Diving into the history of the Marlborough Sounds reveals a much-changed seascape – Stuff.co.nz
Posted: at 9:01 pm
OPINION: Bob Marley famously once sang: If you know your history, then you would know where you coming from.
It has been 250 years since the Endeavour entered Queen Charlotte Sound/Ttaranui.
Niwa marine ecologist Dr Sean Handley and I were curious to know what the Marlborough Sounds ecosystems were like then, how the land and marine environments have changed over time, the state today, and how might these ecosystems look in another 250 years.
We recently published our findings in the international science journal Ocean and Coastal Management. It is freely available by clicking here.
Before we do the big reveal, lets travel back in time to stand on the deck of the Endeavour.
The sweet sound of melodious bird song emanates from the largely intact old-growth forests, and the coastal waters teem with fish, reflecting the health of land and sea.
Our vessel is not the only one on those azure sun-lit waters though many waka meet Captain Cook and his crew.
They show us how they fish by lowering a flax basket baited with paua, then gently lifting the unsuspecting fish out of the water. It doesnt do damage to the seabed.
BRITISH LIBRARY BOARD
Sidney Parkinson painting of Queen Charlotte Sound 1770 (c) The British Library Board, Add. 23920 f.44.
We dive overboard and open our blurry eyes to see a seabed skyline of tubeworm towers, described by renowned Niwa ecologist Dr Drew Lohrer as Marlboroughs version of coral reefs, which hosted a dazzling abundance and diversity of fish and marine invertebrates.
When we surface from this beautiful dream, we find we have emerged into the year 1825. The waters are now bloody and turbulent as we dodge the painful thrashing of a southern right whale, harpooned by an American whaling ship.
Within 10 years, the whale nursery grounds of Port Underwood and Tory Channel have become funeral sites.
It is not the first marine species to become locally extinct though, early Mori had wiped out sea lion, elephant seal, and Waitaha penguin colonies.
We dive back down to escape the carnage, only to be yanked up by an oyster dredge in 1863. These succulent species were the next to be clear-felled as exports to saloon bars in Blenheim and Nelson, and the beds were largely exhausted in Tory Channel by 1900.
Thinking things couldnt get any worse, we seek refuge amongst the underwater tubeworm towers, only to see now the ruins of what looks like a bombed out city. Fish skittishly evade the first bottom-trawls of the early 1900s, and sediment from cleared land clouds the water.
We glimpse tens of thousands of Picton Bloater pilchards streaming past us in their winter migration, pursued by false killer whales and bottlenose dolphins. Soon the bloaters largely disappear too, scoped up for canning periodically from the 1880s to the end of World War II.
We surface to find shelter in the native forest, only to see small areas now remain amongst the numerous sheep and cattle. The shallow soils on the steep hillsides slip after heavy rain, taking pasture and sediment into the sea, to add to the legacy from mining a century before.
SUPPLIED
Forestry sedimentation is a big issue in the Marlborough Sounds.
By now, it is the 1960s and we dejectedly roam around the foreshore looking for a feed of green-lipped mussels. This once abundant shellfish are now scarce as they are picked off the rocks by the sackful, to be shipped north. Dredges gobble up the last sub-tidal beds.
We fall asleep on the empty shore and are drenched woke in 2020 to a flow of mud-laden flood water. We blearily glance up at the clearfell pine blocks, like raw boils across the landscape, reflecting the ongoing absence of love for our natural environment.
Overfishing of snapper, blue cod, paua and the scars of thousands of scallop dredges have all contributed to ongoing pressure on the ecosystems of the Marlborough Sounds, as the 250th anniversary of the Endeavours arrival rolls around.
Unfortunately our time machine breaks. We are stuck here. We search for inspiration.
We take one last dive, this time into the only marine reserve at Long Island, the area of which is less than 0.01 per cent of the entire Sounds coastal marine area. This tiny haven gives us hope as we surface to ask the question: what will the next 250 years hold?
We decide we can either moan about what we see now, or we can pull our collective finger and change the story of the Sounds from this point forward. The choice is ours, as is the future past we wish to leave, as our collective generations legacy for 250 years hence.
Dr Steve Urlich lectures in environmental management at Lincoln University. The views expressed in this article are his.

Hundreds break covid rules to watch ‘illegal street race’ over the border – North Wales Live
Posted: September 18, 2020 at 1:17 am
This video shows hundreds of people gathering along a road to allegedly watch an "illegal street race."
The footage from a dashcam belonging to Tom Jones shows crowds of onlookers lining the streets as cars whizz by in the opposite direction.
It was captured last night as Mr Jones drove along Bumper's Lane in Chester near Sealand Industrial Estate which is close to the border, reports Cheshire Live.
New covid rules in England mean outdoor gatherings of more than six people are illegal.
The incident has been reported to Cheshire Police.
Tom said: "The council have spent a lot of money resurfacing this road only for it to be abused by these idiots. Not only that but an illegal gathering for covid too.
"I have heard car racing nights in the past often on late Sunday evenings and wondered where it came from. Now I know."
Cheshire Constabulary define "street racing" as illegal racing of any kind of vehicle on a public road.
The only time street racing is permitted is when the organiser has obtained prior permission from the police as part of an organised event.
Cheshire Live has approached Cheshire Constabulary for comment.

Third attempt to build 150 homes on Chester flood risk area branded ‘nonsense’ – Cheshire Live
Posted: at 1:17 am
A third application to build up to 150 homes in Chester has been lodged with Cheshire West & Chester Council.
For the third time in five years an application to build on land adjacent to Clifton Drive playing fields off Sealand Road has been submitted despite the previous two attempts being unanimously rejected.
The latest application is being submitted by the administrators of former applicant Sealand Commercial Properties Limited (SCP), with Smith & Williamson looking to try and recoup some money by making a last ditch attempt to get the green light.
The plans submitted are for 150 homes with the demolition of four properties on Sealand Road to create access.
The issue over Clifton Drive and the land for the proposed development opposite has rumbled on for a number of years, the previous applications rejected owing to the land being designated a Category Three flood area, one that comes with a very high risk.
In 2015 a bid was submitted for the site by Bloor Homes and SCP before another arrived a little over 12 months when Guernsey-based Astu, again in partnership with SCP, had their application for 280 residential units rejected.
Andy Scargill, chairman of the Friends of Countess of Chester Country Park, has campaigned on the issue in the past and believes this latest attempt to be 'total nonsense'.
"Back in 2012 the old Chester City Council had a report commissioned on the flood plain area that these plans are looking to build on and in each scenario that was modelled the area flooded," Mr Scargill told CheshireLive.
"If the embankment goes then it would be very serious and there would be a huge issue with regards to flooding.
"The administrators on this occasion are obviously trying to recoup what they can so are dipping their toe into the water with this plan again, possibly in the hope that Brexit and COVID-19 will have people distracted enough for them to get outline planning, which is all they really need for the land to be of real value.
"I don't blame them, they are clawing back cash for people who have lost a lot, but my own personal view is that it is total nonsense.
"I'm angry and amused at the same time that someone would consider such a move at such a time like we are currently experiencing.
"I've said it before now but speculators don't care about Chester, they are not from the area and care about the profit and not about what is best for the city and its residents."
Back in February 2018 planning consent was given to Bark Street Investments for 142 homes on the Clifton Drive playing fields site opposite, land which the University of Chester still own the leasehold of.
Find out what's being built in your area by entering your postcode below.
That application was initially rejected before being overturned in 2016 by the High Court, an inquiry opened by the Secretary of State who upheld the decision.
But the land still remains undeveloped.
"When Clifton Drive got planning permission I felt like throwing in the towel," said Mr Scargill.
"The Local Plan had enough housing for 25 years so there was no need for such a development to be pushed through. For a Planning Inspector to say yes to it I found staggering.
"It is land that should never be built upon."
The deadline for comments on the proposals is Friday, September 25.

The full list of North Wales schools which have reported coronavirus cases – North Wales Live
Posted: at 1:17 am
Schools across North Wales have been disrupted as a result of positive coronavirus cases.
As pupils return to classrooms this month, a number of schools have had to take action as a result of Covid-19 cases among pupils and staff.
The cases have led to large groups of pupils having to isolate, and partial closures of some sections of schools.
The Welsh Government previously warned parents to expect "periods of disruption" in schools across North Wales amid the continuing coronavirus pandemic.
In an interview with North Wales Live, Welsh Government education minister Kirsty Williams said schools had worked hard planning for the reopening, which had been "mostly successful".
But there were still new cases of coronavirus and it was a reminder for people to follow the rules and practice hand hygiene and socially distance, she said.
Anglesey
Three schools on Anglesey have reported a positive case so far.
Last week, parents and staff at Ysgol Corn Hir, in Llangefni were informed of the positive case and relevant staff and pupils were told to self-isolate for 14 days.
Today (September 15) the local authority have confirmed that one pupil attending Ysgol y Borth, in Menai Bridge, and one pupil attending Ysgol Llanfechell have tested positive for coronavirus.
Anglesey Council said their thoughts were with the pupils who have tested positive for the virus.
Gwynedd
A pupil has tested positive for coronavirus at Ysgol yr Hendre in Caernarfon.
The council stressed staff had been "following a stringent hygiene process and will continue to do so" and that parents had been informed "as quickly as possible".
Two reception classes will be closed until September 28 but the rest of the school will remain open as usual, the council confirmed.
It has also been confirmed that two kitchen staff members at Ysgol Friars in Bangor tested positive for coronavirus.
The school sent out an email last week informing parents that the canteen would be closed due to "unforeseen circumstances".
Parents were told to provide packed lunches for their children, but say the school did not tell them the reason why until around 11am on last Monday (September 7).
Conwy
A coronavirus case was confirmed in a student at Grwp Llandrillo Menai 's Abergele campus.
The organisation confirmed people in the same class were being taught online for two weeks after the case was confirmed on September 8.
The campus remains open to other students.
Denbighshire
In Denbighshire, 30 pupils went into self-isolation after a case was reported at Ysgol Frongoch on Rhyl Road, Denbigh.
Denbighshire County Council's lead member for education said the school and the local authority were working with Test, Trace and Protect teams and "following Welsh Government guidelines" to contain the virus.
All other classes at the site will continue as normal and and the area has been subject to a deep clean.
Flintshire
Five primary schools in Flintshire have been hit by positive cases this week.
On Monday, the council confirmed that there had been a positive case at St John the Baptist VA School in Penymynydd, Flintshire, with pupils in Year 4 being told to isolate.
On Tuesday, they confirmed that there had been a positive case at Ewloe Green Primary School and pupils in Year 3 at the school were now being asked to quarantine.
And on the same day, they said a positive case had impacted pupils at Saltney Wood Memorial Primary School in Flintshire.
Pupils in year 5 and 6 were being asked to isolate.
On Wednesday, it was confirmed that there has been a confirmed case at Sandycroft CP School.
Pupils in Year 3 and 4 at the school are being asked to self isolate and the school remains open to other pupils.
On Thursday, there was a confirmed case at Sealand County Primary School meaning pupils and staff in Year 4 had to self isolate.
There was also a case of a Year 7 pupil at Castell Alun High School in Hope who tested positive.
Coleg Cambria, which has sites in Flintshire and Wrexham, also confirmed that a small number of students had been self isolating due to a suspected case.
They did not say which specific site the case related to.
Wrexham
A primary school in Wrexham was closed for a short period after a member of staff tested positive for coronavirus.
St Christopher's School shut for a short period on September 7, and described the case as an "isolated incident".

Do you remember these golden goals? Welsh stars who have scored real belters – LeaderLive
Posted: June 20, 2020 at 9:53 am
EVERYONE loves great goals, scoring them or watching them from the stands or on TV.
Wrexham fans will remember Mickey Thomas famous FA Cup strike against Arsenal in 1992, Dom Voses wonder-goal against Gateshead five years ago or Lee Trundles tasty chips - yes he scored two worldies - against Oxford United in 2001.
My personal favourite in 46 years watching the Reds is Les Cartwrights chip on a mudbath of a pitch against Newcastle United in an FA Cup fourth round Racecourse replay back in the 1977/78 glory year.
Night games at a jam-packed Racecourse were something special in those days whether you were eight or 88.
Cartwrights cracker was one of many that season and the Welsh international also played a big part a Wrexham winner that was voted Match of The Days goal of the month back in September 1980.
Cartwright carved out the cross at Derby Countrys Baseball Ground and Ian Edwards venomous volley did the rest. Blink and you really did miss it.
Edwards said years later: I was always good at volleying. It should have been the goal of the season. Tony Morley won it for his goal at Everton.
It wasnt Edwards only claim to glory in a career that ended playing for Mold Alex in the Welsh National League.
Edwards, now a hotelier in Criccieth, became only the second Welsh international in the 20th Century - Mel Charles was the first in 1962 - to score four goals for his country.
As full international debuts go, it was special. Very special.
Forget the meaningless run-out in sun-baked Kuwait as a second half substitute for John Toshack in September 1977 because Edwards full debut 13 months later was one dreams are made of.
Born on the Welsh side of the English border in Rossett, Edwards ended up playing for Chester City so making your full international bow at Wrexhams Racecourse Ground was never going to be easy.
But centre-forward Edwards silenced the boo-boys with one of the best debuts ever in international football, scoring four goals in a 7-0 mauling of Malta - Englands World Cup qualifying opponents this weekend.
Also on the scoresheet in front of 11,475 fans at The Racecourse that October night were Brian Flynn and Mickey Thomas. Dai Davies and Cartwright - Wrexham regulars at the time - were also in starting line-up along with Joey Jones, who was poised to return home to Wrexham from Liverpool in a record 210,000 deal.
Twelve months later Edwards would be teaming up with Davies, Jones and Cartwright at Wrexham after making a controversial 125,000 move from Sealand Road back through his home village of Rossett and onto The Racecourse.
But he left Chester fans with plenty of fond memories, making up for the fact that hed fired four goals for Wales that October night by scoring a hat-trick three days later as The Seals thrashed Brentford 3-1 in front of his home supporters.
And even though his move didnt go down well with the majority of the Chester fans, it did leave the path clear for a certain Ian Rush to become their new number nine.
And Wales legend Rush duly obliged by scoring in the game after Edwards departure. More goals followed leading to Rush moving to Liverpool for 300,000 and becoming one of Anfields greatest-ever goalscorers.
Edwards career at Wrexham was dogged by a knee injury and his international career also stalled although hell never forget that winning goal at Derby - and a top-three finish in Goal of the Season competition.
There are nine other Welsh internationals who have topped the Goal of The Month rankings in the Premier League era, kicking off with Norwich Citys Jeremy Goss in August 1993.
Manchester Uniteds Mark Hughes was January 1994s winner while Barry Hornes thunderous strike for Everton in a relegation six-pointer against Wimbledon took the honours in May of that year.
Current Wales boss Ryan Giggs has a famous five to his name, scoring for Manchester United in September 1992, May 1993, February 1998, April 1999 and 10 years later in February 2009.
Gareth Bale has a hat-trick to brag about after topping the list with Tottenham in August 2010 before back-to-back winners at the start of 2013.
His current Wales team-mate Aaron Ramsey hit crackers for Arsenal in November 2013 and October 2018 and Craig Bellamy can also claim a double. One with Blackburn in April 2006 and the other for Manchester City in September 2009.
Liverpools Ian Rush was a winner in April 1993 with Wrexham-born Harry Wilson completing the list after his stunner for Bournemouth in the opening month of this season.

Heres Why Sealand Capital Galaxy (LON:SCGL) Must Use Its Cash Wisely – Simply Wall St
Posted: March 24, 2020 at 5:17 am
Theres no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
So, the natural question for Sealand Capital Galaxy (LON:SCGL) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. Lets start with an examination of the businesss cash, relative to its cash burn.
See our latest analysis for Sealand Capital Galaxy
You can calculate a companys cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. As at June 2019, Sealand Capital Galaxy had cash of UK62k and no debt. In the last year, its cash burn was UK478k. So it had a cash runway of approximately 2 months from June 2019. Its extremely surprising to us that the company has allowed its cash runway to get that short! You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
Whilst its great to see that Sealand Capital Galaxy has already begun generating revenue from operations, last year it only produced UK587k, so we dont think it is generating significant revenue, at this point. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis well focus on how the cash burn is tracking. Wed venture that the 68% reduction in cash burn over the last year shows that management are, at least, mindful of its ongoing need for cash. Sealand Capital Galaxy makes us a little nervous due to its lack of substantial operating revenue. We prefer most of the stocks on this list of stocks that analysts expect to grow.
Theres no doubt Sealand Capital Galaxys rapidly reducing cash burn brings comfort, but even if its only hypothetical, its always worth asking how easily it could raise more money to fund further growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash to drive growth. We can compare a companys cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one years operations.
Sealand Capital Galaxy has a market capitalisation of UK2.0m and burnt through UK478k last year, which is 24% of the companys market value. Thats not insignificant, and if the company had to sell enough shares to fund another years growth at the current share price, youd likely witness fairly costly dilution.
Even though its cash runway makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Sealand Capital Galaxys cash burn reduction was relatively promising. After looking at that range of measures, we think shareholders should be extremely attentive to how the company is using its cash, as the cash burn makes us uncomfortable. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 5 warning signs for Sealand Capital Galaxy (4 cant be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.

Man who went to see son play in band caught drink-driving on way home – LeaderLive
Posted: at 5:17 am
A FLINTSHIRE man who had been to see his son play in a band in Chester was arrested for drink-driving on his way home.
Lesley Paul Lyon, 61, of Windmill, Pentre Halkyn, was spotted by police driving erratically on Sealand Road early on March 2, Chester Magistrates Court heard on Friday, March 20.
He pleaded guilty to drink-driving.
Prosecuting, Amanda York said it was at 1.20am when police spotted Lyon driving his green Mitsubishi and appeared to be tapping his brakes for no reason, and had strayed over the central line on two occasions.
When stopped and asked if he had been drinking, Lyon replied: I have had a couple, yeah.
After initially refusing to get in the back of the police car, Lyon co-operated with the drink-drive test and blew 49 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, compared to the legal limit of 35.
When interviewed, he said he had been to see his son in a band and had not eaten that day.
He had seven convictions for eight previous offences, the last in 2018 for battery.
Lyon, defending himself, said: There is no excuse for drinking and driving. I am not in the habit of that.
He added he had drunk one pint in the afternoon with two further pints that evening, and had not had anything to eat.
He explained he lived remotely in Pentre Halkyn with his wife, who had Huntingtons, and there were no bus routes.
He said he had diabetes and was at risk of getting coronavirus and had respiratory issues.
Lyon added: I can only beg for leniency.
Magistrates imposed the minimum 12-month driving ban, with the option of Lyon taking a drink-drive rehabilitation course which would reduce his ban by one third.
He must pay a 120 fine plus 85 court costs and a 32 victim surcharge.

Man stabbed 56 times tells court his friend attacked him on night he’s ‘living over and over’ – North Wales Live
Posted: March 5, 2020 at 6:09 pm
A man said to have been stabbed 56 times after he was lured to a secluded spot and set upon has told a court he "lives that night over and over".
Giving evidence from behind a screen, Karl Johnson told Mold Crown Court that it was his friend Nathan Roberts who had attacked him.
Roberts denies attempted murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He accepts that he arranged to meet Mr Johnson down a dark lane near to the entrance to Corus Steel in Garden City on October 21 last year, claiming it was because he wanted to buy cocaine and the area was "convenient for drug dealing".
But Mr Johnson told the jury he was "not a drug dealer" and had driven to North Wales to collect money Roberts owed him.
It is alleged that Roberts struck Mr Johnson over the head, rendering him defenceless, and launched a "sustained knife attack" as Mr Johnson got back into his car.
The 28-year-old, of Chester Close, Shotton, Flintshire, claims it wasn't him but two black men wearing dark tracksuits who spoke with "foreign accents".
He said that, after they fled, he moved Mr Johnson into the passenger seat of the car and got into the driver's seat, saying he was going to get him to hospital, but stopped at the Texaco petrol station on Sealand Road to put air in a flat tyre.
The court heard that blood-soaked Mr Johnson staggered out of the car and collapsed on the floor of the petrol station shop while Roberts bought cans of beer and Red Bull.
Mr Johnson was rushed to hospital and needed surgery.
When he came around, he told doctors that two other men had carried out the attack - but told the jury he had no recollection of saying that in his evidence.
He said: "As far as I'm concerned, the only person there was me and my mate Nathan.
"I'm living that night over and over."
Asked by the defence whether the stabbing was linked to drugs and whether he was "treading on the toes of other dealers", Mr Johnson said: "I'm not a drug dealer. I was in the middle of nowhere."
Under cross examination, it was put to him that it wasn't Roberts who stabbed him, but Mr Johnson said: "There was no one else there."
He added: "It was Nathan who attacked me.
"I wish it wasn't. I wish that day had never happened.
"I'm suffering. I've got to live with that day for the rest of my life."
The court heard that police found cocaine and cannabis in Mr Johnson's car, along with 600 in cash, a set of scales, and some bicarbonate of soda, which the defence suggested can be used to cut cocaine.
Mr Johnson said that, while he owned up to everything that was in the car, some of it - including the cocaine - wasn't his.
The court also heard from Mohammed Arshad, a cashier who was working in the Texaco garage on the night the two men came in at around 9pm.
He described one as "in pain and full of blood", who was "making noises" and saying: "Oh my God."
The other man bought some Red Bull and beers and Mr Arshad described him as looking "totally confused", but said he was trying to help the victim by taking off his friend's jacket and using it on his chest and attempting to give him water.
Mr Arshad said he called for an ambulance and heard one of them say they'd been attacked with a knife.
The trial continues.
