#16 Iowa 28, Wisconsin 7: Home Is Where The Heartland Is | Go Iowa Awesome – Go Iowa Awesome

Posted: at 8:14 am

Welcome home, Albert.

For the first time since 2015, Iowa beat Wisconsin to claim The Heartland Trophy and completea clean sweep of their rivalry games. Minnesota? Check. Nebraska? Check. Wisconsin? Finally -- check. The win was Iowa's sixth straight this season and finished off a regular season that started with heartbreak and frustration, but ended with bragging rights and some degree of satisfaction.

The first half of this game was, in truth, claw-your-eyes-out ugly. Iowa and Wisconsin traded punts with such fervor that you would have thought they were white elephant gifts that neither team was determined to take home. Wisconsin punted the ball six times before half; Iowa one-upped them by punting seven times. There was so much punting that we found ourselves researching the Big Ten's single-game punting records. After determining that the Big Ten's "most punts in a single game" record was likely out of reach (Michigan's Chuck Ortmann punted 24 times against Ohio State in 1950; the combined record for two teams is 45, set by Michigan and Ohio State in that same game), we were pleasantly surprised to note that Legendary Nile Kinnick still holds the Big Ten single game record for most punting yards -- 731 in an Iowa win (!) over Notre Dame in 1939.

The only offensive production in the first half came from Keith Duncan, who drilled two field goals to give Iowa a 6-0 lead. The first came in the first quarter, after Nick Niemann recovered a Wisconsin fumble at their 34-yard line. The Iowa offense went 20 plays in five yards before stalling out an settling for a 30-yard Duncan field goal. The second came right before halftime as Iowa put together a six-play, 36-yard drive (their longest of the half!) after the defense stopped Wisconsin on a 4th-and-1 from Iowa 31. Iowa was able to move the ball down the field thanks to a defensive pass interference call (that thankfully wiped out what would have been a truly hideous Spencer Petras interception), an 11-yard pass to Sam LaPorta, and a 20-yard screen pass to Tyler Goodson. Yes, Iowafinallycompleted a screen pass to a running back. 2020's full of surprises. Keith Duncan squeaked in a 45-yard field goal with a very friendly doink to give Iowa a 6-0 halftime lead.

In-between those two field goals was a lot of punting. Alotof punting. Here's a visual representation for you:

So. Many. Punts.

Thankfully the second half revealed that touchdowns were not, in fact, illegal and that -- excuse this mild heresy -- there's more to the game than just punting and defense.

Wisconsin threatened to get on the board right after half with their best offensive drive of the game to that point, driving 46 yards on nine plays. The Iowa defense stood firm at 3rd-and-2 from the Iowa 29, though, and forced the Badgers into a 47-yard field goal. That was important because a 46-yard field goal probably would have been worth three points. A 47-yard field goal try was worth none, though, as it fell just short.

Seeing a (semi-) competent offense on the field appeared to light a fire under Iowa's own offense as they put together their best drive of the game (by far), galloping down the field to cover 71 yards in five plays. Petras' passes found the right calibration (mostly) and he converted back-to-back throws to Brandon Smith and Ihmir Smith-Marsette for 14 and 38 yards, respectively, before going back to Smith-Marsette on third down for a beautiful touchdown catch. That snare, followed by a well-executed two-point conversion (again! for the third straight time this season! 2020's surreality remains untopped) pushed Iowa's lead to 14-0.

That 14-0 lead felt somewhat insurmountable with the way Iowa's defense was squeezing the life out of the hapless Badger offense, and it looked like everything was coming up Iowa when the defense forced Wisconsin into a three-and-out on the very next series. The only thing that Iowa had to do was avoid a costly turnover that gave Wisconsin points or outstanding field position.

Oops.

Charlie Jones has brought a daredevil approach to punt returns this season, generally to very good effect. His returns havehelped Iowa gain good field position and need shorter drives on offense to score points (always a welcome boost for this offense). But that devil-may-care approach has its risks, too, and they were exposed in painful fashion in the third quarter in a which a seemingly late decision to field a punt ended in an disastrous muff that was recovered by Wisconsin at the Iowa 25. He either needed to step up and fair catch the ball cleanly or back off and let Wisconsin down it. He chose a middle path instead and he chose... poorly. Two plays later Wisconsin was in the end zone and the control Iowa had over the game seemed to have evaporated in a flash.

When Iowa went three-and-out on their next offensive series (three plays for one yard, just phenomenal stuff), it was definitely approaching "hold your butts" territory. Fortunately, the Iowa defense is almost always there to bail out the Iowa offense and they did so again here, forcing a three-and-out and forcing another Badger punt after Chauncey Golston destroyed Graham Mertz on a third-down sack. The Iowa offense found its spark again (the spark turned out to be "get the ball to Smith-Marsette") and after a big 16-yard rush by Goodson, Petras hit a home run pass to ISM on play action for a 53-yard touchdown bomb that restored Iowa's two-touchdown lead. It really was magnificent:

Less magnificent was Smith-Marsette's landing after flipping into the end zone on the touchdown; he landed awkwardly on his ankle and limped off the field to the locker room. He returned to the game later wearing a protective boot. The good news is that he didn't seem to think the injury was serious:

Wisconsin answered Iowa's touchdown with a 16-play, 56-yard drive that ate up over half of the fourth quarter... and resulted in no points. Iowa stoned them on 4th-and-11 from the Iowa 19 and took over the ball their own 19-yard line. Alas, the offense did nothing (three-and-out) and brought the punting team back out. At which point Tory Taylor did something I have never seen before: he kicked the ball off the ground. Unfortunately, that's not legal in American football and Iowa got nailed with the rarely-seen "illegal kicking" penalty. Which is a really debilitating penalty: Iowa lost possessionandWisconsin gained half the distance to the goal line.

That meant Wisconsin got to start a drive at the Iowa 5-yard line with a chance to cut the lead to seven with seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Time to start holding our butts? Nope. Not with this defense. Wisconsin ran four plays from the Iowa 5 and got three yards and zero points, the drive dying with a Mertz interception to Jack Campbell. One play later Tyler Goodson did this --

-- and it was chips and salsa time in Iowa City and Iowafinallyhad another win over the Badgers.

Iowa's defense has been an absolute rock all season and they were again today. They benefited from playing a Wisconsin team that was bereft of many of its usual skill position starters, but they still put the clamps on the Badgers for pretty much this entire game. They held Wisconsin to 66 yards of offense in the first half and just 225 yards in the game. Wisconsin's best scoring opportunity came from catastrophic special teams blunders that gifted them incredible scoring position (the Iowa 25 and the Iowa 5; they still only managed seven points out of those starting positions). The two other decent drives they put together ran out of steam against an Iowa defense that effectively denied big plays and tightened up near the red zone. Particularly notable: Iowa held Wisconsin to 56 yards on 33 carries, a meager 1.7 yards per attempt. After years of getting plowed over by Wisconsin's running game, Iowa stopped it in its tracks today.

There were heroes aplenty on the defensive side of things, but Chauncey Golston was particularly excellent. He had a team-high nine tackles, including that critical sack in the third quarter to halt Wisconsin's budding momentum. He was a menace all game long, as he's been for much of this season. Iowa also got strong performances from Nick Niemann (second on the team with eight tackles and Johnny-on-the-spot with the fumble recovery to set up Iowa's first field goal) and Jack Campbell, who was both a heat-seeking missile delivering punishing hits and fierce in coverage, as he proved by grabbing the game-icing interception in the fourth quarter.

Special teams has been a big positive for Iowa this season, between the threat of Smith-Marsette on kickoff returns, Tory Taylor's consistently excellent punts, Keith Duncan's reliable placekicking (at least inside 50 yards), and Charlie Jones' effective punt returns. But the special teams were a very, very big negative for Iowa today, with the exception of Duncan. The blunders by Jones and Taylor gave Wisconsin their best (and really only) opportunities to score points all game. Fortunately, the defense bailed them out and limited the damage inflicted by those blunders, but still: those were some terrible, terriblemistakes. The good news, at least, is that they're not indicative of the way those players have played the rest of this season in the least -- and they're not even indicative of the way they played in the rest of thisgame. Taylor's other punts weren't as excellent as they were earlier in the season, but they were still effective. Jones didn't lose his punt return job after that costly muff and had a decent run-back on his next return (though it was negated by a holding penalty). Here's hoping the mistakes we saw today were just flukes.

It was another slightly odd game for Spencer Petras. His final stat line -- 14/25, 211 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT -- certainly isn't bad. He threw some of his nicest passes of the season today, particularly on the touchdowns to Smith-Marsette. And yet... there were plenty of moments that made your heart leap into your throat, too. First half Petras was jittery and off-target for the most part. He nearly threw interceptions on back-to-back passes; one was called back because of a pass interference penalty and the other slipped through the Wisconsin safety's hands. The talent we saw in the Good Spencer throws -- the arm strength and the accuracy -- makes it clear why the coaches have stood behind him all season long; the goal is still to figure out how to getthatPetras to show up for more than a few passes each game.

In his final game at Kinnick Stadium, one of the most exciting players of the Kirk Ferentz Era put on an impressive show. Ihmir Smith-Marsette finished the game with seven receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns, either tying or setting career records in each of those categories, as well as two of the finest highlights in a career that's had no shortage of brilliant plays. Smith-Marsette has had blinding speed since he arrived at Iowa, but his play this season has showcased his growth as a receiver, particularly in his route-running and his willingness and ability to make tough catches in traffic. In a different offense, with a different quarterback, his numbers would look far more impressive than they were this season (25 receptions, 345 yards, 4 TD). But he's still an outstanding receiver, the best Iowa has had since Marvin McNutt, and it's been an absolute joy to watch him produce countless big plays for Iowa over the last four seasons.

Parenthood: The Important Profession on Planet – Brighter Kashmir

Posted: at 8:14 am

If you can't change the thought of family, you can't change the society. The most responsible and important profession in contemporary world is parenthood, but we pay seldom ear to it.

Upbringing , training and enriching is main responsibility of parents, and futuristic society entirely depends on human capital i.e. children, youths. In our society, parents never taught their children, how to treat and do by with situations. In our homes, girls before marriage are never instructed, How to be mother. Similarly boys are never educated ,How to be amenable and liable father. So, most accountable responsibility of parents is only upbringing and enriching the child. If we will talk according to science there are three stages right from birth in which you have to take care of your child.

Ist Stage (Nursing Stage)

this stage starts from birth to 7 years. Also called stage of exploration. You have to take care of your child like nurse to patient. Care of food, clothing, surrounding factors etc. Please don't pressurize your child till 7 years to be disciplinary in religious and sciences.Allah has poured greatness with superlative degree in every human being .These are parents and locals who are stopping him/her . Our society pressurize their children to stop him/her from achieving greatness. So , after feeling pressure he/she stops giving opinions and takes the replica of our prosaic people.2nd, when the child starts crawling, let him/her crawl. Don't force him/her to walk . The more the child will crawl ,the capacity of brain will automatically increase. So you no right to suppress him/her natural capacity. Let him/her grow. Then from 2 years- 2 years , child starts speaking. By this it is assure everybody holds greatness from Allah the Almighty, because you can't learn one , two or more languages now ,than in this stage(2-2). Now the capacity in child starts building. You can't suppress him/her to be disciplinary, otherwise you will act as suppressant. Let him/her ask questions, opinions etc.As a mother , be very close to your child .Don't scat him/her to schools and classes for your pseudo_ comfort. At this stage he/she needs oxytocin, that isn't available in school or at anywhere, but in home. If you will scat him/her as mother, you are not less than criminal then.

2nd Stage

This stage starts from 7 years to 12 years. Also called stage of facilitation. In this stage, there is demand list of children. Don't try to cover up and hush up your child. You have to facilitate him/her. In this stage if you will give 50 subjects to child , He/She will rock all 50 subjects with nice grades. But we are doing against it .we are giving only few, with this capacity starts decreasing.Try to offer him/her organic exposure,(not TV screen). If you are not using his/her capacity ,it is like that you are using only 2, 3 buttons of machine. At the age of 12 frontal compartment of brain is formed called frontal cortex. Conciousness ,heed, observance signal comes from this. So here, you have to train him/her according to good religious ethics etc.Justification of sin, the moral voice comes from this cortex , it is incumbent to use it well.

3rd Stage

This stage starts from 12 years to end . Also called age of reflection. The directions and trainings you gave to your child , He /She will reflect that . If he/she was critical thinker till 15,16 years ,accordingly he/she will act till life and vice versa. The great human minds existed in the world till, would have been triggered by parents, teachers or friends. Also in this stage, the brain starts argument with everyone. So it is the colossal responsibility of parents to channelize in a direction where the product is like Iqbal, Gandhior others. Therefore , It is lucid your next society is your child . Care him/her as a good responsible and accountable parent. In above stages pour the Islamic thought in their minds. This is how greatness is created.

Rockall (band) – Wikipedia

Posted: December 6, 2020 at 10:35 am

Rockall

Rockall is a band named after the island off the west coast of Scotland, who nevertheless operate chiefly around the south of England, rather the northern homes of many members. The band plays largely instrumental dance music, mostly traditional tunes and original compositions with west-coast Scottish style melodies, with a variety of unlikely and increasingly reckless influences including classical baroque, reggae and 1980s rock: Vivaldi's Mandolin Concerto (1st movement), Mark Knopfler and Jean-Jacques Goldman have been covered in live performances. Rockall was founded in 2006 by piper Robert Maclean with several short-term instrumentalists, and Ruairidh Howells as sound engineer. Ruairidh Howells returned to the band some years later to play drums, mandolin and saxophone, alongside Pete Scott (fiddle, bass), Sen Mac Labhra (piano, bouzouki), Marjolein Poortvliet (fiddle), Mike Coughlan (uillean pipes) and Jack Harris (guitar). Jack Harris maintains a parallel solo career, performing songs rather than Rockall's preferred instrumentals.

Rockall's first album is due for release in the second half of 2018. It has been provisionally titled "Northwesterly, Good", a reference to the UK Shipping Forecast in which the island features.

Who owns Rockall? A history of disputes over a tiny …

Posted: at 10:35 am

Who owns Rockall? The isolated Atlantic outcrop is in the news after the Scottish government warned Ireland it will send its fisheries patrol vessels to force Irish fishing boats to leave a 12-mile (19km) zone around the tiny disputed island. But Rockall made headlines long before Friday.

On September 2nd, 1861, the coveted patch 418km (260 miles) west of the Co Donegal coast gained attention on page four of The Irish Times after a letter writer predicted its bountiful waters would yield money surpassing in value the gold discoveries of California or Australia.

I now forward an account of the second return here of Captains Rhodes and Gardener from the new fishing ground at Rockall, wrote J Dawson, MD.

They have again made a most successful fishing, having caught between thirteen and fourteen tons of codfish each in about six days fishing; while the account they give of the vast numbers of great fish that swarm around that insulated rock in the ocean is even more wonderful than before.

Rockall has long a generated fierce nationalist rivalries since the first British royal navy expedition scrambled ashore in 1810.

Possession of Rockall, 386km (240 miles) west of the Scottish mainland, was for many decades deemed imperative in order to generate claims to the vast tracts of surrounding fisheries and the oil-rich Atlantic seabed.

The British navy annexed the rock in 1955 by hoisting the Union flag and cementing a brass plaque on its storm-washed summit. The 1972 Island of Rockall Act, passed by parliament in Westminster, formally declared it to be part of Inverness-shire, even though the nearest permanently inhabited settlement is 367km (228 miles) away on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides.

Irish Governments have not recognised these claims.

British imperial ambitions were set back by international ratification of the UN convention on the law of the sea (Unclos) in 1982, which states that: Rocks which cannot sustain human habitation or economic life of their own shall have no exclusive economic zone or continental shelf.

That decision meant ownership of Rockall, which is the eroded rump of an extinct volcano, would no longer be decisive in the international, diplomatic battle for control of the seabed below.

The rules of Uunclos stipulate that coastal states can register claims to the seabed up to 350 nautical miles (648km) offshore. Claims are ratified by the UN commission on the limits of the continental shelf which sits in New York.

The UK made its formal submission for the Hatton/Rockall area in 2009, using the deserted island of St Kilda, inhabited until 1930, as its baseline.

Rockall is 167 nautical miles (309km) to the west of St Kilda.

The UK, however, is not the only state eager laying claim to the the Hatton/Rockall basin. Ireland, Iceland and Denmark (on behalf of the Faroes) have also lodged overlapping claims.

Consequently, there have been quadripartite talks shuffling between London, Dublin, Reykjavik and Copenhagen for years in an attempt to agree common underwater borders that would allow exploration to start.

Despite the tortuous negotiations, Rockall retains a symbolic attraction for adventurers. Tom McClean, an SAS veteran, endured 40 days roped to the outcrop in 1985 in order to assert the UKs claim.

In 1997, Greenpeace protesters lasted for 42 days as part of a protest against oil exploration. Underwater reserves of oil, gas and minerals are increasingly eyed by rival nations eager to boost their reserves.

In the most recent chapter in the history of Rockall, Scottish external affairs minister Fiona Hyslop warned the Irish Government that it will deploy its vessels to protect Scottish fishing rights around Rockall.

The Irish Government contests the Scottish claim to the land, as well as the claim to exclusive fishing rights.

In a statement on Friday, the Irish Government said that its position has been and remains that the waters around Rockall form part of Union waters under the Common Fisheries Policy, to which the principle of equal access for the vessels of all EU Member States applies. Irish vessels have operated unhindered in the Rockall zone for many decades fishing haddock, squid and other species.

Tnaiste Simon Coveney said it was the longstanding position of the Government is that Irish vessels are entitled to access the waters around Rockall.

He said: We have never recognised UK sovereignty over Rockall and accordingly we have not recognised a territorial sea around it either. We have tried to work positively with the Scottish authorities and to deal with sensitive issues that flow from it in a spirit of kinship and collaboration. We very much regret that matters have reached this point and intend to do everything possible to achieve a satisfactory resolution.

Irish people may associate the tiny island with Sen Loftus who changed his name to Sen Dublin Bay Rockall Loftus the late TD, former lord mayor of Dublin and life-long environmentalist.

The island also has the distinction of having inspired a rousing republican anthem, Rock on Rockall, by the Wolfe Tones.

The chorus goes: Oh rock on Rockall, youll never fall to Britains greedy hands/Or youll meet the same resistance that you did in many lands/May the seagulls rise and pluck your eyes and the water crush your shell/And the natural gas will burn your ass and blow you all to hell. The Rockall score was designed to estimate the risk of rebleeding or death in patients with upper GI bleed. A score of 0 (pre endoscopic) identifies extremely low risk of rebleed or death and may be suitable for early discharge or non admission. Patients with a full (post endoscopic) Rockall score of < 3 have a low risk of re bleeding or death and can be considered for early discharge.

Boston College vs. Virginia Odds & Picks: Should the Eagles Really Be Favorites in Charlottesville? – The Action Network

Jeff Hafleys first season in charge of Boston College has been a legitimate success. The Eagles are 7-4 on the season with all four losses coming against ranked opposition.

The Virginia Cavaliers (4-4) have been the definition of average in Bronco Mendenhalls fifth season. The Cavs are in a look-ahead spot with a game against in-state rival Virginia Tech next Saturday, but the Hoos will need to take the Eagles seriously if they want to finish the season above .500.

The days of Boston Colleges ground-and-pound attack are long gone. The Eagles brought four of their five starters back on the offensive line but have run the ball for only 3.3 yards per attempt this season.

Instead, BC is now finding success through the air with Notre Dame transfer Phil Jurkovec. Jurkovec has thrown for 7.6 yards per attempt and has developed a nice connection with wide receiver Zay Flowers and tight end Hunter Long, as the two have combined for 97 catches, 1,288 yards, and 11 touchdowns this season. Jurkovec was banged up in BCs last game, but he is probable for Saturday.

Virginia has struggled to defend the pass this season, so I expect Jurkovec will be able to throw the ball all over the yard in Charlottesville.

Jeff Hafley was brought over to improve the Eagles defense, but so far that has not been the case. Boston College is allowing 5.7 yards per play and ranks 106th in Defensive Success Rate, per College Football Data.

Boston Colleges defense has particularly struggled against the run, allowing 4.6 yards per attempt and ranking 110th in Defensive Rushing Success. Virginias ground game grades out as average, so Boston College will need to improve if they are going to hold the Cavaliers in check.

The Eagles struggles arent limited to stopping the run. They have also been poor against the pass. The Eagles allow 7.5 yards per pass attempt and rank in the bottom half in Passing Success Rate and explosiveness allowed.

The good news is they will be facing one of the worst passing offenses in the ACC.

If you throw out his last game versus FCS opponent Abilene Christian, Brennan Armstrong is only throwing the ball for 6.9 yards per pass attempt. The problem is Armstrongs top two targets from last year are gone, though hes found a nice connection with Billy Kemp, who already has 52 catches on the season.

The ground game is the strength of Virginias offense. Mendenhall is running a similar style of offense to the one he used at BYU when Taysom Hill was the quarterback, so its not surprising that Armstrong is the teams top rusher. Wayne Taulapapa has been a solid No. 1 running back, as hes averaging 4.5 yards per attempt.

Boston Colleges weakness on defense is against the run, so I expect Mendenhall to pound the rock all afternoon long.

The Cavaliers have done a solid job of stopping the run this season. Virginia is allowing only allowing 3.9 yards per carry and ranks 19th in Defensive Rushing Success, per College Football Data. That will come in handy against Boston Colleges run struggles.

However, Virginias secondary is allowing a whopping 9.7 yards per pass attempt on the season and 11.7 YPA over its last three ACC contests. Its no surprise that Virginias defense struggles to contain big plays, as it ranks 109th in passing explosiveness allowed.

To make matters worse, both of its starting safeties are questionable for Saturday, so Virginia is going to have a tough time keeping Jurkovec in check on Saturday.

I think Boston Colleges passing attack has a huge advantage in this game, especially since Jurkovec is probable. The Eagles defense will need to step up and stop Armstrong and the rushing attack, but it should be up to the task against Virginias average rushing attack.

I have Boston College projected at -2.86 favorites on the road, so I think theres value on the Eagles at +4.

Pick:Boston College +4 (down to +2).

Scientists Are Sharing The Miscommunications That Bug Them The Most – IFLScience

Posted: at 10:35 am

Scientists on Twitter have been sharing some of the science miscommunications that bug them the most, including things that scientists oversimplify or under-simplify or are just poorly explained in their field.

Science communicator Susanna L Harris kicked things off with her meme-shattering fact that you've been lied to about mitochondria.

-

Planetary astronomer and communicator James O'Donaghue jumped in with an animation to destroy your favorite planet fact.

-

This one puts birds in their place.

-

This one ruins the poetry a little bit, but would it really kill poets to get their facts straight once in a while?

-

We feel like this one might be a bugbear of just about everybody, not just scientists.

-

This chart explains evolution much more than the chart used atschools, and it's frankly baffling that this isn't the standard yet.

-

This one is particularly fun and counterintuitive.

-

The Sun has a massive gravitational pull, containing 98.8 percent of our Solar System's mass. Despite its massive influence over all the bodies in the Solar System, it's surprisingly difficult to actually head right at it. This is because of our own planet's movement. We're traveling at around 30 kilometers (19 miles) per second, or108,000kilometers (67,000 miles) per hour around the Sun.

In order to get to the Sun, you need to cancel out thesideways momentum, which will cost you a lot of energy. This isn't just a theoretical idea, NASA's Parker Solar Probe was designed to do just this (though toskim the Sun's atmosphere rather than roast itself). In order to do so, it had to lose 85,000kilometers per hour(53,000 miles per hour) of motionthrough the use of powerful rockets and seven gravity assists from Venus.

Though it lost sideways momentum, by its seventh and final approach to the Sun, the star's gravity will help it become the fastest human-made object ever built, at around692,000 kilometers per hour (430,000 miles per hour).

-

Preach.

-

Prepare to have your mind blown about bees.

-

Twice.

-

Another cute "fact" is destroyed.

-

We're fairly sure it's widely known that not all the dinosaurs lived together, but it's weird to see that T. Rex lived closer to ourselves than to the Stegosaurus.

-

While we're on the topic, are you aware that a lot of the dinosaurs lived on the other side of the galaxy?

-

This one will likely ruin a misconception you've had since childhood if the comments are anything to go by.

-

-

And finally, a fun one.

-

The rest can be viewed on Twitter and are well worth your time.

The rest is here:
