed, it shows us that he did lose that family, then hopped across the dimensions to find a family that had no Rick and took his place.
Even his separation from Morty in episode nine was less out of disregard for the family than out of concern for how abusing and unpleasant their relationship had become (and, lets be honest, his fascination with his new crow companions.) Evil Morty offers Morty a chance to escape with him, but he declines, staying with Rick as the Citadel self-destructs. They escape, and the episode ends.
There have been some weird moments this season, but the final two episodes were hard to dislike. The mysteries solved and unsolved will spark conversation among fans as we wait for the next installment, the release date for which has not been announced. There were some good laughs with the crows and others, but these two episodes were pretty somber at times as Rick and Morty plumbed some emotional depths. It should leave viewers satisfied with what weve seen and curious about where Rick and Morty end up next.

The UN wants the world to pump the brakes on Artificial Intelligence – Curiocity
Posted: at 8:47 am
Quick, before we reach the singularity! This week, the UN released a report on the state of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and in a nutshell, theyre not liking what they see. The report comes from UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, and it doesnt mince words. Lets check it out!
Basically, the UN has found that both private companies and states/countries themselves are using AI technology that violates international human rights laws. Specifically, theyre worried that AI-based profiling, automated decision-making, and other machine-learning technologies can have disastrous consequences for people.
In addition to violating privacy laws, these technologies can affect a persons rights to health, education, freedom of movement, freedom of peaceful assembly and association, and freedom of expression. So yeah, not a great way to be using our newfound tech.

UN Human Rights (@UNHumanRights) September 15, 2021
Some specific examples of these issues include getting denied social security benefits due to faulty AIor even being arrested thanks to flawed facial recognition tools. Yeah, this is starting to sound more and more like a sci-fi movie, but these are legitimate problems.
Well use targeted ads as a quick example of how things can go wrong with Big Data and AI. As youre browsing around the internet, your interests and activity are tracked and accumulated by social media companies, advertisers, and whoever else has the cash to access it. Boom, two weeks later, and that thing you thought you needed (or maybe even didnt) is right there, waiting for you to buy it.
Now, thats not really a problem in and of itself, but were going to continue the analogy. Lets say you were browsing the internet looking for gifts for friends, researching a school project, or whatever else. Well then, the AI cant distinguish your intent from your behaviour it takes it at face value. All of a sudden, your friend sees you scrolling through Instagram and their birthday present is the first sponsored ad.
Shopping is one thing, but political actions, personal health decisions, and other deeply important behaviour go down online as well. And as long as AI operates indiscriminately and without oversight, the risks for mistakes with grave consequences continue to grow.
The UN has seen this, and theyre (justifiably) freaked out about it. While we cant see the worlds leading countries or international corporations taking their advice any time soon, were happy theyve said something about it. If youd like to check out the report for yourself, just click here.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SentinelOne (NYSE: S), an autonomous cybersecurity platform company, today announced its participation as a launch collaborator for Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) Anywhere. Amazon EKS Anywhere is a new deployment option for Amazon EKS that enables easy creation and operation of Kubernetes clusters on-premises, including on virtual machines (VMs) and bare metal servers. The SentinelOne Singularity Cloud extends security and visibility to assets running in public clouds, private clouds, and data centers via a single console, delivering a fully managed security solution for containerized environments.
Amazon EKS Anywhere brings unprecedented flexibility and agility for Kubernetes workloads by offering true hybrid cloud container orchestration, said Guy Gertner, Vice President of Product Management, SentinelOne. The SentinelOne Singularity Platform delivers protection and EDR to Kubernetes and containerized workloads, wherever they are deployed whether on premises or on AWS.
While Kubernetes is popular in the DevOps community, if improperly secured, it presents an attractive target for adversaries. According to IDC1, 98% of companies have experienced a cloud data breach in the last 18 months, with Kubernetes becoming an increasingly popular attack vector for threat actors interested in data theft, cryptomining, and denial of service attacks. SentinelOne mitigates this risk by delivering a cloud security solution with the same level of management and automation as Amazon EKS Anywhere delivers for Kubernetes.
Flexibility and choice are paramount to why we selected AWS. Using SentinelOne to secure AWS, we can prevent incidents in seconds, stopping attacks in their tracks before they can progress, said Jason Spencer, Vice President of Global IT at R.R. Donnelley.
"Containers are one of the fastest growing ways for companies to deploy and manage applications. Customers run their containers on AWS because of its secure, reliable infrastructure and wide breadth of performant services for containers including Amazon EKS, Amazon ECS, and Amazon Fargate," said Bob Wise, General Manager for Kubernetes at AWS. "Regardless of the service used, security is our top priority at AWS. As AWS grows services like EKS and ECS Anywhere, AWS Outposts, and AWS Wavelength, our customers are using AWS to run containerized applications across the cloud, data centers, and at the edge. We're excited by this collaboration with SentinelOne to provide our customers with an additional layer of consistent workload protection across container services and environments."
Singularity Cloud is a single console for multi-cloud management. It enables security teams to manage both Linux and Windows servers in Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Docker or Kubernetes containers from the same console in which they secure enterprise attack surfaces. SentinelOne agents deliver AI-driven runtime protection, detection, and response at machine speed across an entire hybrid cloud estate, from Docker containers to self-managed and managed Kubernetes services like Amazon EKS, Amazon EKS Anywhere, Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS), and Amazon ECS Anywhere.
The SentinelOne agent is DevOps-friendly auto-deployed as a single, resource-efficient Kubernetes agent that protects the Kubernetes worker, its pods, and containers without impacting performance or introducing complexity.

Electrifying the Future: Toyota Puts Over $13 Billion Into Battery Technology – Singularity Hub
Posted: at 4:33 pm
The worlds largest car manufacturer by volume has been sluggish in its efforts to electrify compared to competitors. But Toyota has just announced a huge investment in battery technology that may be a sign its shifting course.
Although Toyotas Prius hybrid was the first electrified vehicle to really hit the mainstream, the company failed to capitalize on its early lead. It still doesnt sell a fully electric vehicle in either the US or Japan, at a time when more or less every major automakerfrom Volvo to Volkswagenhas at least one model powered by batteries alone.
The company seems to be belatedly joining the party after executives announced that it would invest $13.6 billion in battery technology over the next decade. This includes $9 billion to be spent on manufacturing, which will see it scale up to 10 battery production lines by 2025 and ultimately up to around 70.
During a press briefing, chief technology officer Masahiko Maeda said part of the companys plan is to reduce the cost of batteries by 30 percent or more through innovations in materials and new designs. They are also working on ways to reduce the amount of energy the car draws from those batteries by 30 percent.
All of this follows from the companys April announcement that it plans to release 70 electric cars around the world by 2025, suggesting that its finally joining the consensus among automakers that electric vehicles are the future.
But as noted by Green Car Reports, only 15 of those 70 cars will be fully electric, with the rest made up of hybrids or hydrogen vehicles, which the company has also been pushing for a number of years. In contrast, many competitors have announced plans to go fully electric in the coming decade.
Toyotas reluctance to double down on electric vehicles is all the more confusing considering it is seen as a global leader in developing batteries for electric vehicles. Its also a frontrunner in the quest to commercialize solid-state batteries, which could significantly increase energy density and therefore the range of electric vehicles.
The explanation seems to lie in the fact that, despite being an early leader in electric cars, Toyota considered electrification a stopgap until cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells could replace gasoline ones. While the company does sell one hydrogen-powered car, their expense and lack of fueling infrastructure means adoption is lagging.
Given that the reason for replacing gasoline vehicles is climate change, the fact that hydrogen still has a long way to go until its truly green suggests that a future for decarbonizing transport using fuel cells is still a distant dream.
Perhaps surprisingly for a company that led the initial charge to create a greener future for the car, Toyota has even been lobbying against the transition to electric vehicles, according to the New York Times.
While this is probably at least partly an effort to protect its investments in non-battery-focused transport technologies, the companys argument is that a transition to electric vehicles as rapid as many are suggesting is not practical given the current state of the technology.
Last year, Toyota president Akio Toyoda claimed Japan would run out of electricity if it switched entirely to electric vehicles, unless it spent hundreds of billions of dollars on upgrading its power network. More recently, company director Shigeki Terashi said it was still too early to put all of our eggs in the electric vehicle basket.
So while this new battery investment will certainly be a major boon to efforts to electrify vehicles, it seems Toyota is still not fully on board with the electric vehicle revolution.

In an Accidental Discovery, Physicists Find that Black Holes Exert Pressure on their Environment | The Weather Channel – Articles from The Weather…
Posted: at 4:33 pm
Representational Image
Physicists have, for the first time, discovered that black holes exert pressure on their environment.
In 1974 Stephen Hawking made the seminal discovery that black holes emit thermal radiation. Before that, black holes were believed to be inert, the final stages of a dying heavy star.
Scientists at the University of Sussex have shown that black holes are, in fact, even more complex thermodynamic systems, with not only a temperature but also a pressure. The discovery is published in the journal Physical Review D.
The team, led by Professor Xavier Calmet and Folkert Kuipers in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the varsity, was perplexed by an extra figure appearing in equations that they were running on quantum gravitational corrections to the entropy of a black hole. They later realised that it was behaving as a pressure.
They confirmed their exciting finding that quantum gravity could lead to pressure in black holes following further calculations.
According to Calmet, Professor of Physics at the varsity, Hawking's landmark intuition that black holes are not black but have a radiation spectrum similar to that of a black body makes black holes an ideal laboratory to investigate the interplay between quantum mechanics, gravity, and thermodynamics.
"If you consider black holes within only general relativity, one can show that they have a singularity in their centres where the laws of physics as we know them must break down. It is hoped that when quantum field theory is incorporated into general relativity, we might be able to find a new description of black holes.
"Our work is a step in this direction, and although the pressure exerted by the black hole that we were studying is tiny, the fact that it is present opens up multiple new possibilities, spanning the study of astrophysics, particle physics and quantum physics," Calmet said.

This is a guest blogpost by Jason Kingdon, chairman and CEO, Blue Prism
Link all computers together why would you do that?
Way back in the 1980s various academic and scientific institutions started linking their computers together into a single global network. Its underlying mission was supporting continued communication in the event of nuclear war. Helping to pass files and bits of data, it introduced a new form of electronic communication called e mail. Email was fast amazing in some ways, compared to letters and the then version of the phone.
The early 1990s saw commercial networks join this linking and the phenomenon of the Internet took hold. The World Wide Web making the Internet more accessible lit the way and the story we all know took hold.
How profound the changes introduced were not understood; and can be argued are still not. It took until the mid-1990s for the dotcom phenomenon to emerge and, despite the casualties of the burst, almost all the innovations seen as excessive at the time are now commonplace (pet food and home delivery were two front-line casualties in the early 2000s recriminations).
Commentators argue now over the pace of innovation and change brought about by this network: the pace of productivity and accessibility it has produced. Without disturbing these arguments, it is easy to see social medias impact, the global lock-down management, the accessibility of education, entertainment, hyper-communication, the technification of society, and the profound changes to economics, politics and life. Those that remember all agree everything has changed.
Link software applications together it worked for computers
The low expectations of the impact of linking computers together has a parallel right now in application software. The robotic process automation (RPA) movement champions software, designed to mimic humans. As such it can re-purpose human interfaces as machine interfaces and, by design, can make use of all machine interfaces. So what?
Where to start
The whole history of computing has been a quest to address the interoperability issue and the ability to manage and understand process resources. At a technical level it is hard to overstate why this innovation offers a supercharging of productivity, and again, changes everything. No longer is it possible to say systems are incompatible all systems now are; even if they were never designed to be. You may not be interested in the revolution but the revolution is interested in you.
Machines now have a universal middleware, and this middleware through AI reaches into human services too. The first casualties here are the investments and efforts to impose a single design authority, which is now obsolete. It is as if overnight the whole software landscape has become SOA compliant. SOA or Service Oriented Architectures was a deep techie program to cure the interoperability and re-use issue. It was a way that techies would agree to write their software so other software could use it. The effort was something akin to asking all journalists to format in English and tag their work in the same way; or asking all musicians to write and record all music in the key of C Major. In other words, all historic efforts to solve this interoperability question required epic, idealistic and fantastical compromises from all participants.
The new order created by RPA, however, takes things as they are and is totally inclusive past, present and future. A potential for singularity, if you will.
Universal middleware and hyper-containerisation
The technical arguments dont stop here; the new order that this universal middleware implies is that containerisation becomes democratised. This means all services can be wrapped and re-purposed for both machine and human consumption.
What is containerisation? It is the wrapping of a service to a common standard, it means you create a codified (computer and human readable) interface to the underlying capability. It is like an API to a Maths or AI algorithm at one end, a mainframe flight booking system at another; and then again at a new extreme, an API to something like Amazon, or even the Internet.
What does this mean?
Firstly, it goes way beyond APIs (application programming interfaces) simple codifications that are used by software to get modules chatting. The process of RPA wrapping means whole services can be machine controlled.
A good example of this already occurs the price comparison sites have become automated service switching businesses. A robot can now keep your house utility bills optimised against the full range of 3rd party services offered; a new banking service could pixelate (digitise) the services from existing providers to offer a single pain of glass to a user mixing and matching best products. Imagine mixing best international transfer services with stockbroking, house banking and mortgages, and so on.
The lack of barriers between applications means all of these recombinations become in scope new levels of creativity are unleashed, very akin to the power of the Internet.
It also changes the way internal services are carried out within corporations: like mortgages, underwriting, HR, finance. The new regime allows the abstraction of these services from process outcomes from the underlying methods of their execution; this means hyper-scalability core services becoming new core competences that can be rented and marketed at a whole new scale. The mortgage services company, or the trade finance service company, or the physical asset finance management company; the banking compliance company etc.
Like the ye olde days of the internet; creative destruction is being invited at all levels. It is as if the digital equivalent of the Iron Curtain has come down freedom of movement is now abounding.
Digital freedom of movement
One of the profoundest implications of this new world is on the future: if all digital services are consumable by all others then the old tricks of walled gardens and lock in incompatibilities built in to the design to ensure that consumers are trapped become obsolete. This has the effect of linking R&D efforts in a veritible liquid form. It means at one level we are all collaborating now.
AI can already read at modest levels unstructured human writings. But technical documents like written software and user interfaces and are easy pickings: robots can tirelessly rewrite these documents into modern accessible and liquid forms (APIs). More robots can tirelessly re-compose these outputs into further accessible mash-ups and composites. A singularity if you will. Would that be enough to change the world?

Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation Has A Core Worlds DLC – GameSpace.com
Posted: at 9:22 am
Ashes of the Singularity, the massive real-time strategy game from Stardock Entertainment just got a new Core Worlds DLC.
Available now and ready to expand your empire on PC, the latest addition to Ashes of the Singularity Escalation is a brand new DLC and version update. The newest maps might come in at just a few dollars but they add new warzones based on real-world geographic designs and distribute resources to offset the geographical disadvantages across each battlefield. All 5 of the new designs come with objectives for 2 6 players, with a balance of resources and tactical advantage that are built to challenge a commander to manage units so that they are not simply bottlenecked or steamrolled into submission. The extra add ins that come with the new DLC include:
The new map isnt all that players loading up Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation can expect. Anybody who has been away from the battlefield for a while will notice some improvements as part of the v3.1 update. Landing alongside the Core Worlds DLC, the new v3.1 update should seriously reduce load times and improves combat balance and visuals, meaning more on-screen mayhem for your money.
This update makes significant improvements in performance, said Stardock CEO Brad Wardell. We increased the number of CPU cores that can simultaneously interact with the GPU from 8 to 16 which should translate to smoother performance when thousands of units are on screen.
Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation is the newest upgraded iteration of the iconic RTS Ashes of Singularity, where a post-human coalition battles against the overwhelming power of an AI substrate bent on wiping out everything that stands against it. If youre gearing up for another shot at victory then Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation is available on Steam or Stardock for $29.99, while the new Core Worlds DLC will set you back $2.99 / 2.09 or local equivalent.
