HISTORY: 15 old pictures from the Principality of Sealand – Gazette

IF you sailed a few kilometres off the coast off Harwich, you would discover a tiny territorythe size of two tennis courtswith adramatic history.

Based six nautical miles off the coast is the Royal Naval fortress known as Sealand, founded by Roy Bates, from Thorpe Bay, in 1967.

Sealand was originally known as Roughs Tower, an offshore platform in the North Sea, built in 1942to protect the port of Harwich from the Germans.

During the 1960s, Mr Bates, who died in 2012, set up Radio Essex, a pirate radio station in the Knock John forts in the Thames Estuary.

After being prosecuted under the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act, Mr Bates moved his family to the Roughs Tower fort.

The Royal Navy tried to have him removed, but a court ruled Sealand was not part of England or any other nation and he was allowed to remain.

In August 1978, Alexander Achenbach, who described himself as the Prime Minister of Sealand, hired several German and Dutch mercenaries to attack Sealand while Roy and Joan Bates and his wife were away from the platform.

They stormed Sealand with speedboats, jet skis and helicopters, and took Bates' son Michael hostage. Michael was able to retake Sealand and capture Achenbach and the mercenaries using weapons stashed on the platform. Achenbach, a German lawyer who held a Sealand passport, was charged with treason against Sealand[8] and was held unless he paid 23,000 but he was released weeks later.

In happier times, couple Gordon Wilkinson and Karen Huxtable had their wedding on Sealand, and were married by Vicar of Sealand, Reverend James Howard Chelton.

Images show the happy couple being wed on the platform before being lowered down to the sea in an inflatable to start their honeymoon.

Just last year, the self-proclaimed Princess of Sealand, Joan Bates, died aged 86.

Mrs Bates died at a nursing home in Leigh following a long illness.

She leaves behind her daughter Penny, 66, and son Michael, 63, who features in our old photos.

Speaking to the Standard last year, Mrs Batess grandson James, 29, paid tribute to her, recalling listening to amazing tales as he grew up.

He said: Grandma was lovely and full of life. She was always immaculately turned out and very glamorous.

She modelled for all sorts of companies.

Take a look through our old pictures of Sealand and share your memories below.

Posted: at 3:33 pm

Shares ofSealand Natural Resources Inc (SLNR) is moving on volatility today-46.81% or $-0.22 rom the open.TheOTCBB listed companysaw a recent bid of0.2500 on525 volume. Now letstake a look at how the fundamentals are stacking up for Sealand Natural Resources Inc (SLNR). Fundamental analysis takes into consideration market, industry and stock conditions to help determine if the shares are correctly valued. Sealand Natural Resources Inc currently has a yearly EPS of -1.40. This number is derived from the total net income divided by shares outstanding. In other words, EPS reveals how profitable a company is on a share owner basis.

Another key indicator that can help investors determine if a stock might be a quality investment is the Return on Equity or ROE. Sealand Natural Resources Inc (SLNR) currently has Return on Equity of -649.88. ROE is a ratio that measures profits generated from the investments received from shareholders. In other words, the ratio reveals how effective the firm is at turning shareholder investment into company profits. A company with high ROE typically reflects well on management and how well a company is run at a high level. A firm with a lower ROE might encourage potential investors to dig further to see why profits arent being generated from shareholder money.

Another ratio we can look at is the Return on Invested Capital or more commonly referred to as ROIC. Sealand Natural Resources Inc (SLNR) has a current ROIC of -649.88. ROIC is calculated by dividing Net Income Dividends by Total Capital Invested.

Similar to ROE, ROIC measures how effectively company management is using invested capital to generate company income. A high ROIC number typically reflects positively on company management while a low number typically reflects the opposite.

Turning to Return on Assets or ROA, Sealand Natural Resources Inc (SLNR) has a current ROA of -409.19. This is a profitability ratio that measures net income generated from total company assets during a given period. This ratio reveals how quick a company can turn its assets into profits. In other words, the ratio provides insight into the profitability of a firms assets. The ratio is calculated by dividing total net income by the average total assets. A higher ROA compared to peers in the same industry, would suggest that company management is able to effectively generate profits from their assets. Similar to the other ratios, a lower number might raise red flags about managements ability when compared to other companies in a similar sector.

Lords of Sealand Releases New Single – Motion – The Deli Magazine National (blog)

Posted: April 23, 2017 at 1:22 am

San Francisco's Lords of Sealand has announced the release of Motion, a four-movement dissection of the lives of plants and whether or not they are truly animate. Following the release of 2014's debut album Found Fiction, recorded just 3 months after the the full lineup was assembled, the band intentionally employed a more intricate and methodical group composition dynamic that is now being first unveiled on Motion.

Originally conceived as a distraction from the long production process of the upcoming full-length dream-based album Zs, Motion quickly grew into a self-contained but dense concept record in its own right. Disparate influences including, Yes, Genesis, The Mars Volta, along with the addition of synths, electronic percussion and sound design elements paint a vivid homage to the classic prog epic that feels fresh, modern and, dare we say, danceable.

"Motion, simply, is an exploration of the lives of plants, asking if plants are, in fact, animate objects. Deeper, it explores a concept that is fundamentally human: what does it mean to be living an impactful, meaningful life? It is about yin and yang. The music and lyrics together take you through the journey of a lifecycle, the ups and downs that come with living a purposeful life." -Lords of Sealand

Speed camera on Sealand Road "worth it if it saves a life" – LeaderLive

Posted: April 3, 2017 at 8:44 pm

If THE newly installed average speed camera saves one life it will be worth it, it has been claimed.

Flintshire Council has spent 130,000 on the speed calming measure which has now been installed on Sealand Road following a decade-long battle.

Cllr Christine Jones, Labour councillor for Sealand, said she was thrilled about the cameras installation at long last.

The local authority confirmed it is working in partnership with road safety organisation GoSafe to install the 130,000 enforcement system on the A548 Sealand Road near Chester.

The scheme is the first of its kind in North Wales and is expected to go live next week.

Studies carried out by the local authority identified the majority of the accidents have been shown to be speed related.

In a bid to curb the number of accidents on the stretch of road, the system will operate over a four-kilometre stretch of the A548, from the existing 40mph speed limit east of Manor Road to the county boundary with Cheshire.

The system will measure average speeds over the route and fixed penalty notices will be issued if vehicles are found to be exceeding the speed limit along the route.

Cllr Jones said: Were thrilled to bits because its been a long campaign.

It's been a long time coming and hopefully it will save lives.

Something had to be done and we needed the extra initiative.

People will have to take it now and hopefully it will slow traffic.

We've been after this for 10 years and if it saves one life, it will be worth it.

Appropriate signage will be installed at the entry points and additional repeater camera signs will be installed along the section of Sealand Road affected by the proposals.

The new camera system will monitor the average speed of vehicles along the whole route, preventing the temptation for motorists to speed up as sometimes happens after passing the usual static speed cameras.
