Patti LuPone Sets the Record Straight on Missed Company Performances – TheaterMania.com
Posted: December 29, 2021 at 10:40 am
Tony winner Patti LuPone has taken to social media to reveal the real reason she missed two preview performances the week before the opening night of Company on Broadway.
"I don't normally do this," she writes on her much-followed Twitter account, "but since there are a few little shits out there writing false things about Company, here's the truth: I missed two shows with a rotavirus. My toilet can confirm this." She goes on to praise the stage crew and Covid safety protocols at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
You can read the full statement below:
Marianne Elliott's controversial revival production of the 1970 Stephen Sondheim musical recasts 35-year-old bachelor Bobby as "Bobbie," a woman of the same age navigating the single life in Manhattan.
In his review, critic David Gordon highlights the comic acting in the production, stating, "this is the most fun I've ever had at this show." He also has high praise for LuPone, who delivers an unforgettable performance "The Ladies Who Lunch": "I clapped like a trained seal and I'd do it again," he writes. Read his full review here.
Like the vast majority of Broadway shows, Company is still running. The next performance is tonight at 7pm.

Smallest country of the World: All You Need To Know About Sealand – Jagran Josh
Posted: December 23, 2021 at 9:44 pm
The Principality of Sealand is the smallest country in the world as it claims to be. It is located in the North Sea near the British territorial waters. Take a look at the details of this country below.
Sealand: The smallest country of the world
The smallest country in the world is not Vatican City, but this small offshore platform located in the North Sea, known as Sealand. As the name suggests it is a land surrounded by sea on all sides. Vatican City is the smallest country however, that is internationally recognised. Sealand on the other hand is not! Let us know about the smallest country in the world below. Also one may be surprised to know that this is the only country in the world to have no cases of Covid 19 at all.

What is the difference between Chopper and Helicopter?
Sealand was built by the British during World War 2. It was used as an army and navy fort. It was situated outside UK waters (boundary) so it was supposed to be demolished after the war was over, but somehow it was not destroyed.
During World War 2, in 1943, HM Fort Roughs was constructed by the UK Government as its Maunsell Forts. These primarily found use as a defence against vital shipping lanes in estuaries close by. It was also fruitful against the German mine-laying aircraft. These Maunsell forts were decommissioned in 1956.
In the year 1967, Sealand was occupied by Paddy Roy Bates. He claimed it from the Pirate radio broadcasters and declared it to be a sovereign country. However, for the last 54 years, it has been working in defiance of the United Kingdom Government.
The Principality of Sealand is however a disputed micronation. It is located 12 kilometres off the coast of Suffolk as its territory.
Here is the Prince of Sealand and his seal:
In 1968, the British workmen tried to enter the Principality of Sealand to service their navigational buoy. Bates tried to scare them off by firing some warning shots. He was however a British subject at that time so he was summoned by the UK Court. He was not penalised as the crime committed was outside 3 nautical miles limit of the country's waters and thus the case could not proceed.
It was then Bates introduced a Constitution, a national flag and national anthem along with currencies and passports in Sealand.

The Massachusetts flag glorifies the violence committed by colonizers Native Americans want it changed – Fairfield Citizen
Posted: at 9:44 pm
(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.)
(THE CONVERSATION) Given the violent history of English colonizers in New England, its a wonder why the state insignia of Massachusetts, fully emblazoned on todays state flag, still includes a sword dangling over the head of a Native American.
It was a little more than 30 years ago when the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority got rid of its offensive logo that featured a pilgrims hat with a Native American arrow shot through the middle of it.
The state insignia still stands, and like many campaigns to rid schools and towns of demeaning mascots and public statues, the efforts to remove it starts with an accurate version of history. In the case of the Mass Pike logo, it started with a letter-writing campaign by second graders learning about the history of Plymouth Plantation in 1620.
The story of the current Massachusetts insignia starts with the 17th century seal of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. This insignia depicted an almost naked Native American, covered in some leaves, with a speech bubble stating: Come over and help us.
This earlier seal was replaced by a few others, but in 1895, the image of a Native American was reintroduced to the state flag. At first glance, the current seal appears less offensive. The Native American is dressed at least, and the speech bubble was deleted. But there is a sword dangling over the Native Americans head.
This sword is modeled after the weapon used by Miles Standish, who was in charge of Plymouth Plantations military affairs. As English colonial records show, Standish led several violent battles against Native Americans.
During one such fight, a Native American was decapitated and his head was displayed on a pike as a trophy outside of Plymouth, a common practice in early modern English warfare. Moreover, the belt on the image is based on the one worn by Metacom, a tribal leader of the Pokanoket Tribe and the Wampanoag Nation who was called King Philip by English settlers. Metacom led an anti-colonial resistance movement in the 1670s in what is known as King Philips War.
Again, and following an established pattern in the region, after Metacom was killed, his head was impaled on a pike at Plymouth and left displayed there for two decades.
Given the central role that violent warfare against Indigenous peoples played during the colonization of New England, the state motto, By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty, raises questions about the accuracy and sensitivity of the states choice of images and words to represent its history and values.
Change the flag
Native American groups such as the United American Indians of New England have been critical of the state seal and other inaccurate Indigenous representations for decades. The seal is not the only target of protests.
The insignia and mottos of several Massachusetts towns, as well as statues, buildings and sports mascots across the state, have caused controversy. The town seal of Andover, which depicts an Indigenous leader who supposedly sold land for a change of clothing, is one example. The Hannah Duston statue in Haverhill has also been a source of debate. It depicts a 17th century New English woman who, after her capture by Native Americans, led the killing and scalping of 10 sleeping Native Americans, the majority of them children, women and elderly.
Of course, similar discussions occur on a national level about how we remember the past. Just take the recently abolished Mississippi state flag, which included Confederate symbolism, or the debates surrounding controversial statues of Confederate soldiers.
What has been limited in the past to street demonstrations is now a legislative priority for Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker. He recently created a Special Commission Relative to the Seal and Motto of the Commonwealth. According to the website describing the special commissions first hearing, held on July 19, 2021, it is charged with not only making recommendations for a revised or new design of the seal and motto but also with creating an educational program on the history and meaning of the seal and motto.
Bakers initiative underscores Native American groups efforts to bring about legislative change and create more respectful representations of Indigenous peoples. But the recommendations of the all-volunteer committee were due on Oct. 1, 2021. To this date, they have not been submitted, and it is unclear when they will be.
More public education
While Native American activists and allies are keenly aware of this disturbing New England history, my experience as a public speaker and scholar of Native American history suggests many residents in Massachusetts have little awareness of the seals symbolism and the regions past.
Given this reality, the state has another option in addition to legislative acts provide more resources for public education, including historic signage and markers in public spaces.
Separate from the commission, a campaign to educate the public might prove to be a more constructive way to tell the story of Native Americans as well as English colonists. This could be achieved through partnerships among Native American and educational nonprofit organizations and primary, secondary and university educators, as well as the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Through public talks and teacher workshops, of which I have given close to 20 in 2021, I have seen a need for a more expansive initiative. Many Massachusetts residents are interested in learning more about the legacies of New England colonization and how they affected Native Americans. More important, educators are eager for resources to teach this difficult subject.
In Massachusetts, and throughout the United States, providing resources to eliminate demeaning depictions of Native Americans would go a long way toward critically coming to terms with the countrys violent past.

A tour of the public art in Minneapolis’ new Public Service Building – MinnPost
Posted: at 9:44 pm
When Minneapolis city employees come back to work on January 10th currently the plan, at least in a hybrid sense, depending on the department theyll be in for quite a treat. Many of the thousands of people who (theoretically) work in the brand new ten-story Public Service Building covering everything from 311 to Public Works to the Police, have never even seen their new offices. In place of being scattered all around office sites in a variety of downtown spots, theyll all be centralized. And waiting for them will be the largest debut of city public art in Minneapolis history.
We hardly ever work indoors, admitted Mary Altman, the citys Public Art Administrator, describing the citys other public artworks. Usually all of our art has to handle freeze-thaw conditions, and be planned around what it would be like to be hit by a car or plow or lawn mower.
Thats not the case for the $2M of artworks that are literally embedded in the new building, funded through the citys public art ordinance that dedicates 1.5% of capital budgets to art.

Instead, in this building theyve been able to commission and install a wide variety of intricate, detailed, and car-free sculptures explicitly designed to bring architecture, employee wellness and aesthetics together in the new city building.
There are three basic types of work: artist-designed bird safe glass, murals designed on glass, and elevator lobby ceilings, said Altman. Its been really wonderful to be able to do this. This is a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity.
A historic artwork forms the eye catching centerpiece of the entire building: the 26-foot tall foot Seal of Minneapolis, embedded in the center of the wall welcoming visitors.
As far as seals go, its one of the better ones, certainly superior to the blatantly racist state seal or the epically boring seal of St. Paul. Not trying to do too much, the logo depicting St. Anthony Falls at its industrial zenith, under the overdone slogan, En Avant. (French for forward.)
Visible even from across the street, the seal is a remarkable bit of historic preservation. It wasonce part of the old Minneapolis Auditorium, the massive historic home to the Minneapolis Lakers, that lasted from 1927 to 1989. It was embedded in the wall there, five stories over the sidewalk, whereupon a Minneapolis city employee named Greg Goeke saved it from the rubble, and kept it preserved in a farm field for three decades.

According to Altman, many of the sixteen artists whose work is now in the building used the seal as a partial inspiration for their pieces. For most or all of them, the triumphalist European-American industrial vision became something to respond to, a foil for a new vision of 21st century Minneapolis.

Working for government has a reputation of being a bit boring and repetitive. And If you spend enough time among the cubicles of municipal offices as I have you realize that the stereotype is not a complete fabrication; processing yard setback permits, applying municipal tax codes or signing off on bridge engineering is not exactly sexy work.
Perhaps thats why so much of the new art in the Public Service Building is dynamic: it changes throughout the day and throughout the year, as if its intentionally designed to alleviate tedium.
Take for example, the centerpiece of the new works, the massive sculpture mounted over the shiny white terra-cotta floors that squeak with every step through the lobby. Called Current Conditions, Tristan Al-Haddads elaborate ever-changing piece is the most expensive piece in the building, and one of two new artworks directly tied to live feeds of data. In thiscase, the LED lights embedded within the moving resin depict the current temperature and humidity, arranged in a time series that visualizes the data going back six months.
MinnPost photo by Bill Lindeke
There are people in this building that are here every day, for decades, explained Altman, who, as a twenty-year-veteran of city government, should know. They see it all the time [so] the art work cant be one a-ha moment, its got to be something where the employees continue to see new things over time. A lot of the artists are doing things in their works where theres either great attention to detail or something that really captivates people for the duration of their experience here.
To that end, Al-Haddads sculpture is likely never the same twice. It slowly reconfigures itself throughout the day, as well as performing specific programs at sunrise and sunset. (These days, during the winter solstice, it would be possible for a city worker to be around for both of these events.) It even provides an artistic silver lining to those unfortunate souls who have to work late.
At night, it plays a deep indigo program, described Altman. The terrazzo just picks it up and its stunning; its really fun to be here at night.
Article continues after advertisement
Believe it or not, the most fun artworks of the new building are the ceilings of the elevator lobbies. Each of the seven accessible floors has a distinctly lit installation that, when viewed in combination with the others, turns the building itself into an immersive experience thats at least as good as that cloying Van Gogh exhibit that was making the rounds.
In other words, when youre getting off the elevator on your way around the office, be sure to look up.
We gave the artists a foot of depth to work with and a requirement to use programmable LED lights, explained Altman. They had to follow building code, which was complicated, but those were the basic parameters.
Along the way, the artists interviewed workers in the different departments to get a sense of the kind of jobs they had, what sort of space they would appreciate, and a history of their fields.
The result is seven distinct, creative spaces that make a visit to the Public Service Building a fun adventure for a visitor. In this way, its not unlike the lobby of the now-90-year-old St. Paul City Hall, where the 18 stories all have different types of wood wall paneling.
City of Minneapolis
But the longer you gaze, the more you begin to realize the cutout images are a pop-up book in reverse. Moving around the floor, and adjusting your angle, iconic Minneapolis shapes reveal themselves. Its a fun game to wait for the elevator as the Stone Arch Bridge, Princes silhouette, or [gulp] the Twitter icon reveal themselves in the chaos.
Many of the others are more subtle. I particularly liked the 3rd floor lobby, a work tied to the currents and water levels of the Mississippi River at St. Anthony Falls, and the 10th floor lobby, designed by Rory Erler Wakemup, made to mimic the night sky. Each floor provides something different, full of changing LED details worth noticing.
Article continues after advertisement
There are different moods, said Altman, describing the installation by Christopher Harrison on the 4th Floor. Here, the artist wanted to create a tranquil piece, because they are aware of the stress that employees are under. 311 is a particularly stressful job. Youll see on the police floor on the health floor that was a goal to support employee wellness, and create places that are more tranquil.
Custom murals on large glass walls in each floors conference room are another key part of the buildings artistic environment. Made from layers of semi-opaque vinyl in different colors applied to the glass walls, they give the rooms an inside-outside dynamism.
The murals are all different and full of rewarding detail, made more so by their two-sided nature where one side of the wall bursts with color while the other retains a more monochromatic effect. The one that most appealed to my urbanist sensibilities was on the 4th floor, a work named Power and Play by Witt Siasoco. Drawing on the the color palette from Ralph Rapsons Riverside Plaza, it shows a palimpsest of maps, the rivers silhouette and images of people playing different games.
City of Minneapolis
City of Minneapolis
Getting the technique correct was a trial-and-error and, in some cases, required four prototype tests to ensure the application reflected the artists vision.
Taken as a whole, the new building feels a bit like a science-fiction set, one from films like Her or Star Trek. The new building has smart temperature and light controls, and even the artworks hanging from the ceiling seem alive, changing to reveal the humidity or the sunset or the mood of the city itself. But as COVID-safe television screens wait for members of the public, and a robotic but calming female voice calls out Now serving T-zero seven four two seven five, I wonder if this fiction is entirely utopian.
I dont really wish for anyone to have to apply for a building renovation permit or tax assessment variance. But if you do, I recommend savoring your time in the new Public Service Building. Replacing a parking ramp, it well deserves its architectural and design accolades. Walking through the doors onto the large mat, embossed with san-serif CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS lettering, feels like finally stepping into a better future that we all know that city government can one day become.

The Best Bags and Backpacks Released in 2021 – gearpatrol.com
Posted: December 17, 2021 at 10:51 am
This story is part of our end-of-year series This Year in Gear, rounding up the most notable releases of 2021.
Bags, even more so than most clothing, serve a function to stow, protect and transport our EDC (and then some). As such, they have to really work, meaning they can't falter at the first sign of some of additional weight or melt whenever mild weather turns sour. All of the bags below emphasize function first and foremost but balance form just the same. TLDR: These look good but the get the job done. (That's why they're the best bags of the year.)
Billykirk's No. 237 Briefcase was recently redesigned to be bigger, feature leather handles and have brass feet so it stands upright on its own. Ultimately, these tweaks turned a bag we already loved into a bag we really, really love.
Price: $725

This Sealand Crossbody Bag is big enough to carry your EDC, like a phone, wallet and a few keys plus AirPods and a vaccine card. The bag is water repellent, too, which means your valuables won't get wet.

San Francisco bag brand Joshuvela's new tote, the Palermo, is built from 24-ounce cotton canvas with a 10-ounce cotton canvas liner. There are six pockets on the inside and all of the trim is vegetable-tanned Italian leather. It's luxe while retaining an air of simplicity.

State's simple Fanny Pack is a favorite of mine, because it's simple. So many bags are loaded with unnecessary pockets, branding, mesh buckets and straps that they become cumbersome to carry. This iteration has two zipper pockets for safe keeping but nothing extra.
Price: $85

Featuring a bag made from nylon and straps made from rubberized mesh webbing, the Craighill Arris Tote is an easy, do-it-all tower for getting groceries, going to the park or the beach, eventually.

Montblanc and Public School New York by Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow (the designer spearheading Tom Brady's forthcoming clothing line, BRADY) dropped a collection of bags and luggage this week. The entire line is made from ECONYL, a sustainable fabric sewn from material waste. There are leather accents and luxe features, but it's environmentally friendly for the most part.

Fanny pack not for you? Tote bag too much? Garbstore and Porter's collaborative Sacoche Hour Bag blends the best of both, resulting in a carry-all that has enough room for the things you'd usually put in your pockets but not much more. Impossible to weigh down, easy to wear.

I've preached about the versatility of Herschel's insulated Alexander Tote before. I even called it the best beach bag you can buy. Now, it's gotten even better. This revamped version comes cut from Surfnyl, Birdwell's proprietary nylon fabric (which they use for their boardshorts). It also features a luggage trolley strap, utility handles, a zippered internal pocket, and a classic camo liner.

Save The Bays Seal Tours, Seal and Rose Island Tours return to Newport on Saturday – What’sUpNewp
Posted: December 3, 2021 at 5:00 am
On December 4, a Save The Bay education vessel will depart from Bowens Ferry Landing in Newport Harbor, marking the organizations 21st season of Seal Tours in the City by the Sea.
Between December and April, the environmental nonprofit organization will run two types of tours around the harbor: a one-hour, boat-based seal tour, and a two-hour cruise including a stop at the Rose Island lighthouse grounds. These one-of-a-kind excursions offer passengers of all ages the opportunity to experience the beauty of Newport Harbor, catch spectacular views of the Claiborne Pell Bridge, learn the history of the harbor, and spot Rhode Islands state marine mammal, the harbor seal, in its natural environment. Tours will be held on weekends and public school holidays and vacation days December 2021-April 2022.
Harbor seals are the most common marine mammal in New England, said Save The Bay Captain Eric Pfirrmann in a statement. At one time, their population was in steady decline due to human activities, but the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 helped reverse the trend. Following the guidelines of the MMPA, we make sure that our tours stay at a safe distance so that we dont disrupt these amazing animals, but we do provide guests with binoculars so they can see the seals in perfect detail!
While we do see different seal species in Narragansett Bay, we can identify a harbor seal because they are roughly human-sized, with a cute puppy-dog face. We usually spot them resting hauled out on rocks or in a bottling position, where they float upright like a glass bottle.
For over two decades, Save The Bay has offered Seal Tours and Nature Cruises during the regions cooler months when harbor seals migrate south into local waters following their food supply. Save The Bays education vessels allow guests to observe winter seals and other wildlife in their natural habitat, all while benefiting the nonprofits mission to protect and improve Narragansett Bay.
Save The Bays one-hour Seal Tours run most weekends and during school vacations. Ticket prices are: $22 per adult; $17 for Save The Bay members, seniors, and children ages 3-12; and children under 3 years of age are free. The two-hour Seal and Rose Island Tours run one or two times a month and ticket prices are: $55 per adult; $45 for Save The Bay members, seniors, and children ages 3-12; and children under 3 years of age are free. Tour schedules, tickets, gift certificates and more information are available by calling 401-203-SEAL(7325) or visitingsavebay.org/seals.
Save The Bay will offer outdoor tours when Rhode Islands COVID-19 state positivity rate is at or below five percent. Reservations are strongly recommended, and passengers must verbally attest to a COVID-19 screening prior to boarding. Per Center for Disease Control and Rhode Island Department of Health guidelines, masks are not required for vaccinated individuals but are highly recommended for unvaccinated individuals.A complete overview of Save The Bays Seal Tour COVID-19 policies can be found atsavebay.org/seals.
