Beyond the sarnie: no-cook packed lunches to beat back-to-work blues – The Guardian

Posted: September 10, 2021 at 5:30 am

If my office fridge, microwave and kettle are out of bounds thanks to Covid, what can I look to for a tasty packed lunch? Im already lugging a Thermos of tea, so nothing that needs to live in another weighty flask.Fred, London

Its hard enough navigating the many pitfalls of the packed lunch, but remove the ability to heat or chill it, and no one would blame Fred for hotfooting it to his nearest Pret. Meat and fish, say, dont take kindly to sitting in a sweaty sandwich bag for hours on end, so its wise to keep things veggie.

For this culinary challenge, use your noodle. Chef Tim Anderson, whose new book, Your Home Izakaya, is published in October, takes soba or udon as the base of his bento. Cook the noodles, then run them under cold water and dress in a little neutral oil. The key is to keep the dressing (for Anderson, that means equal parts soy sauce, mirin and rice vinegar, with onion and ginger blended in to thicken) on the side.

Anna Tobias, of Caf Deco in London, puts cucumber, carrots, boiled peas or whatever veg you want in a container with the cold noodles, then, just before you eat, pour over the dressing and toss. Anderson says other good additions include spinach and crushed sesame, green beans with ponzu, pickles, or a rolled omelette.

Speaking of eggs, tortillas are another Tobias go-to. Im a purist, so I usually go for onion, potato and egg, but you could add any number of other things from peppers to peas. Eat as is, with salad or sandwiched. And if sarnies are more your bag, its worth thinking outside the box. At this time of year, I like tomato sandwiches, sometimes with ricotta, says Missy Flynn, co-founder alongside Gabriel Pryce of Bodega Ritas in London. Remember, a sandwich doesnt have to start off as a sandwich. Put chopped fresh tomatoes, fresh herbs, olive oil and salt in a container and grab a fresh roll on your way to work. By lunchtime, the tomatoes will be soft and seasoned, so tear the roll in half, pile them in and use the oil and tomato water as a dipping sauce.

Leftovers are another of lifes great pleasures and, happily, Tobias says, filo pies are really good cold, so stash slices of spanakopita in your bag. If leftover curry is up for grabs, Anderson makes curry pan a savoury doughnut. Yes, its a bit of a faff (hello, Sunday baking project), but its delicious eaten at room temperature, so negates the fridge/microwave problem. Make a basic doughnut dough, roll into baseball-sized balls, flatten, then put a good spoonful of Japanese curry in the middle. Fold over the dough, seal and chill, brush with egg wash, roll in panko and prove until nearly doubled in size, then fry or bake.

Perhaps the simplest solution, however, is to look to vegetable dishes that are traditionally eaten at room temperature (think ratatouille or Italian roast veg), though they wont quite cut it come autumn, so Fred may then have to bite the bullet and invest in a second flask (sorry). As Guardian columnist Ravinder Bhogal says: Theyre excellent at keeping soups, dals, pasta, leftover curries and stews hot, and at providing a warm, comforting hug when the back-to-office blues hit.

NASA says the Mars Perseverance rover has collected its first sample – Yahoo Singapore News

Posted: at 5:30 am

After initially failing to capture a rock sample, NASA has confirmed that Perseverance succeeded in its second attempt. The space agency has verified that a pencil-width core of rust-colored rock is safely trapped in the rover's sample tube tube, ready to be processed and sent back to Earth, CNET has reported.

After NASA initially thought it had nabbed the first sample last month, a subsequent check showed the sample tube empty. That created something of a mystery, with scientists wondering where the rock could have gone. Eventually, NASA determined that the particular sample it tried to collect was actually too powdery to be collected. "The hardware performed as commanded, but the rock did not cooperate this time," JPL engineers said at the time.

This time, NASA wasn't getting ahead of itself. While photos taken on September 1st shortly after the operation clearly showed rock in the collector, NASA wanted to be "extra certain" that it was successfully stored. Following an operation to percuss the drill bit (and ingest the sample), new images were taken, but the position of the sun made it difficult to see the rock.

This Saturday, however, the sun cooperated and the sample inside is clearly visible. The images match earlier photos of a grind spot on a nearby sample section, revealing a rust-colored, possibly sedimentary rock that could show the presence of iron along with olivine and other minerals that may have precipitated from water, according to Arizona State University's Steven Ruff (via his YouTube channel Mars Guy).

Now, Perseverance must process, seal and and eventually store the sample somewhere on the surface of Mars. It will then repeat the process and collect as many samples as possible, leaving them scattered about the surface. NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) will send a Martian lander and sample collection rover to the same location near Jezero Crater to gather up those tubes and place them into a rocket bound for Earth.

The only challenge is that said rover and rocket haven't been built yet and don't even have a finished design. However, the agencies involved plan to launch it to Mars by 2026, with arrival there by 2028. They don't expect to receive the samples until 2031, and suffice to say, all of those phases of the Perseverance project will be a huge challenge.

A new facility will be built in Denmark to produce carbon natural e-methanol which will be supplied for Maersk as part of its efforts to develop the alternative fuel in a pilot project with its first dual-fuel methanol-powered vessel. A.P. Moller Maersk will partner with REintegrate, a subsidiary of the Danish renewable energy company European Energy, working closely on the development of the facility.

This type of partnership could become a blueprint for how to scale green fuel production through collaboration with partners across the industry ecosystem, and it will provide us with valuable experiences as we are progressing on our journey to decarbonize our customers supply chains, said Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Fleet & Strategic Brands, A.P. Moller - Maersk. Sourcing the fuels of the future is a significant challenge, and we need to be able to scale production in time. This agreement with European Energy/REintegrate brings us on track to deliver on our ambition to have the worlds first container vessel operated on carbon-neutral methanol on the water by 2023.

REintegrate has been pursuing the production of green e-methanol in its test laboratory in Aalborg. Plans call for the new facility to produce the approximately 10,000 tons of e-methanol that Maersks first vessel will require annually while in service. The methanol facility will use renewable energy and biogenic CO2 to produce e-methanol. The fuel production is expected to start in 2023.

Were proud to be a part of the first large-scale e-methanol production in Denmark, said Knud Erik Andersen, CEO, European Energy. While renewable energy is becoming more and more common in the energy mix of electricity consumption, this is one of the first steps in heavy transportation towards using 100 percent renewable energy.

Earlier this year, Maersk announced that it would begin to explore methanol through the operation of a pilot vessel, a feeder operated by a Maersk subsidiary, Sealand Europe, on a Baltic shipping route. The 2,100 TEU feeder ship was ordered from Hyundai Mipo Dockyards in South Korea and is expected to enter service in mid-2023.

The energy needed for the power-to-methanol production will be provided by a solar farm located in southern Denmark. The companies said that had not yet decided where the power-to-methanol facility will be located. The new facility will be its third e-methanol facility developed by European Energy. They are also constructing an e-methanol facility in northern Denmark that is expected to start production in 2022.

Maersk secures green e-methanol for the world’s first container vessel operating on carbon-neutral fuel; new plant in Denmark – Green Car Congress

Posted: at 6:07 pm

Maersk has identified its partners to produce green fuel for its first vessel to operate on carbon-neutral methanol (earlier post): REintegrate, a subsidiary of the Danish renewable energy company European Energy.

REintegrate and European Energy will establish a new Danish facility to produce the approx. 10,000 tonnes of carbon neutral e-methanol that Maersks first vessel with the ability to operate on green e-methanol will consume annually. Maersk will work closely with REintegrate and European Energy on the development of the facility.

This type of partnership could become a blueprint for how to scale green fuel production through collaboration with partners across the industry ecosystem, and it will provide us with valuable experiences as we are progressing on our journey to decarbonise our customers supply chains. Sourcing the fuels of the future is a significant challenge, and we need to be able to scale production in time. This agreement with European Energy/REintegrate brings us on track to deliver on our ambition to have the worlds first container vessel operated on carbon neutral methanol on the water by 2023.

Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Fleet & Strategic Brands, A.P. Moller - Maersk

The methanol facility will use renewable energy and biogenic CO2 to produce the e-methanol. The fuel production is expected to start in 2023.

The energy needed for the power-to-methanol production will be provided by a solar farm in Kass, Southern Denmark.

REintegrate has a track record for producing green e-methanol in its test laboratory in Aalborg. The new facility will be its third e-methanol facility, as they are also constructing an e-methanol facility in Skive with startup in 2022.

While the renewable energy will be produced in Southern Jutland it is yet to be decided where in Denmark the power-to-methanol facility will be located.

Maersk announced the dual fuel vessel, an industry first, in February 2021. In June, Maersk announced that Hyundai Mipo Dockyards will be building the 2100 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent) feeder.

The worlds first methanol feeder will be 172 meters long and it is expected to join the Maersk fleet in mid-2023. It will sail in the network of Sealand Europe, a Maersk subsidiary, on the Baltic shipping route between Northern Europe and the Bay of Bothnia. It will fly the Danish flag.

For years, Ive been meaning to get mineral oil to use on my ever-growing collection of wood and bamboo cutting boards and wooden utensils. Its one of those items that it turns out isnt all that easy to find. My dad and I had this discussion recently, after I finally found a food-grade mineral oil that has become the superstar of my cleaning repertoire. It turns out, mineral oil has many uses beyond conditioning and protecting wood and bamboo from warping (as well as thwarting bacterial buildup). Be sure to get food grade mineral oil if you are planning to use it on items you use for cooking. Here are just a few ways it can be used around the house.

Get food grade, 100 percent Howards Cutting Board Oil locally at Howards Cutting Board Oil at Harrys Ace Hardware on Magazine Street.

NOLA Boards, which is on Magazine Street and has a location in Baton Rouge, has a mineral oil and beeswax board conditioner made with mineral and coconut oil, Vitamin E and beeswax. According to the NOLA Boards website, it can be used alone or as a follow up to mineral oil.

Finally, Vintage Green Review on Magazine Street carries Humble Suds Revival Wood and Leather Conditioner, which contains organic raw beeswax, vegetable glycerin , organic cold expeller-pressed virgin coconut oil, organic extra virgin olive oil, grapefruit oil and lemongrass oil. It can be used on cutting boards, furniture and leather goods.

Do you use mineral oil? If so and you have a use that isnt listed above, please share in comments or email melanie@myneworleans.com.

Boil-water advisory partially lifted in Montreal’s West Island – CBC.ca

Posted: at 6:07 pm

The City of Montreal says a boil-water advisory inMontreal'sWest Island has been partially lifted, more than a week after tests found water in the Dollard-des-Ormeauxreservoir had been contaminated.

Residents in DDOcan now safely use their taps, but people in Pierrefonds-Roxboroare still being asked to boil their water before drinking it or brushing their teeth.

In a statement to CBC, city spokeswoman Audrey Gauthier said construction work was being done to seal and reinforce the reservoir last week. She says the renovations combined with heavy rains allowed contaminants to seep through a crack in the structure one that wasn't visible to workers.

Gauthier says the city found the crack and filled it, securedthe rest of the reservoir anddisinfected the water inside it. She says in the past week, the water quality has been tested more than it usually is in a whole month, with samples being taken almost every hour.

Gauthier says the city needsto havetwo full days of lab results demonstrating the water is safe to drink again before theadvisory canbe fully lifted.

Pierrefondsresidents in the affected areaare still being asked to boil water for at least one minute before consuming it. The city says water can be used for showering or other domestic purposes without boiling it first.
