How Artificial Intelligence is Learning to Have Fun – Devdiscourse
Posted: September 1, 2021 at 12:40 am
Artificial Intelligence technology has been moving at an almost alarming rate for the past few years. We only have to think back a decade or so ago to reach a time when the very idea of artificial intelligence was totally futuristic. We imagined having humanoid servants running our houses for us, or uprising and taking over the world. As it happens, we thankfully haven't got to that stage just yet, but one thing that most laymen wouldn't have predicted is that by 2020, artificial intelligence would be having what can only be described as fun.
The idea of having fun is such a human concept that it's incredible to think that AI has progressed that far, but it certainly has. Whole areas of study exist in this area now, enough to make it a genuine job prospect for many. Here are some of the things that AI has been doing to unwind in its spare time.
Just last year the NTM Las Vegas artificial intelligence was learning how to have fun with a game of European Roulette. Roulette is a hugely popular game that can either be accessed online, or in-person in casino settings. In this instance, the robot was playing online, placing bets on red or green only. The robot was about as successful as a human would be, but it would be interesting to see how it performed if it was allowed the full range of possible bets.
An AI that has also been having fun with casino games comes from DeepStack. This team created AI that learned how to play poker and could win with regularity against professional poker players. Not only did the AI perform well in all of its tests, but the more it played, the better it got. This shows that the AI is capable of learning on the job, so if it keeps this hobby up, who knows which poker tournament it might win in the future!

Art is a topic within the Artificial intelligence realm that fascinates so many people. One of the wonderful things about art is that it is subjective and it connects us to other people in an emotional way. The idea of a computer program creating art of its own might seem cheap to some of us, but when you think about the way that AI learns to make art, the waters become muddied. A cooperative in Shoreditch, London came together to teach an AI how to create 'good' art. They showed the artificial intelligence of human art from the span of around 1500 years. As anyone who's been to art school will know, that is exactly how trained artists learn.
Once it has viewed the artworks and taken inspiration from the ones that appealed to it, artificial intelligence began to create pieces of its own. It took elements in the art movements that evoked emotion and managed to create a style that was complete of its own. These works are pleasant to look at, with interesting compositions and rich colour palettes. To the untrained eye, it would be absolutely impossible to know that they were created by artificial intelligence rather than a human being. The makers are selling the works, each one being a totally unique piece and available for around $150.
One of life's simple pleasures is sitting down on a deckchair, in a sunny garden with a cold drink and a great book. So many of us choose reading as our preferred way to relax and it's no surprise, it is wonderful. Being able to escape into a fantasy world, conjured up by a great mind is one of the simple joys of being human, so, naturally, artificial intelligence wanted to know what all of that was about. Some of the reading that artificial intelligence has been doing has been with the aim of being able to provide humans with a condensed version, as in the work of SummarizeBot. Other artificial intelligence has been reading books, plays and websites with the aim of being able to write in their style. Some of the outcomes have been nothing short of hilarious, but some pieces have been terrifyingly realistic.

Ederson, Dias, and More- How to Effectively Beat the Pep Roulette in FPL – EssentiallySports
Posted: August 22, 2021 at 3:24 pm
The English Premier League is one of the most followed football competitions in the world. In the same vein, Fantasy Premier League is a platform for people to become real-life managers in setting teams up. Moreover, it even adds to the excitement of the league with fantasy managers battling it out in private leagues. As the new season begins, fans take a lot of time to set up a team in FPL. With only 100 pounds to spend, extensive research goes into each detail.

One of the biggest headaches that smartphone managers face is Manchester City. The firepower they possess poses a dilemma for players because of Pep Guardiolas incessant rotations. So how do you beat the chip and chop of Pep?

Picking the right players is important. The Citizens possess so many gifted players it becomes a headache for managers to pick the team. But, there are many players Guardiola keeps in his regular team and that can solve all the problems while selecting players for the Fantasy Premier League.
The most obvious pick would be Kevin De Bruyne. Costing at around 12.0, he is the go-to man of Pep and a favorite for FPL players. Guaranteeing assists and goals, KDB enters many teams because of his productivity. A valiant performer on the pitch, he is the chief set-piece taker for City providing enough offensive arsenal for both Pep and FPL managers.
Secondly, Ruben Dias enters the list of must-take City players. The defender has been a stalwart for City last season leading them to the Premier League title. Costing at around 6.0, he may be a tad costly, compared to getting fullbacks at a cheaper price or the same. However, Dias is a starter for City and their brilliant defense practically guarantees clean sheets. Plus, he chips in with some goals as well.

The next player will be Ederson. He is the ultimate Pep Guardiola player. No other goalkeeper is as good as him in picking a pass out of from the back. An incredible kicker of the ball, Ederson costs 6.0 and is a 100 percent starter for City. Barring any injury, Ederson will be a good signing for managers because of the clean sheets, and audaciously, maybe the odd assist.

After scoring 13 goals and providing 2 assists last season, Ilkay Gundogan has become a regular starter for Pep. Costing at around 7.4, Ilkay is a good signing for players who look forward to a decent selection with a moderate price. His offensive output has improved while becoming a surprise goal scorer last season. With KDB out injured most of the time, he provided the creative spark for City, last time around. However, with the signing of Jack Grealish, Ilkay is expected to sit back and dictate their tempo from the middle.
Finally, enter Grealish. With a price tag of 8.0, many players would be skeptical about his introduction to the team. Breaking the 100 million transfer record, City are going to start him. Although there are many players in City, Grealishs fluidic movement, technical dribbling, and chance creation are why Pep signed him for. And he is going to start for City.

Of all the players in Manchester City, these five players may be Peps favorites considering the output they give him. For FPL managers, picking City players is a burden because of Guardiolas rotation policy. Despite that, these players can be the ones to count on.

Ready for another spin of Potter roulette as Brighton host Watford? – We Are Brighton
Posted: at 3:24 pm
During their 120 year existence, Brighton & Hove Albion have played Watford more than any other team. There have been more than 150 meetings between the clubs, which makes it fitting that this most familiar of foes provide the opposition as the Amex returns to full capacity for the first time in 18 months.
Both sides come into the match having tasted victory on the opening day of the campaign. For the Albion, that came at Burnley once Graham Potter had sobered up after 45 minutes of experimenting with a 4-1-4-1 formation featuring Pascal Gross at left back and Adam Webster at right back.
Having had three meaningless pre-season friendlies to test out this and any other whacky ideas that the Brighton manager might have formulated, it seemed ridiculous to start experimenting the first time that actual Premier League points were on the line. That is Potter for you.
Once he realised the error of his ways and reverted to a 3-4-1-2 and the radical concept of using players in their actual positions, Brighton were miles better in the second half and ended up walking away with a 2-1 win having gone into the interval 1-0 behind.
Watford meanwhile were busy picking up an impressive 3-2 win over an Aston Villa side who are many peoples dark horses for a top six finish this season.
Villa fans expect even better, believing that their 1996 Coca Cola Cup win makes them the biggest club in the country and that they therefore should be challenging for the title (and that Yves Bissouma would walk over broken glass to play for them if they put in a bid).
Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed the Hornets bringing Villa down a peg or two last week. That result does though highlight that Watford at home may not be as straightforward a match as many Brighton fans are expecting.
Watford this seasonWatford are back in the Premier League after a one-season absence having finished as runners up in the Championship last season. Their instant return was not really a surprise as they should never have been relegated from the top flight in the first place.
Owners the Pozzo Family sack managers as frequently as Dominic Raab refuses to make important phone calls and whilst most of the time they tend to get it right (unlike the Foreign Secretary), their decision to part ways with Nigel Pearson when outside of the relegation zone with two matches left to play was utterly bizarre.
The Hornets ended up finishing in the bottom three under caretaker Hayden Mullins and they rattled through a further two bosses in 2020-21, Vladimir Ivic being replaced by former Spain international Xisco back in December.
As for this season, the aim of the game for Watford has to be survival first and foremost. Like most other top flight clubs, they have had a very quiet transfer window so far with the only big name arrival being Josh King on a free from Everton.
If Brighton have designs of finishing higher up the Premier League table this season, then Watford at home is exactly the sort of game they have to be winning. It is also exactly the sort of game they have always struggled in under Potter, so who knows what will happen?
Team newsAaron Connolly is available again after what Potter described as a personal issue. It was reported on the Thursday before the trip to Burnley that Connolly had thrown a hissy fit when it was revealed that he would not be in the starting XI at Turf Moor and so Potter decided to leave him at home completely, the latest example of an appalling attitude from a player who thinks he is miles better than he is.
Quite why Connolly is getting chance after chance after chance when the likes of Jurgen Locadia and Florin Andone were jettisoned after the first time they erred is another Potter mystery.
It also makes the treatment of Percy Tau appear pretty shoddy, Tau having waited two-and-a-half years to get to England only for it to look like he is being flogged to Egypt within six months after less than 100 minutes of Premier League football to prove himself.
Elsewhere, Joel Veltman remains out because of a Covid close contact and Danny Welbeck and Tariq Lamptey are injured. Last week proved that trying to second guess what Potter may do is a futile exercise, so we are not even going to try. Just please, for the love of God, play Gross in his actual position.
For Watford, King could make his Hornets debut after missing the win over Villa with a groin problem. Xisco will be without Juraj Kucka, Ozan Tufan, Joao Pedro and Nathaniel Chalobah.
Key battlesCentral to Watford beating Villa was right winger Ismaila Sarr, which is bad news when Brighton do not currently have a natural left back in first team contention.
Sarr gave Matt Targett such a torrid time at Vicarage Road that Dean Smith decided to put him out of his misery and haul him at half time. If a genuine, Premier League standard left back could not cope with the Senegalese wide man then how will one of Potters square-pegs-in-round holes manage?
This is why we again find ourselves contemplating a little visit to church on route to the Amex to pray that Gross is not at left back.
Solly March seems the best choice to fulfil the role of dealing with Sarr but he is much more comfortable going forward.
90 minutes against Sarr will be a real test of the defensive side of Marchs game and could go a long way towards deciding if the Albion make it two wins from two.
Recent formBrighton have been in good form over their past six matches, winning three and losing two. Those victories were not exactly routine either; Burnley is a tough place to go, Manchester City are the reigning champions who can buy their way to the title every season and The Leeds United are the biggest football club in the universe.
This though is the Albion paradox. Brighton play well and record better results against the stronger teams and struggle against the likes of Watford.
The Seagulls won only one game against a side in the bottom half of the table at the Amex last season when beating Newcastle United 3-0 in April so whilst recent form might look pleasant, form at home against fellow strugglers is ghastly.
Something of a mixed bag for the Hornets although once they won promotion via their 1-0 win over Milllllllllllllllll on April 24th, there was bugger all to play for as Norwich were already miles clear at the top leaving the the Championship title out of grasp.
Interestingly, Watford have won only one of their last four away matches and that came against a Canaries side with nothing to play for.
Defeats against Brentford, arch rivals Luton and a draw with Neil Warnocks Middlesbrough suggest that Watford struggle on the road potentially good news for Brighton.
Last time we metIt was February 2020 and Brighton were slap bang in the middle of that terrible winter run of two wins from 18 games which dragged them into the relegation battle when Watford came to the Amex.
Things nearly got even worse for Potter as the Hornets took a 1-0 lead through Abdoulaye Doucoure after a typical attempt at overplaying by the Albion went awry, Aaron Mooy (remember him?) lost possession and the visitors broke to score.
Brighton then had to rely on a 78th minute own goal from Adrian Mariappa to ensure they did not suffer an embarrassing home defeat, the Watford defender rather generously lashing home an Alireza Jahanbakhsh cross under no pressure as it finished 1-1.
A miserable night at the Amex but the WAB Team did at least have the comfort of having watched it through a blur of strong Belgian beer from a bar in Gent whilst on a stag do. Amongst the items lost that evening were a mobile phone, an expensive coat and a lot of mens dignity.
Brighton v Watford head-to-headThere have been 155 meetings between Brighton and Watford across 10 different competitions since 1904. The Albion lead the head-to-head with 45 wins, the Hornets have been victorious on 36 occasions and there have been 35 draws.
Part of the reason for the clubs being such regular foes is because Brighton and Watford drew each other for four consecutive seasons in the FA Cup during the 1920s, the odds of which are over nine million to one.
Often, these ties required replays which boots the number of FA Cup meetings between Seagulls and Hornets to 10. With it now being over 10 years since the Albion faced Watford in the FA Cup Gus Poyet He Who Must Not Be Named overseeing a shock 1-0 win at Vicarage Road in 2010-11 the law of averages suggests we will be meeting in the third round of the competition come January. Which will be nice.
A reason why Brighton will winConfidence should be running high amongst the Brighton squad following the 2-1 victory at Burnley and the manner it was delivered in. Potter has also learnt an important lesson within 45 minutes of the 2021-22 season, namely that he needs to use players in their actual positions.
A reason why Watford will winWatford might not win, but they probably will not lose either. Sheffield United. West Brom. Fulham. Burnley. Crystal Palace. Southampton. Wolves. Aston Villa. All came to the Amex last season and all left with something to show for their efforts.
Brighton v Watford bettingThe bookies have Brighton as odds-on favourites to beat Watford, which seems about as good value as the 37 billion spent on a Track & Trace app which did not actually work.
Last seasons record against clubs in the bottom half of the table at the Amex suggests a draw is likely, available at a best priced 13/5.
In terms of player betting, Neal Maupay started last season with a bang and his goals tend to come in fits and starts. It would not be a surprise to see him on target again following his equaliser at Turf Moor and he can be found at 28/17 to score anytime.
Tau at 11/5 is probably one to avoid whilst we have unfortunately been unable to find a market on what time Connolly is filmed getting into a fight in Shoosh! in the early hours of Sunday morning.
PredictionsPrediction of actual score: Brighton 1-1 WatfordPrediction of xG score: Watford 1.2 6.7 BrightonPrediction of first drunk meltdown: 3.01pm
(We predicted 3.05pm for the first drunken meltdown at Burnley but even that proved to be too conservative as it took James Tarkowski less than three minutes to give the Clarets the lead).

What is the High Rollers Room? Here’s which ‘Big Brother’ star earned the most ‘BB Bucks’ – MEAWW
Posted: at 3:24 pm
For the 'Big Brother' houseguests, the competition is definitely getting more challenging by the week. And with Christian Birkenberger gone, the question remains -- who will be the next target?
While the cookout alliance consisting of Kyland Young, Derek Frazier, Xavier Patter, Hannah Chaddha, Tiffany Mitchell and Azah Awasum has managed to keep themselves safe thus far, this week brings up a severe conflict of interest.

'Big Brother': Who won the 'Wild Card Challenge'? Winner bags safety until jury
With Kyland winning the second HoH, the cookout seemed to be slightly at odds ends. Azah hoped that Kyland would throw away the HoH contest, allowing her to keep Britini DAngelo safe, but he himself wanted to keep Sarah Beth Steagall safe. Meanwhile, Tiffany wants nothing more than to get rid of Sarah Beth, while Kyland had Claire Rehfuss, Tiffany's best friend, on his hit list. Kyland decided to put up Claire and Derek F for elimination, to get rid of Claire, seeing that he and Derek F decided that the latter would be a pawn.
While this situation did complicate things, the 'Big Brother' house threw another wrench in the players' plans. With the introduction of the High Rollers Room, each player was awarded a certain amount of BB Bucks, depending on the votes they got by the audience. Players with the highest votes were awarded $100 BB Bucks, those with the second-highest got $75 BB Bucks and finally there was a default amount of $50 awarded to the rest. Using their BB Bucks, each player could bet this cash and play three different games that came with 3 different powers.
The first was Veto Derby for $50, where a housemate can bet on a player competing in the next veto competition. If that player wins, the housemate earns a second veto.
Next was Chopping Block Roulette for $125 -- winning this game allows a houseguest to remove a nominee, and determine their replacement via a roulette wheel.
And finally, there was Coin of Destiny for $250, where the winner of yje game can overthrow the HoH with the flip of a coin. Should the player call the flip correctly, they will be crowned the new HoH.
With Brittni, Derek X and Derek F getting $100 BB Bucks each, fans were confused as to who was voting for Brittni. "No seriously who is voting for Derek f and Britani??? #bb23 #bigbrother" asked a fan. "Wait who gave Britain 100 BB bucks ?? Since when was she a fan fav Im confused #bb23 #BigBrother" tweeted another. "@CBSBigBrother You expecting us to believe that America voted for Britni? All it does is just make it painfully clear that you rig this shit #BigBrother #BB23" questioned a fan. "To whoever voted for Britni. May her ANNOYING butt go home this week. #BigBrother #BB23 @CBSBigBrother" agreed another.
Out of all the players, Kyland, Derek F, Claire and Sarah Beth were the only ones who managed to make it to the Veto Derby scoreboard, which allows them to bet on players during the next veto competition. With each of them planning their own agenda, fans will have to wait and see to find out who comes out on top!
Catch all the new episodes of 'Big Brother' on CBS every Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8/7c. For more information, check your local listings. If you don't have access to cable, there are a handful of streaming services such as AT & TV TV, fubo TV, and Hulu that offer CBS as a part of their channel lineup. For those based out of the United States, using a VPN will help your case.

Six T-Birds heading to NHL training… – Kent Reporter
Posted: at 3:24 pm
Six Kent-based Seattle Thunderbirds players will attend NHL training camps this fall.
The fact that we are sending more and more players to camps every year is an indication of the quality of scouting and development within our organization, said general manager Bil La Forge in an Aug. 18 T-Birds press release. The credit for this success is shared between our scouts, coaching staff and the hard work of the players. I am confident this number will continue to grow in the coming years.
The six T-Birds heading to camps that begin in mid-September are:
Center Matthew Rempe, New York Rangers camp. Rempe was selected by the Rangers in the 2020 NHL Draft, round 6, 165th overall.
Defenseman Tyrel Bauer, Winnipeg Jets camp. Bauer was selected by the Jets in the 2020 NHL Draft, round 6, 164th overall.
Left wing Conner Roulette, Dallas Stars camp. Roulette was selected by the Stars in the 2021 NHL Draft, round 4, 111th overall.
Left wing Lucas Ciona, Calgary Flames camp. Ciona was selected by the Flames in the 2021 NHL Draft, round 6, 173rd overall.
Defenseman Jeremy Hanzel, Tampa Bay Lightning camp as a free agent.
Center Henrik Rybinski, Edmonton Oilers camp as a free agent.
The T-Birds start the 2021-2022 Western Hockey League regular season on the road against the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The home opener for Seattle is at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, against the Winterhawks at accesso ShoWare Center.

How to Find the Best Real Money Roulette in Las Vegas, Nevada – BestUSCasinos.org
Posted: August 18, 2021 at 7:50 am
Despite being well over 200 years old, roulette continues to be highly popular in casinos. Case in point, many Las Vegas casinos offer this classic table game. In fact, Sin City offers so many roulette tables that you might not know where to begin.
If youre looking for some help in finding quality Vegas roulette games, then you should definitely read the following guide. It discusses what qualities to look for in a game along with the top Vegas roulette casinos.
The two main aspects that you want to consider in a roulette variation include the odds and stakes. You can see why both of these aspects are important below.
As can be seen, French Roulette provides the best chance of winning. European Roulette comes in second with its 2.70% house edge.
The American wheel, meanwhile, is the worst of the bunch. Unfortunately, its also the most prevalent version in Sin City.
The good news is that Las Vegas offers all three of the roulette games covered above. So, that means you should head straight for the French Roulette tables, right?
If only it were this easy. While some Vegas casinos are willing to offer French rules, they do sell at extremely high stakes. Youll end up wagering as much as $300 per spin in some casinos.
As Ill cover later, you can find a cheap European Roulette game thats the best in the city. Other than this, youll have to play American Roulette for low stakes.
Of course, you might opt for the French game if youre up for betting big. If not, youll need to play either American or European roulette.
Most Vegas casinos are relatively the same when it comes to roulette. They offer American wheels with stakes ranging from $5 to $500.
However, some standard options do exist. The following casinos are worthwhile due to their favorable roulette odds and/or low stakes.
The Plaza offers a special combination of cheap stakes and the European wheel. You can play the European Roulette game here for as little as $10.
As you can imagine, cheap European roulette draws many players. With that said, the lone table can get quite crowded.
Nevertheless, this game is worth checking out if you want a combination of great odds and a low minimum bet. If you get particularly hot and feel like upping the ante, you can bet as much as $1,000 per spin.
Like Plaza, the Cromwell also offers European roulette. The difference, though, is that you must bet at least $25 to play here.
$25 may not sound like very cheap stakes. However, the Cromwells European game is actually the second cheapest in Vegas.
Treasure Island Hotel & Casino is the only casino that provides French Roulette with under a $100 minimum wager. You can enjoy the highest-paying variation for $50 a spin.
Of course, $50 a spin isnt cheapeven when concerning French Roulette. Nevertheless, its the most reasonable French table in town.
Club Fortune doesnt offer the European or French variation. What it does have, though, is the cheapest roulette stakes in town.
This casino features an American table with $2 stakes. That said, you can play for next to nothing here.
Youve now seen which casinos are the best in terms of roulette. If youre looking for any additional advice for playing in Vegas, the following tips should help.
You cant do any better than the Plazas roulette game. It offers the best of both worlds with a 2.70% house edge and $1 minimum bet.
Simply put, you can play almost as cheaply as you would on an American wheel. The kicker, though, is that your odds of winning are twice as good.
You might also consider the Cromwells $25 European Roulette game. The stakes are five times as high as Plazas game, but at least theyre not totally in high-roller territory.
French Roulette will always give you the best chance to win on a per-dollar basis. After all, it features the lowest house edge at 1.35%.
However, its not the best option if youre a low-stakes player. The cheapest you can play this game is $50 at Treasure Island.
The only reason why you should consider playing French Roulette is if youre a high roller. This way, you can enjoy the best odds at the wagers youd be placing anyways.
Other than this instance, though, you should stick with either American or European roulette. Your theoretical losses will be lower with these games despite the inferior odds.
American Roulette is no doubt the worst game among the three covered so far. However, its still not that bad on the $5 tables.
Heres a comparison on theoretical losses between low-stakes American Roulette and high-stakes French Roulette:
French
American
Triple Zero Roulette is one Vegas game that hasnt been discussed yet. It features 39 pockets, including a single, double, and triple zero.
This game seems interesting from the perspective that it gives you a new way to play. However, its awful with regard to the house edge.
Triple zero roulette features a 7.69% house advantage (3/39). This is actually one of the worst house edges in all of Las Vegas.
When you visit Las Vegas, youre likely looking to do more than just play roulette. You should have a separate budget for casino games and entertainment.
If you have $2,000 in free money for the trip, then you might want to put $600 of this amount solely towards gambling.
You can then put the other $1,400 towards entertainment, food, and any other expenses. Separating your funds like this ensures that you wont blow everything during a bad night of roulette.
The Plaza is king when it comes to Vegas roulette. This casino features European Roulette at just $5 stakes.
The Cromwell also offers European Roulette at fairly reasonable stakes. You can play the game here for $25 per spin.
Treasure Island is the best with regard to French Roulette. It offers the cheapest French stakes at $50 per round.
You can find $5 American tables all over the town. As covered before, your theoretical losses wont be too bad with low-stakes American Roulette.
Assuming youre hoping to play as cheaply as possible, then El Cortez and Club Fortune should be on your radar. Both casinos offer American stakes as low as $2.

Covid testing: the great new game of holiday roulette – The Week UK
Posted: at 7:50 am
Like many people, Ive spent a lot of this year playing the great new game of holiday roulette, said Rachel Cooke in The Guardian. It began in January when a group of us gambled on booking a house in rural France. Our bet appeared to pay off last week when France was put back on the amber list, meaning that fully vaccinated Britons can visit the country without having to quarantine on their return. But my friends and I are now caught up in another game: negotiating our way through the confusing rules on Covid tests.
Its a complex business, said Janet Street-Porter in The Independent. For most purposes, cheap lateral flow tests are deemed sufficient. But even fully vaccinated people have to take more expensive PCR tests two days after returning to the UK from amber and green countries (and those returning from Spain now need to have a pre-flight PCR test as well). Is the Prime Ministers long-term plan to make foreign holidays so unattractive that we give up, stay at home and spend our cash in UK PLC, propping up Rishis sagging coffers?
The testing regime is certainly chaotic, said Charlotte Lytton in The Daily Telegraph. The Governments website features a list of hundreds of private PCR test providers charging wildly different rates: on one day last week, the prices ranged from 23.99 to 575 for the same test.
Tales abound of people ordering home testing kits that never arrive, or of booking virtual appointments that dont happen. Many others have been sent result certificates that are either riddled with errors or too late to stop people with Covid from spreading it, or to catch flights. Tests returned by travellers after their trips were recently pictured piling up and spilling out onto the street at drop-off points belonging to the operator Randox.
Ministers have justified their insistence on PCR tests on the basis that these more sophisticated tests involve gene sequencing that can help identify troubling new variants from abroad, said the Daily Mail. But that argument has been blown out of the water by the recent revelation that only 5% of the tests are actually being sent for analysis.
Its good that the Government has partially simplified the travel system by scrapping the amber-plus list and that it ditched the idea of a new amber watch category but it now needs to go further. At the very least, PCR tests should be price-capped and made VAT-free. It would be better, though, to make lateral flow tests the norm, at least for double-jabbed travellers. Best of all would be to follow the lead of France and the other European nations that now allow fully vaccinated arrivals to enter their country without proof of a negative test of any sort.

Cheese Curds: When playing roster roulette, its a good idea to bet on Henry Black – Acme Packing Company
Posted: at 7:50 am
If you talk to an NFL coach about a young player coming off their rookie season, they will often mention the year two jump.
Thats the hopeful increase in performance as well as the decrease in the speed of the NFL game for them after whats usually an up-and-down first season.
For Green Bay Packers safety Henry Black, he could be in for such a sophomore season. After a forced fumble that all but sealed the game against the Houston Texans, Black was eventually added to the active roster from the practice squad in December.
He enters year two looking to become a solid backup behind Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage and much like receiver Amari Rodgers, Black will have a former Packer in his corner (except in Rodgers case the former part became current when the Packers traded for Randall Cobb).
That Packer for Black is Tramon Williams, who Black worked out with when he was in high school in 2013 and kept in contact with since. They actually got to be teammates when Williams returned to Green Bay one last time before the NFC Championship last season.
With Williams now retired, its up to Black to maintain that legacy and would anyone really get against him at this point?
Safety Henry Black impresses Packers with his maturity: Hes beyond his yearsPackersNews.com (subscription)
Coming in as a rookie and already being described as professional is high praise and a lesson Black learned from Williams all those years ago. Dont be surprised if that leads to a long NFL career for Black even if its not in Green Bay.
Five things learned at Packers training camp Aug. 12Packers.com
The Packers saw a lot of players return to practice yesterday ahead of tomorrows preseason opener. It will give them ample opportunity to see as many people on the 90-man roster (entrenched starters excluded of course) as possible.
Packers TE Josiah Deguara looks fantastic in return to practicePackers Wire
Deguara was an interesting pick when he was selected in 2020 but his rookie season was derailed by injury. He looks to be a classic H-back and how Matt LaFleur utilizes him is something to watch this preseason.
You guys know hes younger than me, right?: Matt LaFleur and Arthur Smith exchange playful jabsESPN
I love a good beef between coaches, even when its just playful. For his part, LaFleur owned the younger Falcons coach with a crack at Smiths hair color after LaFleur was accused of spending too much time in front of a mirror.

Dont let anyone tell you otherwise: penmanship is important. Just dont use it to rob a bank.

Coloradans Getting Third Dose Of COVID Vaccine Say They Feel More Protected Than Ever – CBS Denver
Posted: at 7:50 am
LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4) Some of the first Coloradans to get a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine say they feel more protected than ever before from the deadly virus. Coloradans who are immunocompromised have been granted permission to get a third dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines in order to increase the efficacy of the vaccines. Those considered healthy have not been granted authorization for so-called booster shots as of the posting of this article.
I have absolutely gotten the COVID vaccine. My first, my second and now my third, said Betsy Craig, a Northern Colorado resident living with Scleroderma.
Craig was diagnosed in 2005 with Scleroderma and was only given 18 months to survive. However, a stem cell transplant helped her regain longevity and a mostly normal lifestyle.
However, viruses ranging from the common flu to COVID-19 pose a real threat to her life.
Because of her weakened immune system, Craigs two doses of vaccine did not give her the roughly 95% efficacy which most vaccinated people with two doses have. So, the CDC and FDA approved people like Craig to receive a third dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine to increase their protection.
I called the third dose liquid gold, because to me it is. It is the closest thing to protection to keep me breathing, Craig told CBS4s Dillon Thomas.
Dr. Thomas Campbell, Chief Clinical Research Officer for UCHealth, said the vaccines are effective but will need boosters over time.
The primary series we currently do of two doses doesnt work well enough, Campbell said.
Campbell said, once approved by the FDA, vaccinated Americans will likely need to receive routine booster shots to continue to maintain high rates of immunity.
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines can protect people up to 96%. Compared to the annual flu shot, which only protects people about 50% of the time from the flu, the vaccines are incredibly effective.
However, like other vaccines, they can lose strength over time. Tetanus shots need boosting every 10 years, while flu shots often need to be boosted every year.
Preliminary research shows the COVID-19 Pfizer and Moderna vaccines will likely need boosters every eight months.
Campbell said, currently, only the immunocompromised need their third doses of the vaccines.
Those individuals never achieve adequate immunity with just two doses. They need a third dose just to get to adequate immunity, Campbell said. That is in contrast to people who are otherwise healthy, they respond well to the two-dose series. But, we know from immerging data, the protection wains over time. This doesnt mean the vaccine doesnt work. It just means that it can work better if we give it a third dose.
When getting a third dose of vaccine Coloradans will not have to return to the place they received their initial doses. Experts say there wont be an issue with availability due to demand as we saw when the vaccines first surfaced.
Also, while highly recommended, it isnt required for people to get the same type of vaccine they did for the first two. Campbell said Pfizer and Moderna can be mixed over time if absolutely necessary.
While the FDA works on rolling out booster shots for regularly healthy people, Craig said she is thrilled to have more protection from the virus.
(Forgoing the third dose) is Russian roulette, and I am just not willing to play Russian roulette if I dont have to. It is just relief that I am not going to die if I get sick, Craig said.
