Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act Has Cochran, Wicker Support
Posted: at 4:41 pm
U.S. Senators Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) are backing legislation that would allow persons with state-issued conceal carry permits to use them in other states with conceal carry laws.
The Concealed Cary Reciprocity Act of 2014 (S.1908) is intended to defend the Second Amendment rights of individuals with conceal carry permits, allowing them to carry those privileges from their home state to other states that also have conceal carry laws.
Second amendment rights shouldnt stop at the state line, Cochran said. It makes sense to allow law-abiding gun owners to take their concealed permit privileges with them to states that also allow conceal carry permits.
I am strongly committed to upholding Americans constitutional right to keep and bear arms, Wicker said. This legislation would ensure this right is not limited to the state where the concealed carry permit was issued. It responsibly grants legal gun owners the same freedom in states with concealed carry laws.
While extending concealed carry privileges, the legislation recognizes states rights and does not provide for a national concealed carry permit.
Cochran and Wicker, both members of the Congressional Sportsmens Caucus, were among 57 Senators who earlier this year voted in favor of an amendment comparable to this legislation. In addition, the Mississippi Senators cosponsored similar legislation in the 112th Congress.
S.1908 was introduced by Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) and is also cosponsored by Senators Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Mike Johanns (R-Neb.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), John Thune (R-S.D.), Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and David Vitter (R-La.). The measure has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Group defends Second Amendment rights with long guns and cookies
Posted: at 5:44 am
A group of determined men, women and children got together Saturday for a family-friendly outing - a heavily-armed family outing with some of Southeast Texas' staunchest defenders of their Second Amendment rights.
The Beaumont chapter of Come and Take it Texas organized an open carry rally and walk down Dowlen Road to air their concerns following an incident at Parkdale Mall on Dec. 28, when a store owner's gun was seized and he was cited after he walked through the mall with an AR-15 strapped to his back.
Organizer Brian Smith of Liberty County estimated about 110 people showed up at the Sertino's parking lot, where the Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a microphone was set up anyone who wanted to speak.
Following the rally, the gun-toting group walked out to Crow Road, crossed Dowlen and went south to Lowe's.
There were AR-15s and AK-47s and other long guns that are legal to carry openly in Texas.
Smith, a 53-year-old retired firefighter, carried a 1914 Remington Enfield.
"It's a veteran of World War I, it's been around a while," he said. "It's 100 years old, let it see some sunshine."
Smith said the group's main objective is for Texas' open carry rights to be extended to handguns as well as long guns.
As it stands, only police officers and those breaking the law display handguns openly, and Smith said there is no reason why law-abiding Texans should not be able to carry them openly.
After the walk, they went to lunch at one of three restaurants that agreed to host them: Raising Cane's, Schlotzsky's and Chick-fil-A.

Tennessee Firearms Freedom Act Re-Emerges
Posted: January 18, 2014 at 1:41 am
NASHVILLE, TN (WKRN)--Local Second Amendment advocates are once again trying to ban federal gun laws.
The bill called the Tennessee Firearms Freedom Act stalled last year in a state senate committee, but the head of the group pushing the measure says, "It will pass if it can get to the House and floor."
John Harris, who is executive director of the Tennessee Firearms Association told WKRN,"This statute would say that state of Tennessee reserves to itself the authority to regulate guns in this state, and to the federal government you have no such authority."
Harris said other key part of the bill include making a civil rights violation if the federal government would try to enforce any gun law, and authorizing the state attorney general to take action against violators.
He indicated the bill is as much about the Tenth Amendment as it is the Second Amendment, citing "federal government encroachments" in other areas like education or health care.
"Your big debates on public policy when you look at them are really tenth amendment declarations in each of those areas saying to the federal government you have no right to tell us what to do in this state," added Harris.
