How to Have the Perfect Saturday Biking Around Charleston – Bicycling

Charleston, South Carolina, where Ive lived for 15 years, has become a busy city. My home is just one mile north of downtown, and it feels foolish to drive my car in. Im usually happy to ride one of my bikes to town, but it can get really hot in the South. No one wants to arrive at their destination on a 100-degree day dripping with sweat. Recently, I found a new way to get around the city: an electric bike from Rad Power Bikes.

Afterward, we wound our way around the west side of the Charleston peninsula, passing the Medical University of South Carolina hospital and heading down to the Battery along the waters edge. From there, we cruised up to Burbages Grocery, which has been in business since 1948, for a cold drink (the temperature was already 90 degrees) and a late-morning snack. I put my drink securely in my RadRunner cup holder, and we hit the road again.
We half-pedaled, half-powered through the historic streets of Lenwood, Legare, and South Battery back down to the water, passing Fort Sumter, the historic site where the first cannon of the Civil War was fired. We followed East Bay Street to Rainbow Row, a line of pastel-colored homes facing the water, where we took the obligatory photo.
As the sun passed noon, it was time to switch the Rad Runner from mode 1 all the way to 5full power on the displayand go full-throttle to Leons Poultry & Oyster Shop on upper King Street. This fantastic restaurant, which opened eight years ago, is located in a converted service station, and the historic rehab rarely has an empty table. Colby and I parked our bikes out front, grabbed the keys from the battery packs, and found two seats at the bar, where we enjoyed peel-and-eat shrimp.
By 2 p.m., we were effortlessly riding up and over the massive Ravenel suspension bridge, using the bike and pedestrian lane, on our way to the beach at Sullivans Island. We had installed the Rad Large Platform Rack on Colbys bike before we headed out in the morning, and used the three-pack of Cargo Straps to attach a duffle bag filled with swimsuits, towels, and water.
For those of you who are new to e-bikes like I am, let me explain something amazing: Some electric-powered bikes use a pedal-assist battery and components, requiring you to pedal. Rad Power Bikes have a simple throttle on the right-hand grip, which you twist to make the bike go. These bikes are designed with such precision quality that you can stop pedaling completely, which allowed us to silently ride at 19 miles per hour. Thank you, 750-watt geared hub motor.
We covered the 10-mile stretch to Sullivans Island in 40 minutes, using a few sidewalks, the quiet roads of Mount Pleasants Old Village, and a bike-and-running lane for the final two miles. While passing though Mount Pleasant, we made a brief stop at the Heart of Gold Gallery to see vintage rock-and-roll photographs.

When we arrived at the beach, we pedaled our seven-speed steeds straight over the soft sand down to the waters edge where we headed away from the crowd and rode on the beach for a while. The 3.3-inch tires rolled smoothly over every kind of sand. Afterward, we rode in to the town of Sullivan's Island, where we noticed a shop called Sealand on Center Street.

At the front door, we saw that they had Rad Power Bikes for rent. Sarah, who worked at the shop, was kind enough to show us how easily our batteries come in and out, using the provided key. Colby and I had been riding all day and wanted to make sure we had enough battery to get home, so Sarah put them on her store chargers while we ran across the street to Mex 1 Coastal Cantina for tacos.
We rode back into downtown Charleston at 4:30 p.m., having covered over 35 miles for the day. We were well-fed, sun-kissed, and happy. We rolled the RadRunners into the garage, and put them on their charger for another adventure in the very near future.

Wingin It: Jollof rice brings the heat to the Houston Texans – Buffalo Rumblings

You like football. You like food. So do we! So much so, in fact, that we smash the two together to bring you a Buffalo Bills-inspired recipe each week. Whether its a take on an opponents fave or some real mad scientist **** coming your way, Wingin It is the spot to watch. This week were prepping for the Houston Texans!
If theres one thing recipe sites are notorious for its voluminous entries that make you scroll for hours before hitting the actual recipe. I try to avoid that. Quick intro for the premise. Quick explanation on the tie-in for the week. Not this week. Buckle up.
Starting this series over (holy crap) three years ago I had a pretty clear goal in mind. I wanted to virtually tour the culinary world of NFL cities. As we started running out of cities I opened the door wider. At this point, season four of Wingin It is pretty much a world tourand thats awesome.
It was never just about food. Like football, food has the power to draw people together. How many people have thought that smells sooooo good and were compelled to ask a stranger What is that? I bet that number is incalculable. Food drives curiosity, and curiosity is good for this world. So back to football.
When Efe Obada joined the Buffalo Bills we got articles like this one, detailing his life story. Read it. Search for interviews. Its 100 percent worth your time if you havent already. It starts in Nigeria and ends...well who knows? The man seems determined to make the most of what hes been given and holy heck is it easy to root for him.
Obada made me realize, I know next to nothing about Nigeria. That led to curiosity. And now it leads to food. Jollof rice hails from Nigeria and appears for Texans week as Texas is home to the largest number of Americans reporting Nigerian ancestry.
So you get a long story this week to hopefully remind you of several things. There is good food all over the world. There are good people all over the world. Curiosity is a good thing. When all three come together, something special happens.
Note: Usually I create a recipe after researching many and taking the best bits and making it my own. For this week, I looked at several but loved this one for lots of reasons. Mine is different, but pretty directly based off of this one and the discussion on the rice itself is a good read. Author Kitchen Butterfly says about Jollof rice its that one dish across West Africa that is a unifying dish.

Youll need: Blender
Rice6 Roma tomatoes, chopped3 large bell peppers, chopped (seed removal optional)1 large red onion (half chopped, half sliced)2 tsp curry powder1 tsp thyme2 dried bay leaves3 oz. tomato paste6 cups stock (divided and whatever type you like, I used chicken)4 Tbsp unsalted butter, divided4 cups washed, uncooked basmati riceSalt and pepper to taste (Kitchen Butterfly recommends both black and white pepper)
Sauce12 cup hot sauceRoughly 1 hot pepper3 Tbsp apple cider14 tsp curry powder2 Tbsp unsalted butter
This takes some time and a good many pans but its well worth it and youll have more than enough rice for a familywhich leads me to the main variation in my recipe. Kitchen Butterflys includes the heat in the beginning when youre creating the stew that will end up flavoring the whole deal. For many families there might be disagreements on how spicy dinner should be. So I went with one of the hottest sauces Ive done to date so you can stir in as much or as little as you want.
For the prep gallery, the first picture is showing the fact that we dont have a blender, we have a smoothie maker. It does the blending incredibly well for this kind of thing, but I ended up doing four batches of puree for the stew, and another batch to make the hot sauce.
The second picture shows the room temperature veggie puree with chicken stock. It kind of looks like milk and not super appetizing but keep pushing through. Its about to smell really good. The third picture is when it starts to boil and looks like something from Gremlins (which is the best Christmas movie of all time). The final picture is there to remind you whats on the other side.

Road section on Clockwise Chester scheme to revert to two-way traffic next month – The Chester Standard

TWO-WAY traffic will return to a section of a major Chester city centre road, as the Clockwise Chester scheme enters its final months.
The first phase of lifting the Clockwise diversions on Chesters inner ring road will begin at the end of October.
The move means that two-way traffic will be allowed along Nicholas Street, following the completion of the first five sections of the new surface water drain.
Extensive reinstatement works will now commence along St Martins Way and Nicholas Street to install new traffic signals and central reservations ahead of reopening the Nicholas Street section, currently expected from October 25.
The southbound lane along Nicholas Street between the Watergate Street junction and the Grosvenor Roundabout will allow traffic coming from the Sealand Road/New Crane Street direction to turn left or right at the junction with the inner ring road, and reduce journey times by removing the need to follow a Clockwise loop to leave the city via the Grosvenor Bridge.
The Weaver Street junction with Nicholas Street will also allow for a left or right turn.
The new-look Clockwise Chester scheme due to come into effect from late October.
Nicholas Street and St Martins Way will remain open to northbound traffic during the reinstatement works but will be limited to one lane until after the Hunter Street junction to enable a safe working area for the central reservation reinstatement.
Work will commence in January to remove other sections of the Clockwise diversions, including to allow southbound traffic from the Fountains Roundabout along St Martins Way and returning the section along Vicars Lane past the amphitheatre to two-way traffic.
Further announcements will be made to confirm the dates and the reopening of Nuns Road and Castle Drive once the remaining drainage tunnel works are completed.
The new surface water drainage tunnel has been a significant investment in Chesters future and is a necessary requirement ahead of major regeneration schemes and vastly improved city centre facilities, including the first phase of the Northgate development, currently under way and set to open next summer.
It will also increase Chester's drainage capacity and should reduce instances of flooding and drain bursts in the city centre, and reduce the number of untreated sewage discharges into the river due to heavy rainfall when the current network is already at capacity.
Councillor Karen Shore, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member - environment, highways and strategic transport, said: I am very pleased to announce the first stages in the lifting of Clockwise and appreciate that the drain works have caused considerable inconvenience to many drivers.
Despite facing numerous challenges to the drain works, not least Covid restrictions and material delays, I am delighted to confirm that we can begin the partial lifting in October; and I would like to thank everyone impacted by the drain works for their continued patience over the past year while we complete as quickly as possible.

Lately, my ears have been shocked by a once-familiar sensation: bass. Blame aging, or simply being out of practice after so many months of lockdown, but the piercing ringing in my ears I experienced after a few hours of deliciously loud, amplified music was worse than any hangover. And it might not be just me: I think theres going to be a heightened sense of sensitivity to loud sounds post-pandemic, because everyone has been in quiet for the past year and a half, so now is a pivotal moment to be proactive about this, says Julie Glick, Au.D., an audiologist who runs Musicians Hearing Solutions in Los Angeles.
Coming home with ringing ears after a night out is nothing new, of course. Dance floors at clubs and live music venues typically hover between 95 and 105 decibels, which the CDC says can create hearing loss in as few as five minutes. Even one exposure can cause a temporary reduction in hearing, says Glick. If you're exposed over and over again, its too late by the time it gets to be severe. We lose our ability to hear high frequencies as a function of getting older, so it's double damage.
Wearing earplugs is the best way to ensure youll hear all those crunchy mids and feathery trebles in the future. But a cheap pair of over-the-counter earplugs can feel like a sacrifice: Foam earplugs protect against dangerously high decibels by stuffing up the ear canal, creating air pockets that dampen sounds in the process.
That's why serious club-goers have gravitated toward custom silicone earplugs molded specifically to their anatomy. These can achieve extremely flat filtersas in, just as much treble as bass gets shut out. It's the sound as the artist intended, just a little quieter. And outfits like Crystal Guardian, which has brought glitter-filled custom silicone creations into the heart of New Yorks nightlife community, are making wearing earplugs to the club, dare we say it, cool.
Disposable foam earplugs do an excellent job of protecting you, at the expense of compromising the musicit takes out all the high end and leaves the low end, says Crystal Guardian founder Elliot Cash. These are the closest thing to turning down the overall volume of music in the space youre in.
Cash launched the company in 2019, after a stint fabricating custom earplugs for a company in Manhattan. While custom earplugs can run as high as $300, Cash charges $100 per pair. Word quickly spread in the club communityand then the pandemic shut down venues, and Crystal Guardian followed. The one-person operation reopened in May of this year, alongside clubs and a surge of new interest from professionals and amateurs alike.
Tracks on big systems have been mastered and mixed to sound a specific way, and I want to hear them that same way or the way the DJ is presenting them, says Adi Dahiya, a DJ and party promoter who was fitted for a pair of Crystal Guardian earplugs at Nowadays popular daytime party, Mister Sunday. Because they fit into your ear so well, there arent any weird air pockets where the sound is muffled.
Since the summer, Crystal Guardian has gone straight to the source, holding monthly pop-ups at progressive bars and clubs like Brooklyn Made, Mood Ring, Jupiter Disco, and Nowadays. Now, Cash is busier than ever. He's also made custom earplugs for staff at each of these venues, along with DJs like Nowadays cofounder Eamon Harkin and the Discwoman collective's cofounder Umfang. People shouldn't have to be damaging their hearing while working, performing, or dancing at a show, says Cash.

New map shows parts of Flintshire and Wrexham most at risk from flooding – LeaderLive

PARTS of Wrexham and Flintshire will be under further scrutiny for future planning applications after Natural Resources Wales published a map showing the areas most at risk of flooding and coastal erosion.
The map shows that large parts of Flintshire are at risk of flooding by the sea. The green marks this area out.
They include communities along the Dee Estuary and river - Talacre, Mostyn, Ffynnongroyw, Llannerch-y-Mr, Greenfield, Bagillt, Flint, Connah's Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Pentre, Sandycroft, Garden City, Sealand. It also covers part of Broughton, including some of the Airbus complex, Bretton and Saltney.
In Wrexham, areas near the River Dee such as Trevalyn Meadows are also covered by the green area warning.
The North Wales coastline and areas along the Dee Estuary such as Mostyn, Greenfield, Bagillt and Flint are also at risk of coastal erosion, which is visible on the map by a red line.
Dark blue shows the flood risk for rivers in Zone 3 and light blue for Zone 2 (Zone 3 is a higher risk than Zone 2). Large areas at risk here are numerous parts in the Gronant and Talacre area, Ffynnongroyw, Llannerch-y-Mr, Greenfield and Greenfield Dock, Flint, Oakenholt, Connah's Quay, Shotton, the Queensferry, Pentre, Sandycroft and Mancot area, Bretton and Saltney.
Parts of communities along the River Alyn, including Rhydymwyn, Mold, Llong, Padeswood, Pontblyddyn, Caergwrle, Hope, Abermorddu and Cefnybedd, are also at risk according to the map.
Areas of Wrexham town are also at flood risk from rivers, including parts of Mount Street, Rivulet Road, Salop Road, and Foundry Road.
As are areas along the River Gwenfro in Caia Park.
Much of Bangor on Dee and parts of land around Overton, Erbistock, Worthenbury, Holt and Fardon, Rossett and Trevalyn, are also marked in dark blue.
Along the River Dee, parts of Llangollen and Froncysyllte are in the at risk area on the map.
Purple areas are places at risk of flooding from small watercourses at level 3 and pink areas cover level 2. These include areas of Gronant, Ffynnongroyw, Greenfield, Holywell, Bagillt, Flint, Connah's Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Pentre, Mancot, Deeside Industrial Park, Broughton and Bretton, Kinnerton, Mold, Buckley, and Padeswood.
In Wrexham, areas at risk from small watercourse flooding include many small areas within the town centre, as well as parts of Llay, Gresford, Brymbo, and rural areas.
A large part of Deeside, stretching from Saltney to Golftyn, comes under a defence zone called TAN15 Defended Zones, which is highlighted on the map by the black box with diagonal lines inside. This shows that the area has strong defences from flood risks from the sea.
Another defence zone covering coastal towns Rhyl and Prestatyn also covers Gronant and Talacre in Flintshire.
There are smaller zones covering parts of Mold, Bangor on Dee, and alongside the A483 in Wrexham.
What this means
The publication of the map means that any future development in Wales has to take into account the flooding and coastal erosion risk caused by climate change.
Developers will have to work with the map under the Technical Advice Note 15 (TAN 15) which will inform plans for local development and decisions on planning applications in the areas at risk of flooding and coastal erosion.
Julie James, Welsh Government climate change minister, said: Flood risk and coastal erosion in Wales is increasing as a result of climate change.
Serious flooding events are becoming more frequent and some areas currently at little risk will become vulnerable to flooding as out climate continues to change.
As the National Strategy for Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management in Wales recognises, the planning system can help communities be more resilient to the effects of climate change by locating development in areas away from risk of flooding.
Improved knowledge of the places which will be at risk in the future can help keep people safe, by preventing the damage and disruption to homes, workplaces and infrastructure that flooding can cause.
New developments of homes, emergency services, schools and hospitals must not be located in areas of high flood risk without strong flood defences, says the new TAN 15 guidelines.
Welsh Ministers will be notified if local planning authorities are planning to approve a scheme against this advice and will be able to directly make a decision on the application.
How will the map work?
The flood map for planning shows four types of flood zone, which each have specific advice for proposed developments.
They are based on current risk levels with allowances for climate change. Allowing for planning decisions to take account of the expected impact of climate change on flood risk in the future.
The map is published by Natural Resources Wales and will be updated in May and November each year.
There are acceptability tests for development in areas of low risk and areas protected by strong flood defences, and for the less vulnerable developments in areas at high risk of flooding.
The tests include providing justification for the location, being on brownfield land and being resilient in the event of a flood.
The new TAN 15 and the map will come into force on Wednesday, December 1 but have been published today to allow planning authorities and developers to prepare. After December 1, all planning applications will be assessed against these.
All local development plans under review and have not reached the formal examination stage must use the advice and map after December 1.

Lawmakers have been playing a lot of political hardball on Capitol Hill given the multiple crises consuming Washington, but it was actual hardball that drew Democrats and Republicans to Nationals Park on Wednesday night for the annual congressional baseball charity game.
The game provided a brief moment of camaraderie amid deep partisan division and high drama in Congress, as leaders rushed to try to head off a government shutdown and a potential federal default while Democrats toiled to bridge bitter rifts among them over a huge piece of social policy.
It also offered yet another venue for the Democrats to try to corral votes for a $1 trillion infrastructure bill slated for a House vote later Thursday, which currently appears far short of the support needed to pass given liberal defections.
President Biden a former participant in his Senate days made an extended appearance, even mingling in the Republican dugout with his political foes. Speaker Nancy Pelosi was also on hand to do what she usually does exhort her fellow Democrats to deliver a win. They did not in this case, falling to the Republican lineup 13-12 in a close game that Ms. Pelosi must hope is not a harbinger for the tough votes she is facing.
The president drew a few boos from the Republican side of the stands, but was welcomed in the partys dugout for photos and ribbing even though the red-uniformed G.O.P. lawmakers oppose almost everything on his legislative agenda. He handed out ice cream bars whose wrappers bore the presidential seal and took calls as he watched the game.
Ms. Pelosi could be seen on a telecast of the game feverishly working her own phone from the stands, with a crucial intramural Democratic showdown looming on the infrastructure measure, which progressives have threatened to sink until they get a vote on a $3.5 trillion social policy package that carries most of their priorities.
The play of the night, however, was an actual out-of-the-park home run by Republican Representative Greg Steube of Florida, an impressive feat in a game played by a bunch of amateurs well past their playing primes in most cases.
The big question after the game was how Ms. Pelosi and her party would fare when their moment at the legislative plate arrived.

Cape Town - After three veteran spearfishermen were attacked by what was believed to be a leopard seal in False Bay, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) appealed to spearfishermen, divers, paddlers, bathers and surfers to practice caution around all seals, and leopard seals in particular.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said three fishermen, Jerome Petersen, Josua Joubert, and Cameron Vannithing, encountered the seal and were attacked about 400m off shore, between Spaniard Rock and Caravan Reef, before they could start spearfishing.
Petersen appeared to be targeted by the seal and was bitten on the leg, as it relentlessly bit and bumped all three fishermen while they tried to get back to safety.
The seal snapped and broke off their flippers, disarmed them of their spearguns and caused serious bites, puncture wounds and soft tissue injuries, scrapes and bruising, said Lambinon.
Lambinon said the cause of the aggressive encounter remained unknown, but marine scientists warned that leopard seals were known to be dangerous, and marine authorities appeal to the public to be cautious around sea animals in general.
Stellenbosch University senior lecturer and Sea Search co-director Tess Gridley said although the species of seal had not been confirmed, several leopard seals had been spotted in Western Cape waters in recent months.
Despite the fact that leopard seals were native to Antarctica, this possible sighting followed a leopard seal having washed ashore at Kommetjie in July.
Unfortunately there were no images or videos to confirm the species, and understandably the fishermen under attack were more involved in getting to safety than confirming species. If it was a leopard seal, it's far from home and may be effectively lost, sick or hungry, said Gridley.
However, Gridley said the most common seal species in South Africa was the Cape fur seal, which was sadly dying off as a result of plastic pollution in the ocean, but reports of Cape fur seal attacks were rare.
Gridley said the leopard seal was an Antarctic species and ambush predator. They were the second largest seal species, but did not normally come into contact with people as they were native to Antarctica.
Spatial Planning and Environment Mayco member Marian Nieuwoudt said they were interviewing the divers involved in the incident, and would continue to follow up on information from multiple sources to determine what species of seal was involved.
At this point, we do not believe there is cause for concern. However, we do remind people that on the rare occasion that they do come across a leopard seal that they should leave it alone, give it significant space, and remember that they are apex predators, said Nieuwoudt.

The base can be prepared a day or two in advance if you want to get ahead. If you do this, just hold back on adding the lemon juice (as well as the eggs) until you are ready to eat. Adding the lemon juice too early to the leaves will cause them to discolour. Chunks of feta dotted on top are a lovely addition here, instead of or as well as the yoghurt. A final sprinkle of zaatar also works really well.
Shatta is on every Palestinian table, cutting through rich foods or pepping others up. Eggs, meat, vegetables: they all love it.
As always with anything being left to ferment, the jar you put your chillies into needs to be properly sterilised. Once made, shatta will keep in the fridge for up to 6 months. The oil will separate from the chillies once its in the fridge, so just give it a good stir, for everything to combine, before using.
Serves 2olive oil 2 tbspgreen shatta 1 tsp (see below), or 1 tsp green harissa, as an alternativeunsalted butter 15gleek 1 large, halved lengthways and the white parts sliced 2cm thick (180g)swiss chard 400g, leaves pulled off the stems and chopped into roughly 2cm pieces; stems cut into roughly 2cm dicespring onions 3 large, thinly sliced (60g)green chilli , finely chopped (5g)garlic 1 clove, crushedground cumin tspground coriander tspparsley leaves 20g, roughly choppeddill 10g, roughly choppedlemon juice 1 tbspeggs 4salt and black pepperGreek-style yoghurt to serve (optional)
For the shatta (red or green)Makes 1 medium jarred or green chillies 250g, stems trimmed and then very thinly sliced (with seeds)salt 1 tbspcider vinegar 3 tbsplemon juice 1 tbspolive oil to cover and seal
For the shatta, place the chillies and salt in a medium sterilised jar and mix well. Seal the jar and store in the fridge for 3 days. On the third day, drain the chillies, transfer them to a food processor and blitz: you can either blitz well to form a fine paste or roughly blitz so that some texture remains. Add the vinegar and lemon juice, mix to combine, then return the mixture to the same jar. Pour enough olive oil on top to seal, and keep in the fridge.
For the shakshuka, mix 1 teaspoons of the olive oil with the shatta (or harissa) and set aside.
Put the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil and all the butter into a large saute pan (for which you have a lid) and place on a medium heat. Once hot, add the leek, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 6 minutes, covered, stirring a few times, until the leek has softened but has not taken on any colour.
Add the chard stems in batches, if you need to and spring onions and cook for another 6 minutes, covered, stirring occasionally, until completely softened. Add the chilli, garlic and ground spices and cook, uncovered, for another minute before adding the chard leaves, parsley, dill and teaspoon of salt. Stir to wilt slightly, then add 100ml of water and cook for 10 minutes, covered, until the leaves cook down and completely wilt. Add the lemon juice, then use a spoon to make four wells in the mix. Crack an egg into each well and sprinkle each one lightly with salt and pepper. Cover the pan and cook for a final 4 minutes or so, until the egg whites are set but the yolks are still runny. Dot the shatta-oil mix over the eggs and serve at once, with a spoonful of yoghurt alongside, if desired.
