Gun Rights Advocates March to Idaho Statehouse
Posted: January 15, 2014 at 12:41 am
Jeff Smith, a Boise State University graduate living in Utah, heard about Idahoans for Liberty's Second Amendment rally the evening of Jan. 12. He drove to Idaho and spent the night in his car in a WalMart parking lot in Boise, and was rubbing his German shepherd Kira's belly when Boise Weeklycaught up with him at the Grove Plaza just ahead of when the rally was scheduled to march to the statehouse.
For Smith, who brought along his loaded AR-15 assault rifle, the rally represented kickback against dependence on the government.
"We should be able to govern ourselves," Smith said.
The threats to his freedom, he said, aren't terrorists. "They're guys wearing suits and ties rather than living in caves overseas," Smith said.
In general terms, the rally was in support of Second Amendment rights and a chance for advocates to urge legislators to reinforce state support of the right to bear arms in Idaho, but the supporters who gathered at the Grove Plaza the morning of Jan. 13 had numerous reasons for attending. For some, it was to protest President Barack Obama's efforts to enact gun legislation. Others were there to remind their legislators that gun rights are important to them. Nick Brizzi, a veteran of the Vietnam War, was there because, as a veteran, he felt gun ownership was a right he'd earned in the jungles of southeast Asia.
"If a man is given the right to have a weapon to serve his country, he should have that right until he dies," Brizzi said.
Greg Pruett, the event's organizer, started Idahoans for Liberty and organized the Monday rally because national organizations like the National Rifle Association needed local corollaries to work with state legislatures and city councils.
"The people who make a difference work [at the statehouse]," he said. "I wanted an organization that was Idaho specific."
After Pruett urged the crowd to "tell [the legislators] how you feel" and thanking a motorcycle-mounted police escort, the crowd snaked its way from the Grove Plaza east on Idaho Street, then north on Capitol Boulevard to the statehouse, with people adding to the crowd's ranks along the way. What started as a group of about 50 people at the plaza had blossomed into a throng of about 200 by the time it settled at the Capitol steps.
No legislators were there to greet them (though several did join the crowd on the steps later during the rally), which dismayed many.

SECOND AMENDMENT Firearms on campus will help reduce crime
Erroneous perceptions about crime trends cloud how people feel about gun rights. Over the years, the Gallup Organization has found two-thirds of poll respondents believe crime is increasing annually.
In fact, the opposite is true. In Georgia from 2008 to 2012, violent crime has deceased by 22 percent. During that time, the General Assembly passed two major gun bills that significantly expanded the places where background-checked Georgians can carry their firearms.
While the violent crime rate is decreasing statewide, it is increasing where guns remain banned: our university campuses. Of the 11 universities that have consistently reported their crime data to the FBI, violent crime has increased by 36 percent from 2008 to 2012. The illusion of safety on Georgias campuses is harshly contradicted by the reality of the 38 forcible rapes, 46 aggravated assaults and 87 robberies that occurred on campus in 2012 alone.
Our experience here in Georgia proves that when good people are denied the right to defend themselves, violent crime increases. When more people carry more guns, in more places, more often, violent crime decreases for all of us.
MIKE MENKUS, Marietta
Guns in bars. I worry less about the mentally ill carrying guns than I do about armed drunk people. Guns on campuses. There may be a need for security, but guns would be better off in the hands of trained, licensed professionals than teenagers with access to drugs and alcohol without parental oversight.
Guns in or near government buildings. Courts hear cases where suspects are prosecuted and defended and where one side or the other is going to be angry or vengeful. Guns should not be in the hands of vigilantes with grudges. Also, there are some fringe people who blame the government for all of societys ills. Guns in churches really? Surely, there is no need if people in church are taught to love one another, not shoot one another.
Please, please stop the madness!

BOISE - State draft legislation aimed at strengthening the self-defense rights of Idaho gun owners has the backing of the National Rifle Association gun lobby, said representatives of the grassroots Idaho Second Amendment Alliance.
After a Monday morning gun rights march to the Capitol steps that attracted an estimated crowd of more than 150, Boise firearms attorney Alexandria C. Kincaid announced the NRA had given its support to the draft bill. The measure was designed to strengthen Idaho's existing "Castle Doctrine," enabling gun owners to protect themselves from criminal intruders in their homes, automobiles, and places of employment, said Idaho Second Amendment Alliance President Greg Pruett.
Kincaid addressed the Idaho Capitol building crowd as did Idaho Freedom Foundation President Wayne Hoffman.
"There are other countries ... when you say 'We have the right to keep and bear arms in America' they look at you like you're crazy," Hoffman said through a bullhorn.
Pruett confirmed that the alliance gained approval for the draft legislation last week from the Washington, D.C.-based NRA. That NRA approval followed the Jan. 6 start of the 2014 session of the Idaho Legislature, Pruett said.
"When the NRA puts their stamp on it, the (state) legislators take notice," Pruett said. "So, that's a big selling point for us."
Idaho legislative co-sponsors of the nascent bill are Rep. Brandon Hixon, R-Caldwell, and Sen. Marv Hagedorn, R-Meridian, Kincaid said.
Pruett estimated "a dozen or more," Idaho lawmakers were in attendance at the Monday morning gun rally.
Pruett said Idahoans currently have to prove that their lives, or those of their families were threatened before using deadly force against an intruder.
Only Florida and Texas have stronger Castle Doctrines that enable gun owners to defend themselves against criminal intruders, Pruett and Kincaid said.

SAFE Act opponents mark one year anniversary with "Shot Heard 'Round New York" protest

Second Amendment advocates across the state are uniting on the one year anniversary of the New York SAFE Act.
It was touted as a way to make the streets of New York Safer. However, one year since the state legislature passed New York's strictest gun laws to date, some say it is making criminals out of law abiding citizens and question if the New York SAFE Act is making a difference.
On Saturday hundreds of gun advocates across New York took a stand against the law and and sent a strong message to Albany.
It's so hard to believe it's already been a year since Governor Cuomo signed the SAFE Act right here in Rochester and what a year it has been.
There have been several protests about this throughout the state and Saturday gun owners made it very clear they will not stop fighting for their Second Amendment rights.
Opponents of the SAFE Act picked up their shotguns and gathered at multiple locations throughout the state to fire a unison shot in protest of the one-year anniversary.
It's called the Shot Heard 'Round New York. One took place at the Ontario Rod and Gun Club. More than 70 shooters fired a single shot to show they are against the legislation.
Dozens of locations took part in this protest, including more than 30 other states, showing their support for New York gun owners.
This is reminiscent of the Shot Heard 'Round the World, when during the American Revolution, British soldiers came in the middle of the night to confiscate American's firearms and ammunition.
