Paradise found: incredible and rare encounters to enjoy in the Seychelles – The National
Posted: October 20, 2019 at 10:16 pm
The noise is deafening. As the propellers spin and the pilots ready the plane for take-off, I lament my decision not to bring noise-cancelling headphones on this trip. The drone from the tiny 16-seater plane grows louder as we begin to move along the runway. A few seconds later, we are soaring high above Seychelless lush mountainscapes.
Whether the noise dissipates or whether I am simply too enthralled by the scene below to notice anymore, Im not quite sure, but a few minutes into the short flight to Praslin Island, I am completely engrossed in the grandeur below. As the plane soars over glassy waters, I watch the surface break every so often over the swell of an emerald-tinged island. The sun glints off the rippling shallows and waves crash against yellow bays, turning white as snow before rushing up coastlines and disappearing again beneath palm-fringed perimeters.
In the distance is the second largest island in the Seychelles archipelago. Flying over a cluster of thatched roofs, the pilots expertly navigate through the peaks and angles of Praslins tree-strewn landscape and we land a few moments later.
We head to Constance Lemuria, the spot we will call home for the next few days. Set on 101 hectares of land, the five-star resort has nature at its heart. Home to idyllic beaches, including one of the most picturesque in the country, Anse Georgette, it is a little slice of natural paradise.
I set out to explore and, wandering among the mammoth granite rocks strewn across the resort, its difficult not to feel as though Im on the set of a Jurassic Park movie. Im not surprised when I find out that a few million years ago, prehistoric creatures were thought to inhabit this area. Today, it is home to some of those dinosaurs descendants.
Aldabra giant tortoises are endemic to the Seychelles and, at Constance Lemuria, they roam freely, stopping to nap in the shade of a palm tree or meandering ever so slowly along leaf-strewn riverbanks. The tortoises are special, Markus Ultsch-Unrath, head of health, safety and environment project manager at Constance Hotels & Resorts, says. They are only found in the Seychelles and people say they originally came from the Aldabra atoll.
Aldabra is the biodiversity jewel in the Seychelles gleaming crown. Rivalling the Galapagos Islands in ecological importance, it is not only where the giant tortoises came from, its also home to manta rays, nurse sharks, lemon sharks, spinner dolphins and dugongs, among others.
Even before the islands were populated, there were tortoises here, says Ultsch-Unrath. What this means is that no one really knows how old some of the animals are. What we do know is that there are an estimated 100,000 left in the world. On Praslin, Leonardo is the eldest, at more than 100 years old and, at the hotels sister resort, Constance Ephelia on Mahe Island, that title goes to Dusty, who was born in 1909.
As I watch the tortoises walk idly across the grass, I cant help but think that the chilled-out island life of the Seychelles seems like a good fit for these creatures. Tortoises take life very easy, Ultsch-Unrath adds.
Making my way across the resort, I arrive at a thatched eco-hut a few metres from one of the resorts beachfronts. There, Robert Matombe, resident turtle manager, tells me about the resorts other VIPs. Every season, we have a lot of sea turtles coming to our beach to nest, he says. We have hawksbill and green turtles and the nesting period runs for about five months.
During this time, its Matombes job to ensure there is no light or noise pollution at the bays. He also monitors the turtle nests and helps guide hatchlings into the ocean. Its no small job, given that every season one female hawksbill turtle lays up to 200 eggs at a time. But hes not complaining. Compared to the turtles, he has it easy.
Its tough work, he explains. After mating, the female comes ashore to dig a hole about 50 centimetres deep in the sand. She puts about 200 of the eggs in there and uses her flippers to carefully camouflage the spot.
Most of the eggs will hatch, but how many hatchlings will make it to the ocean? And then how many will make it to maturity?
Strolling through the valley is much like walking through something from a fairy tale.
Even with help from the Constance Lemuria team, only 10 turtles on average will make it to maturity, which they reach at about 30 years old. Its because theyre surrounded by enemies, says Matombe. As well as predators, theyve got human threats such as fishing nets, fishing lines, plastic pollution and matchsticks. Plastic bags are the worst because they look like jellyfish, which is a sea turtles favourite food.
Vowing to do more to eradicate plastic bags from my life, I head off to discover another fascinating facet of life on Praslin, in the islands Unesco World Heritage site, the Vallee de Mai National Park. This area is one of only two spots on the planet where the coco de mer plant grows. Known for the voluptuous shape of its seeds, which are the largest in the plant kingdom, the coco de mer is a protected species with a remarkable nut.
Amid hundreds of trees, huge fronds shield me from the tropical rain as tour guide Angela prepares to explain more about the coco de mer. As we stop where a seed has ripened, at her suggestion, I pick it up and it takes all of my strength to do so. Apparently, the seeds can weigh up to a 32 kilograms each.
Strolling through the valley is much like walking through something from a fairy tale. As the light streams through shades of green, thick trunks, huge stems and spreading fronds bluntly obstruct my view.
Angela regales me with legends about the coco de mer. She says that some people believed it grew beneath the waves of the ocean; others thought its seeds were so huge because they were formerly dispersed by dinosaurs. One man, upon seeing the shape of the nut and the nearby four connecting rivers, proclaimed that Praslin must be the Garden of Eden.
True or not, on this island kingdom where rare creatures have a home and the seeds are worthy of giants, Praslin is definitely a paradise found.

View: African islands in the Indian Ocean- Looking beyond Delhis strategic blindness – Economic Times
Posted: at 10:16 pm
By Darshana M. BaruahStrategic significanceDespite the recent high level visits to the region - Vice President Venkaiah Naidu to Comoros in October 2019, President Ram Nath Kovind visited Madagascar in March 2018- the western Indian Ocean continues to remain at the periphery of Indias strategic calculations. It is also a blindspot for the Indian Navy with limited presence and engagements despite the region marked as a primary area of interest in its 2015 maritime security strategy. Interestingly, it is not just Delhi but most of its partners - except France (traditional power) and now increasingly China (new rising power)- have overlooked the importance of this region.
The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) is a strategic sub-theatre of the Indian Ocean linking the Southeastern coast of Africa to the wider Indian Ocean and beyond. It is home to one of the key chokepoints in the Indian Ocean- the Mozambique Channel. While Comoros sits at the northern mouth of the Mozambique Channel, Madagascar borders the channel to its west. While the channel lost its significance post the opening of the Suez Canal, the recent hostilities near the Strait of Hormuz brought the channel back into focus as the original route for bigger commercial vessels (especially for oil tankers). Additionally, the growing importance of Africa in Indo-Pacific engagements combined with potential natural gas reserves in the Mozambique Channel will only continue to raise the significance of this region in wider maritime security. Keeping in mind the importance of geography for maritime power projection and naval dominance, there is little doubt about the rising significance of the islands in a new geo-political environment in the Indian Ocean. For India, engagements with this region will become critical as the Navy begins to strengthen its presence under its mission based deployments. Engagements with the region, especially with the islands- given their geo-strategic location- could become key in supporting Indian naval presence as well as furthering Delhis Indian Ocean engagement.
However, the foreign policy architects in New Delhi has failed to realise the geo-strategic importance of this region. The Indian Ocean Region (IOR) division in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) created under Modi led government in its first term is tasked with coordination of Indias engagements with the Indian Ocean islands and the region at large. However, Delhi left behind a critical sub-region- the Western Indian Ocean and the islands of Madagascar and Comoros while formulating an Indian Ocean vision. Its failure to include Madagascar and Comoros, the other two sovereign islands in the Indian Ocean reflects the lack of an actual coherent strategy for the Indian Ocean at large. Instead of perceiving the reality of Madagascar and Comoros as island nations, the MEA perceives the islands through a continental perspective with coordination through the East and South Africa division along with other continental African states. On the other hand, the neighbouring islands of Mauritius and Seychelles are part of the IOR division and are perceived as maritime neighbours. All four islands (Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar and Comoros) are members of the Indian Ocean Commission and the African Union, i.e. they belong to the same geographic location.
New power dynamics There is no doubt that the political and economic environment in Madagascar and Comoros differ from its neighbouring Indian Ocean islands. The islands of the Mozambique Channel have suffered from long drawn internal political crisis leading to serious economic issues. However, as with most nations across the Indo-Pacific, Madagascar and Comoros too are waking up to the importance of maritime security in great power politics. There is a renewed enthusiasm within Madagascars political class in rebranding its foreign policy engagements through the maritime lens. The newly elected government of President Andre Rajaolina seems to send one message out- it is time the Malagasy people turn to the ocean to solve both its economic issues as well claim its position as an island nation in a geo-strategic location. Similar sentiments exist in Comoros.
Building on its key location, the island nations are looking towards its blue economy potential and strengthening its maritime capabilities. While France has been the dominant player in the region and a traditional partner for collaborations, the islands are enthusiastically looking East, toward Asia, to help build its maritime role. Whether it be training for its officers, building ports, acquiring new assets or enhancing its capabilities to monitor its coastal waters, Madagascar and Comoros are enthusiastic in building a maritime relationship with Asian countries. The islands nations are keen to expand its partnerships beyond European nations and are particularly looking to India and China as the new rising powers in the Indian Ocean region. Along with India and China, the islands are keen to strengthen their relationship with Japan, Australia and the US. However, China appears to be the only new actor responding to the islands interests in extending collaborations through military training, infrastructure construction and financial assistance among other initiatives.
India in the Western Indian OceanAs Madagascar and Comoros look East to build its maritime capabilities, India should play an active role in building the maritime capacities of the islands. Delhi has already begun significant new initiatives with the neighbouring islands of the IOR. It must now look beyond Seychelles and extend these initiatives to Madagascar and Comoros integrating the Indian Ocean region as one theatre in its policy engagements. For example, first, India must extend its Coastal Surveillance Radar Network to these islands under its capacity building efforts as well as maritime domain awareness collaborations.
Second, as India continues to deploy its P-8i to Seychelles and neighbouring islands, it must sign a similar agreement with Madagascar and Comoros to help patrol and monitor the waters around the islands significant Exclusive Economic Zone.
Third, Delhi must consider placing a defence attache in one of the islands in the Mozambique Channel to monitor and understand security developments in the region.
Finally, Delhi must respond to the interests of the islands in having an Indian presence in the region through the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC). Despite the IOR being the Indian Navys primary area of responsibility, Delhi has no formal engagement with this regional institution whereas China holds an observer status.
Extending Delhis network of maritime initiatives to Madagascar and Comoros would only strengthen Indias own outlined priorities and interests in the region. In the Indian Ocean, Delhi must be able to understand its own advantages and significance of geography as it continues to place greater importance in the affairs of the region.

Club Med to Open First Resort in the Seychelles – RusTourismNews
Posted: at 6:44 pm
It is now confirmed that work that started well over a year ago to transform the 87 room Beachcomber St. Anne Resort into a whopping 295 room Club Med is now nearing completion.
It was in late 2017 when the announcement was made that Club Med would take over though the ownership of the property would remain with Beachcomber for an initial 12 years lease and management. The present rebuilding, enlargement and upgrading will, when completed, bring the Sainte Anne Resort & Spa into the Club Med 5 Star segment at a cost of at least 80 million US Dollars. The resort, located on the island of St. Anne, is a 15 minutes boat ride away from Mahe with shuttle services leaving from a dedicated jetty. The 220 hectares large private island is surrounded by one of Seychelles marine national parks.
The Seychelles Minister responsible for Finance, Maurice Loustau-Lalanne said recently that he was hoping to see the reopening of the Ste Anne Resort in mid-2020 during the islands settlement celebrations that in earnest started on the island of Ste Anne itself.
